Super SLOOOOW file transfer from MacBook Pro Retina to Time Capsule over WiFi - why?

So I have been having a search around and it seems like the advice for folks complaining about ludicrously slow wifi transfers from their Mac to their Time Capsule is... to do it wired.
As you may know, the MacBook Pro Retina does not have a cable Ethernet port. So I have to buy a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adaptor (and a cable if I don't already have one) just to perform this basic task? Seems hard to believe.
MacBook wifi is showing as connected via 802.11n to the Time Capsule and the link speed is showing 217 Mbps in Network Utility.
So why is it so slow?

Thank you, LaPastenague - very complete answer!
How is the old NAS connected to the TC?
What actual speed are you getting?
It is important that when you select an option you stop other options from interferring.. ie.. turn off wireless when you do ethernet.
First, I had the NAS connected to the laptop (Dell XPS M1710, Win7 - (yeah, I know, but it does the job, still)) via USB, which generated about 900KB/S r/w speed,
then I tried connecting it via LAN to TC, but didn't succeed in getting TC recognize the drive,
lastly, I connected it via the USB port directly to the TC, and got ~900KB/S r/w speeds again.
In all scenarios, the laptop was connected via LAN as well (TC's WiFi was not disabled, though).
Then I read the above thread and tried finding DHCP settings. Found them in the "internet settings" in the airport utility, but not in the "dive settings", so I didn't know what to change there.
Strangely, the only thing that I changed was the TC-name, taking away a hyphen and a space (from "myname's TC" to "mynamesTC"), which resulted in faster r/w speeds, going from the 900KB/S to 1.5MB/S (still not what I expected).
Also that any copying of files will be a loop, old NAS--Computer.. Computer--TC
Got it. Tried to provide a faster connection by directly connecting old NAS to TC via USB, but makes sense.
Each connection is just as impportant as the other. Plus you can see the computer must handle every packet in a double hop tx, rx tx rx for each one. So using gigabit all the way is vital.
Will try again connecting old NAS to TC via GB-LAN, and have it recognize it, and provide and update here.
This is best done in full isolation from internet.. just setup so you can do the copy overnight.
I was planning on doing several actions of moving files in a session of re-organizing, and am not really keen on waiting 4-6hrs between each step. The old NAS shall host all videos later, as it is recognized by the PS3 when connected via USB, while the TC shall host all photos and music, which I am rather accessing from the laptop's itunes.
And also to realise lots of very small files can copy extremely slowly.. no matter how fast the connections are.. it is heaps of small files that cause copying to take forever because files are written to the disk and then file allocation tables are filled in for every one. It is why a backup is much faster as files are compressed into single large file. Or like TM using 8KB bands where the file ends are handled differently to normal disk.
That will have added to the slow-ness of the session last night, as I was copying 25GB of photos which took 6hrs (***). So that would have been faster if I compressed them to .zip before moving? (not because it reduces size, as it barely does, but becuase it puts many small files into one big one?)
Just moved a 164MB vid from laptop to old NAS (which is still connected to TCs USB port, while laptop to TC via WiFi): result: 1minute40secs @ 1.70MB/S.
Then moved same vis from laptop to TC: 1minute55secs @ 1.80MB/S (gaining write speed slower that old NAS, therefore taking longer despite higher final speed).
So, is there any further improvement / setting that I could change (DHCP / NAT) to get to higher r/w speeds, like the 6.75MB/S quoted above?
Thank you again! MFP

  • File transfer from MacBook Pro into external hard drive

I can't copy files from the MacBook into an external hard drive.
In the 'Get Info' section, it says read-only. However, the hard drive have just been recently bought.
I had the same problem with our previous hard drive. Although the previous hard drive was 'read-only' I was able to copy and paste files in our old HP laptop.
What can I do in order to copy and paste files from the MacBook into the hard drive?
    Hard drive = Toshiba
    Capacity = 1TB

In my last paragraph, I said
"Note that Windows PCs cannot write natively to an HFS drive, so if you need to exchange files between Mac and PC, we need to talk about different options."
Windows cannot read Mac Extended (HFS) formatted drives; the Mac cannot write to Windows (NTFS) formatted drives.
The only formats fully compatible between Mac and PC are FAT32 (largely deprecated) and exFAT. If you need full read-write compatibility between Windows and Mac, and you can erase the drive (ie, it's a new drive or you have confirmed backups), reformat to exFAT using Disk Utility.
If you have a drive with files on it and you cannot erase them at the moment:
    - if the drive is formatted for the Mac, you can purchase MacDrive for the PC
    - if the drive is formatted for Windows (NTFS), you can purchase Paragon NTFS for the Mac.

  • How to backup MacBook Pro without AirPort Time Capsule or External hard drive

How to backup MacBook Pro without AirPort Time Capsule or External hard drive

This is crude but if you need a work around, just plug the USB drive directly into the iMac.. copy the files to it.. then plug it into the TC.
You also do not need to use the TC as an intermediary between your iMac and MBP.. just turn on sharing in the computer.. so you can directly copy files from one to the other.. Macs have public access directory preconfigured for each user account.
As far as mounting the TC..
In finder use Go, Connect to server.. and type.
    AFP://TCname or TCipaddress
Where TCname is the actual name of the TC.. I strongly recommend you follow SMB network rules.. ie if your TC has a name like
    Fred Blog's Time Capsule 2445566.
It is too long.. it has spaces and it has non-alphanumeric characters.
    Shorten it to FredTC
No spaces no characters that are NOT alphanumeric.
TCIPaddress is simply the standard IP.
You can also use CIFS://TCname which according to the article forces the connection back to SMB1 rather than SMB2 which as usual is broken.
But I would definitely use AFP if possible. I cannot understand the decision to move to SMB as standard.

  • I just got a new MacBook Air -- Moving data over from the Time Capsule over WiFi??

I just bought a new MacBook Air because my MacBook Pro 2008 died completely. I own a Time Capsule and it backed up regularly. I'd like to just move over all my data to my new 256GB MacBook Air, but it doesn't seem to be recognizing the Time Capsule over WiFi? I had the Time Capsule set to backup over Ethernet. Does this mean I can only access my files vs. Ethernet? Does that mean I need a USB to Ethernet adapter?

Backing up other Ethernet doesn't prevent access via Wi-Fi.
If the Time Capsule creating a wireless network?  If not, you'll need to configure it to do so in order to allow the MBA to connect to it.  If it does, can you connect the MBA to the Time Capsule's network?
Depending on the amount of data you want to transfer, using a USB-to-Ethernet adapter would help things run faster.

  • MacBook Pro cannot locate Time Capsule on Verizon Wireless Network

Here's what I have: both my MacBook Pro and my Time Capsule are connected to the same wireless network. (I used the "join an existing wireless network" on the Time Capsule.) But when I go to back up, it says the disk is unavailable. And when I open the Airport Utility, I don't see my Time Capsule. Any ideas?

    Welcome to the discussions!
It can be a tricky proposition to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to "join" another wireless network because the settings on the TC and network must match exactly.
Try temporarily connecting an ethernet cable from your computer to the one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC to see if that will allow AirPort Utility to "see" the TC.
If this does not work after a few tries, you'll need to "hard reset" the TC by holding in the reset button until the amber light blinks more quickly. Keep holding a few more seconds and then release.
Open AirPort Utility up and it should find the TC. Try the following setup:
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab below the icons to assign a name, device password and adjust Time Zone settings, etc.
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network. If you don't see this choice, hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the selection box
Wireless Network Name = Exact name of your Verizon wireless network
Wireless Security = Exact same setting that your Verizon router is using. This is where almost all "join" errors occur because the settings don't match exactly. Even when they do, there can sometimes be problems.
Wireless Password = Same password as your Verizon wireless network
    Verify Password
Click Update. Close AirPort Utility. The TC should restart in 15-20 seconds and you should have a green light. Log onto your Verizon wireless network and you should be able to "see" the TC now. To confirm, open Macintosh HD and look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window.
If the TC is located close to your Verizon router, it is easier (and more reliable) to configure the TC to connect that way, rather than using wireless. You'll still be able to perform backups over your regular Verizon network. Post back if this is an option for you and we can go over this type of setup.

  • How to transfer contacts from MacBook Pro Retina to old MacBook Pro running 10.5.8?

How do I transfer my latest updated contacts from my MacBook Pro Retina running 10.9.1 which uses the cloud to my old Macbook Pro running 10.5.8 which is not in the cloud?

Thank you very much, Linc, for your suggestion.  I should have mentioned one other thing.  The reason I want to do this is that I use an old phone and, after I upgraded to Mavericks, Missing Sync no longer worked with my MacBook Pro Retina - so my address book in my phone is getting out of date.  Because my phone is old (it's a Palm Centro), they apparently will not likely update their software for this phone.  So I was thinking I could sync my phone with my old MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 if I could regularly get that old address book to mirror contacts in my new MacBook Pro.  You said I could open the contacts in the old MacBook by double-clicking the vCard file. But will that action put them into the old address book on the old Mac so that I could then sync the phone to it? I really need to overwrite the address book in the old Mac with the info that I am bringing over from the new MacBook.
I'd be grateful if you could tell me whether what I want to do is doable.  This old phone works perfectly well and I don't need a new phone with a data plan that I would pay for but never use.
    Thanks!
Note - I accidentally indicated that my response solved my question.  I clicked the wrong box.  Linc is the one who solved the problem.

  • Noise from MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013

    Hi,
I wonder if noise from my MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013 is normal. I can hear it only in quiet room (first time I heard it in the middle of the night).  It’s very quiet noise. I don't know what to compare this noise. For me it’s sounds like clicking the spring. I can hear it when scrolling the webpage by trackpad, start mission control by gesture (or F3 key), changing the full screen apps by gesture or when minimize Safari or other apps. I think it depends on the graphic system work. It’s a little lauder when I use 1680x1050 scaled resolution than use 'best for display' resolution. I think the noise occurs when graphic system do some operation. Is it possible?
Today I was in Authorized Service Provider but technician heard nothing. There I can't hear this noise too, because this noise is very quiet and there is not total silence. Diagnostic tools show that everything is ok. But I still hear it in total quiet room. I tried to record this noise by iPhone but it can't do that.
Can you do me a favor and check this on your MacBook? Sit in totally quiet room, please. Set the scaled resolution 1680x1050 then bring ear closer to the keyboard and scroll a webpage (which have a lot of graphics) by gesture on the trackpad, start mission control or open notification center. Can you hear then any noise? Please listen carefully, because this is very quiet noise.
I’ll be very gratefully for your help. I wonder if only my MacBook making this noises or all MacBook Retina late 2013 making this.
    Regards,
    Mateusz

    Hi Mateusz,
I have the same issue on my new MBP retina 13 late 2013. It's not disturbing because I can hear it in only very quiet room and only if the content of the screen is changing (like scrolling web pages). It reminds me the sound of old 3'5'' hard discs. I first thought it's a hdd, but then realised my mac has only SSD.
I think it's a noise from the voltage regulators. This is normal for very high speed high-voltage signals.
But any way, MBP 13 late 2013 is the best laptop I ever saw
It's just silent and cool like an ipad. I wonder if it has a rotating cooler at all.
    Jon Bo
Thank you Jon Bo for your response. I agree with you. This noise is something like electronic noise, and it is related to the graphics card.
The rMBP 13 late 2013 works without any noise other then situations I’ve described above. The noise is so quiet that I can't hear it when e.g. external HDD working in the same room.

  • Odd alert sound from Macbook Pro Retina

Hi, my 13-in MacBook Pro Retina is late 2013 version installed with OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.
Recently, every now and then there will be a "ding" tone that sounds.
I have checked. I do not have any alerts on nor is it the incoming email alert.
I also could not find this sound under the sound alerts menu.
    Anyone can be of help?

sorry to hear about your problems. Try running Audio MIDI, see what's it's set it for both the line out/digital out. Holding down the Alt Key (next to the space bar) gets you a list of all the input and output devices on your macbook pro. Also, see if accessibility is turned on under system preferences.  Other than that, I can't say. if you have wifi problems, see if there's an update for it (airport?) or see if you can change  Wi-ifi channels on your printer
    well, I tried anyways

I just recently purchased a new macbook pro retina and was really excited to use it at school and for classes.  Well at my school when you select the network, it will connec to it, and once it connects a popup window will come up in your browswer and you will type in a username and password.  once you do this you can use the internet.  Well i try to connect with my laptop and it wont bring up the popup window and will just show an ! over the wifi signal display.  When i open network preferences it says its connected, but i can access the internet.  the IT guy at my school tried for hours, and get get it (although he didnt know much about macs) and i cant seem to get it either.  Can anymore help me?

    Something else to check ..
Open System Preferences > Network then select the Wi-Fi tab.
Drag the school wi fi network name to the top of the list.
You can open System Preferrences by clicking the System Preferences icon in your Dock

  • 1 macbook pro and 2 time capsules

I have 1 macbook pro retina and 2 time capsules.
The time capsule at work i want used to backup my work related content, and the time capsule at home i want used to backup my personal content.
I don't want to exclude the same folders for work time capsule and home capsule.
    Can this be done?
    Thanks

Look at one of the other backup utilities.. TM whilst convenient has plenty of other alternatives..
For a simple folder backup you should be able to script a backup as a rather simple file copy. I am not sure what is available in the Mac world to do this but but I used similar tools that simply script a zip backup of working folders in windows.. that worked very well.
