Super crashes?

Using the latest FCP X (ver. 10.0.9).  Just started using it.
My system - MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, with 8 GB Ram, 1067 MHz DDR3
I'm getting these very unusual crashes.  While working with FCP X the screen suddenly goes black, everything freezes, I have to do a button restart to get the computer up and running again.
Is there something I could look for?  Why this may be happening?
I do have FCP Studio on this computer, which I use all the time.  I'm only experimenting with FCP X right now, seeing if it can be used for my more professional jobs.  The crashes are not inspiring.
All ears,
Ben

Thank you guys.  It's happened three times to date.  I'll make notes next time it happens.  It would be odd if it was the computer.  I work a lot on this laptop ... FCP 7 (the whole Studio), Logic 9, Safari, Mail, Pages, scores of other apps, regularly.  And can't remember ever having had a crash ... until FCP X.
Maybe it's metaphysical: my own reluctance to commit to a whole new learning curve.  It's vibing the Mac.
Will come back to this post if the crashes continue.
Actually, Tom, I got this particular computer because my previous one seemed-to-die.  I took it to an Apple Service Centre; they did at least ten different tests, and then told me the drive was caput.  I asked them if they ever used Disk Warrior.  I got a blank look.  I took it home, pulled out the drive, dumped it into a toaster (external bay), ran Disk Warrior, and ten minutes later the drive was up and running just fine.  Meanwhile my little brother was having a similar problem with his slightly newer MBPro.  I offered to help.  In the day it took to get over to his place he bought a new machine, and then turned around and gave me his old 'broken' one.  Which I fixed in ten minutes ... and which I now own; it's this very sweet machine that's been working seamlessly for the last year.  Meanwhile my OLD one I gave to a friend, who has been using it for a year without a single problem.  Yay Disk Warrior.
Thanks for your suggestions guys ...
Ben
And I'll surely be back here if the problem continues.

  • Super-crash on mac mini, any ideas?

Ok, I used to build computers for 15 years and thought Ive seen it all......
10 hard starts or reboots..... entire screen would flash (NO this isnt the HDMI issue), with no icons, just the background pic.
20 more restarts, work ok for a bit half the time,....then finder would disappear, and COULD NOT be renewed.
10 restarts, and 4 seconds upon hard start, unit would shut down entirely .....
did a hard PRAM reset,......did nothing
Did a Command R .........  reformated drive......then it wouldnt take a a time machine backup (what the *$(#)
did another Command R..........reformated .........did a HIGHSPEED download of the OS............
tried that 4 times..............it would work and work and work for 2 days.......no install............
Oddly enough, i cant determine if its a logic board issue or a defunct HD. ............and i used to build and repair computers for nearly 20 years.

Hi, Could it be heat? Do you have any other RAM to test with?
If you hold d key or alt key at bootup, is AHT an option?
If the Mini came with 10.6 or lees, AHT would be on the Install Disc.

  • Horror Super Crash

Crikey - where do I start....
Ever since I installed iTunes 5 (I'm now on 6.0.1 - the latest) my system occasionally just powers down - absolute totally instantaneous power down. And the system will not boot back - I have to turn off the power switch for 30 secs and then power back up.
There is a sort of a pattern - it happens if I just select a movie file in a folder. It happens if I go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime. It happens if I select 'Test Direct 3D' in DXDiag. And it happens if I try to run any of the Steam Half-Life games. And it happens at other times that I have not recorded.
So it sort of seems Graphics / Quicktime / Direct X related - but I don't want to jump to conclusions.
iTunes still works though - after the first horror install, I downloaded the separate quicktime and reinstalled itunes separately.
I have the latest nVidia v81 drivers for my Geforce FX 5900.
I have the latest SoundBlaster Audigy Drivers.
I have the latest Asus and Ali drivers + BIOS for my Athlon 1900+ Asus Mbr (Ali Chipset).
I've turned off all motherboard monitoring in the BIOS and removed all services and start-up programs.
I have disabled the A/V on install of itunes.
I have updated the Windows Installer program.
It does seem better when I disable the nVidia and use the native drivers - but then I can't do anything anyway.
A total disaster and I can't work out what to do next.
    Any further clues or assistance?
    Kindest regards
    James

oh good gracious. are you getting any sort of blue screen whatsoever, James?
if not, try using the Jonathan technique here to see if there are any hidden blue screens:

if you get one after that, let us know what numerical and text codes you're getting.

  • Flash10a.ocx problem, causes IE to Close. HELP!

I have been getting this message frequently:
Internet Explorer has experienced a problem with an add-on
    and needs to close.
The following add-on was running when this problem occurred:
    Add-on Name: Flash10a.ocx
    Company Name: Adobe Systems Incorporated
    Description: Adobe Flash Player
The message pops up, and it then closes and restarts Internet
    Explorer.
What is causing this, and how can I fix it?
    Thanks so much!

Let's see now..."Internet Explorer has encountered a problem
with an add-on and needs to close..." for "Flash10a.ocx". This
    occurs on Windows 2000, Windows XP SP1, SP2, SP3, can't confirm
Vista, but others do here as well and on IE6, IE7 and IE8 and not
on Firefox and ver9 caused no such issues.
Ver10 included very important security updates...apparently
designed to crash your system(s) and cause your company money in
wasted IT time. No comment or fix at all in over 3-months now.
I plan to talk to IT at my company and see about reverting
all systems to 9.x and/or blocking all flash related content at the
hardware firewall level as we do Bittorrent and other crap. Let's
see how they react when their partners are informed that over
20,000 people can no longer see their advertisements and if we can
get it to cascade to other companies and if they fix it before
their customers lynch them for eliminating or pissing off their
    customers customers or target audience.
Never thought I'd see the day when Adobe is so lazy and
sloppy and insensitive that they make M$ look like a saint.
Unrelated I am also sick of their stupid Adobe Reader eating up
tons memory and crashing itself or the system...on a 4GB
workstation (3GB available). Do you guys have any programmers left
that know anything or did you outsource them are are partying on an
    island with AIG execs?
Fix it or prepare to feel it in your bottom line...I've had
it with you lazy software companies that for upgrades that cause
    more issues than they resolve!

UPDATE: Apparently Flash10b aka Flash Player 10.0.22.87 was
released on Feb24, 2009 to pretty quiet fanfare...if you look
closely you will find it VERY hard to see any mention of actual
FIXES besides critical security enhancement...until you dig deeper
and find the actual change log which lists
The following issues have been fixed in Flash Player
    10.0.22.87:
    • Flash Player 10 crashes in IE7 due to the use of a
dynamic TextField as a mask on another display object when the
field set to anti-alias for readability. (FP-1238/2256938)

    • Ming created file does not play in Flash Player 10 in

    • Seeking H264 video on the first few frames causes IE
    to crash. (FP-913/2216957)
    • Fullscreen in Flash Player 10 hangs with Flex 3
    horizontal slider. (FP-812/2216948)
    • Matrix3D AS3 class implementation is difficult to use
    for general math. (2216936)
    • The Origin header should be put on the banned headers
    list. (2202975)
    • Using drawingAPI2 in certain conditions when the
Shape is not yet on the displayList can crash. (FP-761/2202966)

    • Japanese characters are mojibake when they are
entered into an input text filed on the Mac Player. (FP-40/2269305)
Yes I'm sure 6 IE related Crash fixes are all "security"
related;) Geez...you guys must also think we are only in a minor
economic downturn too. The supidiest thing is that if you go here
    for support:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/
It IRONICALLY claims that, "SUPPORT ALERT Do you have
problems installing or running Adobe® Flash® Player for
Internet Explorer? Most of these problems can be attributed to
Windows Registry permission issues. See our technical documents on
Flash Player and Windows Registry permission errors."
    REALLY...REALLY?!?
Is that why sys admin and hackers (original
definition...computer whiz types) gave detailed issues on
IE6/IE7/IE8 conflicts everywhere including here many times and then
suddenly you sneak in 6-IE related fixes and add such a silly claim
to your support page. Look at the forum message here for some
reality check and PLEASE stop having MARKETING or THE LAWYERS write
all you documentation. Most of us just want stuff fixed and to know
when stuff has bee addressed or fixed....OK!

  • Super Monkey Ball Crashing

    Hello Everyone
Super Monkey Ball works fine on my 1st generation iPod Touch model MA623ZO running Firmware version 2.1 (5F137) but not on the iPhone that I just bought model MB496B firmware version 2.1 (5F136). Specifically it seems to crash after displaying the initial screen for a few seconds and dumps me back to the home screen.
SEGA have a knowledgebase article that recommends a complete reset of the iPhone (hold power and home button down until you see the Apple logo) but that didn't fix it. I've also tried deleting and reinstalling the application from the App Store.
I've tried submitting a ticket to SEGA support but the response I've had so far blames the iPhone firmware and says it will be fixed in a subsequent release by Apple.
    1. Does anyone know how to overcome this issue?
    2. Is the slight difference in firmware numbers between the Touch and iPhone significant i.e. 5F137 v 5F136?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Mine started crashing on my first gen phone and continues the same behavior on my 3G phone. The full screen splash is displayed then it goes back to the home screen.
I have completely restored the iPhone to no effect.
    Something is wrong.

  • Gnome 2.28 - Super -equals/minus causes delayed X-crash?

Sometimes when I press <Super>-equals or <Super>minus (pressing them 2 or 3 times in a row is guarunteed to cause this, but once will sometimes not cause this), my dark theme gets 'overwritten' with what looks like the default theme for Gnome. Apps still work as expected, but when I try to set the theme by going to System->Preferences->Appearance, it goes back to my original theme (without me selecting anything) then X crashes. This doesn't seem to generate any error logs in /var/logs/errors.log or /var/logs/XOrg.0.log. Is this happening to anyone else? This happens with metacity or compiz, identically, and is pretty reproducible with these 2 buttons.
Could someone with gnome 2.28 try this out please?

Interesting, my keyboard is (AFAIK) not instantiated by HAL or xorg.... will check that out, thanks.

  • Is there a printable DVD label that will not cause my Super Drive to crash?

CD Stomper and Avery paper labels cause the Super Drive to: reject the CD/DVD disk; report that the disk is damaged/unreadable; or just grind to a halt. Replaced the iMac internal Super Drive - still has same problem. Disks were prepared using the Super Drive and play without problems until I put a label on and try to play it in the same Super Drive. Labeled disks work fine in LG and Panasonic DVD players connected to TVs.

Many thanks. Used an external LG super multi drive burner to put labels on DVDs using Lightscribe, but the contrast and label limitations (black-gray) are less than ideal. Noticed that Avery sells CD/DVD label packages with paper labels for about 40 CDs and 2 "film" labels for DVDs. Web site doesn't appear to have packages of just DVD "film" labels. Has anyone had success with "film" labels for DVDs?

  • On Desktop Computer JVC everio footage isnt purple tint and theres no crash but its super slow

    ?

    Hi,
I work for JVC and would like to try and help.
I am very new to Premiere Elements.  Just got PE8 for my Windows 7 Desktop.
What I can tell you is that with PE8 the JVC .mod video will work fine.  I did some research and the last two versions of PE support the .mod files.
It did crash when I first installed it, but I noticed a little indicator at the bottom of the screen in PE8 which let me know about issues with my NVIDIA card.  I followed the the troubleshooting tips from Adobe, and haven't had any problems since.  It's pretty cool how the Adobe software was actually able to diagnose itself and point me in the right direction.  Maybe you are having a video card driver issue as well?
Based on my experience, it seems to me that the known issues with .mod files from JVC--and other camcorder brands who use .mod--are mainly with older versions of PE.
Also did a quick test importing a high definition AVCHD file from a JVC and it seems to work fine too.
I'm looking forward to trying PE8 more.  Looks like a great product.

  • Mail in Firefox loads fast & fine. When I go to Contacts, the system is super slow and sometimes crashes. What do I do?

Issue is simply, why does mail in Firefox work extremely well and then Contacts struggles and sometimes crashes. Thx.

Firefox doesn't do email, it's strictly a web browser.
If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". We might have an answer for you if we knew which web mail service provider this problem is with. Or, you could seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.
