Sun ZFS Virtual Box Appliance - Performance question
Hope this is the right place to ask this question - apologies if it is not.
We are testing out the Sun ZFS storage using the handy Virtual Box Virtual Appliance.
Now I know this is a VM appliance and as such, we're not going to see anything like real life performance on this thing - but I was wondering if there were any tips someone might share with regards to getting the best performance possible?
We are using the VB appliance to test a lab based OVM setup - and up to now, performance is too dire to even install a simple VM Guest or upload an ISO to a repository.
The host specification is 24GB RAM and 8 cores - all of which we have presented to the ZFS appliance - however doesn't seem to make any difference .
Is performance of the VB appliance throttled?
We have got OK performance out of the HP P4000 VSA (again not great - but OK for lab testing).
Cheers,
Jeff
Jeff,
You are correct - the simulator is for testing a subset of functionality only. I am unaware if the VM will use more than one processor, but the RAM will help. One item I can also comment on based on experience is that iSCSI offers the best performance for demos. I use iSCSI as opposed to cifs / nfs / ftp etc. Looking at DTrace, I get much better performance - but I am running a system with only 2 disks, so even that might top out on your server. Perhaps a remote demo with the Oracle Solution Center?

Is there a Virtual Box Appliance available with OWB 11gR2?
Does anyone know if such a thing is available (like the Developer Days appliance, but set up for DW)? Thanks.
I had lots of trouble too, but finally got it to work. It's crazy that someone at OTN can't fix this.
See my July 7 2010 post in this thread.

Virtual Box Appliance request! Linux + XE + Apex 4.0
Hello,
Can anyone provide me a Virtual Box image with a complete installation of Oracle XE + Apex 4.0 on Linux OS?
I am trying to set up a testing environment, but I can't get APEX 4.0 to work on an ORACLE XE database installed on Centos 5.5. (all in a Virtual Box image)...
Please...
Regards,
GeorgeI posted my problem on the APEX forum here: Apex 4.0 install on Oracle XE (on Linux) issue!
Actually, I am trying to complete my installation (Centos 5.5 + XE + Apex 4.0) for some weeks now. I ran into different, undocumented problems (I'll share them with you some time) and the last one is just the last drop in an ocean of compatibility problems. I'm sorry I chose Linux as an OS, I'm 5 minutes away from buying a Windows 2003 server license.
Even if I can succesfuly complete my installation, I'm thinking that a repository with the preinstalled VMbox images for learning+testing purposes would make my life a lot easier! I'm trying to migrate my APEX applications to 4.0, but until now I just wasted a lot of time on installing it!
Regards, George

Uninstalling Sun Virtual Box and Windows 7 from Macbook Pro?
Hi everyone!
Can anyone tell me how to properly UN-install Sun's Virtual Box and Windows 7 Beta from my Macbook Pro so I can reinstall Windows 7 Beta thru Boot Camp?
I recently installed Sun's Virtual Box and Windows 7 Beta on my Macbook Pro. It works fine, but there are some things about Virtual Box I am not happy with. I'm told that uninstalling both Windows 7 and Virtual Box and reinstalling Windows 7 through Boot Camp will be better for what I want and Windows 7 will run much better that way.goducks14 wrote:
Thank you - I really appreciate your response. I did delete the .dmg so I guess I will have to re-download it from Sun and then uninstall it as you suggested.
Maybe you can answer another quick question? I am hearing both YES and NO in regards to being able to install the Windows 7 Beta using Boot Camp. Any problems that you might be aware of?
If you visit our BootCamp forum you will find many users running Win7http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1244
While Win7 is not supported, for many users, that's not important.
When I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit on this MBP, it was not supported and I installed it under Tiger and a beta of BootCamp! It still works. Experimenting is fun and a great learning experience.
Just be sure you have a viable backup - SuperDuper!, CCC or TM before installing BootCamp and Win7 and you always have a path for a recovery should anything go wrong.

(solved?) Virtual Box, kernel26-bfs, 1000hz?
I switched to the bfs patched kernel, but I get an error when the kernel tries to load the virtualbox module. I assume this is because the default kernel is using a hz rate higher than 1000. I read 1000 is needed, or else you can break some things like virtual box. My question is how can I set the rate to 1000? I searched the grub page and looked around the bfs documentation and it seems everyone agrees to set the kernel hs to 1000 but how to do it doesn't seem to be discussed.
Sorry for the newbie question!
edit:
I may have solved it. I think I needed to recompile the kernel module and hopefully it will work on my next reboot automatically. I won't know until I reboot, and I can't until tomorrow. I may be back!
Last edited by Google (2010-09-28 12:05:07)Regarding HZ, you set it in the kernel config when building the package (see the PKGBUILD). Another option is to use ck's patches which change the default from 250 to 1000.
And ... umm ... what is your rate anyways? The default is definitely not more than 1000.
I'm afraid I can't help you with VirtualBox as I know nothing about that. -
Parallels Question/Virtual Box
Hello-
Not to sure where to place this question in the forums, but I was wondering if anyone has used Parallels as well as virtual box so they could say which one is better. I have a PC program I want to run on my Macbook Pro, witch is Proshow Producer a honken slideshow program for PC and far superior to Imovie.
I found out that virtual box is free, but wasn't sure if it will be up for the task. In fact, I don't know if Parallels will be up for the task either.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,It depends mostly on how much RAM you have and what you will run in those virtual machines. And also how much you can tolerate strain/lag. 4GB of RAM is the minimum you should have, I think. I have a 2008 Mac Pro with 6GB of RAM, and it can run simultaneously VMWare Fusion (which is slower than Parallels) with Windows 7 and VirtualBox with Debian or Windows XP without noticeable strain.
I don't know about Parallels 9, but Mavericks would most likely make it slower. -
Sun Virtual Box & Toshiba Satellite L10 - product recovery settings problem
Hi-
I had a problem a while back with my Satellite L10 and was unable to get full recovery settings after installing Sun Virtual Box and ignoring Microsoft warnings.
I suspect this has now cloned my disk. Something is very very wrong. I am using Win 7 beta in the interim but would like my XP back.
My notes to Sun Microsystems are here:
Has anyone had the same experience or what does Toshiba recommend?
Thanks,
TimHi -
Thanks very much for the advice.
It's really strange as the system runs through Win 98 options on booting the product recovery dvd but then gets you to a full & perfect toshiba L10 XP.
I reinstalled XP and went through the process you mentioned above (F8 etc) after installing - at least my safe boot mode options etc. are there.
My guess is that either the disk itself picked up on the cloning or something outside the HDD has been cloned or produced an 'image' of the previous HDD.
If I want to get a new product recovery dvd (as a next step in my investigation) can I download from the net or do I have to order from Toshiba (is this a good course of action?...).
My system can only burn cd's, but I could get someone else to burn a dvd for me if this is possible.
Thanks....

[SOLVED] Virtual Box Install Question
I have been working through the Arch Linux wiki regarding installing virtualbox.
I do not believe I have a custon kernel, as I would not know how to customize it, but here is my kernel info:
Name : linux
Version : 3.8.4-1
Description : The linux kernel and modules
Architecture : x86_64
URL : http://www.kernel.org/
Licenses : GPL2
Groups : base
Provides : kernel26=3.8.4
Depends On : coreutils linux-firmware kmod mkinitcpio>=0.7
Optional Deps : crda: to set the correct wireless channels of your
country
Required By : nvidia virtualbox-host-modules
Optional For : None
Conflicts With : kernel26
Replaces : kernel26
Installed Size : 64728.00 KiB
Packager : Tobias Powalowski <[email protected]>
Build Date : Wed 20 Mar 2013 05:16:17 PM EDT
Install Date : Tue 02 Apr 2013 09:36:32 AM EDT
Install Reason : Explicitly installed
Install Script : Yes
Validated By : Unknown
Following the wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox) I installed virtualbox and virtualbox-host-modules.
When I go to launch virtual box I get:
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (3.8.4-1-ARCH) or it failed toload. Please reinstall
the kernel module virtualbox-host-modules or if you don't use our stock kernel
compile the modules withsudo dkms autoinstallYou will not be able to start VMs
until this problem is fixed.
After googling I have read that many people get this warning after a kernel update but in
my cause this is a fresh install.
I even followed the steps for a custom kernel and reveived the follow:
input:
dkms install vboxhost/$(pacman -Q virtualbox|awk {'print $2'}|sed 's/\-.\+//') -k $(uname -rm|sed 's/\ /\//')
response:
Error! echo
Your kernel headers for kernel 3.8.4-1-ARCH cannot be found at
/usr/lib/modules/3.8.4-1-ARCH/build or /usr/lib/modules/3.8.4-1-ARCH/source.
Pretty much at a loss and any help would be appreciated.
Last edited by soulrainX (2013-04-13 18:03:58)So now my kernel is up to date:
Name : linux
Version : 3.8.6-1
Description : The linux kernel and modules

URL : http://www.kernel.org/
Licenses : GPL2
Groups : base
Provides : kernel26=3.8.6

Install Date : Sat 13 Apr 2013 10:36:09 AM EDT
Install Reason : Explicitly installed
Install Script : Yes
Validated By : Signature
and now I can run
modprobe vboxdrv
and it seems to work, yet when I run VirtualBox, I still get:
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (3.8.4-1-ARCH) or it failed to
load. Please reinstall the kernel module virtualbox-host-modules or
if you don't use our stock kernel compile the modules with

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed
Just tried removing virtualbox via
pacman -Rns virtualbox
and reinstalling and it stills reads kernet as 3.8.4-1

Folks, greetings.
We have a customer that needs to install a patch on his ACS-SE, but since this is a very big and productive environment, he is very concerned in doing so without testing on a lab in advance.
As we don't have an appliance to run the tests, I was wondering if we could install an ACS-SE image onto a virtual machine (VMWare, Sun Virtual Box or MS Virtual PC).
Does anybody out there has any experience in trying this kind of lab?
Thanks in advance,
ALBTW, the patch was not designed to run on ACS For Windows. That's why this is not a solution.

ISight Camera on Windows Xp as a virtual machine in Virtual Box
I'm using Virtual Box to run Windows Xp in my MacBook Pro. I have been trying to have a video conference through Messenger but iSight is not being recognized. I've gone through the process of installing the Guest Additions and there I've selected iSight. But when windows try to install the new detected hardware, does not find any driver for iSight. Has anyone been lucky to make iSight Camera work properly under this environment? I've gone to Virtual Box forum and I haven't found any positive answer.
Message was edited by: RudyGomezYou’re absolutely right. I installed the Skype program in Mac OS X directly and not in any virtual machine. I forgot to say this. I’m using Virtual Box of Sun Microsystems as the virtualization software and not Parallels neither VMware Fusion neither BootCamp. I went to Virtual Box forums and there is not solution for the moment to make it work the iSight Camera because there is not a driver. Anyway I tried to get the driver from the installation disk that you told me but the Windows virtual machine does not catch the DVD by any means, I tried in different ways and not one worked. Besides I read that the drivers that comes with the installation DVD only works for Boot Camp. I’m not at all an expert on this.
In spite that now I can have a videoconference with my Windows’ friends and relatives, I’m still waiting for the proper solution to the iSight driver in Virtual Box.
Thanks a lot for your suggestion.
