Super Drive not so super??

I have a week old MBP and decided to use the Super Drive to burn some DVD's.
This is an already made project. I have the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS files that I use to make DVD's. I have always used Nero and just put the files on it and set it to go. It usually takes about 15 minutes a disk for a 115 min project.
On the MBP, I am nearly to 2 hours now. It finished burning and is now verifying.
What is up with this?
Why is it taking so long? The OX reported that the disk was burnable at 8x, should have taken 15 minutes like my PC does.
Please help, this is not better.
Thanks,
Kirk

Thanks for the reply. I did get a quote, as per my previous post: "The MacStore in my area wants to charge $40 just to look at my laptop. God knows how much it'd cost for the 'repair'." It's the only Mac retailer / service center in my city (other than places that sell but don't service Macs) and they charge $40 / hr, minimum of $40 charge just to look at a computer; not including repair (if the repair takes over 1 hour, not including parts).
I've searched these forums (and other websites) for a solution, and given that this is likely a driver issue, my only real solution is to roll-back my BootCamp or drivers - which others have reported being far more destructive than constructive.
I'm confident it was cheaper to buy the external drive from NewEgg, and I'm quite happy with it. It burns far faster than my built-in SuperDrive ever did, and I get to use it on my other laptops. I've never had to "burn on the road", so, no big deal I guess that I can't use the built-in drive.
I don't have AppleCare - I've heard "SUCH" great things about Macs (e.g. "They can't get viruses!" lawlz), and it was bought as a secondary computer. My HP came with one year warranty, unlimited phone calls and quick e-mail response (no joke, I've had to use it). My Mac? 90 days? My MacBook Pro cost twice as much, and other than having a brighter screen, it's been a worse purchase on all accounts.

  • USB external Super Drive not recognized by iMac

Bought a new USB external Super Drive a few days ago (from Apple shop).
Plugged into my iMac 21.5", late 2013, and the iMac does not seem to want to recognise it.
Checked Finder and necessary boxes ticked up to show on Desktop, also does not show through remote devices.
Any help would be appreciated. Not a techie and 90 miles from my Apple shop. Not even sure I have filled the dam request in correctly (sorry).

Oddjob, the optical drive itself never shows up on the desktop,. What happens when you insert a disc? If a disc doesn't show up first check your connection. Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
There's also the possibility that the drive is bad.

  • Super drive not reading dvd r

Help! Super drive isn't reading a dvd+r anymore. I've had my macbook pro for about 4months. Dvd+r is clean and has worked before. Note: All other Dvd and Cd's are being read just fine.

The media may be quite different from one manufacturer to another. Verbatim ha been found to have less errors and be more durable. Apple itself uses Verbatim (the CDs and DVDs suppplied with Macs are Verbatim). Having said that, you have your own milleage.
All the Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHz, Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3GHz & Power Mac G5
Quad 2.5GHz can indeed burn to DVD+R DL as described in:
    http://www.apple.com/powermac/specs.html
Optical drive 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW). 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW); writes DVD-R discs at up to 16x speed, writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 6x speed, reads DVDs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-R and CD-RW discs at up to 24x speed, reads CDs at up to 32x speed
But my question is can you burn brand new DVD-R DL (double layer) --not just DVD+R DL-- with such superdrive in the PowerMac G5?

  • Super Drive Not Functioning. Hardware? Software?

CDs will not open. When I try a DVD I get a message that says: Supported Disc Not Available. I first noticed a problem when my DiskWarrior startup disc would not open for a rebuild. I tried the Tiger Install DVD to access the disk utility but nothing happened there either. Nothing mounts. This is distressing since the nearest Apple Store is about 50 miles away. Any ideas anybody? Any other information that might be required to hopefully clear this up I will gladly furnish. Thanks. Jack

I have been having an intermittent problem with my super drive on an iMac G4 (1 GHz, 10.5.8, Pioneer DVR 105). Several months ago, it would not recognize a music CD (Next to Normal). I thought it was a problem with the disk, but I had the same difficulty with a replacement. Those disks worked in two other Macs in the house as well as regular CD and DVD players. Now, it won't read my new copy of Turbo Tax 2009. The drive just whirrs and chugs for 30-45 seconds then ejects the disk. Everything else plays fine (especially DVDs). What's really strange is that I went back to my TurboTax disk from last year (which installed fine then), and it wouldn't read that either. I have repaired permissions, zapped the PRAM (but not reset the PMU), and had the computer shut down dozens of times between tries. It seems something is causing just these disks not to be read correctly. I haven't tried a cleaner, but it seems like this is solely a problem in the drive itself. Any other suggestions?

  • HT2801 USB Super drive not working

I have removed the optical drive from my 2008 (late) macbook and added an SSD to run along side the HDD and increased the RAM. I have a super drive to read CD/DVD's  but i can not get this to operate?

I believe that the Apple USB Super Drive only works with late model Macs that didn't come with an optical drive. Third party usb drives will work ok though.

  • New Super Drive Not Detected!

So I recently had trouble with my DVD drive, it wouldn't boot from any of the CDs I owned (even ones it booted with before). So I went and bought a new DVD Super Drive (model: UJ-857-C Slim) and opened up my laptop and installed it. No problems at all with the physical installation. I put it all back together and cut my laptop back on, and what do ya know? my system profiler doesn't show there to be a burning device, and the disk utility doesn't show a DVD drive. So I went through and reset the PRAM and NVRAM and verified the HD and verified the permissions, everything looked fine, except my Super Drive still didn't show up. I inserted a music CD just to see if it would play it, and now it won't eject that either. (I used an old CD 'cause I figured it wouldn't give it back).
Now I know that with Windows based PCs there's a way to install drivers and detect new drives, is there something I need to do with my Mackbook to have the new drive be detected? Or am I just SOL and need to take it to the apple store and let them deal with it?

Thanks for the input, Rodney! Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure out how to reformat it. Here's exactly how far I get...
1.) Boot up the computer to the OS Install DVD.
2.) Installer asks me what I wish my primary language to be. I select English and hit Continue.
3.) Installer shows OS description and tells me to hit Continue if I want to install. I click Continue.
4.) The license agreement comes up and I hit Continue and then Agree to move forward.
5.) I am asked to select a destination volume for the OSX installation. There are no options to select. The only button I can press is 'Back'. There is an 'Options' button as well, but it is ghosted.
    Any ideas?

  • Super Drive not reading discs...

My eMac is ejecting the majority of dics (both CD's & DVD's) after inserted even the system discs that came with the computer. The discs are not damaged in anyway. Any suggestions??

    1) Buy one of those lens cleaning discs that have the little brush on them...
    2) Open the eMac. Remove the optical drive. Open the optical drive. Clean lens with alcohol swab.
I performed the optical drive swap recently when my drive died... (I tried a disc cleaner - didn't try swabbing the lens directly). I don't "recommend" doing it, cos yes, there is a cathode ray tube inside that could kill you... and I don't want that on my head. :} But if you're used to dealing with such things, it may be an option.
Otherwise... you're looking at selling the eMac, or buying an external optical drive.

  • Imac Super Drive Not Working & Getting Sounds

    Hi,
I have problem in my Imac Superdrive not working and when ever i ON my Mac its getting sounds like some jamed inside,
But inside superdrive nothing disc was there. and the thing i can manage without working superdrive, When ever my mother goes to power saving mode into blackscreen if i have start shacking my mouse to work on it again and again its getting sounds like stucked inside..
Any one please help me to solve the sounds or have any options to disable the superdrive.
Hopefully i will get here any good suggestion and usefull suggestion.
    Thanks in Advance.

The only way to stop the moise is to Physically Remove the drive from the system. Take it out.
There is no way that I know of to Disable the drive from getting power and making the noise while it is still physically installed inside the system.

  • IMac 'Super' drive not reading anything

    Good afternoon all,
Recently my iMac has started to no longer read any CD's or DVD's. I insert the DVD / CD and the disc / drive clicks a little as the disc tries to read and then about 30 seconds to a minute later it is spewed out.
Am I right to assume my drive is dead? That is terrible its not that old a system and isnt used much.
Are there any 'home remedies' I can try to fix this?
If not can anyone tell me what a new drive would cost to buy and get Apple to install? Or are there external drives that would do the job?
Any advice, tips, links or anything would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Andy

Yes, the drive is dead, and since this is a small form factor slot loading drive, most home remedies would be likely to damage the drive further than fix it.
As for getting it replaced... Figure on about $150 (ballpark) for the drive, and then $100 for an hour of labor. Or you could buy an external USB drive for netbooks and just use that. That would be my choice if I were in your situation. Those cost maybe $50 each, so I could buy several externals for the price of getting the one internal installed.

  • Super drive not accepting disk

iMac mid 2010 27in has suddenly stopped accepting disks in the superdrive.  Disk gets pulled in but not caught and spit out about a second later.

try an System Management Controller (SMC) reset.
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Can i use mini cd in super drive

Can I use , play mini cd in the super drive ?

You should not use mini CDs in slot-loading CD/DVD drives which of course includes the super-drive fitted to MacBook Pro laptops, the super-drive fitted to older iMacs, the super-drive fitted to older Mac mini computers and the external USB super-drive.
The super-drive fitted to older Mac Pro computers is a tray loading drive and it would be safe to use a mini CD in it.
Note: For the same reasons you should not use CDs or DVDs with paper stick-on labels in slot-loading drives.

  • Internal super drive cannot burn DVD from iDVD

I using MacBook pro 15" from 2010, when I using iDVD brun my DVD when the process go to multiplexing the disc kick out from super drive cannot complete the burning, but I used another mac to burn is work, I think is my Macbook pro super drive got a problem, so how can I fix the super drive problem, I try to download the super drive framware 3.0 but got the message said the update not for my macbook pro, I buy the new extenal super drive, go the message the super drive not support for my mac, I really need help. please please.

See Bengt Wärleby's post in this topic: Multiplexing Error
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Strange Sony Super Drive

The Sony super drive that came in my Mac Pro started giving me problems. It would not read Disks (CD's or DVD's) that it wrote. The Pioneer DVD drive that I have in the lower bay would read them just fine though. I have a second hard drive installed that I use for Windows Vista with Boot Camp. While I was running Vista today I noticed that all the DVD movies that I made on the Mac worked in the Sony DVD drive while I was in Vista, but could not be read when I was booted up in Mac OS 10.5.5. I have had Sony Super drives in other Mac's too and they all gave me grief. After a while they wouldn't read disks that they wrote. I assumed that Sony drives just were not very good. That is up until now. I pulled the Sony drive from the Mac Pro and pulled a Lite-On drive from a PC that I have and switched them. The Sony drive works just fine in the PC and the Lite-On drive works fine in the Mac Pro. I have come to the conclusion that there was nothing wrong with the Sony drive and there must be something wrong with the drivers supplied with 10.5.5. Has any one else had a problem with their Sony Super Drive not reading disks the it writes and found a way to fix it?

Other than generic IDE drivers in the OS I doubt there are drivers for the drive or any DVD drive.
A decent internal Pioneer drive costs about $40. They can be swapped in and out in 10 minutes. Applecare/Apple Store will take all day.
    Buy a drive.

  • IBook G4 will not recognize Super Drive

There is a DVD stuck in my optical Super Drive. The drive now is no longer recognized in the system profiler either. There is no noise at all coming from the drive on startup or when an eject is attempted. This is a second-hand iBook so unfortunately i don't have any other information as the disc was stuck in the drive on purchase.

If a problem occurs when Applecare is in effect, Apple will honor the warranty until the problem is fixed, even if the Applecare expires in the meantime. A product specialist at Apple told me this.
You need to contact Apple and tell them that the replacement of the hard drive did not solve the problem, and that the hard drive is still not being recognized. It's possible that the new hard drive is bad, but it's also possible that the hard drive cable was not securely plugged into the logic board and that it has worked loose. Or there could even be a logic board problem that is keeping the hard drive from being recognized. But it's Apple's problem to sort out.
    Good luck!
