SunCluster 3.0 specific questions

Any questions about Sun Cluster 3.0 solution:

Q1: D1000 array has 2 independent differential UltraSCSI channels, but how
many interface boards ? (if the 2 channels are handled by a single adapter,
the D1000 is not a real HA architecture)
Q2: Is the new D2 array supported in a Sun Cluster 3.0 environment ?
Q3: If I build a 2-node cluster with a D1000 array (the 2 channels
daisy-chained together in a single SCSI bus), can the D1000 be easely
substituted with a D2 in the future (changing of course the SCSI board on
the nodes) ?

Q2: Is Netra 20 h/w compatible with SCI (or PCI-SCI) interconnect in a Sun

Any questions about Sun Cluster 3.0 solution:
Storage:
Q1: D1000 array has 2 independent differential
UltraSCSI channels, but how
many interface boards ? (if the 2 channels are handled
by a single adapter,
the D1000 is not a real HA architecture)In most Sun Cluster implementations which are
optimized for availability, there will be two nodes
connected to one or more D1000s via HBAs.
The choice of splitting the D1000 into two halves
versus using two or more D1000s is up to the
implementor. It is very, very rare and generally
not recommended to have only one shared SCSI
bus.
Q2: Is the new D2 array supported in a Sun Cluster 3.0
environment ?Not yet. Qualifications are updated every two weeks
so you will want to keep in touch with your Sun
representative to verify the qualification status.
Q3: If I build a 2-node cluster with a D1000 array
(the 2 channels
daisy-chained together in a single SCSI bus), can the
D1000 be easely
substituted with a D2 in the future (changing of
course the SCSI board on
the nodes) ?This is a supported configuration assuming there are
two D1000s which are not split into halves and the
data is mirrored between the separate D1000s.
Changing to a D2 in the future will involve upgrading
to the LVD SCSI HBAs and any other associated
migration work (eg. relocating a quorum device
and migrating data)
Network:
Q1: In Sun Cluster 3.0, a NAFO group enables
resilience from network adapter
failure. Does it increase the network bandwidth too
(spreading the traffic
across all the interfaces of the group, like
multipathing does) ?No.
Cluster aware applications:
Q1: Does anyboby of u confirm that RSMAPIs are
available only w/ a SCI
interconnect ?This is correct as of this time.
Q2: Is Netra 20 h/w compatible with SCI (or PCI-SCI)
interconnect in a Sun
Cluster 3.0 environment ?Again, you will need to verify the qualifications with
your Sun representative.
Q3: Using RSMAPIs "An application on node A can export
a segment of memory,
which makes it available to applications on node B";
is this segment of
memory available to node B applications after a node A
failure (at power off
too) ?Yes. The memory is replicated between the two
interfaces. There should always be a copy of the current
remote host memory physically located in the local host.

  • Specific question on seek

Ok here is a specific question unlike my previous one.
If i store records with a fixed record length something like :
    RandomAccessFile file = new RandomAccessFile("example.txt","rw");
long pos = inputLong("Type the record number for saving the data:");I am using the "pos" to give my record a location. Thus searching for a record i would use something like
file.seek(50*pos);My question is, here to locate a record i must know its pos number before hand, is it possible to locate a record with letters instead of a number?

I believe by pos he means "index" or "recordnumber" (i.e. each "record" is 50 bytes long, fixed-width and pos is really which of these records/items he wishes to retrieve).
As far as locating them with letters, that depends. If you simply wish to find a record that contains specific letters, then you will have to read each record and then check if it contains those letters. If, on the other hand, each record has a "key" (i.e. the first two letters of each record must be unique) then you can read through the entire file when you initially access it and create a hashmap containing these keys and there "position" or "index". Then, when the user says give me AZ, you simply retrieve the "index" from the hashmap and read the corresponding record.
Edit: That example I gave you in your ":( Help" thread does exactly this second option.

  • Very specific question about iOS 7 and podcasts

I have a very specific question regarding the playback of podasts under iOS 7.
Right now, I've still got iOS 5.1.1 (iPhone 4S).
What I would like to have is a way to play an episode from a podcast that I have not yet finished, and when I double-click the ear-bud's middle button, then I would like to jump (skip) to the episode in the list, even if that episode is from a different podcast.
Right now, under iOS 5.1.1, I achieved that by creating a smart playlist in iTunes that collects all the episodes from all podcasts with a play count == 0.
This smart playlist is mirrored to the iPhone.
    It works very well.
It seems to me that something like that is not possible under iOS 6, so I skipped that.
My question now is whether I can acheive this under iOS 7.
I would be most grateful if some kind soul could shed some light on that for me.
    Best,
    Gabriel.

    Hi Larry,
Thanks very much for posting a reply.
I do absolutely intend to print a test copy first - but thanks to your advice at least know the spine is going to be ok!
I didn't realize that method would give me a nice landscape image of the unbound cover - I'd mistakenly remembered that it gave only one page at a time for front and back.
    Thanks for helping out.
    Best,
    Marco

  • Specific Questions Multiple Routers *HELP*

I have a few specific questions regarding multiple routers in one home.
    1. Would it be possible to have (2) verizon supplied routers such as Actiontecs working in one home over Coax? to be more specific i would like one router in one room of the house connected to coax and providing hardwired/wireless. and another of the same type in a different room doing the same.
an installer told me something to the effect that there would be wireless interference between the two. my next question is if I am able to have two routers connected over coax. could I log in to one and Set Wireless to OFF? thus eliminating wireless interference? if not what would be the issue? could i use a non-verizon supplied router (which i understand there is no support for) ? could i use a Wired router?
there is no wireless coverage issue here. simply personal preference. i need the ability to hardwire systems without running cable around the house ie:cat5 from router to another room.no wireless bridges or other configurations.
these routers are excellent in features and performance and having a second would be nice.
my last resort option would be to connect the router to my GE smartconnection center that i have in my home. coax to router router to cat5e thus braodcast throughout the house depending where i choose. this is my last resort since it is a steel enclosure and would hinder wireless performance.

Check out this website. It has all the different network configurations, along with the pro's and con's of each set up.
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/verizonfios/3.0_Networking
You can also set up the wireless to adhoc mode, which will allow you to connect the second router to the first wirelessly and extend your network without running cable to the other end of the house.

  • PSC 500 won't print yellow (a few specific questions)

I have tried installing a brand new cartridge, cleaning the connections, etc.  The most common suggestion I've found is that I have two bad or "old" cartridges (manufactured in Puerto Rico, April 2007).  Before I go buy another costly cartridge, I have a few questions:
    1) I colored an entire sheet of paper yellow in Word, then printed it.  The printer just spat it out without even pretending to print anything on it.  Does this in itself suggest either a printer or cartridge problem?
    2) I recently installed a new black cartridge (a remanufactured or refilled one from simplyink.com--yes, I know that's not recommended), and I'm sure I haven't tried to print anything in color since then (until today).  Could an issue with the black cartridge possibly affect the color cartridge?
    3) Regrettably, I can't say for CERTAIN that I've printed in color with the current cartridge; I can't remember when I installed it, but I'm ALMOST sure that I have.  This is another reason that I suspect something internal happened and it's not just the cartridge.  I hope I'm wrong, or that there's a fix that doesn't involve taking the old beast into a repair shop.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Okay, trying to figure out why no one will even look at this...I read the first sticky, so in case this helps in the etiquette department: I have searched, and haven't found answers to these specific questions.  My operating system is Vista, and my printer is connected via serial port.  I think I have done everything that's suggested.  Please, can anyone give me a hand here?

  • Can you link specific questions to list variables where it pops up choices depending on the question?

If i am asking a specific question for example:
Alpha Sector, then if Alpha Sector was selected then you must list what POSITION on ALPHA work is being performed.
    Alpha = Alpha Position 1
                Alpha Position 2
                Alpha Position 3
                Alpha Position 4
Alpha Position 5 , then depending on which of these are selected, it also has another question as well. What will be the FREQUENCY on that SPECIFIC POSITION.
Say that Alpha was SELECTED, then work is being performed on ALPHA Position 1, then another popup here should allow another question to be answered: What is the FREQUENCY for ALPHA Position 1 ? then once this was asked if Alpha Position 2 was also SELECTED, then go through the same above ROUTINE.
Alpha = Alpha Position 2 was also selected, then another popup here should allow another question to be answered: What is the FREQUENCY for ALPHA Position 2 ? and SO ON.
How is this accomplished? Would i have to create new pages then link to them or what?
Please help, feel free to call or email me direct.
    Thank you,

Thanks for your suggestions, Magnus, you really have had a good think for me - I appreciate that!
What I am doing is report writing in which 90% of the report is the same for everyone. Except the cover page with Name and Address details, and Report title; the initial section which is the same for everyone except for specifics such as amount to invest, reason for investment, term to invest over, things like that.
The end of the report is the recommendations section which is where I use freetext to create a bespoke solution - this cannot be automated.
Just automating the cover page and the intro section save me huge amounts of time which I can then use on research and fund analysis, leaving the principles of investment section pretty much the same for everyone, as here I'm describing the principle and theory.
After I created this Report Template my average report creation time went down from about 3 to 4 hours, to about 45 minutes. I guess the automation itself doesn't save as much time as the templating does, but it allows me to concentrate on the important bit and not worry if I have left something out - or in - that changes the overall thrust of the report.
I cannot load Lotus WorpPro on Parallels, nor on Virtual PC, so the lack of automation really is a pain here. I see it as a weakness of Apple products for business, as I am sure Microsoft do which is why they have dropped VBA support for Office 2008.
I have got NeoOffice as well as OpenOffice for Mac on my system, but really they aren't atable enough to use, and the formatting is pretty flaky. It certainly isn't completely consistent with Office itself.
So, I am left with the conclusion that progress only means a reduction in features!
    But maybe I'm missing something?

  • Specific questions about a RAM upgrade to 4GB on my MBP

I have a MBP model MA895LL/A. Currently populated with the original memory (2GB)
Recent clean install of Snow Leopard, with all current updates.
    Specific questions:
What memory does Apple use in their laptops? Does it really matter if you get the same manufacturer for complete compatibility?
Do timings matter? Will faster timing improve performance slightly, or is it a waste of money to go for the faster stuff on my specific model (Intel Core 2 Duo T7500)
Best to populate with 2 sticks X 2?
Finally, how about manufacturers? Anyone have any positive experiences with specific manufacturers, or, horror stories they can share?
I guess I just want to buy the best memory for my MBP. I build my own PCs, but I'm not sure if the Mac is a little more picky, RAM wise. Cost isn't really a factor. I'm willing to spend a little more, and buy the right stuff, and only do it once, without the hassle of sending it back, etc.
Any advice would be great. I know its possible this question has been answered many times before. I guess I don't know where to look...

Uh, yes, this is asked just about every day, like here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2154109&tstart=0
Using the "Search Category" box in the upper right works.
To answer your questions, since you likely have the 2 slots filled with 1GB DIMMs, you need to get a pair of 2GB to max the RAM. I guess you could use 1 OEM stick and one 2GB stick for 3GB total, but I would just go for 4GB. If you are under warranty, save the original RAM, as Apple seems to dislike seeing any 3rd party RAM no matter what. Put the OEM RAM back in if you need warranty work.
I've seen several brands OEM, a lot of Hynix and Samsung, but it is probably all well tested to Apple spec. Otherwise, brands mean nothing, but see the above linked thread. I prefer to go with the exact spec'd RAM myself. I believe "faster" RAM does not run any faster. Vendors mentioned in the linked thread all have selector aids to find the exact RAM for your model.

  • TIFF Format Specification Question

This isn't a Java-specific quesiton, but I was hoping someone here would be able to help as I have tried numerous other avenues already.
Im working with (TIFF) images that have multiple layers, and each layer can have different min/max values. I want to store these min/max values for each layer in the .tiff file, in the SMinSampleValue and SMaxSampleValue tags. So if I have 3 layers I need to write 3 mins and 3 maxes down.
    The documentation for SMinSampleValue/SMaxSampleValue says:
Note that a value should be given for each data sample. That is, if the image has 3 SamplesPerPixel, 3 values must be specified.
However when I use libtiff (haven't tried this in Java yet but it would be similar I guess):
    TIFFSetField( newTIFF, TIFFTAG_SMINSAMPLEVALUE, min1, min2, min3 );
    OR
    ===
    TIFFSetField( newTIFF, TIFFTAG_SMINSAMPLEVALUE, min1);
What gets written is min1 three times, so if min1 is 40, then 40 40 40 is written, due to a variable "count", I dont understand where the count for the tags gets set, I shall look into that further.
But my main question is how do I write multiple different values for SMinSampleValue and SMaxSampleValue using tifflib? How do other TIFF readers/writers do this (format question), since I want to be compatible with them.
    Thanks,
    HappyDeveloper

    Hi,
I am seeing the similar post in SDN and some replies state the following. Have a look into this
Often this error occurs because the TIFF file you have has been saved with some form of compression. You need to open in a picture edit program and save as TIFF making sure options are set so there is no compression.

  • Specific Question Reporting in LMS

Hi I've been using Captivate for a few months, and I've recently gotten a module together and am hosting it on SCORM cloud.  My module contains some quiz slides, however I'm finding the reporting I'm getting back a bit odd, I'm
sure it's user error but I'm unclear what I'm doing wrong…I'm getting the info about who is taken the quiz and how long they've taken etc, but what I need to know is the specific answers they have given, i.e. have they answered A B C or D.
I've been making the quiz slides myself with click boxes and actions, and including them in quiz reporting, but I'm unclear how I can then get each question and answer I've created to show up in the SCORM reporting…for example, most of the specific reporting looks like this:
    2015-02-27T15:34:20.387
[USER} correctly answered 'Question 6888' with response '1'
I'd like to be able to specify the question number myself (not sure where the 6888 is coming from) and make it so the response was "A" or any of the other selections.  Is this possible?
Hopefully this is clear enough, I'm pretty new to the game.  Thanks for any help in advance!!

I should add to the above that I'm making my own quiz slides.  Still looking for an answer to this problem, so far what I've been doing as a workaround is putting the result of the question in the Interaction ID...ie "Question1DINCORRECT"  or "QUESTION 2ACORRECT", that way I can at least see what they answered.  When I was looking at the SCORM data I saw this:
    "result": {
      "success": true,
      "response": "1"
This is where the LMS is getting the data, but I have no idea how to change it so the reporting could say User X incorrectly answered Question 1 with response D...hopefully this makes sense.  Any help greatly appreciated!!

  • Specific questions before installing Bootcamp

My plan is the install Bootcamp first, and then VM Fusion,
so that I can do both a reboot into Windows and have
a virtual machine, depending on my needs.
    Questions:
    1. Do I only need the partition size for Windows XP to be
large enough for the operating system and not for any
    Windows specific programs or files?
    2. Bootcamp instructions state that with NTFS file system,
that files created on Mac cannot be saved in Windows
partition. Does that also mean that files created by
Windows and saved in the NTFS partition cannot be
opened by Mac? Is that an argument to make the Windows
partition FAT32 and only use it for the operating system?
    3. I have a 1 GB hard drive. I plan to run as much as possible
within Mac, but will be forced to run certain items in Windows
(Panasonic KV-S2026 scanner only has Windows drivers,
QuickBooks 2008, etc). I won't be running games. How would
you divide your hard drive and why?
    Thanks.

The biggest problem is often that people don't estimate how much disk space they will need for Windows. Double what you think you need.
If you don't think Windows will need storage to save programs and files, where do you think they will go?
Yes files and programs are stored on Windows.
Fusion will also add support files and drivers to Windows. Maybe you don't need to even use BootCamp and just get by with Fusion. Or Parallels.
NTFS is read-only from OS X unless you use 3rd party drivers, then you can write to NTFS.
MacFUSE 3G is one, Paragon-Software sells a program. It is no different than installing any scanner or printer driver, so it isn't a big deal. Installing Fusion, and Windows, those take more care and knowledge.
Vista requires NTFS. With XP you can still use FAT.
#3: you don't have a 1GB hard drive. 500GB? 1TB? Same with memory, everything is in "GB" now, and not "MB."
In your previous "solved" thread about XP Pro 64-bit, you went over most of this already. If you want to use 4GB fully, then Vista 64-bit. However, Apple still doesn't include the 64-bit drivers for the iMac, for those you need to grab them off the web.

  • Basic application deployment specific questions

I have some questions related to application deployment. Following this tutorial, I am able to create an executable 'jar' file and deploy it to another computer. So the basics work for me, however ...
    1.
In order to make the application running on different computer, I manually need to copy ~8 specific files (firebird database dll's) in directories like:
    c:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin
    c:\Windows\system32
If i do so, everything works fine. I did not test this yet, but I believe, IzPack software will be able to help me with this. The problem is, how do I set the destination path for those files on destination computer? This path can vary on different computers, so this path can't be hardcoded. Besides, is it normal to place application specific files into those directories?
    2.
My application uses relative references to files, e.g.:
    static String DATABASE_FILE_NAME = "software.fdb";
static Database _firebirdDB = new Database(DATABASE_FILE_NAME);If i execute application like this:
c:\myApplication\java -jar "NameOfJar.jar", I get a bunch of exceptions, because my database file 'software.fdb' can't be located.
If I however execute application like this:
    c:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe -jar "NameOfJar.jar", then everything works all-right.
Obviously, my application depends on current working directory, when it's executed. How can I avoid this?
    Thanks for help in advance,
    Juraj

This may be silly question, but where can I find more information about 'installing complex applications with native libraries'? I even don't know, what to search google for ..
For instance, i have JAVA installed on my PC, but I don't have env. variable %JAVA_HOME% set. So I can't rely on this .. Really, the problem is that Java is designed to be platform-independent, but you're trying to use dlls which are native to each platform. To get the platform independence, Java generally doesn't know about any native libraries. If you have an application which depends on them, it's your responsibility to [get them to a place where Java can find them|http://www.inonit.com/cygwin/jni/helloWorld/load.html].
When you have a standard installer for an application, it's making sure the libraries are in the right place. If they aren't, it has to find a way to put them there. Sometimes the app will just keep a copy in its own directory, so that it doesn't have to install it into an OS directory. The setup.exe program is specially designed to handle this kind of thing on Windows.
Java, on the other hand, doesn't know you're on Windows. It could care less. All it knows is that it has Java code, and it's running in a JVM. If you explicitly tell it to load a system library, it does it and you can access it with JNI. But it still couldn't care less that you're on Windows.
Like I said, I've worked with packages that are mostly Java but have some native code. Usually, what it comes down to is the installation instructions saying, "Put this DLL in the Java path." Sometimes they have a nice little installer that does it for you, or can try to use JAVA_HOME and asks you where to put it if it can't find it. But you are absolutely right -- you can't rely on it because Java doesn't care you're on Windows. You should have JAVA_HOME from the Java installer, but it really doesn't care. It's your responsibility to package it in such a way that it works.
    3.
It is a bit strange, anyway. Normally, when I see application packages, I see something like 'setup.exe' bundled with dozens of 'dll's' .. Is it correct to put everything under 'jar'?Setup.exe is a Windows executable to install Windows programs. Java doesn't care that you're on Windows, so it offers JAR, an executable package format. There are some tools to make it easier for delivery on a particular platform, but I've never used them.

  • Blackberry specific question

    Hi,
I posted below query to blackberry guys, but unfortunately i didn't get any response.
I want to send alerts to Blackberry devices using MDS service, and display
the data without any user interaction. Once it is displayed user can
    interact with the display object.
As per the info available in the site and feed back from blackberry guys , i have
    to write two components
    1. Background listening thread that runs on start-up that will await for
    incoming data
2.GUI component that the user can run and interact with and this will also
interact with the background listening thread to display new data that
    arrives.
I need some clarifications on the above components.
Assumed the i developed both the components and deployed in device.
    1. When a new data arrives, does the GUI component can be displayed
(invoked) automatically? or the Gui component has to be in run mode (user
    already invoked the component) ?
    2. Can i make the gui component as MIDP1.0 component? ie can i use midlet,
    for the alerts display?
    3. Why i want to use MIDP is for portability. In future, if the blackberry
connect architecture come into play, at least my gui (Midlet) component can
    be portable to other devices.
    4. The basic question is can my background thread, invoke another
application (MIDP) with out any user interaction?
ie the thread receives data from MDS and invokes MIDP application and gives
the data (or stores in RMS) to that application to display the data with out
any user interaction. Once it is displayed user can close the application.
I really appreciate your freed back.
    Thanks & Regards
    phani

Here are the ans for my quires.
    1.     When a new data arrives, does the GUI component can be displayed
(invoked) automatically? or the Gui component has to be in run mode (user
    already invoked the component) ?
You can register a app as system module and will up when the device starts.
    2. Can i make the gui component as MIDP1.0 component? ie can i use midlet,
    for the alerts display?
You can not use both MIDP and Blackberry specific apis. Ie you can use MIDP/CLDC apis or Blackberry/CLDC apis
    3. Why i want to use MIDP is for portability. In future, if the blackberry
connect architecture come into play, at least my gui (Midlet) component can
    be portable to other devices.
IF the device supports Blackberry apis then the app is portable.
    4. The basic question is can my background thread, invoke another
application (MIDP) with out any user interaction?
Feedback from RIM guys is Technically possible. But didnt tried it out.

  • General and specific questions on the applicability of Sun Studio 11

Hi. In an e-mail letter from Sun Microsystems I read about Sun Studio 11 to "utilize its record-setting parallelizing compilers." From this message I was attracted by the possibility of adding something like parallel processing, not by changing the processor (hardware), but by adding Sun-Studio-11 software to a Linux operating system. Now I already have a Fortran compiler, the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux, which is free and can handle Cray-style pointers, a feature hard to find in a free Fortran compiler.
1a. So for the most basic of questions, without having parallel-processing hardware, just an ordinary processor [a 1-GigaHertz (GHz) Advanced MicroDevices Duron central processing unit, in my case], is it possible to have parallel processing and thereby increase one's computing speed by installing Sun Studio 11 in a Linux operating system?
1b. If so, by what factor could one expect the speed of computation to increase over not having Sun Studio 11 installed? (If the gain in speed is dependent on the type of computations being performed, I imagine possibly using a Fortran code to perform numerical calculations using and perhaps searching for minima or maxima in a two-or-more-dimensional surface. So please give me an idea of the sort of gain in speed one could expect for these two types of activites, calculations using formulas and searches for minima and maxima among already-computed quantities.)
1c. Again if so, how could one just by adding software have parallel processing without two or more hardware processors? In other words, what is the basic working principle of the software to make the simultaneous performance of multiple tasks (multitasking or parallel processing) possible?
2a. Does Sun Studio 11 include a Fortan compiler?
2b. If so, must one use it to have parallel processing with Sun Studio 11?
2c. Or will the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux work with Sun Studio 11 to have a parallel processing capability?
Concerning hardware requirements I read that Sun Studio 11 requires a minimum of 512 MegaBytes (MB) of memory, presumably Random Access Memory (RAM). My Hewlett-Packard, ZE1110, Pavilion, notebook computer has 256 MB of RAM, but is expandable to a maximum of 512 MB of RAM. So in this respect it is in principle at least technically possible for me to meet the minimum system requirement for Sun Studio 11 with my computer, if I choose to increase its RAM. Somehow accommodating the cost of such a RAM addition, including whether one may have to buy two, matching, 256-MB RAM modules or just presumably one additional 256-RAM module, is another requirement. But before spending money for such an upgrade, one should first thoroughly investigate other matters to determine if other things are going to work and to determine what gain, if any, one could expect in computing speed with Sun Studio 11 and an additional 256 MB of RAM; then decide, based on such data, whether the purchase is personally worth the money or not. That's one motivation behind this posting; another motivation is for me to learn some things.
Lastly I would like to here thank whoever was thoughtful enough to provide the Sun Download Manager (SDM) 2.0, which allows the pausing and resumption of the 207-MB download studio11-lin-x86.tar.bz2 for the Linux version of the Sun Studio 11! Using a slow, dialup, Internet connection like mine having a maximum speed of 28.8 kilobits/second, this makes it possible to download that file over a number of Internet sessions instead of having to have an uninterrupted, 19-or-more-hour Internet session. Besides the invconvenience of tying up one's telephone line for that long a time, it might be even be difficult to have such an uninterrupted Internet session for that long a time. I have at least started such a download using the SDM 2.0 potentially over multiple Internet sessions. Whether or not I carry it out to completion could depend on whether everything looks good with Sun Studio 11 for my particular situation. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for both of your postings here. I'm mostly trying to learn something here.
From Maxim Kartashev: "For example, if one thread (or process, or lwp) frequently performs an I/O operation, then the other thread (process, lwp) can utilize processor resources to perform, say, some computations while first one waits for operation to complete."
I think I might understand what you meant above. I guess lwp in the above context stands for light-weight process. And I think you may be talking about a potential gain in speed with just one, ordinary processor. I guess you meant that one program, or perhaps group of programs, could perform input/output processes at the same time it is performing calculations because different parts of the processor are being used in these two groups of processes. Then on "while first one waits for operation to complete" I guess you meant that if the input/output operations finish before the computations finish, then thread 1 that was performing the input/output operations will have to wait until the current computations ordered by thread 2 are complete before thread 1 can utilize the computational resources for its own computations; i.e., two threads can't use the same computational resources of an ordinary processor at the same time. How is my thinking so far, Maxim, right, partly right, or all wrong?
Now if the above thinking of mine is right, then it appears that one could have some gain in speed doing things like you suggest with just one, ordinary processor. And if so, I imagine that the gain could be a maximum of a factor of two for a program that requires spending as much time in input and output as it does in computation; i.e., keeping both the computational and input/output resources working all of the time without the input/output resources waiting on the computational resources or vice versa. How is my thinking here?
If the above thinking is correct, just for purposes of discussion with just one, ordinary processor, not a dual processor, and a program which does nothing but computations there would be no gain in speed using Sun Studio 11 and a Fortran compiler over not using Sun Studio 11. In other words, to increase the speed of computation one would have to buy a faster computer, buy parallel processing hardware for an existing computer and use parallel-processing software, or somehow figure out how to harness two or more computers to work for you at the same time with instructions from one piece or perhaps set of pieces of code set up for parallel processing using two or more different computers. The latter case would be a computer analogue or "two 'heads' are better than one," not human heads, but computers. How is my thinking here?
Here I am still assuming that it is possible for one processor to be used to do two different kinds things at once. However, I don't see how one Fortran program could instruct two things to be done at once. This is because I have not seriously studied parallel processing, I suppose. That is I am used to a sequential set of instructions that proceed from top to botton down the lines of code; i.e., one instruction or line of code can't be executed until the line of code before it has been completely executed. That is the computing "world" with which I am familiar. So how about someone here teaching me with an example of parallel-processing Fortran code how parallel processing works, explaining what instruction or group of instructions tells the computer to execute input and computational instructions at the same time?
Based on the encouraging information from one or more other people I have been able to use the Intel Fortran for Linux 8.1.024, if I remember correctly, in a computer with a 1-GigaHertz (GHz), Advanced MicroDevices (A.M.D.), Duron Processor. So this is at least one case where it is not essential to have an Intel processor to use the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux 8.1.024.
Is the Sun Fortran compiler free for personal use? And can it handle Cray-style pointers?

  • Specific questions/issues on importing iPhoto '09 into Aperture 3

Questions I have about migrating to Aperture 3 from iPhoto '09:
-will Places carry over as I've set them up, and customized on many images, with my own names etc? YES - They say Places come over, but don't know all the details
-will my Albums carry over as I've set them up, including Smart Albums, MobileMe galleries, Flickr galleries, etc? YES....I think - Albums, Smart Albums, and Slide Shows come over - no mention of MobileMe, Flickr, etc - although you can publish to those, the albums you've set up? Dunno, will test.
-will all my metadata that I've added in Description fields etc carry over? UNANSWERED
-and here's a biggie - I've spent I don't want to know how many dozens or hundreds of hours on using the Adjustment panel on thousands of images - will those Adjustments carry over and look the same in Aperture 3? Or will I lose those changes or have them look different? This is probably the biggest dealbreaker if it doesn't work as I hope.
-when is it safe to migrate over? I certainly want to hold onto the existing setup in case anything goes wrong, and I'll need at least as much space to move it over. Should I wait for the inevitable 3.0.1? When's that due?
-how are altered images saved - and how much control do I have over it? I save modified images in iPhoto as JPEG on the theory that is fine for export but not archive if I want to change it later
-will my star ratings carry over?
-if I import my iPhoto library over, does it maintain the source unaltered RAW as well as the altered?
-are the source images still directly accessible via Finder etc - what if I want to pull an image sequence into After Effects, for instance? I don't want to have to export new files to do so.
-are styles from my camera's RAW presets respected? I've noticed that D300S RAW images are reported at an exagerated size (4304 instead of 4288 pixels wide, similarly overtall), and if I set the camera to black and white, iPhoto recognizes them as color images. I suspect this has something to do with D300S RAW support at an OS level, but will Aperture 3 do any better?
I'm posting an article over at ProVideoCoalition on this stuff, I'll update from what I learn here.
    -mike

You can answer all these queries yourself. Simply you will make a back up of your iPhoto Library before migrating over. No one would seriously consider doing a job like that without a back up, right? Then, if you're not happy with the outturn you can simply restore your back up.
-will Places carry over as I've set them up, and customized on many images, with my own names etc? YES - They say Places come over, but don't know all the details
What more details do you want?
-will my Albums carry over as I've set them up, including Smart Albums, MobileMe galleries, Flickr galleries, etc? YES....I think - Albums, Smart Albums, and Slide Shows come over - no mention of MobileMe, Flickr, etc - although you can publish to those, the albums you've set up? Dunno, will test.
Your Events come over as projects. Albums and Smart Albums and slideshows come over though you may find differences in the Slideshows as the mechanism is not quite a replica of the iPhoto one.
I have no Flickr albums or MobileMe ones either.
-will all my metadata that I've added in Description fields etc carry over? UNANSWERED
    Mine did.
-and here's a biggie - I've spent I don't want to know how many dozens or hundreds of hours on using the Adjustment panel on thousands of images - will those Adjustments carry over and look the same in Aperture 3? Your edited pics come over with their originals. They look the same

Yesterday or tomorrow or never. That's the answer to both parts of your question. There may never be a 3.0.1, no one outside of Apple knows.
-how are altered images saved - and how much control do I have over it? I save modified images in iPhoto as JPEG on the theory that is fine for export but not archive if I want to change it later
Aperture is very different from iPhoto. There is no edited version. Your decisions are stored in the Aperture database and applied live as you view the pics. They are only committed to images when you export or print the pic.
-will my star ratings carry over?
    Mine were.
-if I import my iPhoto library over, does it maintain the source unaltered RAW as well as the altered?
Haven't you asked this already? Yes.
-are the source images still directly accessible via Finder etc - what if I want to pull an image sequence into After Effects, for instance? I don't want to have to export new files to do so.
Depends on whether you run a Managed or a Referenced Library. If you want to use processed or edited images in another app you'll need to use Previews (for those apps that support that) or else export versions. This is exactly the same as previos versions of Aperture.
are styles from my camera's RAW presets respected? I've noticed that D300S RAW images are reported at an exagerated size (4304 instead of 4288 pixels wide, similarly overtall), and if I set the camera to black and white, iPhoto recognizes them as color images. This question is not clear, but you do know, of course, that even if you set your camera to black and white that it takes colour photos, right? And all it does is flag the pics with a tag: 'Display Me in Black and White'
This has nothing to do with Raw support. You'll get better B&W images in Aperture than on your Camera.
I'm posting an article over at ProVideoCoalition on this stuff, I'll update from what I learn here.
You're going to take the time to learn the differences - the very profound differences between iPhoto and Aperture - before you do this, right? Because, based on some of your queries here - especially the ones about modified images, make me wonder if you've grasped Aperture.
