Super sluggish iMac G4

A few days ago, my iMac became weirdly sluggish. For example, webpages are taking 15-20 seconds to render, programs take a minute or two to open (while the icon is bouncing in the dock), files take a long time to copy to a new folder, etc.
Starting up from the CDs and running Disk Utility showed no problems, although it took a long time to process the hard drive.
I've also tried resetting the pram, which did nothing.
Any sugestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Could you please single click on Macintosh HD and then choose Get Info from the File Menu. Please post back with the Capacity, Available and Used values.
It's my experience that the most common cause of a sudden slowdown where nothing appears to have changed is the lack of free hard disk space.
Any OS needs room to breathe and you should leave about 15% of your total free.

My iMac (upgraded to Lion) has been behaving super sluggishly.  slow to open my Word docs, Slow to close webtabs,.just so  S L O W.  Suggestions??
I have already tried restarting... I have very few programs..just the MSOffice App.  I did look at a lot of websites (looking for vacation rentals).

Well - all of the above were ultimately caused by one thing, of course the one thing I didn't replace - my 5-port Netgear 1Gb switch.   Got a replacement and everything is fine.   Lion was simply installed at the time the switch failed.

  • Premiere super sluggish unless I use other User account

Today Pr started being super sluggish ... timeline zoom in / zoom out took 1-2 seconds per action ... loading clips slow  ... etc.
So I tried logging out and logging in as another user, and then it worked fine.
My question is ... I don't want to set up a whole new account ... how do I repair / reset my main account's settings?
The only thing I cannot afford to lose is my keyboard mapping.
Should I just delete the "~/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro" folder? Is that enough?
Then just put back a copy of "~/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/7.0/Profile.../Mac/Adobe Premiere Pro Custom.kys" ?
    Mac 10.9.1

That seems like a good plan, but make a copy of that folder just in case.  And you may be able to accomplish the same thing by holding down the Shift and Opt keys when you launch Pr.  If you hold down those keys when you start Pr from the desktop/dock/application folder, Shift will clear your plugin cache and Opt will reset your preferences.  Make sure you have competely exited Pr before trying this.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • Dock/Dialog animation super sluggish after upgrade.

I'm on a Mac Pro 2011 modal. After the upgrade the Dock and Dialogs animation gets super sluggish; however, when I put Dock on the side it's smooth (the dialogs are still very sluggish) - any ideas? My MBP doesn't have any issues though

how long ago did you finish upgrading?  for the first hour or so it might be sluggish because Spotlight is building its index, once that's done it should be back to normal

  • After Effects CS6 Interface Super Sluggish in Windows and not in OS X!?

I am switching from an "old" 2007 Mac Pro to a new custom built Win 7 64bit PC. Just starting to do work tests and noticed that the interface in AE CS6 on the new Windows machine is super sluggish. Mainly the Layer window when your scrolling through a heavy comp with tons of layers is super sluggish. Just scrolling up and down not scrubbing. Same project on the old Mac does not have this problem and the scrolling of the layers window is super smooth!? What is causing this? I even have the Hardware Accellerate mode on for the interface. Any help would be greatly appreciated because this will be an awful way to work if this is the state of AE on Windows. Thanks.

    I'm having the same problem.
Interface is just pure sluggishness, on a brand new machine that rocks. Rendering is fast, but opening a comp with more than just "some" layers and a lot keyframes gets unusable. Just dragging a box to select keyframes for example is extremely sluggish.
Opened the same comp in CS5.5 and CS5 and it worked totally fine.
Any news on this? I'm more frusted with CS6 than with any other AE version until now.
My cache is set to 60GB on a new 830 series SSD from Samsung.

It appears that the Google software may be the culprit.  It's know to slow down performance.  I'd remove the Google software and only use Google Drive when you need it if you must.  Remove it from the User Log in Items.  If you don't want to use Safari give Firefox a try.  It's much better than Chrome and more secure.
You're not having memory issues as seem with the size of Pageouts you're getting but 3 GB of RAM iis marginal.  Your model can utilize up to 6 GB of memory.  You can replace the 1 GB module with a 4 GB module from Crucial.com or otherworldcomputing.com and see an increase in performance.
Make sure your Wacom tablet software is up to date.

  • Sluggish iMac performance; maintenance help needed

I have a 21.5 inch, mid-2011 iMac with 12 GB memory and a 1 Tb drive (660 GB free). Have upgraded to Mavericks, and the iMac is running slow (although it was sluggish prior to the upgrade).
Am looking for advice on how to get things sped up a bit. I have removed some unneeded startup items. And have run EtreCheck with results as follows. Have also repaired permissions and verifed disk. All seems to be in order.
Can anyone offer additional hints on performance improvments before I go with a clean install?

I don't see anything obvious that would be causing your Mac slowdowns.
You need to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied. You may need to go the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.
Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins, also.
Also, if you have any third party devices, like keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card  readers, etc, you need to update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions.
    Good Luck!

  • Slow / Sluggish iMac after Software Update

After recently running Software Update on my iMac, every program is now running extremely slow.  My iMac is slow to start-up, and importing files into iTunes and iPhoto seemingly takes forever!  Basically any function that must access the hard drive is now acting very sluggish.
I am using an iMac with a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and 3 GB of RAM (the max for this model).  The versions of software installed are:  OS X 10.6.8, Safari 5.1, iTunes 10.4, and iPhoto '11 ver. 9.1.5.
Is there anything about these recent software updates that could explain why accessing the hard drive is now very slow?  BTW there is no indication that Spotlight is still indexing.

Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue.  Need this information so that the users can avoid the "been there, done that" scenario type responses.  This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried.  Thank you.
For instance:  Did you repair permissions and restart your computer after updating?

  • Super slow super drive - iMac 27´i7

Hi! I baught a new iMac 27´ i7 th 27th of December 2011, and the super drive is super slow! It reads 0,1 MBs. How can ifix it?

I have a similiar issue. I bought a new 27" i7 upgraded the RAM too. When I back up DVDs on my older macbook (not a Pro) 13" the drive is much faster. The drive on the iMac is much slower too. You would think a more expensive and much newer iMac would have a faster drive. Starting to think I got a bum drive.

  • OT: 10.4.5 super-sluggish?

I've installed the latest OS upgrade on my iBook that I use on tour and for emails, surfing, etc. On my main system I'm still enjoying the supa-dupa stability of 10.4.3 + LP7.1.1
    But...
Is it only in my iBook or the system had become super-slow? Safari looks like downgraded to 1.0... very, very slow in scrolling and many many "beach balls" lasting 5/30 seconds... very annoying.
In the finder, menu scrolling is 50% slower (looks like os9)
Are you guys experiencing the same probs? And what about Logic?

I have actually been experiencing some bits of sluggishness as well on my Dual 2GHz G5....
For example, I will be accessing a menu, and before it folds down, it has to think for 5-10 seconds occasoinally. This doesnt happen very often, but I have noticed it lately with the 10.4.5 upgrade.

  • Sluggish iMac 2008

    I have a iMac 2008, 3.06 GHZ, Core 2 Duo, running 10.7 with 6 GB of RAM and a 500 GB HDD.
I have experience slowness when running Lion so I created a bootable external HDD and switch to the external HDD as my startup disk.  I have experience in doing this, that the system runs faster on start up, programs load faster and webpages load faster when using my external HDD as the start up disk.
Could my iMac be having some HDD problems in that's why it runs slow?
Is the processor too slow on the iMac?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated?

Well I have a 2GHz 2GB, RAM, 120GB HD  MacBook Pro and it's fast enough for me.
Have you used Activity Monitor to review what is running?

  • Can a supped up imac handle basic lightroom and photoshop usage?

I need to upgrade to a imac or a new mac pro.  The mac pro doesn't come with anything but the computer.  the imac comes with everything, keyboard, monitor, etc.  But can it run lightroom and photoshop as fast as I need without over heating and slowing down?

If you need speed, the i7 CPUs are the fastest. If you can't afford a high capacity SSD, consider the largest capacity Fusion drive.  If you are working a lots of images then, I would advise getting your iMac with only the base 8 GBs of RAM, then when you get this iMac, purchase cheaper third party Mac compatible RAM.
I would install, at least another 8 GBs of for a total of 16 GBsof RAM, but if you can afford. it, load up on more than 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

  • Flash CS3 AS editor = super sluggish?

Just wondering if others have the same problems. The AS
editor is incredibly sluggish for me, to the point of irritation,
and I'm not sure if it's a memory related problem or what. Also,
switching between fla's is much slower than Flash 8.
    Currently I'm using Vista with 4Gigs of DDR2 800 Ram (only 3
can be used by Vista at once) and 4 Gigs ReadyBoost. Everything
else seems to run fine, Photoshop, Illustrator & Dreamweaver.
Dreamweaver seems to have the same code editor as flash, so I'm not
sure what would cause the lag for Flash.
    Thanks!

Vista scares me - i hear nothing but performance problems
with apps running on Vista. Not to say
this is the issue but felt the need to voice my own personal
agenda here on a public forum :)
Sticking with XP and then someday a Mac as well.

  • Super Slow iMac 24"

    Hello,
I've just completed a fresh install of Snow Leopard 10.6 with all the latest updates as a last ditch effort for the slowness of my machine. Everything is clean and fresh, no issues with the install. Here's the kicker - can take up to half an hour to boot up, it takes 90 seconds just for Safari to launch and if I click on the finder menu anywhere the pinwheel entertains me for about 30 seconds before a menu drops down. Activity monitor is for all intents and purposes flatlined. When it's downloading something it seems to go in spurts...like maybe it downloads fine but then struggles when writing to disk...I'm hoping it's my hard drive but it passes disk check. Any ideas?

So far I have been able to get up to 65MB/s over my Firewire 800. Keep in mind drive speeds will vary and most definitely become slower as the drive gets closer to full capacity. Try running xbench on the drive while it's connected to your iMac and then again while connected to the PB. Just run the drive test.

Here is another nice write test that Looby originally posted:
It's easy to check your drive's sequential write performance without Xbench.
Just open a Terminal.app window and enter the following commands (each
command will run for about 15-20 seconds before you see the results):
    dd bs=4096 count=262144 if=/dev/zero of=~/Desktop/junk_1GB
    dd bs=262144 count=4096 if=/dev/zero of=~/Desktop/junk_1GB
The first command creates the file "junk_1GB" on your desktop and fills it
with 1GB of zeroes, in 4KB blocks. The second command re-writes the
file using 256KB blocks. You can re-enter the commands (as often as
you like, and in any order) to re-check the results.
When you're finished, drag "junk_1GB" to the trash, and empty the trash.
