Super slow super drive - iMac 27´i7

Hi! I baught a new iMac 27´ i7 th 27th of December 2011, and the super drive is super slow! It reads 0,1 MBs. How can ifix it?

I have a similiar issue. I bought a new 27" i7 upgraded the RAM too. When I back up DVDs on my older macbook (not a Pro) 13" the drive is much faster. The drive on the iMac is much slower too. You would think a more expensive and much newer iMac would have a faster drive. Starting to think I got a bum drive.

  • USB external Super Drive not recognized by iMac

Bought a new USB external Super Drive a few days ago (from Apple shop).
Plugged into my iMac 21.5", late 2013, and the iMac does not seem to want to recognise it.
Checked Finder and necessary boxes ticked up to show on Desktop, also does not show through remote devices.
Any help would be appreciated. Not a techie and 90 miles from my Apple shop. Not even sure I have filled the dam request in correctly (sorry).

Oddjob, the optical drive itself never shows up on the desktop,. What happens when you insert a disc? If a disc doesn't show up first check your connection. Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
There's also the possibility that the drive is bad.

  • I can't burn a dvd using any method, Idvd tells me that my super drive is missing, dvd studio pro quits when i click burn and disk utility keeps spitting the disk out when i click burn and enter the disk??? how do i repair my superdrive for imac

I can't burn a dvd using any method, idvd tells me that my super drive is missing, dvd studio pro quits when i click burn and disk utility keeps spitting the disk out when I click burn and enter the disk??? how do i repair my superdrive for imac, or how do I do whatever I need to do to get it working: I have already tried using a lens cleaning cd and also restored my nvram or something i forget what it was called but i restarted my computer holding down  command+optoion+p+r and still nothing???
Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.

Virtually any DVD burner that can connect to your Mac will work. They start at $40 on Amazon.

  • Known issues with the Super Drive on an iMac 2.7 Ghz

Are there any known issues with the Super Drive on an iMac 2.7 that would result in speed issues and a grinding sound?

Vertically installed super slim DVD drives are not as reliable as a plain desktop burner. I've had one fail in two of three iMacs and have always had an external which I use most of the time. Other than that, the brand new iMacs do not have a Super Drive, so if that is what you are inquiring about, the point is moot. You need to buy an external anyway. As far as speed, I have never used a burner at high speed - unless you have a professional model, you can easily get burn errors when burning at a fast speed; sometimes consumer models do well burning with high speeds , other times not.

  • Super Drive louder on new iMac?

We just got the new iMac home and am transfering our backups from cd/dvds and the super drive is considerable louder then the iMac G5 we took back. Is this normal for the drive in this iMac, or is this a problem whith my machine?

    Hallo,
I have the same or at least very similar question.
Just ordered the 21.5" imac with 1TB fusion drive. I need to transfer 450GB of photos from my old windows PC to the new imac set-up. This set-up will include some drive(s) for back-up, but not sure yet which drives.
Just moving the 450GB of photos to imac HD seems a bit much: with photos, applications and some other stuff 60-70 % of the imac HD would allready be consumed up right from the start.
I am using Lightroom for organizing, editing, etc.  of my pictures. So this should run as smooth as possible.
Any advice on a good configuration on how to work with iMac, Lightroom, 500 GB of pictures, external HD, back-up is welcome.
    thanks,
    Maarten

  • Imac optical super drive

I have the new Imac (late2012) with the fusion drive. Ive also bought an external super drive( mad by Apple) The trouble is that the computer refuse to play any kind of CD or DVD. It is rejecting it and ejects the record every time.
Anybody out there knowing something about this?

First, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, return the USB SuperDrive and buy a different external optical drives. There are better and cheaper optical drives you can use with the iMac

  • Super Drive in my Intel iMac making noise

My 21" Intel iMac (v.10.8.3) super drive just started making this chattering sound when I inserted a disc.
I had copied 4 CD's to iTunes, then the fifth started to make that loud chattering noise.
I ejected the disc and cleaned it up but that didn't help.

    One more long shot...

  • After getting my 2007 imac's HDD repaired, the super drive stopped working... How can i fix this?

After getting my 2009 imac's HDD repaired the super drive wont work anymore... How can I resolve this?!

I think you need to contact the repairer, and explain the problem as something may not have been reconnected properly on the re-assembly. That is not to be assumed as fact, so taking a diplomatic approach along these lines in negotiation would be in your interest.

  • Reconocimiento super drive en imac 6.1

He comprado un Super Drive de Apple y el Sistema "NO" me detecta el disco.
Alguien podria ayudarme con este problema.
    Muchas gracias

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'm still suspicious about the HDD. It is mounted top centre beneath the fan and the other symptoms fit. Were you able to run off the external drive over the last month?

like what troubleshooting do i have to do if applicable? this sound has been bothering me for months
my imac has a built in super drive

If it is 2010 imac it should boot into Apple Hardware Test, without the install disc if it has been upgraded to firmware version 1.8.
See if it generates any errors....

  • Is there a pro code for a new imac and super drive?

Is there a pro code for a new imac and super drive?

    Hi ..
No, there isn't but you might want to take a look at refurbished iMacs >  Refurbished Mac Computers - Refurbished Notebooks & Desktop Computers - Apple Store (U.S.)
Refurbished products come with the same one year limited warranty as does a new product.

  • How can I add A second Apple Super Drive to my Mac?

My Imac won't see the second super drive fitted. Can this be done?

Is it check in the box that says CDs, DVDs, iPhods? If the box is checked and it still can't be seen do a SMC reset.
    SMC RESET

Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
