Super slow / inconsistent broadband
Ok - i've been having very slow/inconsistent broadband for several weeks now and I am on my third call to BT tech support which hasn't yielded anything.
I have a HH2 which was wired into my 1 and only telephone socket - with some extension cabling - then ethernet connected to my TV and wirelessly connected to 2 laptops (never both on at once) and a couple of smartphones.
Ability to use internet through any device took a dive a few weeks ago - and hasn't worked consistently since.
Since my first call to BT I have put it into my phone socket via the test socket, used inSSIDer3 to try shifting to a quieter wireless channel, and replaced my ethernet cable - all with no sustainable improvement. BT have also sent a replacement HH2 - which has made no discernable difference. In fact performance had actually improved briefly before the replacement HH turned up - but then took another dive - so I thought I may as well switch to the 'new' one i'd been sent...
Some days it is OK - yesterday my wife watched a full episode of 'The Apprentice' using the laptop on wifi with no problems. Today it is crawling whilst connected direct to the HH with an ethernet cable...
I have run http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ repeatedly over the last few weeks. Typical results when it isn't working are like the test i've just run:

The 'further diagnostics' option on the speedtest NEVER works - it just seems to time out/crash

Some detail I forgot - i have the NTE5 socket and, since calling BT tech support have got the HH plugged direct into the test socket, via my ASDL filter, with no improvement.
I have done quiet line test - my only telephone is a wireless one - and it can be fairly crackly - so I do hear some squeaks and crackles when doing the quiet line test - but have no idea if this is my phone or the line.
Broadband WAS repeatedly disconnecting (i.e. the B was going red then orange then back to blue) but as I don't sit looking at the HH all day I have no idea how often it is happening...
After my third call to BT i have an engineer due to come out on Monday with the ominous "if we can't find a fault it'll cost you £100" ringing in my ears...

Having returned to the family home after a spell abroad, I've found the internet has slowed down considerably.
According to the family, this slow down happened about 2 or 3 months ago and as a heavy internet user, I'm finding it unbearable! I have contacted BT, but haven't received a call back.

I believe that the router is connected to the only socket on that particular line- there's no phone plugged into it as it's an old business line that is now used solely for the internet.
The router was reset a couple of hours ago after a whole day of it not broadcasting any internet: The router would show up in the list of available wireless networks from my computer, but on selecting it would instantly disconnect.

Super slow BT broadband ; BTinfinity1
Hi, having previously been a ADSL customer on BT internet for some years, receiving a speed of 6 mbps download, I decided when Infinity became available at my local exchange I would change over. I was quoted a download speed of 22mbps, so I decided to sign up for Infinity 1 at 38mbps. What a big mistake this has proved to be.
Since installation approx one year ago I have had the line faulted on twice after complaing of slow speed ( 2mbps download). After the last line fault in February, the engineer left me with a speed of 25.48 mbps down and an upload speed of 4.44 mbps. I was quite happy with this speed. Within 10 days it had dropped to 16.10mbps and has continued to fall in stages to 2.26 mbps and 0.01 upload the same speed as the first fault. The readings are the third test results on the BT Wholesale performance tester . It has never shown any inclination to increase speed only a steady fall in the download speed. The master socket is next to my computer and it is connected by ethernet cable and I am approximately half a mile from the cabinet. I use a BT homehub 3 connected to a Openreach ECI type 18 modem.
The third test results say as Follows "Your service was found to be performing poorly. Please raise a fault with your service provider, stating that the BT performance tester tool indicates poor service throughput performance after the third test".
I am no expert (senior citizen) in the technical workings of the internet and would welcome any advice on what could be causing this problem and if it could be a problem with my computer equipment. I don't want to incurr any BT service charges for obvious reasons

Go to Solution.I have recently encountered this very problem, however, not quite at the atrocious speeds you have received.
We had Infinity 2 installed with an estimate of 60mb download and 19mb upload; when installed were happy with the 49 down and 19 up we were receiving. After a week of being installed speeds started to plummet and drops out started cropping up at regular intervals.
After 6 weeks of service we are now receiving 13mb down and 13mb up. Reported the fault, had an engineer visit on monday to tell us there was no problem at the cabinet and the issue was underground. Therefore they sent an underground engineer out this afternoon who left a note on the front door stating the issue had been solved and service returned to normal. So a quick speed test this evening showed (to my surprise... not...) that our speed had not improved. Not even slightly...
Contacted BT this evening, through online chat as I dont currently have a house phone, and they called me back on my mobile. They told me OpenReach still believe this case is OPEN and plan to return tomorrow. How can somebody actually write down on a piece of paper that the issue is resolved if it isnt. We are paying almost £40 a month to receive a third of the speed they quoted us on sign up. Its fair to say we are all pretty disappointed with the service so far, but at the same time the more I read these forums, the more I realise it isnt uncommon.

Battery replacement caused super slow performance
I experience a strange behaviour of my laptop after the battery change i.e. horrible lags – the operating system is literally choking, and loading takes.
First I thought that maybe that is a coincidence so I tried to clean the drive, to use a disk utility and other actions which one normally does to regain the performance, but without any result
I also opened the system monitor app and the memory usage seems fine
Today when I came to work my laptop turned off in the night and when I rebooted the fan ran like crazy – also it came back to its old super fast performance,
I thought the problem solved itself but the fan didn’t want to turn off
I checked the battery but then the battery icon showed x on the battery meaning there was no battery

I did SMC reset and ideed the fan stopped and the battery status went back to normal but at the same time the system went back to

Brand new iMac: super slow web browsing
Brand new iMac is super slow while browsing the web.
We have cable internet, and the iMac is connected via ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router. We have a Windows machine connected to the same router.
The Windows machine loads web pages extremely quickly, the iMac takes 20 seconds to a minute to load anything.
Clearly there is a settings problem on the iMac. No idea what.
It isn't the router.
It isn't the broadband connection.
It isn't the DNS server.
Please help!I'm not sure if you understood my original post, however, I will re-iterate it here.
I have several machines connected to the same network.
MacBook Pro
Windows machine
iMac.
Only the iMac exhibits any problems.
Clearly, the ISP is not the issue. The iMac is connected via Ethernet to the same router as the PC.
Clearly the Mac is the problem.
Changing DNS server has no effect. -
Super Slow Internet Browsing with Airport or LAN and networking activities.
The people at AppleCare are awesome and way polite. But I am a new Mac user and still in my 90 day apple care plan and have not been able to convince anyone that my internet connection on my MacBook is Super Slow. I have quantified it (350k - 550k download and 150k - 250k upload depending on my location), whereas at work right next to my older PC (which I am still using to go on line with since it is more like 3-5mb download) and my Desk Top PC and My Laptop PC are both more than three times faster for internet browsing and network transfers. The Airport on my MacBook seems to be faster than using the Ethernet cable (which I find weird), but they are both more than three times slower than my PC's no matter where I am working.
Which brings me to my next issue, simply changing channels on the router is not the solution because while I can do that on my router at home or at my office. I can not walk into Starbucks or into the school library or my friends houses and ask them all to "fix" their routers for me. These MacBooks need to get fixed.
This is frustrating and I am still waiting for a real solution.

P.S. - I'm beginning to resent buying my MacBook ProI can post the info you request below, but as I said before, my connection is not dropping, and the problem is not only with Airport. I have an old PC running a 56K modem at home that is faster than my MBP whether I am using Airport or if I connect through my LAN...

Until recently my broadband has been faultless (well not bad anyway), in the last week or so it seems to have nosedived in terms of performance, and I am struggling to work out why. The three errors are me pulling the cable out to rest the conenction. The massive FEC / CRC errors are a bug I think. Does anyone know about Loss of Framing and what 0dBm output power are?
I ran the BT speedtest and got some truly terrible results, which said that my profile was 7000kbps, good, and my download was 146kbps, bad.
Anyone know what might be causing my super slow connection? I disconnected all computers barring my laptop in case somethign was secretly thrashing the service, but it didnt help.

Mark.I have similar problems. My connection was fine until about a week ago, when I started getting noise on my phone.
This has now been fixed, but since then, my Broadband connection speed has dropped from around 2M to 135k. I had an engineer out this morning to check what had been fixed during the first engineer visit (to fix the phone) and once he'd finished, he tested in to the socket to find that he could get 7M speeds. However, since he's been gone, I've plugged my setup back in and still get speeds of 135k.
I've tried removing phone connection so only router plugged in, I've changed filter to see if that was the issue - only things I've not yet tried because they are more hassle first off is trying another ADSL cable and/or a new router
My Hub manager shows the following, but not sure if this helpful to anyone, or if anyone can point me in the right direction of other things to try, I'd be greatly appreciative.

WIFI loading speed is super slow, please help.
Hi there.
I just got my first apple laptop and it seems that i have problem i can't solve. I have pretty good broadband but my macs downloading speed is super slow, i called support, the guy on the other side told me something i could do, but most of it didn't work. Apparently my friends laptop has downloading speed over 400 Kb/s while mine is just 10Kb/s, well it seems unfair, since we pay equally for internet and he uses most of it.
Could anyone suggest what is wrong, because i have pretty good feeling that there is some mystery.

I cannot specify the exact moment when it started but i think it was directly or short after the last firmware update when surfing or in fact anything that needs a networkconnection started to become reeaaally slow.
what happens is that it takes up to 45 seconds for a website to start loading or mails to load. even widgets like weather need forever to get a connection.
the funny thing is that once the initial connection is established (like a youtube video starting to load) the speed is ok again but sometimes it takes so long to start with loading that i get timeouts on pages that never had a problem before.
at first i figured that it was a problem with my internet provider (which it is not since the imac and ibook my husband uses over the same airport extreme basstation are superfast) then i thought it had something to do with the browser or java and started to re-install all of them
but 10 days ago i had to buy the ethernet usb adapter since i was working somewhere that had no WLAN and with the ethernet network connection the speed is there. its only when i need to connect to a wifi network (and i tried various ones, airport and other WiFi networks) that i have this veeeery annoying speed dump..
any suggestions?

Lion is super slow! Should I reinstall?

I have a 13” MacBook Pro that has a 2.7GHz i7 processor and 4GB of RAM. I bought this June at it came pre-installed with OS X Snow Leopard. In July, I upgraded to Lion and initially, my computer just had the spinning beach ball a lot more, but a day or two later, my computer seemed like it was running as normal (I’m assuming this was due to Spotlight indexing everything).
However, of late I’ve noticed my computer is SUPER slow! I first noticed the lag in processing speed when it took five minutes to transfer 1GB to a USB flash drive. (I then transferred the files to a Windows PC and back onto the same flash drive and the entire process occurred in under a minute).It takes over two minutes to start up and anywhere between ten seconds to a minute to open a regular application (i.e. iTunes, iPhoto, Firefox, etc). And my laptop heats up a lot faster these days too!
I’ve looked around the discussion forum and tried all the suggested solutions i.e. resetting the PRAM and the SMC, verifying and repairing the disk/permissions (including the one where you have to go through the recovery partition). But nothing has helped. If anything, it's getting worse! Every time I open disk utility now it says it’ll take 4 hours to verify the disk permissions! AHHH. And it’s not like my laptop is filled with useless files, either; my hard drive capacity is 500GB and it still has 372.7GB available. Oh, and I don’t have a virus either because I’ve run the Sophos anti-virus scan three times.
Normally, I’d have taken my laptop to the Apple Store and asked them to figure it out, but I’m currently in the Philippines and they only have Apple Resellers and fake Apple Stores here. I realise it sounds ridiculous but I’m deathly afraid they are either going to kill my MBP altogether or steal my parts.
I was wondering should I completely re-install Lion? If so, how exactly would I go about doing that? I do have a Time Machine back-up of everything on my 1TB external drive, but I don’t have any back-ups prior to getting Lion because I purchased my external later. Also, if I were to re-install Lion and restore from my Time Machine back-up would all my applications still work? I have Microsoft Office 201, Adobe Pro, Photoshop, etc. and if they get uninstalled, I don’t have any of my installation CDs here!

Thank you!Try to find out what is causing the loss of performance by starting the "Activity Monitor" (from Applications -> Utilities) and sort the processes according to real memory usage or CPU time by clicking at the column headers.
Also have a look at the free Disk space.
According to Apple the minimum hardware requirements for Lion are 2GB of RAM, but I found that not to be sufficient with the Applications I like to be running at the same time. For my workflow I needed 4 GB RAM when on SL, and with Lion I needed 8GB of RAM. The Activity monitor will tell you if you need to upgrade your RAM.
The second bottleneck with Lion is free disk space. Lion will run much more smoothly if you keep a least 10% (and a minimum of 20 GB) of your disk free.
If you find that you do need more RAM, but don't want to upgrade right now, look at the "Activity monitor" to find out which of your processes are fighting for memory and try to avoid running those together at the same time. I found that quite often Safari was eating the available memory and quitting Safari when I did not really need it did help a lot.

Wireless on My New MBP super slow
Hi everyone, I just bought a shiny new 15" Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.2, love it except my wireless is super slow when using it on my home network. I know I'm not the first to complain of this and that there are plenty of other threads about it, but I've tried some of the solutions on those thread to no avail. So I'm starting my own, can someone please help, I'm dangerously close to doing something irrational to my MBP. Ok here's a breakdown of my problem:
-I'm using a Belkin pre N1 router.
-I pay for 10mbs but I'm getting .5mbs using Airport but if I plug in the ethernet I achieve around 9mbs
-Airport shows a full signal
-My old IMac runs like a stallion on my network using Airport, so does my roommates Vista machine both getting around 8.5mbs
-I've made sure my IMac's and Macbook Pro settings are the same
-I've tried using an open dns, didn't work
-I've change my router from using a WEP to using a WPA, didn't work
-I've tried changing the broadcast signal from 11N/G to just 11N to 11N/G/B to 11G/B to 11B back to 11N/G, when I broadcasted just N wireless speed jump all the way up to 8mbs hooraay!!! until I quit safari and opened it again wireless speed went back to .5mps
-I've tried using every wireless channel 1-11 plus Auto, Again wireless speed jump all the way up to 8mbs hooraay!!! until I quit safari and opened it again wireless speed went back to .5mps
-I've tried doing a special little dance in front of it, didn't work except to make me ready to drop it like its hot this Saturday!!!
Nothing seems to work. I'm making a Apple genus appointment tomorrow but I have a sneaky feeling that it will be fine on their network and they'll tell me it's belkins problem. Which could be the case but why would my IMac and Vista computers work flawless and not my new MacBook. Please, please, please help. I've tried all the previous "fixes" I could find -- wipe and re-install, delete and replace AirPort entry in Network panel, new Location in Network panel, and so on. This is pretty bad... I haven't tried different DNS yet, but I don't see why the DNS should make any difference when my Mac Pro and the old Macbook seem fine with the servers from my ISP.

My 13" MBP MD 101 / A1278 / 9,2 / Mid 2012 is still in production and it is performing like a windows pc; super slow after updating it to Yosemite.I can't afford to upgrade its HDD to SSD and 4GB RAM to 16GB.
Tried everything found on internet, nothing got successful in making it fast as it was once with mountain lion. I hope I could have Yosemite's features and leopard's responsiveness and stability.
I think Apple guys have designed Yosemite only for SSDs only. They should design OS X according to every mac's different hardware, like if I have a spinning old hard drive it should mould itself to the capabilities of it and not demand responsiveness of an SSD.
Please do let me know if anyone have brilliant new idea other than found on the internet.

If you are not using TeamViewer, remove it also. If you had it running while you ran Etrecheck, then it doesn't need to be removed.

My MacBook Pro is running SUPER slow. When I start up my computer it takes forever to load up, when I play World of Warcraft it is painfully slow with logging in etc. Everything about starting a program takes forever to load up and then once you are in the program everything is super slow. My husband's macbook pro is a 17 inch 2009 and works WAY better and faster then mine. Also, i don't know if this is a related problem, but the power drains VERY quickly. For example, If I have a MS OFFICE program on I could be at 100% hooked up to my power and then if I go off of my battery, the battery life will only last about 30 to 45 minutes MAX.

Basically...
1) Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
Rule of thumb is about 15 to 20 GB
2) And adding more RAM is always a prudent move... (4GB of RAM is a minimum for Mavericks... 8GB at least would be better.)

try hard reset ( hold the sleep and home button together for a few second the iphone will restart and then the an apple logo will appear)

I have a Satellite L300-PSLB8E. It came with Vista Home Premium. After I made my recovery DVDs, I made a SATA disk from the drivers downloaded from the Toshiba website. I did the F6 thing, but kept still getting a blue screen when the setup program got to the "starting windows". I changed the SATA from AHCI to Compatibility in the BIOS and then managed to install XP without the SATA Disk. What is strange is that the sound lags and the disk access is super slow. I ran a speed test program and it showed that the HDD performance is only 5% of the performance in Vista. I have actually tested this on another identical laptop that was downgraded and it had the same problem. Any advice? Is it the AHCI Mode?
I think your have simply used wrong SATA drivers.
The point is that you need the SATA files from the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (if your notebook supports Intel chipset.)
So the SATA driver can be downloaded from the Intel website; search for Intel Matrix Storage Manager.
On the Intel page you will find a different packages; One with the .exe file and the other with dll files. You need the one with dll files in order to include the files using the nLite!
Last but not least check what Intel Matrix Storage Manager supports your chipset. The Intel page provides ALL details!
