Super Duper and USB 2 external HD !!!!

hi guys
I intend to buy an external Firewire HD soon... but we just had another baby and have to save some money...
My question is:
Can I use Super Duper to clone OSX to my USB 2 HD? Even knowing it won't be a bootable driver!
But I believe it's better than nothing to have a copy of my OS in case I have any minor problem and want to go back to a previous configuration... in case an update makes my OS slower or I change my mind about an installed App. I can use the OS copy kept in my USB2 HD.
I know that if a have a major problem I won't be able to boot from my external HD but as I said I just want to make sure I can use it kind of like Windows' System Restore...
Cheers!

Nando:
I'm a little confused. I have two external USB 2.0/Firewire HDs and I use Superduper to clone my Macintosh HD in my iMac to both drives and I CAN boot from either of them. I bought Superduper specifically for cloning my internal drive because right after I got my iMac, the 250GB internal drive died and Apple had to replace it.
Booting from an external HD is great because it has already saved my bacon when Sherlock went nuts and I booted from an External HD and I used Superduper to revert Sherlock back to the last backup, which fixed the problem.
Whenever Apple comes out with an update, I back up my internal HD and then install it. If there is a problem, then I can reboot from an external drive and revert the internal to the last backup. Finally, and best of all, I can boot from an external drive and use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the internal HD without any hassles or version issues.
I purchased a Western Digital 160GB HD and I built another one (if you can call sticking a 300GB HD in a USB 2.0/Firewire external case and screwing it back together building my own) and they both work fine.
As far as price, I bought my external cases at CompUSA for around $60 and I just bought another Maxtor 300GB HD from Amazon for around $139. Drives are very cheap so if you want to build your own, you can save some money that way. Just be careful that if you decide to build your own that you make sure that the ATA I/F is the same on each unit. A case with an PATA I/F won't work with a SATA drive.
Good Luck,
Gerry

  • Does TM back up super duper running on same external drive?

I have a 4TB external drive partitioned in half.  2TB for TM and 2TB for Super Duper  (I know that if the drive goes bad, both backups are gone).  When TM runs, does it backup the Super Duper data from the other partition?  In other words, does TM see the other half of the 4TB drive as something to back up?  If it does, how can I exclude it from doing so?
If I can, I see Super Duper drive (half of the partition) in the TM preferences.  Do I have to click the + to exclude it?  thanks

When TM runs, does it backup the Super Duper data from the other partition?
    No.

  • Super Duper and External Drive.

Have a drive that is a clone of my OS. I have a pretty large iTunes library and still growing ! I'm into music (recording) hence lots of external drives. How do i keep my iTunes library out of my Mac's HD and have everything on the clone? Looked on the iTunes support page on here but not really helpful. Wanna keep the mac virtually empty so she can run like new at all times. Thanks for the help

Hey ! Thanks for the help everyone ! David.Austin.Allen I followed your instructions and went with the option given by iTunes to, create new Library or Choose one. I had previously Consolidated, moved all my files to my Clone external drive. Now when i click on iTunes it read's " Folder containing iTunes Library could not be found please create a new one or choose one! I think i am pretty much set thanks to you! One last question though. After all that. Is my iTunes Library still clogging up space on my macs drive even though iTunes is disabled on my internal drive, btw i did erase my original iTunes Library as the support page on here stated ! Wondering if i answered my own question !>? Or will SuperDuper being that the drive is a clone somehow copy everything back into my internal drive ?

  • AirPort Extreme and USB NTFS External Drive and Canon MP810 printer

The AirPort Extreme works great as a wireless router. And with the additional AirPort Express, I now have a WDS in my house. I can also stream my iTunes downstairs. This is all great, it's working.
    What's not working is:
    1. Adding a USB NTFS-formatted external Maxtor drive to the USB port Extreme.
    2. Able to copy, scan, and use "all" printing functionality of the Canon MP810 USB printer when connected to the USB port of the Extreme. Please I note I can choose File, Print from most applications and it works, but I can't use Canon's My Printer tool to access the printer wirelessly.
I guess I'd like an unofficial confirmation that this is correct. I am a little disappointed that Apple didn't communicate this correctly in any of their specifications.
I will begin looking into the comparable Linksys wireless router, but I have the strange feeling that I will get the same results.
I don't know how Dell is able to do it with it's AIO 966 printer.
    Thanks,
    Frank

    1. Adding a USB NTFS-formatted external Maxtor drive to the USB port Extreme.
Problem arises as OS X can not write to NTFS formatted drives and therefore you need to use HFS+ or FAT32.
    2. Able to copy, scan, and use "all" printing functionality of the Canon MP810 USB printer when connected to the USB port of the Extreme. Please I note I can choose File, Print from most applications and it works, but I can't use Canon's My Printer tool to access the printer wirelessly.
Can I scan using my all-in-one when it is connected to the USB port of an Airport Express or Airport Extreme Base Station?

I guess I'd like an unofficial confirmation that this is correct. I am a little disappointed that Apple didn't communicate this correctly in any of their specifications.
As you can see from this page
    http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/specs.html
    It does state quite clearly
+For shared printing with a USB printer +
If it allowed scanning, I am sure it would have said
+For shared printing and scanning with a USB all-in-one+
    or similar.
If it doesn't explicitly say it will do something I would assume it can't.

  • Time Machine or External Using Super Duper

Apple is going to change the HD on my computer. I know little about Time Machine but I have been backing up my HD using Super Duper and a LaCie external HD. I think it's working out so far. That's what I have done before replacing the HD. So, when the new HD is installed, I can start up using the external and transfer files, i.e., mail, iTunes, Safari, Firefox etc. from the Application file on the external to the Application file on the computer with the new HD without any change in content. Any advantage using Time Machine over the way I intend to do it which should work. Any preferences or none?
I have already posted in a different Topic but on this sight regarding another aspect of this operation.

I generally can get Time Machine to work for a while. It takes way more effort to get it working and to keep it working than you'd expect for a Mac.
The most recent event was when I mounted my new 500 GB Hitachi drive in a new Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini, connected with Firewire 800 to my Mac Mini Server. I formatted the drive, using the 7-pass erase in Disk Utility, with no errors. I used disk utility to verify the file system on the drive before I started using it with Time Machine.
I configure Time Machine to use that new drive, and it starts up, but pukes fairly quickly. I Googled the error messages, and found lots of other people running into the same error.
First off, the disk would not unmount. Had to force unmount it.
Used Disk Utility to Repair the file system. It encountered no errors. So, then I used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory structure on the disk. It found some things that it corrected. Since then, Time Machine has been working on that disk without further errors (overnight).
How many Apple customers are going to want to deal with force unmounts, running disk utility and disk warrior to tickle Time Machine back into working?
These are my log entries from the most recent Time Machine errors:

So far, it has been running ok on that disk since I force unmounted it and used disk warrior to rebuild its directory structure.
While I was visiting my sister-in-law over Christmas, I had to resurrect Time Machine on my old PowerMac dual G5 I gave her. It's backing up to an internal SATA drive that I previously tested quite extensively. I had to use Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory structure on that disk as well to get Time Machine working again.
It seems to me that time machine, or the device drivers it relies on, needs some work.

  • Time Machine and Super Duper

I purchased Super Duper and did a full backup on my Mac Pro (I have 3 hard drives, the main one and 2 backup drives that are mounted on the desktop). Everything worked fine, I did the Super-Duper start-up/complete backup to one of the extra hard drives. The problem is when I run Time Machine it backs up everything including the extra copy of my computer that Super-Duper just created. This just filled up the extra hard drive that I use for Time Machine.
    My question...
    1) Is there a way to have the Super-Duper back-up copy of my computer but then not have it re-backed up by Time Machine? Do I need to remove the hard drive (the hard drive with the Super-Duper copy) from the desktop, and how do I do this... they are internal hard drives and not external hard drives.
    2) What is the best way to undo what I have done and get the space back on my extra hard drive that I am using for time machine?
    Thanks for the help
    Chris

As Neville says, you can exclude the SD drive from future Time Machine backups via TM Preferences > Options.
And you can delete the prior backups of that drive, too. See #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Time Machine in addition to Super Duper

My previous backup external drive died and I just got a replacement. I have always used Super Duper (which is great) to back up my computers so that I have a bootable backup. The question is---does it make any sense to partition the drive so that there is one partition for Super Duper and a second for Time Machine? What benefit would Time Machine add?
    Thanks

Keep in mind that TimeMachine backs up changes every hour, keeps daily backups for a month and weekly backups thereafter. At work my backup set is about 125GB and I began backing up to the current TM drive in August. The TM backup is now 244GB. Prior to upgrading to 10.6 my home computer's TM backup was nearly 3 times the size of the backup set. To me, the value of TM is the redundancy and its value is diminished when older backups have to be erased to make room for a new backup set. For this reason I recommend that a TM drive be no less than twice the size of the backup set and closer to three times the size. This is in addition to the SD! clone I keep.
If your external drive is large enough then yes, it is fine to partition it. If it isn't, use one method or the other and/or purchase a second backup drive. Also, keep in mind that SD! can be set to perform scheduled backups and it can also keep archives (copies of files that were changed since the last backup).

  • Using Migration Assistant with Time Machine or Super Duper data

Can I use Migration Assistant with a Time Machine or Super Duper backup on an external drive instead of the original computer? I'm thinking of upgrading my Mini to a new one but only have one monitor. Not in the mood to hunt down an old monitor & buy adapters, etc. If I can, are there any tradeoffs using a backup instead of the original Mini? And is TM or SD preferable for this purpose? The current Mini runs 10.6 SL.

    yes to both.

  • Super Duper Mess

I bought a copy of Super Duper (the back up utility) and after I ran it(backed up to a La Cie HD) my iMac G5 (10.4) started giving me fits- everything was slow and locking up like crazy. I unhooked the external hard drive, trashed Super Duper and everything made nice again. What in the world is going on??

The original poster may want to consider checking the makers of his drives for driver updates.
Any SuperDuper questions should be addressed on their forums.
Just to clarify, a clone is a exact duplicate of a drive usually done on a timetable set by the user using software. It offers hardware and software corruption protection.
A mirror is a exact duplicate of a drive as well, but it done using either Disk Utility or other RAID software/hardware and any data is written to both drives instantly, offering only hardware protection. A mirror is good for vital one time data captures, like if ET called. It doesn't make a good method to backup a boot drive as you loose the benefit of time.
I don't particuarly like SuperDuper, the first version with it's registration traps and "phoning home" (taking my admin password?) didn't install a whole lot of confidence in me. I didn't like the interface either.
I switched to Deja Vu instead and found the System Preference Pane approach more to my liking. It runs so seemlessly in the background even over a network, auto-cloning and auto backups.
If your hard on the dollars, donationware Carbon Copy Cloner is a excellent "one trick pony" choice and their forums are most helpful.

  • Slow Cloning with Super Duper

I'm trying to clone my hard drive to an external firewire hard disk (G-Drive Q 500GB) using Super Duper and the download seems to go along nicely until about 80% of the files are evaluated and copied. Then, the process just stops after about 1.5 hrs. with the elapsed time counter clicking away. Does this indicate some problem with my hard drive or am I doing something wrong in setting up the cloning procedure?
I need to get this clone before I convert to OS 10.5.
    Thanks

It could be a problem with a certain file that may be corrupted or extremely large on your drive, especially if the clone fails in the same place, multiple times.
With SuperDuper! running you can do a Command +L to view the log. It may have some information that might help you find where the process is going wrong.

  • My iphone external hard drive keeps disconnecting so it tells me I disconnected improperly. I have changed electric cord directly to outlet and usb also direct, and it still happens.

I store ALL my photos (400 events) on an external 1T hard drive. The hard drive keeps disconnecting so it get a msg telling me I disconnected improperly basically which is a serious no no. I then have to re-start. I have tried connecting directly to the wall outlet, to a super duper surge protector and also have connected the usb (was on a usb port) directly to the computer. But it continues to happen a total nusance. What do I do?

I would first contact  Seagate's tech support for a possible solution. If that doesn't prove successful then I would try a different product or consider building your own.
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • .trash and super duper

This will be confusing but I will appreciate any advice. The apple genius was not sure he knew the answer so maybe someone here knows what I should do.
I'm not sure it matters how this happened but it started with a failing hard drive and superduper. It's a long story but I ended up with 152 gb of files (all user files, all photos) duplicated on my external drive. I didn't realize this for awhile but when I did, I put all all the duplicates in the trash. Even though .trash files are hidden, they take up space on my external drive plus on my back up drive. I am afraid to empty the trash because I don't understand where the files really are or where the trash is since the only place I see a trash can is in the dock, not on my external drives. I use super duper to clone my mac hd as well as my external drive. I discovered what had happened when I checked the activity monitor and saw that my drives had suddenly lost all that space. Since I can't easily undo emptying the trash and can't experiment with one file, I am really afraid that I can create havoc with the system. Super Duper told me it's a bad idea to keep a lot of files in the trash. I sense that I just don't know enough about this to decide what to do. any help much appreciated.
    Thanks.

you can see the hidden trash files. They began with a .Trash
slotless is an external flash drive.

The Touch Copy third party software for PC's is the way to go it seems and although the demo is free, if you have over 100 songs then it costs £15 to buy the software which seems not a lot to pay for peace of mind. and restoring your iTunes library back to how it was.

  • Is there a way to disable the Facetime camera and use an external USB webcam for browser based webchat?

Is it possible to disable the Facetime camera and use an external webcam as a default? So that when you access browser based applications that require a webcam it doesnt default to the Facetime camera but uses the USB webcam instead?
    Cheers.

    (1) You don't need to "disable" anything to select among cameras connected to your Mac.
For all cameras you access via browser based applications (cameras connect via Flash browser plugins), control-click on an open video window in your browser page and adjust the camera settings to select between a connected USB and Firewire video camera.  Specific instructions are here:
       http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help04.html
If you don't see a choices of cameras in the Flash settings, your Mac is only recognizing one camera.  Verify that your external cam is Mac-compatible and properly connected.
Your choice is stored in preferences so the same camera will activate on the next browser page until you change it.
    (2) BTW, a current (Feb 2013) discussion of how to select among connected Mac cameras for a few more apps is available here:  http://discussions.apple.com/message/21158673#21158673
