Super drive cd-r issue

I am having an issue with my super drive when inserting a blank CD-R it will spool once then make another sound and a couple seconds later eject my cd. I burned a cd last week no issue. I went out today and purchased some other CD's thinking maybe it was a bad couple blank ones or somthing. Suggestions what may be causing my drive to not reconize the discs and spit them out?
I'm on an intel macbook pro with the latest version of lion.
thanks,
-james

1. Try cleaning the optical drive with a commercial commercial optical drive cleaning kit.
2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Super drive and cooling issues

Whenever I play a CD of DVD in my new super drive it comes out very hot even if it was only in the machines for a few minutes. Also, my cooling fans never seem to increase or decrease. I'm not even sure they are on. I can hear them work at maximum speed when I use the Hardware test on the Install disc but I get complete silence when I run the G5 normally. The back of my Mac becomes quite hot after awhile and I am afraid of melting something. Any suggestions?

Hello John and welcome to discussions,
Its pretty normal for this to occur. In fact it's just plain normal and to be expected.
Sounds like you have a 100% happy Mac there.
    Hope that helps you
    Regards

  • Super Drive - DVD Writing issues

    Hi,
Every time I try to write a DVD (this was working!) it fails with:-
    Hardware Error
    Sense Code
    0x09, 0x01
    Tracking Servo Failure
The DVD's I am using are HiSpace DVD+R 4.7Gb printed silver.
Any Ideas? I can write CDRs but need to write my photos to DVD as there are many Gb's worth!
    Cheers in advance,
    Carl.

mmh... the mini Superdrive is notorious for being below par in almost all respects, but just writing a DVD should be OK. Couple of things to try:
    1. Reduce burning speed
    2. Try with DVD-R media

  • Super-Drive region playability issues...

I work at an authorized campus reseller, and a professor stopped in and said he makes frequent trips between the US and Italy. However, he has switched the region of his DVD player so many times that it is now stuck in region-2 which is europe, of course. Is there any firmware or easy fix thing I can do or download.
your help is much needed and greatly appreciated!

    Bob,
the EASIEST solution for your prof would be to start using the VLC player instead of Apple's DVD Player.
You can download it for free at videolan.org. It is extremely clever and well made, very slick, has a good design, plays virtually EVERY possible format available - and it does not care at all what region your DVD comes from.
Just remember, after you installed VLC, to change the CD/DVD preferences in the System Prefs (under the Apple menu) to open VLC when you insert a DVD - otherwise the annoying Apple DVD Player would come up nagging...
Ah, I forgot, VLC is free.

  • Known issues with the Super Drive on an iMac 2.7 Ghz

Are there any known issues with the Super Drive on an iMac 2.7 that would result in speed issues and a grinding sound?

Vertically installed super slim DVD drives are not as reliable as a plain desktop burner. I've had one fail in two of three iMacs and have always had an external which I use most of the time. Other than that, the brand new iMacs do not have a Super Drive, so if that is what you are inquiring about, the point is moot. You need to buy an external anyway. As far as speed, I have never used a burner at high speed - unless you have a professional model, you can easily get burn errors when burning at a fast speed; sometimes consumer models do well burning with high speeds , other times not.

  • USB Super Drive issues

I have a new desk top, and a USB SuperDrive to install programs, however it keeps spitting out the disks, what do I do?

I to was thinking of getting the super drive until i just read all the bad reviews for it on here. You might want to go read them for yourself. Sounds like they are pretty much junk from what I read?  "Good Luck" !

  • Apple super drive configuration issues

My apple super drive is not working in windows. It says there configuration information is incomplete or damaged (code19). I have tried to update it but it says it is up to date. I really need this to work as i have a late 2012 imac. Here is what it says : Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19).
    Thanks

The Apple external optical drive ONLY works with Macs that do NOT come with an internal optical drive, any longer.
It can be made to work with older Macs through a system file hack, but there are better drives than Apple's own optical drive offering.
Not all optical drives are Mac compatible.
Most Mac compatible drives you will only find to be purchased online.
Here are two on Amazon.com that are cheap and Mac compatible
    http://www.amazon.com/LG-GP10NB20-Portable-External-Drive/dp/B004K2Z4MS/ref=sr_1 _3?ie=UTF8&qid=1398883289&sr=8-3&keywords=Mac+compatible+external+LG+optical+dr i ve

Here's another source for Mac compatible optical drives. These are better quality optical drives.
These are also tray loading drives.
Tray loaning drives are, usually, better made, more robust drives that will last longer than the thin, slot loading type.

  • Super drive won't recognize audio CDs but will burn

Anything I can do about this?
When Audio CDs are inserted I will hear the drive attempting to load through several cycles then spit it out. Tried multiple CDs and CDs do work in CD player. ALL are original audio CDs not copies, cloned or burned. ALL are clean.
BLANK CDs will seat and allow me to burn through iTunes.
ALL DVDs load and play fine.
I feel like this suddenly happened but can't remember the last time I inserted an audio CD. I completely reformated (clean install) my HD last Thanksgiving, updated all drivers and programs I could find. (not sure about firmware for super drive but I think I found it was the lastest) I swear the CD ROM worked.
Got a new iPod at Christmas and it works fine. Itunes works fine!
Original Mac Mini and updated SuperDrive..... Info here:
I replaced original CD ROM drive with Super Drive about 4 years ago. There has never been a hardware issue. Clean install fixed random CD burn problem.
    Super Drive:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06:

    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz

    Ditto for like 2 years.
I have the exact! same problem. A lot of people confuse similar drive problems with ours when diagnosing.
Here's what I have found out, although after 2 years, I haven't been able to completely fix it.
Something related to my login is corrupt or missing. If I log in under my wife's login, and insert the audio cd, everything is perfect. Then if I switch back to my login, everything is perfect for again. However every cd must still be inserted under her login.
I really with this additional post will help somebody who has had this actually answer. It isn't a drive problem, or itunes problem.... and clearly a complete re install of osx isn't necessary.

  • HT2801 Why won't Windows 7 recognize the super drive?

Why won't windows 7 recognize the super drive?  I have set up and it was working yesterday.  I added a usb hup and a HDMI - Vga adapter to run two moniters?  When I booted everything up again I found out that windows would not reconize the super drive.  When I an running OS X, I have know issues.

    You tried everything here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    including
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    What does diagnostics show?

  • DVD super drive problem-does not eject

am facing strange problem with my DVD super drive. It does not eject when idle for some time and when its empty. I have a dual core Mac Pro with snow leapord OS. I have replaced it, updated the OS.. nothing fixes the issue.
it only ejects when I restart the mac pro.
Please help as it does not respond to eject key on keyboard also.
    Thanx in advance.

If nothing else works for you, when you hear sound of drive trying to open after pressing keyboard eject button, strike the box of mac pro on both sides of the drawer with clenched fists.
I have been doing this for years.

  • Where do I purchase a new super drive

I have been having issues with my super drive for a couple of months now and it will no longer burn DVD's.
I've tried to fix it and no luck, so I want to purchase a new internal drive for my G5 and replace the old one.
Can someone tell me, where I can buy this and what some models are that work with the G5's?
My current model only burns at 4x so it would be great to improve the speed if my G5 Dual 1.8 will support this.
    Thanks a lot,
    Chris

Have a look at the available options at OWC. The Pioneer DVR-112D will be a drop in replacement. If your current drive is also a Pioneer, you can reuse the standoffs (which raise the drive up to clear the drive bay door).
With any drive you purchase, you'll need to pop the front bezel off of the drive tray. It should lift up and off.

  • Gave mbp for super drive replacement ends up with display replacement as well

    Hey there,
My mbp 13" late 2011 was not reading any dvds but reading cds well so i gave it in under warranty to my authorized service provider, they asked me to keep the macbook for 3-4 days as they did not have the super drive in stock. I was supposed to get my laptop back today when i rang them up they tell me that just one part has arrived and not the other one! asked them what are the two parts and bam they tell me the super drive and the display.
I dont remember having any display issues or webcam issues so i asked them about it and they tell me while running some diagnostics tests they found that my webcam would fail soon and hence they are replacing the display unit as well.
Now i would like to know if they could really find out via the diagnostics about which part would fail in the near future or did they mess up the camera cable which is quite close to the super drive.
They are replacing the display in warranty but id like to still know so that i could avoid the service centre in future if it turns out that they had actually damaged the connector.
    thanks guys.

This is a technical site that users volunteer their time on.  Most forum users do not directly/officially question the Apple Genius Bar because they do not know the specifics of your case and do not have the Apple Repair Certification.  Also we are not allowed to, by terms of use.
Most advise you take it up the chain of Apple Support and through the store management itself.
    I am exiting this discussion.

  • Super drive quit working

I noticed older posts on the topic was wondering if there are current issues/solutions to this problem. I am using an Intel based MacBook Pro 15" with the Super drive being an HL-DT-ST-DVDRW GSA-S10N, I believe.  OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Turned on the computer and it spit out the dvd which was in it and now won't accept any dvd's or cd's at all. Spins for a few seconds and ejects them back out. Software is up to date.

SuperDrives die - just a fact of life. You can order a replacement from OWC and install it yourself. Apple will charge too much.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
