Super Drive in my Intel iMac making noise

My 21" Intel iMac (v.10.8.3) super drive just started making this chattering sound when I inserted a disc.
I had copied 4 CD's to iTunes, then the fifth started to make that loud chattering noise.
I ejected the disc and cleaned it up but that didn't help.

One more long shot...
PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

  • Has anyone ued a pnm2ppa driver in an Intel iMac?

I can use my old HP 722C printer in the XP partition of my new Intel iMac, but even though the iMac System Profiler recognizes that I have an IEEE-1284 USB cable attached to a 720C series printer, the printer will not print in the OS X partition.
A search found a pnm2ppa driver that is supposed to work with Mac OS X. Has anyone had any experience with this driver on an >Intel< iMac?

This install is not for the faint of heart.

  • USB external Super Drive not recognized by iMac

Bought a new USB external Super Drive a few days ago (from Apple shop).
Plugged into my iMac 21.5", late 2013, and the iMac does not seem to want to recognise it.
Checked Finder and necessary boxes ticked up to show on Desktop, also does not show through remote devices.
Any help would be appreciated. Not a techie and 90 miles from my Apple shop. Not even sure I have filled the dam request in correctly (sorry).

Oddjob, the optical drive itself never shows up on the desktop,. What happens when you insert a disc? If a disc doesn't show up first check your connection. Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
There's also the possibility that the drive is bad.

  • Where can I get a new hard drive for my intel imac?  **** thing dumped, less than 3 years old.

This is my first mac and the **** hard drive crashed in only 2+ years and of course the waranty is expired.  Can I replace the hard drive with any 3.5" replacement or do I need something special.  And if I do where can I get it?  I didn't see anything specifically for an intel imac at apple store.  I don't want to pay apple to install it, already spent enough money on this disappointing purchase.

any 3.5" Sata drive will do.  I recommend http://www.macsales.com/, or http://www.newegg.com/

  • Can i put a bigger hard drive in my intel imac?

    Hi,
Is it possible to replace the internal hard drive in my 17" imac Intel core duo for a larger capacity drive?
I did this on the first gen G5 imac ok but i'm not sure about the intel model, i was thinking of a 250gb or something.
What type of drive would it be, 3.5" SATA?

The following is quoted from Section 700.10.c of the Magnussen-Moss Warranty Act:
    (c) No warrantor may condition the continued validity of a warranty on the use of only authorized repair service and/or authorized replacement parts for non-warranty service and maintenance. For example, provisions such as, “This warranty is void if service is performed by anyone other than an authorized ‘ABC’ dealer and all replacement parts must be genuine ‘ABC’ parts,” and the like, are prohibited where the service or parts are not covered by the warranty. These provisions violate the Act in two ways. First, they violate the section 102 (c) ban against tying arrangements. Second, such provisions are deceptive under section 110 of the Act, because a warrantor cannot, as a matter of law, avoid liability under a written warranty where a defect is unrelated to the use by a consumer of “unauthorized” articles or service. This does not preclude a warrantor from expressly excluding liability for defects or damage caused by such “unauthorized” articles or service; nor does it preclude the warrantor from denying liability where the warrantor can demonstrate that the defect or damage was so caused.

  • Super Drive louder on new iMac?

We just got the new iMac home and am transfering our backups from cd/dvds and the super drive is considerable louder then the iMac G5 we took back. Is this normal for the drive in this iMac, or is this a problem whith my machine?

    Hallo,
I have the same or at least very similar question.
Just ordered the 21.5" imac with 1TB fusion drive. I need to transfer 450GB of photos from my old windows PC to the new imac set-up. This set-up will include some drive(s) for back-up, but not sure yet which drives.
Just moving the 450GB of photos to imac HD seems a bit much: with photos, applications and some other stuff 60-70 % of the imac HD would allready be consumed up right from the start.
I am using Lightroom for organizing, editing, etc.  of my pictures. So this should run as smooth as possible.
Any advice on a good configuration on how to work with iMac, Lightroom, 500 GB of pictures, external HD, back-up is welcome.
    thanks,
    Maarten

  • Minor problem after swapping boot drive in 24" intel iMac

After cloning a healthy internal 750 GB boot drive (24" early 2008 iMac) to a new 2T seagate drive and swapping them, everything seems fine except that every time I open an application, I get a warning window saying I'm opening the application for the first time. How can I fix this?
    Thanks, David

Thanks for the response. It was happening multiple times upon opening any application. Now, magically after your response, it's not happening even on apps I haven't opened since the swap. Your mojo is very powerful, you could make a fortune as an online tech fixer.

  • Intel iMac making intermittent error noises

    Hello all,
One of our machines is a 21" 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo G5 iMac running Tiger 10.5.8.
It works completely fine but makes a double thunk/dong noise every 5 mins or so, which is annoying and a bit worrying. It's the same noise that usually happen when you press a wrong key on the keyboard - an error noise.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I haven't managed to find anything in my searches.
    Thanks very much!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The sound you describe is called submarine and is found in System Preferences/Sound/Sound Effects.
What appears to be happening is that something is set to run periodically, like checking for new email as an example, and is not working or getting an error, so you get this error sound effect. Do you have any apps running that periodically check for something?

  • IMac making noises.

My imac recently started making a fan noise upon start up that with time can (not always) increase in sound level which = my concern and irritation.  I have downloaded the widget that monitors the temps and fan speed with the following results:
    HD: Mac = 94 degrees F
    CPU = 92                        Optical Drive = 697 rpm
    Heatsink = 94                  HD = 1189 rpm
    Airport Card = 94              CPU = 1198 rpm
    Ambient = 67
    GPU = 112
    GPU Diode = 108
    GPU Heatsink = 104
In addition I have also done a shut down and unplugged everything for >30 seconds but still the noise returns immediately upon startup.  The computer is not operating poorly, just the noise.  Any ideas, suggestions?  Thank you!

It MIGHT, just MIGHT, be a software issue. On my iMac G5, if I start up holding down the Option key, I get a loud fan noise all the while, from when it starts looking for drives with an OS on them, up until partway through the launch process after I select an OS. That's obviously a software cause, as it's the same routine that cuases the fan to start then stop, every time.
While there is a odd possibility of it being a sw issue, what your are describing is not.
What you are describing is a safety feature. When you are booted to the hardware or test disc (rather than a full system install) the system runs in a very limited mode. Often it does not see or read the data from the temperature sensors. So, what happens is the code on the board is designed to run the fans at a fixed speed that is higher than normal to prevent the system from overheating. An Xserve sitting on a bench running HW tests, with the back end pointed at a cork board, will cause papers to hang upside down the fans run so hard!

  • 20" intel iMAC fan noise

My iMAC's fan has begun to make a clicking noise like a card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel. Sometimes it's louder and sometimes it gets softer. Any ideas on what is causing it and how to fix it? Thanks

If you are sure it's a fan there really isn't anything you can do other than calling Apple and having a it serviced.

  • Late 2009 Mac Mini odd Super Drive Loading and Ejecting Noise

I have had no problems with my Mac Mini until now. Just today I inserted a disk into the super drive and it made a different noise to usual as it took the disk. Also, when I ejected it, it made different noise to what it usually makes. The drive still reads and writes fine it is just the loading and ejecting noise I am worried about.
    Help would me much appreciated
    cp1996

Sounds like you should be expecting the drive to fail more or less any time now. If the thing is still under warranty, take it in and try to get it replaced. There is a category for abnormal noise when selecting the failure type, so you should have a decent chance. But only if it's under warranty.

  • Can an intel iMac run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive?

Hi can anyone please tell me if it is possible to run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive on an Intel iMac running OSX 10.5 Leopard or later?
Or is it possible to partition the intel iMac's hard drive and add Tiger?
At the moment I am running Tiger on a partitioned hard drive shared with OSX Leopard and wish to upgrade to an intel Mac. I need tiger to run some software not compatible with newer Macs and also to access OS9 Classic. Thanx for your help.

IF you upgraded from Panther as you know you do not have an Intel based iMac. I beleive the limit of your upgrades on your current machine is going to be Leopard. The system requirements for Snow Leopard are:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply
This is straight from Apple so yes if you want to go beyond Leopard then you must purchase a new machine. My suggestion would be to begin replacing your legacy apps, you are extremely far behind and the longer you wait the more painful it will be to get current.
    Good luck.

  • Super drive makes loud whirring noise while the whole MacBook shakes...

Hi there folks. I've had my MacBook for about six months, and every time I put a (homemade) media CD or DVD into the super drive, it makes a horrendous loud noise continuously that's enough to drive me to drink! Not only that, the whole MacBook 'shakes' because of it, and the only way to stop that is to eject the CD/DVD.
But if I put an audio CD into the super drive, even if one burned by myself (as I'm a musician by trade), or if I put a commercial movie DVD into it, then it makes a [softer] noise (as if an airline about to take off) which then goes away.
Could someone perhaps explain this discrepancy, and tell me if there's a remedy? (I'd really like to watch my god-daughter play the piano in a QT movie - and hear her playing at the same time without shaking in my chair, you know!)

    Hi,
How often do you use your Drive? Do you use it every day all day? And how much have you used it. You might just need to replace it.
    Regards,
    Marc

  • Toast 7 on an Intel iMac

From what I read on this forum, it appears that all of the features of Toast 7 are available when running under Rosetta in an Intel Imac... Correct? Toast 7 is quite expensive and I want to make sure it is going to work before making the investment. In the Windows world I used Nero for just about everything and am trying to find an equivalent in the Mac world. Yes, I could install a Windows VM and use Nero I guess, but so far I haven't had much luck with application that depend heavily on the hardware.
On another forum I was told there isn't any way to read DVD-VR files on a Mac. When I tried the Mac tools I have, I didn't have any luck either. Anyone know if Toast 7 can be used with DVD+/-VR files (The files are being read from a DVD-RAM drive?)
     20" Intel iMac (2.0GB RAM, 500GB HD + 1.5TB external, 20" Cineama Display)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello,
Toast 7.1 is "Universal" so it has been updated for Intel processors and should run just fine on Intel Macs.
You can read the official statement here:
    http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/toast/version_history7.html
So, just make sure you get the latest 7.1 version (or install version 7 and download the update to 7.1).
So, you should be just fine using it on your Intel Mac.
As for DVD-VR, under the list of updates for 7.0.2 it says:
"Media Browser now correctly displays titles and chapters from CPRM protected DVD-VR discs."
    By performing the following search:
Link to results for: mac os x dvd-vr
I found that several programs were listed as permitting exporting / importing, and working with DVD-VR files.
So, check out those results by clicking on my link above and see if any of those are to your liking.
    I hope this helps.
