Super Puzzler - stump the chumps

OK.
I've got a good one here. I've had to go through two Apple Care people and wound up being transfered to a product specialist only to be told what I have is a "mystery."
Wanna help me solve it? here's the situation:
I bought an TV and an Airport Extreme 802.11n base station in order to take advantage of the new features that will be made available to TV via software update some time in the upcoming weeks. WooHoo!
At home, I have a MacBook Pro Core Duo, and an iBook both with airport cards and an Airport Express base station for the wireless network. The Express was plugged into the PC port on the back of my Vonage VoiP modem which was connected to my cable modem which was connected to the coax cable which goes into the wall. Up until this point, everything worked like a champ.
To set up my TV and new AEBSn, I left the Cable Modem and VoiP modem connected just the way they were mainly because that's the way Vonage told me I had to have them connected. I Got the TV up and running just fine by plugging it into the wall and into the HDMI port in the back of my TV. The AEBSn wasn't as smooth. For some reason, I was not able to configure it to use a shared IP address. The only way it would let me configure it was to have it be on bridge mode. The problem with that is that only one device can be using the IP at a time with caused all kinds of problems with internet browsing and especially syncing to the TV. It took about 24 hours to sync only 50GB of content. The first thing I thought of was that maybe it was the Vonage box that was causing the problem so I tried just plugging the AEBSn into the cable modem and leaving the the Vonage box out of the equation all together. I should mention that each time I make these changes I power everything off in order and wait a few minutes between and power back on in reverse order waiting till all lights are steady and green.
SO...
With the Vonage box gone, the network was back up and TV Syncing was WAY faster. BUT I was no longer able to connect to the internet. So I decided to finally contatct Apple Care and they had me do various thing s like connect my MBP directly in to the cable modem using ethernet (it connected to the internet just fine), manually configure the internet settings on the AEBSn instead of using DHCP, resetting, rebooting, so on and so forth.
So here is the mystery. I AM getting and IP address from Comcast through the modem. But it doesn't let me connect to the internet if I am using the AEBSn. I CAN get on the internet if I put the Vonage box back between the cable modem and the AEBSn and configure to be in bridge mode.
Hmmmmm
The Product specialist told me he had no idea why this was happening. the only other thing he could suggest to me was to unplug everything and to even unplug the cable modem from the cable and to leave it all unplugged over night and then to plug it all back in in a certain order in the morning and cross my fingers. If that doesn't work, I should try taking the AEBSn to the Genius bar or something. One thing he suspects is that Comcast doesn't want me using a router (which the airport is) so they are somehow blocking my IP address when the AEBSn is plugged in.
Any ideas?

I just powered everything back up after leaving it all unplugged overnight and still no internet connection. I switched the whole set up back to where the VoiP modem is in between the AEBS and the cable modem and changed connection sharing to bridge mode just so I could at least get online. But of course That's not the setup I want because TV is very slow this way and so is my internet connection when TV is syncing.
Do you know of any of the threads in this forum that you mentioned where the Comcast customer was able to resolve this issue using a method other than unplugging everything and leaving the modem off overnight?
It's kinda bumming me out.
I guess I'll try again with Apple Care.

  • WSUS vs SCCM SUP - What is the point of changing? Pros and Cons of both

    Hi,
I have been using WSUS forever and have just made a very painful change over to SCCM 2012 SUP. In a room full of experienced WSUS users and facing a handover of SCCM SUP, I really need to have this question answered - What, if any, are the advantages of
SCCM2012 SUP over WSUS. It's certainly not ease of use, ease of implementation or understandability.
Even if i accept that yes, they are two different things now and i shouldn't think of SCCM as being like WSUS, I still have to compare and contrast, honestly, what they do and how they do it
WSUS is ridiculously easy in comparison to SUP. With WSUS, I install it, create some GPOs and assign to OUs. I create security groups and add the servers in scope to to thoise groups and those security groups to the policy. I have different groups set up
to keep separation of DCs and APP servers and SQL and SCCM and Antivirus servers and workstations
If needs be i have a text list of all my servers/workstations and can individually target using PSEXEC to run wuauclt on any number of clients. It works great and is easily understandable
Now, enter SCCM 2010 and SUP.
The first thing i HAD to know was the last thing i learned. And not from Microsoft. That is that there is really only one method now, imposed by limitations on Software Update Groups and Deployment packages. You can only create a package of 1000 or less updates
This means chopping up your historic updates and having them deployed as a separate strategy from your newer updates cycles
Secondly, every month from now on you will need to create and sort your updates into a meaningful Update Group and Deployment package - even if you set up an Automatic Deployment rule, you still need to manually create your Update Groups
You can only have one deployment package per update group and will need one software update group per "type" of install (available or Required) AND you will need one software update group and deployment package PER COLLECTION!
To make this work as simply as possible, it will mean having two collections Available and Required (for example)
Each collection will have a SUG associated with it (each with a limit of 1000 updates remember). Each group of circa 1000 updates takes about 2+ hours to compile and you will have a minimum of 5 groups per collection to get up to October 2014
After this your ADRs should now do it all for you but lack the ability to create update groups so you have to do this manually every month beforehand. Whew!!
Thirdly, in the background, WSUS still downloads metadata. In SCCM you should be pointing every update group manually to this folder. Same with Deployment packages and ADRs. Why is this not built-in - intuitive? These are then copied and downloaded as full
packages into their respectively (manually) created source folders
Now, when updates expire or are superseded, you have to manually replace them from each SUG
And also quite a big thing i havent heard anyone else comment on, is the fact that these updates are now NOT shown in the Windows Update feature - they now appear in the Software Center - so now the Servers i sent "Available" updates have to be
logged onto and manually installed - instead of being able to individually target them like i did with PSEXEC and wuauclt
And logging?? There are at least 100 different logs to look at using the Trace Log Tool. It's a full time job just figuring out what logs to look at to resolve any problems
This is, in my opinion, a really poor effort and the documentaion is wildly inconsistent across many forums.
Some kind of standard document is needed. And i say this after having followed Microsoft's own documentation and using technet forums
I, for one, just need one BIG question answered for now - how do i remove the SCCM SUP client and revert back to wuauclt on all my clients - if i remove SUP from SCCM will it remove the client from the clients?

    HI Jason,
I have spent a long time trying to get this to work. My requirements are to have WSUS deploy updates automatically with as little intervention as possible and to be able to explain and show the process to others who will administer the system long after
    I've gone
The reason I still have to think of things in the WSUS way is that I have a broken update infrastructure that doesn't do what my requirements are. So I now currently need to log into all my "Available " Servers to update them manually instead of
being able to remotely execute the updates. I'll look at the SDK but this is the first time I've heard of it
From the top - yes I agree that's a typo it's Update Goups that can only have 1000 updates. Do you agree that this causes a problem for this scenario? Updates since before 2013 amount to several thousand and so I have to break these up into groups of 1000
    - one each for Available and Required groups. That means 8 groups straight away
Having to cater for these historic updates means painfully waiting 2 hours or so for each package to be created. I've done this already and its not pretty but its essential (unless I'm doing it wrong but I am following TechNet forums)
My ADRs will absolutely not create the Update Groups and the docs I have read also say that this is a manual monthly process - Create a Group every month and then use an ADR to use that group - is that not correct?
Update groups - you are mixing my words up and saying the same thing in a different way - "Update groups can absolutely have multiple deployments targeted to different collections" change the "can" for a "must" and you see my
problem. You cannot create a single Update Group, package it up and the deploy it to both Available and Required groups. You need two update groups for this. One for available and one for Required.
Metadata - OK then what is it that WSUS downloads to E:\WSUS\WsusContent\...  ? And why is this to be set as the download location for any Update Group, Deployment Package or ADR?? I have to create  or select a deployment package which is another
manually created folder under "sources" for which the download location is set to my WSUS folder. This doesn't work unless I set my download location to Microsoft. But WSUS should already have synced in the background to WsusContent so why would
I want to download from Microsoft. And I only want to actually download the "approved" packages. So as far as I'm aware the WSUS\WsusContent folder only contains metadata which is not downloaded until required. Am I wrong? What/who/how downloads
    the binaries and when?
Lastly, What doesn't make sense? The goal used to be automation. If and when I needed to, I used to be able to manually intervene for single or multiple devices using PSEXEC to run wuauclt. With SCCM I can see for example, 2x non compliant devices just now.
In the old days I would just psexec onto them and run wuauclt. In SCCM I err... Hmmm.. what? What do I do? Will look at the SDK
Just one other thing - is there no way at all to continue to use the Windows UPdate control panel and have it show the same available updates as Software Centre? Why can SCCM not just work like Windows Update does? If I run Windows Update on any server it
says up do date but if go to Microsoft to check it always comes back with updates
I just want my internal SCCM SUP to work the same way Microsoft updates works for an internet connected computer. Completely Automatic. No intervention. My group of Availabel servers I would like to be able to remotely and individually install from either
a central console or a script. Again, I will look at the SDK for this
Thanks for your reply and advice. I'll give it one more week. ;-)

  • Not hard to stump the iTunes Store

I found the perfect way to stump the iTunes Store, and I found a design flaw in the process...
I tried to look up a popular country/pop music song from 1981: "Somebody's Knockin'" by John Marshall.
To quote the first verse of the song...
"Somebody's knockin... should I let him in,
Lord it's the devil... would you look at him
I've heard about him but I never dreamed,
he'd have blue eyes and blue jeans..."
I can find lyrics for this on the web (apparently, it's popular in square-dancing circles to this day) but not on iTunes. When I tried looking it up on the iTunes Store, it listed a bunch of unrelated artists, including a Jazz artist by the same name.
There wasn't a clear avenue to provide feedback to Apple, either.

    Hi,
You're right, it is Terri Gibbs. And the live version sounds terrible! (from the short preview). Here is the link I found to request artists/provide feedback, etc:

    Hope that helps.

    Hi, JoseN33.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try the steps in the first article below and see if that resolves your data issue.  However, with some carriers settings need to be manually entered in order to access their cellular data network.  The second article will walk you through that process.

  • Overwriting a method of a super class in the subclass ???

    Hi,
can somebody tell me whether it's possible to add a new implementation of a method in the sub class which is inherited from a super class?
I want to model my program in that way:
    1. I define a super class with some implemented methods.
    2. This class should be inherited in a sub class. One method should be used as it was implemented in the super class but another method should be overwritten in the subclass.
I know this concept from Java but I couldn't find a way how to do it in ABAP
    Many thanks for any help!
    Best regards,
    Birgit

    hi,
    yeas you can do it,
Subclass can re-implement  the inherited public and protected methods from superclass.Class C1 contains method METH1(public) and METH2(protected), both of which are modified and re-implemented in  its subclass C2.also you can have ur own methods in subclass.Objects are created out of both classes and the method METH1 for both objects are called.
Output of the program demonstrates different behaviour for method METH1 of class C1 and C2.
    This demonstrates the theme.

First, you should be using sudo instead of su. Second, the password won't appear in the Terminal while being typed, not even as bullets.

  • Impact of reinstalling the SUP role at the Central server

    Hi Experts
    Env: 1 Central Server
    15 Primary servers
    1 WSUS Server
Multiple Active update sources (all primary servers)
We have identified an issue with multiple WSUS update sources in the database. This is from a previous WSUS installation where in the stale entries still prevail in the database. We have determined to delete the inactive update source from the db and reinstall
the SUP role alone. Apart from redoing the updates classification and custom site settings what impact is this going to have in the environment. e.g. on the old update lists, DMs, CIs. Am I going to lose all of that as well?
Looking forward to a response :)

    Thanks Jason.
Would I have to reinstall the WSUS server again?  I am indeed testing this on my lab, and my DMs and U/Ls were all in place after uninstalling the SUP role and on reinstalling I can see entries in my wsyncmgr.log such as:
"Syncronizing sms database with wsus server"
    "Synchronizing update
"Incrementing CI version to '#' which I believe is pretty standard.
and I was following the blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/george_bethanis/archive/2013/01/31/confmgr2007-security-updates-cannot-be-downloaded-on-a-win2008-server-with-error-on-wuahandler-log-failed-to-add-update-source-for-wuagent-of-type-and-id-error-0x80040694.aspx
It nowhere said, we would have to reinstall the entire WSUS server!!
    Kindly clarify.. </guid>

  • How call the constructor of the super type in the sub type?

    Hi, everybody:
There are two type as belowing code:
CREATE TYEP super_t AS OBJECT (
    a NUMBER(7,1),
    b NUMBER(7,1),
    CONSTRUCTOR FUNCTION super_t
(a IN NUMBER:=null, b IN NUMBER:=null) RETURN SELF AS RESULT
    ) NOT FINAL;
    CREATE TYEP sub_t UNDER super_t (
CONSTRUCTOR FUNCTION sub_t RETURN SELF AS RESULT
Because super_t has the constructor that can pass 0 to two parameters, does the constructor of the sub_t can call the constructor of the super_t to create the instance of the sub_t?
    If can, how call?
If not, need to rewrite the code as the constructor of the super_t in the constructor of the sub_t?
    Thank you very much!

No the supertype constructor is not automatically called (that should have been trivial for you to prove to yourself). Unfortunately, you can't call it from the subtype either (there is functionality like Java's 'super'). You could define a named method in the supertype that does the initialization and call that in both the constructors however.

    Hi Chris,
The gig ports on the standby supervisor are absolutely functional, and the converse is true in the event of a switchover.
    Documented here:
