Super drive will not recognize a 8.5gb 4x DVD-R DL

I have a G4 PowerMac MDD with a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104 with Firmware Revision: 227. I just used the drive to install OSX 10.5 without any problem. I am wanting to burn a 8.5 GB, 4x DVD-R DL through Disc Utilities but the DVD is not recognized. Makes some noises and ejects. From the very little I have come to understand from this forum, I may need to update the Pioneer firmware for the 4x DVD's. I find firmware for Windows on the Pioneer site but, nothing for Mac's. Can anyone advise me on what I need to do? Thanks! Ron

Hi Ron-
Will all DVD+-RW DVR drives work in both a Mac and PC or are they different?
Pretty much. In a Mac, some are OS dependant.
Can you recommend a replacement that won't break the bank?
Yes. The Pioneer DVR-116. Very nice for both Mac and PC. OS 10.4.9+ and 10.5+ work with no problems.

  • DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there.  It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies.  I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive.  Computer is out of warranty.

Hello crollinsphoto1, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.
I'd recommend starting with this document:
Resolving DVD and Blu-ray Movie Problems (Windows 7).
Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)
Let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.

    Hi @Vikingx,
    Thank you for your reply.
I would just like to let you know that I am taking over for Futoji and will do my best to assist you!
I see that reinstalling the software did not help.
Have you done all your Windows updates?
Have you tried Using Automated Troubleshooting (Windows 7)
Have you ran the  HP Support Assistant  to aid with HP updates and help resolve issues.
You did mention that DVD drive is not recognized correctly by Device Manager.  Would you try this please.
    Delete the existing installed driver.
Scan for hardware changes.  This should allow Window to install the default driver.
Here is a link to Troubleshooting Device Drivers (Windows 7, Vista) that may also be of aid.
If you are still having an issue you could do a restore back to when it was functioning.
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7)
The last step would be to do a full recovery back to factory.
Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7)
During the recovery you will have the option to backup your personal files to prevent data loss.  Here is a link to  Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 7)
If the issue should remain, I suggest contacting HP support for assistance. They have the ability to remotely access your system to easily  locate and resolve issues.

  • My USB Super Drive will not Play Red Box DVDs, Why?

Can anyone explain why my USB super drive will not play RedBox DVDs?

What Mac are you using with the USB SuperDrive?
Is this USB SuperDrive a third party drive or Apple's USB SuperDrive?
If this optical drive is Apple's own external USB SuperDrive, this only works with newer Macs that have no built-in optical drive any longer and WILL NOT work with older Macs that came with built-in optical drives.
Is the Red Box DVD a standard DVD or Blu-Ray DVD disc?

  • Super drive does not recognize video DVDs-what wrong?

My iMac G5 running OS X 10.4.8 will not play commercial videos.
When I put any video in the drive, I get the following message:
    "Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer"
and I am given the choice of ingnoring it or ejecting it.
    Here is what the system profiler says about a video in the drive;

I used to be able to play Video DVDs. The hardware suddenly stopped recognizing them. I also have a bootable external disk with 10.4.7. The same problem occurs when running this system. Interestingly, Limewire will not run under the 10.4.8 system but tuns fine under the 10.4.7 system.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong or what I can do to play Video DVDs again?

I am just adding to this post.
I have tried to repair permissions in Disk Utility with no result
I can play video DVDs with VLC and can rip them with Handbrake. No other program will recognize the DVDs

  • Used Bootcamp to install Windows 7. Now, my macbook pro 13 mid 2009 will not boot back into OSX, there is no Bootcamp utilities like there should be anywhere to be found, and the DVD drive will not recognize the OSX install disk that came with my laptop.

Basically all in the title. Also, some additional info: partition was 115 GBs for Windows, 385 or whatever for OSX (I have a 500 GB Harddrive), I have tried restarting multiple times, and the drive will recognize the DVD, but almost as if the DVD is blank, as it asks me to format it or drag files to it, etc.

Hold your "Option" key down while starting your machine.  Continue to hold it down until you are presented with the boot menu which should allow you to select either OS X or Windows (provided you didn't somehow wipe your OS X partition).  When you get into OS X, you can go to System Preferences / Startup Disk.  Here you can select the default startup partition (OS X or Windows)... when you're installing Windows via BootCamp, it gets changed to Windows so when you finish setting up BootCamp, it automatically reboots and launches the Windows installer.  Installing all of the Windows drivers from the OS X DVD should provide you with a Startup Disk option under Windows as well.

  • DVD drive will not recognize blank DVDs after upgrade to Lion.

It finds burned DVD/CDs but not blank ones. Disk utility partially sees blank dvd, gives option to eject it, but will not allow eject it. Finder does not see it at all. have to restart to have it eject. Tried different DVD's (Manufactures and -R / +R, etc). Have followed recommendations on resets and have even reloaded the OS.  This problem started immediately after upgrade from snow lepoard to lion.

Repairing permissions yes. But in my head, if everything is working fine for it, just won't read Blank media, could it be a software thing?
I'll give it a shot in a few hours

  • My optical drive will not recognize cd's....but it will play dvd's.  When i insert an audio cd it spins but eventually spits it out.

My CD/DVD drive will only play DVD's.  When I insert an audio cd it just spins then ejected.  I checked my settings and it should open with Itunes.  I read something about messing with the language but that didn't seem to work.  HELP!!!

Take it to an Apple store or AASP.

  • After Upgrade to 10.5.8 Optical Drive will not Recognize DVD's

    Hello Everyone,
I was hoping that someone would be able to shed light on a problem I recently ran into after upgrading from Leopard 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 and possibly suggest a solution.
I believe there is an issue with the optical drive software. The reason I suspect this is because one evening I was able to watch a DVD without any problems. After completing the upgrade to version 10.5.8 of Leopard last night, the same DVD failed to play. When inserting the disk, the optical drive makes a whirring sound for about a minute then proceeds to spit out the DVD. I've tested this with CD's, which seem to work fine. Other DVD's have the same issue as the first.
Can anyone suggest anything to help sort this issue out?
    Many thanks to everyone.
    Ron

I'm facing the same issues with my MacBook and its "SuperDrive". Right after inserting any media, it spits it out immediately, thus, I'm not able to read nor write any kind of disc. Below are the specs for my "SuperDrive":
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:
    Firmware: KA14
    Connection: ATAPI
    Recording: Yes
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Sim
    Records CD: -R, -RW
    Records DVD: -R, -RW
    Recording: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
I have sent Steve Jobs an email ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]) and posted a feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html
Probably you guys have seen it already, but MacBook Pro owners are having similar issues with their "SuperDrives": http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1918925&start=0&tstart=0

  • DVD stuck in drive, will not recognize anything is inside

I am currently traveling through Mexico and Central America. While in Mexico my friend bought a bootlegged dvd (i know, no bueno) and one night I attempted to watch it in my macbook. It spun and did the bad dvd thing for a while then it stopped spinning and I haven't been able to get it out for a week. My computer almost acts as if it doesn't have a cd drive anymore. I tried rebooting with the eject button held down and then with the mouse button held down. I typed various commands into terminal and finally it said, unmount failed for disk1, and unable to find disk for disk 1. The drive is making no noises anymore but I still can't get the cd out. In the system profiler under disc burning it says no disc burning device is found. Please help me I don't know what to do anymore.

Yes, i tried drutil eject, usr/bin/drutil eject, and a couple others, i also tried all the suggestions from the link that chamar sent (thank you), except the one with the cardboard, but the disc is no longer spinning.

  • MacBook Pro 13 inch will not recognize a burned DVD

Bought this computer in August and last night (October 15) I inserted a burned DVD which the Super Drive will not recognize. What's worse, I can't eject the disk. So it's sitting in the drive doing nothing. Any suggestions on ejecting the disk? Anybody want an almost new MacBook Pro 13?

Launch iTunes, make a one song burn list, and tell it to burn a disk. Your Mac should pop out the old one and ask for a new one. Then quit.
    Does it recognize any DVDs?
Are you giving it away for free?

  • HP Pavilion DV4 DVD's will not recognize on my cd/dvd drive

Im having an issue opeing up dvd's on my drive.  I found this out recently when I tryed to watch captian america on my computer it will not recognize that i have a dvd in my computer however when i put a cd with pictures or music on it it reconizes it and plays the music or shows me the pictures.  Can someone help me?

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive will now play DVDs.
If the drive still doesn’t work correctly, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

    Hi cterry66,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand you would like to reset the user account password on your computer but do not know the original password. If you set up your Apple ID with that user account, you can use that Apple ID to reset your OS X user password. Please use the information provided in the attached article to complete the process.

  • ITunes Will Not Recognize My CD/DVD Drive In My Windows Vista PC.

    All,
I was forced to migrate to a new PC for work. It is running Windows Vista Enterprise. Since receiving the PC, iTunes will not recognize my CD/DVD Drive. I receive the following error message:
"Warning, The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD's and DVD's are missing....." etc.
I have completed the following troubleshooting steps with no success:
    1. Deleted upper and lower filters in the registry per the Microsoft fix from their web site.
    2. Completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes/Quicktime/Etc.
    3. Uninstalled and reinstalled the CD/DVD Drive
    4. Verified that other programs recognize and can burn to my CD/DVD drive. I have Windows Media Player and Roxio Creator Basic installed.
    5. Verified that Windows Vista recognizes my CD/DVD drive.
    6. Installed the GEAR driver recommended on the Apple Support page for this issue.
All of my music in is iTunes and I prefer to burn my CD's via iTunes. I have read that several people are having this issue.
Does anyone have a solution? There has to be a fix out there somewhere.
I can downgrade to XP but it will take an "Act Of Congress" for my corporate IT group to send me the XP downgrade CD.
