SUper simple Q: - keyboard

I have a new imac with the small keyboard. How do I use the F11 key to expose the desktop like the older versions. My keyboard uses the f11 key for sound. I tired to hold down the cntrl key and F11 that didn't work either.
Thanks

The fn key acts as a control key to activate the icons (sound, monitor etc) printed on the keys. If you don't use the fn key,F12 is Dashboard,F11 is Desktop, F9 shows all open windows etc,etc, and you can program the F keys as you wish. You will find a list of the default functions in System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts.

  • Probably super simple...ACL/VLANs

    I have a VLAN 6 that is dedicated to a Partner organization (they share our bandwidth and schedule conference rooms with our Exchange).
    Question is how do I configure ACLs to direct ALL traffic to and from Partner, exception of accessing our Outlook Web Access and DNS servers in VLAN 1, and our websites in VLAN 2 ?
    This is probably super simple but I keep ending up with traffic going where I don't want it to.  Thanks so much...
    (And if anything else seems wacky about this setup, blame the last IT guy)

    What is the platform you are using??? ASA, router??

    I'm looking for some super simple flash game tutorials that students can complete in about an hour.  I don't want a lot of actionscript, but some is necessary and that's fine.  Drop any links you may know of or any book titles.  I don't mind buying a book if it is what I'm looking for.  Flash CS5

  • Questions on making a super simple dvd

    I have a few (probably simple!) questions about making a dvd with iDVD. I made the movie in iMovie using the computer's camera and imported it into iDVD no problems. 1st question - how can I put track markings in? 2nd question - I don't want any fancy themes or anything, just a simple black page at the beginning with a title, or even nothing at all, just straight into the movie. How can I do this? 3rd question - I recorded it with an external mic, but the sound is quite soft. I increased it to 150% in iMovie (any more than that and it started to have an electronic kind of buzz); can I increase it anymore in iDVD?
    Thanks for your help!

    ad 1) in iM, click on 'help', type 'chapter markers'
    ad 2) switch to Structure View in iDVD and drag movie into the Autostart Box
    you have about 4.5 options to create a non-themed DVD, read advice on my website:
    http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/nothemedvd
    and, by standards, a DVD HAS to have a menu.. if someone pushes the 'Menu' button on the remote, the disk HAS to offer some.. any.. content..-
    ad 3) no, iDVD is no editor... 'share to Mediabrowser' in iM, launch Garageband, open project from Media Browser and try to 'push' volume in the audio processor of iLife.. share again, to get audio changes in iM ..

  • Tiny freeware, super-simple app to lock the keyboa...

    Hi there,
    I would like to assign the keyboard-lock function to my left shortcut but the function is not available in the list proposed. I supposed if I could install a tiny application that would do nothing more than lokcing the keybord, I could then assign that app to the shortcut.
    Any clue where I can find this? I saw a post with the code for diong it, but I am not a developer.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I have a Nokia E71.
    I actually installed a great application named Smart Settings which does what I need plus much more:
    - programmable lock/unlock key sequence
    - start menu (any apps, contacts, etc... including "lock keyboard")
    - other stuff
    By putting this app on my left shortcut, locking is now just two presses of the main key and bingo. The Smart Setting application also sets itself on the right menu key which is very convenient.
    Just miss to be able to list specific profiles in the list (like I could with my old Nokia -- specific profiles in the shortcut list)

  • SUPER SIMPLE DUMB Question about hard-wired desktop mac and wifi for iPhone

    Sorry if this has been already answered a million times. I have a desktop mac with a cable modem ethernet internet connection. I want to leave this hard-wired and setup a wifi network for a laptop or iPhone. What's the cheapest easiest way to do this?? I've never done anything wireless before.

    Could I just somehow split the feed from the the cable modem or ethernet cable and route part of it into an AirPort express??
    Unfortunately, no. This would create "confusion" for the modem as it is only expecting a single device to be connected to it. To be able to support both wired & wireless clients, you would need an Internet router with a built-in Ethernet switch, like the AirPort Extreme Base Station. If cost is an issue, you do NOT have to use an Apple router. There are a number of other vendors, like Belkin, D-Link, Linksys, & Netgear, to name a few, that offer similar models.

  • Other templates? SUPER simple??

    Does anyone know if there are additional templates for iWeb available to download somewhere?
    It drives me crazy they didn't make one that was COMPLETELY stripped down. Even the WHITE and BLACK one have the cheesy, immediately identifiable as iWeb, image cast shadow that I don't want.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • My super simple ip checking script

    i have a small home network with a PC running arch that acts as a NAT router; in the near future i am planning on setting up VPN access on this arch box. i would assume that it is imperative to know the external IP address of the router in order to connect. my ISP is comcast (cable) and they seem to be rather active in changing my DHCP'd address i get from them (in the past 6 months i have had 3 different ones). so i wrote this bash script that runs in the background and monitors the IP of the external interface. its pretty self explanatory; the mails to "vtext.com" are so i can have it texted to me. pointers would be welcome. i am not particularly a programmer, much more just an admin. the awk stuff seems messy, like there should be an easier way to isolate strings than that.... but idk. i run it
    #!/bin/bash
    # IP CHECK 2.0 (file name/path: /etc/scripts/ipcheck)
    # runs in the background and
    # requires sleep, mailx & ifconfig
    # assumes external interface named "eth0"
    # current ip output file path - single-line file containing current address (needs to be writable)
    OPATH="/var/ipcheck/currentip"
    # Amount of seconds to wait between checks
    WAITSECS=300 # 5 mins
    # Read previous IP from specified $OPATH file, if it's there
    if [ -f "$OPATH" ]; then
    OLDIP=`cat $OPATH`;
    fi
    # Begin main program loop
    while :
    do
    # retrieve new ip using ifconfig
    NEWIP=`/sbin/ifconfig eth0 | awk 'BEGIN{FS="inet ";RS=" netmask"}/</{print $2}' | tr -d '\\n' | tr -d ' '`
    # print whatever was awk'd and the current date/time to tty11
    echo "========= $NEWIP -- `date`" >> /dev/tty11
    # if a different NEW IP is detected AND it isn't a null value, then do the following:
    # * write the new address out to the OPATH file, replacing the previous value
    # * e-mail the new address to my phone via vtext.com
    # * e-mail both the old and new addresses to my main e-mail account
    # * reset the $OLDIP value as the new one
    if [[ "$OLDIP" != "$NEWIP" && "$NEWIP" != "" ]]; then
    echo $NEWIP > $OPATH
    echo "======= New Address - Old IP: $OLDIP ---- New IP: $NEWIP" >> /dev/tty12
    echo "New IP: $NEWIP" | /usr/bin/mailx [email protected]
    echo "Old IP: $OLDIP" | /usr/bin/mailx -s "New IP: $NEWIP" [email protected]
    OLDIP=$NEWIP

    This can't possibly work as is... The assignment in the first line happens in a subshell. It's going to be blank in the rest of the script.
    Okay I admit, I just wrote that without testing it

    The 2nd line can be changed for this:

    Or

    If the script isn't to be run in background then may be you can keep the while loop in background, and use read to get a response,e.g. if it is "n" then terminate the while loop and restart with array index increased by 1
    But if you'd like to run it in the background, you can use trapping of signals may be

  • Simple Bash/keyboard (key mapping) question

    If I log in at a virtual console, the home key moves the cursor to the start of the line, as root, or as a user.  If I'm in WindowMaker, and I open an Eterm, home key moves the cursor to the start of the line, just like in the VC, however, if I SU to root, the home key gives me a ~ at the current cursor position.
    Where should I be looking to fix this, besides 45 minutes with Google?
    Thank you for any help, ideas, etc...

    Found the problem:
    Some package install added this to my .bashrc
    test -n "$DISPLAY" && export TERM=xterm-color
    Bug?  Probably not, but annoying that the assumption is made that I am running xterm.
    The fix was easy, delete the line, as I've been using a custom .bashrc that, among other things, handles TERM exporting properly.

  • Super Simple Internal HD Question

    I have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerMac G5, and I'm running out of space on my 160 GB internal Maxtor hard drive. I found this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Maxtor/7L300S0/ which is the size I want. I just want to know, will this fit in the second hard drive slot? Also, is this a good price? Ok, so that was two questions... I lied.
    -Seth

    At $149 that price is high. You can get the newer faster Maxline III for $125 plus shipping here:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144032
    The Maxtor MaxLine III 7V300F0 300GB is 10% faster than the previous model. If you want a smokin deal on the old model look at this deal:
    Maxtor 300GB 16MB SATA-150 & Cintre SATA Enc. $69.99 A/R
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=18204 18&sku=R301-1063
    You get the previous Maxtor 300GB that is still faster than the other drives plus an external SATA/USB 2.0 enclosure thrown in. There is a $60 mail in rebate to deal with and $13 in shipping but this is the best deal I have seen on a Maxtor 300GB. And yes you can put the drive inside your G5 and use the case for another drive.
    If I did not already have 8 Maxtor 300GB drives, I would be buying on this deal too!
