Super Drive / Dual Layer DVD's

Can a Super Drive in a Power Mac G4 Burn the new Dual Layer DVD's ? If not, what do I use to get more capacity than the standard 4.7 gig DVD's.
Thanks
WM-300

Hi-
The info I relayed, was in regard to the DVR- 109, not the DVR-111......poor proof reading on my part. You will notice the link (in my second post), and intended recommendation, was to the DVR-109. This drive needs a flash to reach full potential, made possible by Las Vegas' utility:
http://lasvegas.rpc1.org/
The DVR-111 needs no firmware flashing, except to alter media support, or remove region code restrictions.
Sorry to have caused any confusion ......... at least wm300 figured out what I was getting on about.

  • Hard Drive Backup on Dual Layer DVD's

    I am only using 13 gigs of my 60 gig(actually 55gig) hard drive, I don't have a FireWire cable or external hard drive to make a bootable backup of my Tiger OS. However, just to retain all the info on my hard drive, can I just burn the contents of my hard drive on 2 dual layer dvd's on my external LG Super Multi-Format cd/dvd burner, using Burn, so that I am at least saving all the info on my hard drive, even if not in bootable form? Thanks, Ken.

    A backup to discs is better than no backup. An external Firewire connected HD would be better (it's bootable).
    Rather than Burn, look at Mac Backup - Mac Backup Software, Hardware, and Guides for Your Mac

  • Dual Layer DVD drive in Power Mac G4?

    Hi,
    I ordered a Power Mac G4 and I have an internal dual layer DVD drive with lightscribe built into it. I installed it in my PC awhile ago and it works fine but I want to know if it will work in a Power Mac G4 running OS X (Tiger/Leopard)? The model number is IDVD16DLS and it's manufactured by I/O Magic. It's a really good drive and I hope it works on Mac.

    Optical drives sold by I/O Magic are usually manufactured by any of a number of electronics plants in China. The drive will undoubtedly function in your G4, but it may not respond to booting with the C key depressed or boot the computer after having been designated as the startup disk. I tried a Memorex (LG-manufactured) DVD±RW drive in a B&W G3 (Panther), and even with the PatchBurn profile, the only way to force it to boot from a bootable CD/DVD disk was to immediately close the tray, after it would spin up/down at startup and eject the disk. I removed that drive and installed a Pioneer DVR±RW drive like this one in black or beige. The Pioneer burner boots the computer without the extra persuasion. Tiger is more forgiving of a third-party drive, than the previous OS X versions. As for the LightScribe function, you'll probably need to look for third-party, Mac-compatible labeling software.

  • Optical drive won't burn dual layer dvd

    Yes, mine is capable of burning Dual layer dvds. It was the $1299 Core 2 Duo version 1 rev. ago. Got it in October. In the System Profiler it says DVD-Write: +R DL.
    So, I stick a +R DL disk in there, and every time I go to write to it, the disc gets spit out and it says please insert a blank dvd. Now, you might think I'm inserting full DVD+r DL disks, however, that's impossible, because this is my only dvd writer I own and there is no way every disk in my pack came out of the box full of data.
    Is there a brand that is guaranteed to work, does just my optical drive suck, or do all optical drives in macbooks suck and it's just a silly joke? I've seen quite a few threads claiming their dual layer writers don't work.

    I'm also having difficulties burning DL discs. I'm using Toast Titanium 7.1.2 and I just got done with 30+ minutes of burn time only to receive an error stating "The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR; Sense Code = 0x02; NO SEEK COMPLETE"
    I've been trying to use Windata DVD+R DL discs and I've got a nice collection of coasters so far. Is this something I should use my AppleCare to try to address, or is this a media issue?
    I have experienced the EXACT same problem using Memorex DVD+R DL discs (not my fave), so I do not believe this has anything to do with the brand of discs.

  • Burning Dual Layer DVD's on Pioneer drives

    Hi everyone,
    I have a Pioneer DVD burning that I installed on my G4 PowerPC (OS 10.4.11)- I forget the model #, but I know it's a DL burner. I'm using Toast 9 to burn my media. My question is, which DVD-/+R DL media is the best to use on Pioneer drives. I typically have problems burning Sony, Maxell and (sometimes) Memorex media. Normally TDK and Philips work best, but I've never burned a dual layer dvd before.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

    This site suggests those two as well as Verbatim, and points out that only certain countries of origin, or certain Authorized dealers can be trusted:

    Use caution in selecting media -- unless you have an 8X drive, 8X media will give "laser calibration errors" and not work.

  • Will iTunes recognize dual layer DVDs/drives for backing up purchases?

    If I have a dual layer dvd in a drive that supports dual layer burning, will itunes be able to use it to its fullest capacity?

    DaddyPaycheck,
    Just after i posted my message i thought i'd pop in a DL DVD in the drive, open Toast and see again what Toast would do.
    Lo and behold, i check disk capacity in Toast and it shows the full 8GB. So i'm currently copying a 6GB DV file to the DL DVD ... so far so good. I want to see if it completes the task this time without errors.
    I'll know within 15 minutes whether it worked. Holding my breath ....

  • Please recommend a dual layer dvd writer drive...

    For my Dual 2.0 GHz G5.
    Looking for something reliable, fast, cheap and will write dual-layer dvds as well as all the other usual stuff.
    Thank you

    Hi Red Havoc.
    I've got the same machine and I fitted a Pioneer DVR - 115D and it runs fine. You have to play a bit with the height of the screws to get it to fit snugly. I couldn't use the black knurled screws on the original drive cos it rides too high with them and the tray gets caught on the edge of the aperture. I think I just used some long hard drive screws in the end. It' quite straightforward.
    There's a bloke on eBay who is doing them for about 25 quid at the mo.
    I think any Pioneer optical drive will fit plug and play as they supply all the Apple originals anyway.
    Good luck,

  • Leopard Dual Layer DVD, Macbook drive

    Well i'm planning upon purchasing leopard but i was wondering, does the 13inch macbook 1.8ghz model have a DVD reader capable of reading dual layer DVDs? I was wondering because i've noticed its called a Combo drive. Also when i bought my macbook, it came with tiger install DVDs, single layer, two of them. Anyone whos been able to install leopard on their macbook 13inch 1.8ghz proccessor, it would be great if you could just post a reply saying it works. I cant wait to order

    Thanks for the reply, but the only thing that makes me think now is, my drive cant burn DVDs, however it can read them, i suppose i only have to find one of my old windows DL DVDs and just try mounting them,
    Thanks

  • Blu Ray drive/burner can't write dual layer DVD - W500 Vista 64

    I recently did a clean Vista 64 Business install on a new hard drive. I pretty much have everything up and going, except the Blu Ray drive doesn't recognize that it can write dual layer DVDs. I ran Nero InfoTool and it, too, tells me that the drive cannot write dual layer DVDs. (Pretty much everything in InfoTool is checked, read and write, except all the HD-DVDs and the dual layer DVD write functions.) Does anyone have any ideas? My understanding is that the drive can write dual layer DVDs.

    I'll answer this with the same information that I posted at TPF:
    From: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70234
    Reads or writes data with speedy maximum data transfer rates of:
    * 16x maximum (writing to CD-R media)
    * 10x maximum (writing to CD-RW media)
    * 5x maximum (writing to DVD-RAM media)
    * 8x maximum (writing to DVD+/-R media)
    * 4x maximum (writing to DVD+/-RW media)
    * 2x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE SL media)
    * 1x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE DL media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-ROM, CD-R media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-RW media)
    * 8x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R SL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R DL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-RW/+RW media)
    * 5x maximum (reading DVD-RAM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-ROM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-R/RE SL/DL media)
    It appears that DL (dual layer) writing in DVD-R and DVD+R formats is not supported.

  • Satellite P30-145: drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs

    I have a Satellite P30-145 with a DVD SupermultiDL drive. When I first got the PC I could write dual layer DVDs without any problems. Now the drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs at all. Even ones from the same box that worked fine previously. I'm using Verbatim Double Layer DVD+R 2.4x discs.
    After much searching on the internet I downloaded and ran DVDInfoPro. This application reported that the drive did not support DVD+RW DL. Very strange!!
    Can anyone help? The drive is a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-831S.

    Hi Lan
    This drive is definitely DL one but I can just imagine that drive is defective and can not calibrate lens in the right position. This notebook model is more that two years old and if you have used this drive intensively I can really imagine that DL function is defective.
    What you can do is to clean the lens and see it this will help.

  • Can the LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive burn dual-layer dvds?

    It's a LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive, I think it's part number is 575781-501. It came in my HP Pavilion Elite HPE-380t. I was customizable up to blue ray but I stuck with the standard. Now I'm not sure whether I should invest in Dual Layer DVDs, because I don't know if my drive is capable of writing to them. Does anyone know?

    According to these two sources, yes the drive is capable of writing to dual layer DVDs.

    Hi. Can my 2005 iBook G4 1.33Ghz 1.5G ram OS X 10.4.11 with combo drive read double layer or dual layer DVDs? I couldn't find any definite info anywhere. Thanks a lot!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, humain.
    I have been burning DL DVDs from another Mac for quite some time now. Never had any problems with the DVDs being unreadable on my PowerBooks except when there was a bad batch of discs, which then meant only the Mac that burned the disc could read it.

  • Trouble burning dual layer dvd's with my superdirve

    Hello, my question is regarding burning dual layer dvd's on my macbook pro. After finishing up a 5.6 GB movie in DVDSP4, i exported as an image (burned it as a .img) and then opened it up in disk utility for burning. Upon execution, i received an error message that said " the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." I then tried burning the .img via DVDSP4 as well as the standard drag to disk on my desktop, all with the same luck. When trying the standard drag, drop and burn method (burn folder on my desktop), i received the error code 0X80020022.
    After having no luck, i tested my super drive with standard CD's and single layer DVD's which it burned to just fine. I then tried switching media from memorex dvd dl +r's to sony dl + r's, but unfortunately it just refuses to burn to dual layer.
    Any ideas as to what might be the problem?
    Thanks.
    Terry

    Great Job
