SUP role on 2008 R2 DP with 2012 R2 upstream server housing CM 2012
Hey all,
I'm fighting a specific issue in the lab right now and wanted to throw this out to see if anyone can lead me in the correct direction.
Primary Site Server - Server 2012 R2 with CM 2012 R2 CU2 (WSUS 4 - 6.2.9200.16384)
Distribution Point - Server 2008 R2
Remote SQL 2012 database housing existing SUSDB from Primary Site Server
I'm wanting to install the SUP role on the 2008 DP and began to install the WSUS server role. While trying to install WSUS on the 2008 server and connect it to the SQL database, I received an error:
"The existing database is not compatible with this version of Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2. Select another database instance or create a new database."
After some research, found a few postings indicating this could be a permissions issue, so I ensured that both the account performing the installation and the DP computer account had sysadmin permissions on the SQL server. Additionally, I added them
to the dbo role within the SUSDB itself.
Attempted the installation again with the same results. More research uncovered an article indicating the SQL browser service needed to be turned on - so... I did that, another attempt - same result.
Reading some articles on using 3.0 as a downstream server for a 4.0 upstream server state that it should work fine, so long as the appropriate KBs are installed prior to the first sync.
My primary question is should I be installing WSUS 3.0 on the downstream server separately, installing the KBs, then attempting to connect to the upstream server before I let CM take over? Or is there something I'm missing that should enable me to
install the connection during the initial installation?
Thanks for your reply.
With regards for your answer 1. - I've read several posts on the WSUS forums that indicate a WSUS 4 (6) upstream server can indeed be used with a WSUS 3 SP2 downstream server, so long as KBs are installed prior to the first sync. See here (just one of many
articles on this topic):
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/35ed689a-8b78-424e-802d-9e335e07fcfe/wsus-6-upstream-server-will-support-wsus-3-sp2-downstream-server-or-not?forum=winserverwsus
As far as 2. - I'm very aware that CM takes over the configuration of WSUS with regards to the SUP role.
My question is what am I missing that is causing the error that is preventing me from installing WSUS on the 2008 R2 DP and connecting it to the upstream SUSDB? If the articles stating that this is possible are incorrect, then that's an easy answer,
but if it can be done, as everything seems to point, do I need to do the following:
1. Install WSUS 3.0 SP2 on the 2008 R2 DP without connecting to upstream server
2. Install appropriate KBs to ensure compatibility prior to the first catalog sync (reboot)
3. From within the WSUS 3.0 SP2 console, connect to the upstream WSUS 4 (6) SUSDB
4. Add the SUP role within CM and let CM handle the config from there.
I just don't want to mess things up if these steps are futile.

Move SUP role from Server 2008 R2 to new Site System running Server 2012 R2
Is it possible to move the primary SUP role which is currently running on a separate site system under Server 2008 R2 (WSUS 3.0 SP2) and move it to a new site system running Server 2012 R2 using the same SUSDB? I've moved the SUP role
around before by setting up a secondary SUP (using the same DB) then removing the primary SUP role which causes the secondary SUP to become the Primary but that was using the same version of OS and WSUS. With the version of WSUS being different
on Server 2012 R2, I was thinking this may not be possible since the documentation says the WSUS versions must be the same when creating multiple SUP roles.Hi,
>>I was thinking this may not be possible since the documentation says the WSUS versions must be the same when creating multiple SUP roles.
As the document indicated, "When you have multiple software update points at a site, ensure that they are all running the same version of WSUS." So the scenario you decribed should be not supported.

I am unsure exactly what to do to get this server working as it was.
Example, The Windows Server 2008 R2 has Microsoft Exchange, DNS, DHCP, ADDS, FileServices,Network Policy and access Services and Webservices roles installed on a single box.
Since the Server OS Rebuild I am getting 2 issues that pop up usually when Outlook in opened on a client Workstation,
I have not dont anything certificate wise to the server since OS Install, and the messages I get and best described here
I seen on a backdrive, a few certificate files I dont know if we can use these files for anything but we have the following files of drive E (Backup)

Replace 2008 R2 domain controller with 2012 R2 domain controller
Good afternoon. We currently have 3 older Dell floor unit servers running Windows Server 2008 R2. All of them have the exact same server roles (AD, File Server, DHCP and DNS). This year we bought 3 brand new Dell rack mount servers we would
like to use to replace these older ones. The new servers are running Windows Server 2012 R2. I want the new servers to have the exact same name and IP address as the old servers when its all said and done. I'm looking for an article or some
pointers on how to approach this. Here is what I was thinking:
-Copy files for File Server role from 2008 server to 2012 server using something like robocopy (or any other utility someone may suggest)
-Demote current 2008 AD server and reboot
-Rename demoted 2008 AD server and change the IP address and then reboot
-Rename the new 2012 AD server and change the IP to match the old server and reboot
-Promote new 2012 AD server as new DC
Does anyone see anything wrong with this or have any input on what I should do? Any help is appreciated. ThanksThat approach should be good.

SCCM 2012 SP1 - SUP role removal or reinstall issue resolution
Hello all,
I just want to share a fix regarding SUP removal (re-install) issue.
I think I found a bug regarding SUP role removal/re-install.
When I try to re-install secondary SUP on a site system, when I remove SUP via AdminUI – Administration – Site - Site Systems, it gets removed from the list but I get the following errors, which makes (re-)installation fail.

In fact, the registry is under

When I trigger uninstall via AdminUI, it failed to remove, thus it think that it is already there when I try to re-install it.

YPaeYes!!! this worked for me. I have SCCM set up with a number of untrusted forests with a firewall in between my SCCM servers and the untrusted forests. The firewall went down and half of my site servers in the untrusted forests were giving
the "operating system reported error 997: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress" on a number of their components. Finally found this, deleted the reg keys under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Components\SMS_EXECUTIVE\Threads"
and that allows SCCM to reinstall. -
What happens when a VM with 2012 Integrations Services migrates to a 2008 R2 Hyper-V server?
I've been going through our Hyper-V environment to make sure our VMs have the latest, greatest Integration Services installed. I found one 2012 running a 2012 version of Integration Services on this 2008 R2 Hyper-V server. What kind of issues can this
cause? Should I uninstall the current version and 'downgrade' them to 2008 R2?
Orange County District AttorneyHi,
No, you should not. If the operating system is supported on a hyper-v version you can use it. This means if Windows Server 2012 is supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 hosts you can use Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2008 R2 with the Windows Server
2012 integration services installed as a guest OS.
You can find supported guest OS lists here

I want to migrate Analysis Services 2008 database to 2012 AS database along with data level security defined in current production cube
Note: Only Production environment have security, while no security is defined in development environment
Potential Approach:
1 - Using Synchronization Wizard: Gives me error : "The OLAP element at line1 can not appear under envelope......" and this is because Synchrinzation works only for same version
and in my case, there are different versions of SQL (SQL 2008 and 2012)
2 - Using Visual studio conversion wizard - Convert SQL 2008 AS project to 2012 and then process cube, so I can get the cube working but then how can I get data level security since 100's of data level security is defined in production Cube, so how can I
migrate that across
3 - Script out XMLA and deploy cube - But then again having issues with how can i script SSAS security
4 - Would taking backup of SSAS 2008 database and restore to SSAS 2012 will help ?
Any suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks,
MihirHi Mihir,
According to your description, you want to migrate the SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) 2008 database which have some security setting with it to SSAS 2012, right? We can migrate existing Analysis Services databases either during Setup, by upgrading an
existing instance of Analysis Services, or after Setup, by running the Migration Wizard. Generally, when migrating a database to another server, all the setting will be migrated. So in your scenario, you can refer to the steps on the links below to migrate
your SSAS database.

2008 R2 PDC with DNS, File and Print Server Roles
Hi all,
we have a brand new Canon iRA7260 setup on 2008 R2 print server, which is also our DC, DNS, DHCP and File Server with latest PCL5c drivers downloaded from Canon's website as recommended at that time by the canon technician who assembled the
machine. All our laptops and desktops are running Windows 7 64-bit and after creating a GPO everyone got connected to the printer no problem, the printer has a static IP, same subnet as the print server and PDC, printer's port has been setup to RAW
and to spool documents, driver isolation setup to default.
All users are setup for secure print, so every print job they send to the printer stays on the printer until they walk up to the machine and release it by punching in a department's pin. Everything works great except for every morning a get a few complaints
that the jobs sent to the printer did not appear in the secure print folder. There is no errors of any kind on workstations and all I see in the print job logs on the print server is that document been spooled, printed and deleted. The strange thing is that
the size of the document that disappears is always shown as 0 bytes in size and 1 page long. And the whole process of spooling printing and deleting happens within 1 second according to logs. There is no errors or warnings in the log except for informational
events.
I just discovered that what actually fixes this issue for me is not even restarting the print spooler on the print server, but just login into the print server from my workstation via RDP with admin credentials. Once I login into the server remotely,
every print job sent to the printer afterwards from every workstation in our office appears as usual in users secure print mailboxes. Users don't even have to reboot their work stations, everything just starts working as usual. There is no overnight activities
on that server as all our staff leaves the offices by 8 p.m. the latest and the only thing that is running overnight is the Symantec's Backup Executive backup jobs. Is it possible that a back up job could somehow affect the print server/print driver settings
or put it into a "sleep" mode so it would require a domain admin login to the server to bring it back into operational state?Hi, the print server had default permissions set after the role was installed. I just added domain users and authenticated users with print and view server rights. I don't think this is a problem though because Samsungs Brothers and Xerox printers
are working. It looks like some process that runs at night on the print server disallows users to print to the Canon printer when they come in in the morning. Login remotely with admin credentials into the 2008 R2 that has print server role installed and this
canon printer deployed via GPO fixes this immediately for all users. After the printer works fine until the last staff leaves the office. However when I come in in the morning everyone reports to me the same problem which again I'm able to fix by login with
my domain admin credentials. Could this be due to some special permissions that canon drivers require to be added that I'm not aware of? Or could this be caused by the overnight Backup Executive 2010 R3 backup job that kicks in at 9 p.m. every night?
Thanks -
Hi All,
Is it possible to create a two node cluster with SQL server 2012 STD on node1 and SQL Server 2008 ENT on node2 on a Windows server 2012?
aaI think you are confused with the way cluster is installed. Installing SQL on cluster is a two step process. On first node you create a new SQL cluster and on second node you need "AddNode" action.
Same edition media has to be used in above two operation.
you can install two separate instances with one enterprise and one standard.

How to Upgrade Service Manager 2012 SP1 with Windows 2008 R2 to SCSM 2012 R2 with Windows 2012 R2
Hi,
We are using Service Manager 2012 SP1 UR2 with Windows 2008 R2.
I am planning to upgrade Service Manager to R2 with Windows 2012 R2. I found the steps to upgrade SCSM 2012 Sp1 to R2 but need assistance to upgrade with 2012 R2 OS.
Please suggest how to achieve the above mentioned objective.
Regards, Syed Fahad AliVirtualization solves this problem handily, by allowing you to create a new server to run the new program on the same hardware. it also solves the related problem of moving off unsupported hardware without changing OS or application. VMware is my personal
favorite, but Hyper-V, Xen, and VirtualBox all have similar capabilities.
Compare the cost of work and confidence in success of a upgrade, where any of thousands or millions of uncontrolled settings could cause an issue, to the cost of work and confidence in success of installing a new OS instance and configuring a known state
for the new environment.
In short, upgrades should no longer be a thing. there are just too many ways they can go wrong, and it's far too easy to create a new OS with minimal expense and effort. -

SQL Server 2008 R2 & 2008 R2 SP1 installation fails in Windows server 2012
Hi All,
I have a strange issue here. I have a Windows server 2012 VM where i want to deploy SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise edition.
When i Run the setup every thing goes fine and during the installation wizard i get this error " The Folder path Program files contains invalid characteristics. I get this error 3 - 4 times during the installation wizard and the installation fails.
Below is the screenshot for the same.
So i checked few articles regarding the compatibility issue and found the below article and upgraded my setup to SQL 2008 R2 SP1 using the below article.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/petersad/archive/2011/07/13/how-to-slipstream-sql-server-2008-r2-and-a-sql-server-2008-r2-service-pack-1-sp1.aspx
Again i still see the same above errors and with that a new error related to a MOF File.
Below are the contents of the error logs. Can some one assist on this issue.

DHCP Failover in Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2 Environment
Hi Everyone,
We are trying to implement DHCP failover in our environment. Our IT Infrastructure consists of 4 – windows server 2008 R2 servers and 7 – Windows Server 2012 servers; 1 Main Office with 2 – DC’s and 9 branch/remote offices with one DNS server in every remote
office. All the DNS servers have 2 scopes defined on them for VOICE and Data with different Subnets.
What would be the best method to implement failover in 2008 R2 – Windows Failover Cluster or Split scope? And how to implement DHCP Failover in Windows Server 2012 R2?
Please let me know if you need more information.
Thank you for your help!
-kNHi,
if you can choose between 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 than go with 2012 R2 it is easy to create a DHCP failover there. Actually that is one of the new features of Windows 2012.
With Server 2012 you setup your fist DHCP server with the scopes you want to setup. Than you install the second 2012 server with DHCP role and authorized. If you have done this you going back to your first server, where you already configured your scopes.
Now right click onto the scope you want to setup for failover and select 'Configure Failover'. You can than set it up as kind of split scope (Load balance Mode) or as real fail over setup (Hot Standby). In Load balance Mode you can configure the balance of
IP addresses between the both servers, like primary has 60% IP addresses and secondary has 40%.
With Server 2008 R2 the easiest configuration is split scope. But here it depends how many IP leases you will max have and if you can absorb if one of the server is going down. Lets say you have 50 DHCP leases max, than sure, set it up as split scope. But
if you have 200 DHCP clients, than I would go with failover cluster. At the end it depends on your environment.

Migrating SQL 2008 DB to SQL 2012 for SharePoint Farm
Our SharePoint 2013 Farm runs on ISCSI Disk on Windows 20008 R2 Standard SP1 Platform with SQL 2008 R2 Standard SP2.
Now we are planning to move this ISCSI Disk to another SQL 2012 Standard Platform and then upgrade the SQL 2008 Databse to SQL 2012. Can some one please let me know what challenges we might face during this implementation.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512723(v=office.14).aspx
It depends if you want to move all, or just some, of your databases to the new server. If you need to move all of them that link describes the process but in short;
Backup and restore all databases to the new server
Configure the server roles and logins for the SharePoint accounts on SQL
Create (or modify) your SQL alias to point to the new server -
SUP role on Secondary Servers - Network Impact
Hello All,
we are planning to build the SCCM 2012 R2, we happens to have a depot for PC builds and this is remote site connected over WAN links. close to 50 to 100 machines are Imaged on daily basis, at present SCCM 2007 Secondary Server installed with PMP,
no SUP. client may never talk to local SUP server again once they go out of this facility.
I want to check is this good idea to install SUP role on SCCM 2012 SS with PXE role. does client download the SUP metadata again when clients scan against primary SUP server?
any other suggestions welcome. Thanks for your time
SreedharAnytime a client changes WSUS servers, there is a hit to ensure the catalogs are synched. This hit is generally fairly small though if the WSUS instances are in the same hierarchy. So, no the entire catalog does not get downloaded again, but it does need
to be synched.
Is it worth having a SUP at this remote site? That's really based on your expectations, how long its taking to download the catalog, and if your network team is screaming or not. For 50-100 clients, I would generally say no though.
