Super drive closes too fast

My super drive closes too fast. Also the drive is very sensitive and when I place a dvd on the drive, it will close right away. Many times catching the dvd at an angle and getting stuck with the dvd hanging out and the drive trying to close.
Is there a way to make the drive less sensitive? Is there a way to set the drive to only open and close when I press the eject button? I want to control when the drive opens and closes, I don't want it to be automatic.

Hi delnorte,
I agree with mooblie that your drive might be faulty.
My Mac Pro's Superdrive closes automatically after exactly 10 minutes.
I suppose there is a remote possibility that your Keyboard's eject button might be faulty. Do you have, or can you borrow, another keyboard to try out?
Also, possibly there might be a command in Terminal to sort out your problem, but I am afraid that I cannot advise you in that respect, because I do not have either the expertise or the confidence to delve into there.
I think Terminal is a no go area for many Mac users, which is probably a great shame, because, from reading articles in MacWorld UK and Mac Format, it is amazing just what can be done in there if you have the know-how.
If any "Terminal genius" is reading this, do you know of a solution therein?

Bill

  • DVD drive spinning far too fast on Equium

I have a problem with my DVD disc drive spinning far too fast to me. I have Windows XP on my Toshiba Equium laptop.
I haven't found any way to set CD / DVD spin speed.
I don't know if there is any, but I have used such feature in an other computer, and I would really much like to slow down the speed.
The problem with speed is not malfunction.
I don't face the problem with DVD:s, but the drive is too effective with CD:s, its literally too powerful.
The speed and noise are insane. If I touch the computer or the table where computer is, the shaking hurts my hands.
It's like a motor saw, and also sounds a bit loud.
I can't hear the game I play while CD is spinning.
I wonder the sturdy construction of my computer, while it's still not broken.

    Hello
I don't know which notebook model do you have but Toshiba has designed small tool for such purposes. It is acoustic silencer. When you watch DVD movei or when you listen music CD you can switch into silent mode and you will not hear that DVD drive works.
Visit Toshiba support page and check if this tool is available for your notebook model too.
    Bye

  • Super drive does not stay close

I was using my super drive and suddenly it did not want to stay close, every time I put a disc or without it and close it stays close a few seconds then opens up and if I try to close, closes just for a few seconds then opens up again.
I have a sony dvd RW DW-Q28A. Does the super drive is broken? or can be fixed.
    Thanks

Try removing everything from your USB connectors except Apple keyboard / Apple mouse.

  • Nvidia driver causes "INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast"

Hi.  I'm having lot's of trouble getting my nvidia card working.  I checked out more threads than I'd like to list.  Although there's lot's of stuff on this error, there's little on nvidia (more on radeon, but nothing helped so far).  I've looked at
    http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?id=2889
among other arch forum threads and non-arch forum pages too.
This is a new install on an ASUS N53S.
During my initial install of Arch, I went with the xf86-video-intel-sna driver because the wiki recommended installing proprietary nvidia drivers after X is working.  The intel driver worked fine and I got my desktop up and running no problem.
But if I try switching to either the nvidia driver (as per the wiki) or the nouveau driver I get this message at startup (and slim fails to start)
INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
If I try "startxfce4", it spits out some stuff, culminating in "Fatal server error: no screens found"
The card is NVIDIA GeForce GT550M
I can't tell if the problem is with the driver, xorg.conf, or slim (or something else).  Any help would be great.  Thanks.

Awesome.  Thanks so much for your help.  I just followed the Bumblebee wiki, and it seems to be working.
When I do "optirun glxspheres", it takes 5 or 6 seconds to run the thing.  Is that normal?
    Also, here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bu … VIDIA_card
I'm not sure what to make of
    options bbswitch load_state=0 unload_state=0
I check the documentation and their example give values of 0 and 1 respectively.  It's clear what the values mean, but I'm not sure WHAT is being referred to as loaded and unloaded.  What values are the likely ones that I want?

  • Videos play too fast on ipad - sounds like super high speed mini mouse

We just bought the ipad and when we play videos on vimeo or youtube they play at an ultra high speed like the fps is messed up - it sounds like a record being played too fast
Is this our ipad or a setting - we are worried because we do not see the problem listed anywhere else.
    Thanks!

Have your rebooted/restarted your iPad? you do that by pressing the Home and power/sleep button at the same time until the slider to power off the iPad appears. Slide the slider and when screen activity stops depress the two buttons again until the Apple logo appears. When the iPad completes rebooting try again to see if that solved your problem.

  • Close captioning appears and disappears too fast

My wife is deaf and depends on closed captioning.  When we use the built-in caption on a FIOS HD/DVR, the speed at which captioning appears and disappears is too fast to read.  If I view the same channel using one of our TVs built in captioning capability, it is fine.  Unfortuately,  we need to use the FIOS captioning capability for a projector that does not have built in captioning.  How do I slow down the speed of the captioning?

I am having the same problem. I have been told by Verizon support, that they do not offer CC service within their box, and that CC must be turned on from the TV.
Of course, that doesn't work in High Def mode on our TV, so we are forced to use standard definition, with a high def receiver and TV
It is also annoying to use the TV's CC decoder, as the TV CC decoder doesn't disable when you pull up the FiOS guide, therefore making it impossible to read the guide.
When using the built-in CC service of the Box, the CC service is disabled while using the menus or browsing the guide.
Comcast, Dishnetwork, and DirecTV all support closed captioning within their set top box. Verizon FIOS Does not ? (even though the box can physically do it, but Verizon has chosen to cripple it)
I am 99% happy with the Fios quality... but that they are choosing to not support the CC service is disappointing.

Thank you for the fast reply. The second link includes the solution. I takes me abou 2,5 hours to make this, but it works. Thank you for help!

There is a mistake in the description. After I installed Mac OSX on the external device, I have to make an update of the software. Otherwise it is not possible to install the "Super Drive Update 3.0". Please correct for other users.

  • Super slow super drive - iMac 27´i7

Hi! I baught a new iMac 27´ i7 th 27th of December 2011, and the super drive is super slow! It reads 0,1 MBs. How can ifix it?

I have a similiar issue. I bought a new 27" i7 upgraded the RAM too. When I back up DVDs on my older macbook (not a Pro) 13" the drive is much faster. The drive on the iMac is much slower too. You would think a more expensive and much newer iMac would have a faster drive. Starting to think I got a bum drive.

  • Can I run 4 super drives with my Mac Mini Server

I have Lion Server downloaded to my Mac Mini (set up as a TV server) and would like to be able to access the 4 USB Super Drive ports via other Mac Mini's in other rooms, 2 Apple TV's if possibe through Apple TV software and maybe Macbook Pro via AirPlay. Are these things possible. The Mac Mini Server is the Best Home television distribution network. Cheaper hardware and fast internet connection based on devices. The above is my goal.
    My individual questions...
Can I place 4 Super Drives in the 4 USB slots and run them?
What is the most effiecent way to be able to server those drives on ONLY my Apple Network (other Mac Mini and 2 Apple TV's)
Can I access multiple drives at once from different devices on my Apple Network?
Can I restrict access to teen and child users based on the TV Rating displayed on DVD in Super Drive? (ex: iTunes recognizes CD's by times of songs and digital fingerprint when I input my Store bought CD or adds it to the Database if its a new title.)
    These would help so much!
    Thanks,
    Stefan
Have any questions on how to turn your Mac into a home Multimedia System, ask.

    no
a dvd drive can never be shared over a network in order to play the dvd drives content
the dvd encryption makes this imposible
you have to rip (which is illegal) each dvd disc to a computer in order to do what you wish to do
and it's not an apple thing it's the case no matter which computer you own

  • Can't burn disc via iTunes. Burn speed too fast. AGAIN!

"iTunes can't burn this CD because the burn speed is too fast for your CD burner or media. Choose a lower speed in the burning pane of iTunes Preferences then try burning again".
I have been having on going problems burning CD’s in iTunes for YEARS, and I know I am not the only one. I get the error message above. Having checked the forum at the time, and posted for help, I am know there is no real solution except to change brand of disc.
Thing is, now I can’t get ANY brands to work. I’ve been through Verbatim, Maxell, JVC, Sony, but none work. The only brand that would work were TDK audios which I can no longer find anywhere.
I know its not the burner, as Toast works fine, and I know I am not alone. Anyone got any ideas?
Even after years Apple seem to be blanking this question. It’s very frustrating not being able to burn my purchased itunes downloads to disc.

To anyone who is interested I think I may have found a possible solution. When you put a blank disc in the drive, wait about 30-60 seconds or so for it to stop spinning before burning.
This seems to work. It's a bit sticky but eventually works. I tried both TDK & Maxwell discs and 9 out of 11 worked. Absolutely no reason why the other 2 didn't, but it's a lot better than none.

  • Super Drive No Longer Recongized With 10.4.8

I just updated and my Intel Mac Mini 10.4.8 no longer reconized my Super Drive. Help me.

If it's an Intel mac mini, then the instructions you were given to reset the PMU aren't the right ones.
The correct instructions for what on an Intel box is called an 'SMC reset' are as follows (you'll see you DON'T hold the power button until after the reconnect:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
The fact that your DVD burner isn't recognised in the profiler means that if an SMC reset doesn't fix it, it's almost certainly going to need service.
You will not be able to select any of the keyboard startup options with the keyboard you currently use since, in simple terms, the Mac won't correctly recognise that keyboard and thus correctly read the key press until AFTER it is started up - by which of course it's too late. An Apple, or specifically Apple compatible USB keyboard would be needed for alternative startup options.

  • ITunes CD Burn error (media too fast)??

I upgraded to the latest iTunes version and now Im getting errors when I try to burn a playlist. I havent burned a cd off this computer in a long time, so Im not sure if it's iTunes. However, the error, if I remember correctly, said iTunes is unable to burn the playlist because the requested speed is too fast for the burner or the media.
I tried slowing my burning speed to 8X, but it still gave me the error.
Any suggestions? Is it time for a new drive? If so, what are my options? I have the blue CRT (500mhz) iMac.
    Thanks

Since my original post, I have been able to burn a cd, but still most of the time get the error. Why would it work sometimes, and not other times?
Im guessing the drive is going. Can it be replaced? Are there upgrades available for the CRT iMacs ?

  • Slim "Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"

    Hello Everyone,
Slim "Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"
This error drives my crazy I changed to slim after the recent change of gdm.
Since I changed, when I boot my PC this error always occurs. Only solution so far is either to wait for 5 minutes  or to change to another TTY#, login and try init 3 and then init 5 (which only works sometimes but most of the time delivers the same error).
The error doesn't occur when I REboot the PC.
    I start slim via inittab with "x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null"
I already tried the German Arch-Forum but got no reply.
There is a topic http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=81159 with the "solution" to change inittab
    "x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null"
    to
    "x:5:once:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null"
but this doesn't work for me, slim then refuses completly to start.
I'd prefer to use the inittab method and not the daemon method...
    Thank you in advance

    Hi,
"generally" X seems to work fine. I use Openbox without any problems. If I try /usr/bin/slim from init 3 it says: "Stale lockfile found, removing it" and then nothing happens - the console just stays on.
I haven't changed my Xorg for ages, I still use the same X configuration (besides updates) that I had years ago with kdm and then with gdm. Even when I switched from gdm to slim I just follwed to wiki and changed the Inittab line from gdm to slim.
Heres my Inittab and my Xorg.conf (to be honest I'm not really fit with Xorg configuration...)
To be sure, I just created a (very basic) new Xorg.conf with nvidia-xconfig.

    Just out of curiosity:
A lot seems to have changed in Xorg.conf since my old ~2years old config was made.
I had to turnoff boot logo manually and set Option "Composite" "Enable" but now everything seems to work by default?
Do you see any flaws in my xorg.conf? Any ideas for improvements (except metamodes)?

  • How would I get a super drive installed?

I don't currently have my MacBook, but I did order one with a combo drive because I couldn't afford to upgrade to the 2.0 GHz version and get the super drive. So my question is, how easy is it to upgrade to a super drive on my own after I get the MacBook? Is it possible? How much would it cost?

    wantedtobeyour-
i agree with the above posts. if you really want a superdrive for its dvd capabilities, i would recommend that you loan the money from somewhere, somehow and change and upgrade your order. it would be a hassle to upgrade later on in the road. it is not as easy as upgrading the RAM or hard drive.
plus, to comment on the last post, buying an external dvd drive is not a bad idea at all. the superdrive that macbook offers is rather quite slow. you can purchase an external drive at half price, if not, fraction of the price of the superdrive upgrade in the future. and plus, the performance would be much faster.
if you are a traveler and need the dvd drive in handy at all times, you should get the macbook with the superdrive installed. if you do your dvd burning at home and not travel around so much, get an external drive.
    hope this helps
