Super drive keeps trying to eject when there is no disk inside.

I recently dropped my phone onto the area to the right of the trackpad. Straight away the my computer starts trying to eject a cd. It tries 3 times before giving up. This happens everytime a wake up/restart the machine. I'm thinking maybe I knocked something loose with the impact? Will this be easy enough to fix. It works fine, just this noise everytime I open it up.

Good morning,
Sometimes, it’s difficult to distinguish between what is hardware and software induced problems. Repairing Permissions and/or Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) may resolve or at least help in the troubleshooting process.
Repair Permissions:
Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
Select: your Hard Drive
Select: the First Aid tab
Select: Repair Permissions
PMU
Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) is known to resolve certain anomalies and may well help with your symptom.
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.

  • IMac Keeps Trying To Eject.

My iMac keeps trying to eject every few minutes. The eject symbol appears on the screen and then the drive will attempt to eject whether there is a CD in there or not. This problem has only been happening for the past few days.
My eject button doesn't appear to be stuck down and the keyboard is only a few months old. Is it a case of me having a knackered keyboard or is it a glitch with my iMac? I realise it is hard to answer without seeing it but I'd like to know your opinions and whether this is a common problem.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hello Maharishi
A couple of test you can try:
    1. unplug your keyboard for a time and see if the problem stops!
    2. any old USB keyboard will work for testing, connect up another to see if the problem persist.
If you think or now know that your keyboard is the problem, take it to your local Apple Store or Apple Service Provider and ask them to test it. All of your iMac's hardware including the keyboard & mouse are covered for 1 year and for 3 years with AppleCare.

  • DVD super drive problem-does not eject

am facing strange problem with my DVD super drive. It does not eject when idle for some time and when its empty. I have a dual core Mac Pro with snow leapord OS. I have replaced it, updated the OS.. nothing fixes the issue.
it only ejects when I restart the mac pro.
Please help as it does not respond to eject key on keyboard also.
    Thanx in advance.

If nothing else works for you, when you hear sound of drive trying to open after pressing keyboard eject button, strike the box of mac pro on both sides of the drawer with clenched fists.
I have been doing this for years.

  • My superdrive keep trying to eject something

Been having this issues on and off where my superdrive is trying to eject a disc BUT there isn't a disc in there to eject. not sure what to do - all my software is up to date. any suggestions?

It's very possible the problem is hardware-related. Perhaps the sound is the drive trying to take in (not eject) a disc, because it senses a disc being inserted (even when there is no disc being inserted).
If you have not done so yet, try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that does not help, I would disconnect the iMac from power and reconnect it following the reset SMC procedure.

  • Internal iMac hard drive keeps trying to power down without my consent

How do you stop an internal hard drive from shutting down when you didn't ask it to?
    Background:
I use Missing Sync for Palm to sync my Palm handheld with my iMac. My Palm has a SD card slot it in and the sync software came with a program that allows me to mount the
SD card as an external drive on my iMac. From there, I can add podcasts, music or whatever I want directly to the card. I have used this software since March with no problems.
Also, when you put my computer to sleep or shut it down, there is a click and then the internal hard drive shuts down.
Last night, I activated the program to mount the SD card to my iMac and instead of it mounting, the iMac's internal hard drive started trying to shut down.
I have used this program many, many times to mount the SD card to my iMac with absolutely no problem. It was weird this time because I kept hearing that clicking noise. The computer became extremely sluggish. To me, it appeared that the internal hard drive was trying to shut down. After about 4-5 clicks, it succeeded and the computer froze.
Since that time, shortly after you turn the iMac on, you hear that clicking noise trying to power down the hard drive. Sometimes, it just takes a few clicks and the hard drive shuts off. Sometimes the computer will boot all the way up, I can log in and launch a program before it shuts off and the computer freezes. While I can't check the drive with First Aid or Diskwarrior because it shuts off before I can scan it, I assume the data and the drive are ok because I have been able to successfully boot from it and log into my account but shortly after I log in, the hard drive shuts down and the computer is stuck.
Any ideas? Any help would be wonderful!

You are right. It is failing. I took my Mac into the Apple Store and talked with a genius. Although the hard drive would not do what it had at home (typical when you're trying to get something diagnosed) I shut it down so he could hear the noise I do.
Sure enough, he said the noise I heard was the drive read head hitting its start position. When a hard drive shuts down, the drive head moves out of the way since the "hard disk" is actually a thin floppy magnetic disc. The noise I kept hearing was indeed the drive trying to shut down.
Fortunately, I did make a clone of my internal drive to that external drive 6 months ago so I was (eventually) able to copy over all the important files, update the external clone and boot off of it.
Sure enough, tonight, I opened Disk Utility and it said in plain red letters that the drive had reported a hardware failure and should be replaced.
Since my iMac is Summer 2001, the Mac Genius said they no longer carry parts for it so he gave me the name of a local place that would be glad to fix it up. I called them and luck would have it that they were completely out of the internal drives used by my model iMac. So I have to check next week to see if they have received more in yet.
The good news is I can get a slightly larger interal hard drive since I was down to 10GB of a 60GB factory drive. So far, I hear I can go as high as 160GB but the RPM must be lower since my iMac has no fans.
Thanks for your help! As much as I didn't want to believe it, you hit the problem right on.

  • CD/DVD drive is trying to eject CD but cannot

I hear the CD/DVD drive trying to eject a CD but it appears to be jammed in there. I hear a muffled popping sound and the ejector working. Any help is appreciated. Tried the Restart with the left mouse button but did not work.

Hi. I had a similar problem. If I tilted the screen back to 45 degrees, the disc ejected,so it was obviously a mechanical problem. It was solved by a new disc unit. David.

  • Hi - my Imac's hard drive keeps starting and stopping, when the imac is idle.  The Imac is working perfectly otherwise.  Any ideas?

Hi my 4 year old Imac's hard drive keeps starting, whirring briefly, then stopping, when the machine is asleep.  Doesn't do it when in actual use.  The Imac is working perfectly otherwise.  Any ideas?

Gracias mi amigo; there are a lot of options on the side bar in console, but I think I can see the issue - calendar agent - thousands of entries, all identical. Recently installed outlook 2011, so ? conflicting with Ical?

  • My CD drive keeps making strange noises when macbook first turns on or wakes from sleep

    Any ideas?

It started a few months ago, but I got the macbook about 3 years ago. It seems that it doesn't make noises when there is a disc inserted, but when it's empty it does (very embarrassing in a quiet library!) - it's almost like it's satisfied when full of food, but it rumbles when it's hungry. Any ideas?

  • Super drive keeps spitting out discs

Hi, my mum is trying to burn photos from i-photo library to a disc. The i-book keeps spitting it out. She tried another disc and it spit that out too. She even tried playing a disc thats worked on it before and it spat that out too. It isn't showing the disc on the desktop. It did accept the original blank disc once after several tries and started the burn but then spat it out with a message that said something about burn failing because it couldnt calibrate the laser or something.
Any ideas would be welcome. The machine is less than 3 years old, and doesn't get heavy use. Its rarely on the internet so probably hasnt had any updates since I did them when I visited last January.

    Hi there:
Given the computer's lack of use (online, or in general?) a certain amount of
preventative maintenance could be done at about any time, and alleviate a
chance something is acting up in the system; and it isn't a hardware issue.
Things such as starting up in SafeBoot (shift key held) then log in to the Mac,
then run Disk Utility and have it 'repair disk permissions' and restart. This is
not a fix for a specific problem; but is part of a general background action a
Mac running OS X could find some help from having this done. I have and use
OnyX from Titanium Software (download, runs free - is a donationware) to
keep on top of various background maintenance routines otherwise not done.
There is a curious and almost desperate (yet it works for some users) answer
to the situation where discs eject and don't work; and I found this idea from a
search, after a bit of reading: "A fix for my superdrive problems" - & comments:
    http://bura-bura.com/blog/archives/2005/07/11/a-fix-for-my-superdrive-problems/
A computer kept in top condition and updated, sometimes finds new issues in
some update or upgrade, but if the issue can be isolated and troubleshooted,
one can learn if this is hardware based or software based. And, if the computer
has the optional AppleCare Plan (adds two more years) repairs may be covered.
The superdrive may be defective; even if not used much. Or, it may be a simple
issue in the software. See the link above, for a novel and voodoo-like cure!
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • TM just keeps trying to backup when disk is sleeping

I have a G-Tech backup disk that for some reason goes to sleep often. Whenever this occurs, the TM appl. trys to backup and just keeps running. When in this condition I have to turn off the backup drive hardware and turn it back on to get things working again. I don't have the box checked that would allow the OS to put the backup drive to sleep when idle, but the drive goest to sleep anyway.

Check the manual about sleeping. My LaCie has an auto position between off and on that allows it to sleep, but before TM starts a backup, the LaCie drive wakes up. Some drives may not have this option, in which case they have to run all the time which can shorten their life.
You might contact G-Tech to see if they have a solution for this problem. For some reason, the TM signal is not waking it up. It may be a simple firmware update for the G-Tech drive??

  • Monitor keeps trying to brighten when turned on.

I have a Apple 30" Cinema HD monitor. My computer is a Mac Pro with OS 10.5.8 Each night I turn off my computer, and then the next day after I come back from work I turn it on again. Lately, when I turn it on, I've noticed the increase brightness onscreen indicator keeps appearing (every few seconds) as if I'm continually pushing the brightness button. Some times the screen boots up at the lowest setting without me touching it. If I push the increase brightness button, the screen just automatically goes dark again when I let go. Usually, these problems go away on their own after a while, but one or the other seems to happen every day now. What's going on? Is this harmful?

    Hi Chrissy,
Sadly it sounds like a Dying or dead drive.
Try this just in case, the Disk Utility again...
    PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

  • Ipod keeps asking to restore when there's nothing wrong

Just got a new 5th Gen ipod for christmas. When I turn it on i frequently get the apple logo followed by a request to plug the ipod into the computer and restore it. When I turn it off and back on, the apple logo returns but then it goes onto the menu and the ipod works normally.
I don't want to have to restore it and start fresh, but it is annoying. Can anybody give me any tips?

No i'm keeping it on the same computer. I haven't restored it yet, i know it sounds lazy but its a bit of a hassle as I update my ipod manually so it would take a fair hour to drag all the songs back onto it.
If nobody has had any similar problems and found out how to solve it, then I may have to try restoreif it gets worse.
