SUPER USEFUL TIP: Use clean titles as adjustment layers in Final Cut Pro X

One thing I love in After Effects are adjustment layers and I just realized you can actually use titles as effects in Final Cut Pro X and they behave just like adjustment layers (actually you can go much further in Final Cut Pro X).
So titles process everything below in Final Cut Pro X even with effects applied to it. So why not just build clean title in Motion 5, put that to top "track" and add effects to it. This way you don't have to hassle that much with compound clips.
This technique works with all effects (also color board works on titles) so for example if you want to have certain look for some period of time simply add clean title to top track for that time and add effect to it. I think this technique has tons of potential for people who want to keep their timelines in order and don't want to create complex compound clip messes.
If you don't have Motion 5 you can download Adjustment Layer here. Just extract contents to your Movies/Motion Templates/Titles folder and you'll find it in Final Cut Pro X Titles under Adjustment Layer.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open the Mac App Store and go to Purchases. Do you see Final Cut Pro X listed?
If so, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and delete Final Cut Pro X. Then, go to the Mac App Store and download Final Cut Pro X for free.
If you don't see it in Purchases, see if it's hidden, and if so, unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928 If it doesn't work, contact with the Mac App Store support > http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact

The frame rate shows in the Inspector. Conform in the retiming menu of the toolbar will let you change the frame rate.

  • Titles lose glow effect in Final Cut Pro X

Im using Final Cut Pro X and when I create a title with the glow feature after a while of editing the feature turns off and you can't make the title glow anymore without creating a new one. Still after you make a new one soon the glow effects eventually turns off but it says it's on.
The project im working on is an hour long. Also it's had one other glitch where in three clips one to two frames go blank. After I added titles to the clips the frames went back to normal and the others that i didnt want text I added blank titles to fix the frames. Any advise on what I should do?

In the Timeline position your Playhead at the starting position.
In the Viewport position the Shape Mask at the starting position.
In the Inspector click the Add Keyframe button.
Press Control-V to open the Animation Editor to see your keyframes.
Move the Playhead and the Shape Mask to a new position.
In the Inspector click the Add Keyframe button.
Continue adding keyframes until you have defined the Shape Mask’s movement.

  • Can i use cinema tools that came with FCP7 with new final cut pro x

I want to make sure I can still add smooth slow motion to my clips by using cinema tools instead of just slowing down the video. I am debating on upgrading to FCPX but would like to continue to use my older programs when needed.

I think FCP-X contains frame rate conforming as options within the application - making Cinema Tools not necessary for that purpose.
Best to ask in the FCP-X forum, here.

  • Why can't I use HD video from my Samsung Galaxy S2 in Final Cut Pro 6?

My Samsung Galaxy S2 shoots gorgeous 1080P HD Video.  It has no trouble importing into iPhoto, but when I want to edit in Final Cut Pro 6, it won't accept the file.  Anyone know how I can fix this?  Thanks.

FCP doesn't edit the format the camera shoots. You need to convert the video files to ProRes...then import into FCP.
If you want an app that edits formats natively, look at Adobe Premiere CS5.5.

  • How do you find missing titles, effects, and generators in final cut pro x?

Actually, that's only one of two questions...
    ONE
When I attempt to export a movie, uncompressed, not through Compressor and not sharing to an Apple device, I get an error saying my Project has "missing or offline titles, effects, or generators."
There is a little yellow warning triangle next to the project name.
But there are no little yellow warning triangles next to anything in my libraries, and everything plays through in the Timeline.
Before exporting, how can I identify the supposedly missing elements???
    TWO
After attempting to export the same movie via the Share item to an iiPhone, i received a Quicktime Error: -50.
    Interpretation, please?

I recently added a new plugin (mObject) and was experimenting with it. I decided to create a "temporary" library on my root drive since it's the fastest in my setup. I prefer to have major files like the library at the top level of my drives, and for the internal drive, that's outside my User folder. That's when all the trouble started.  I would manually start a render and FCPX would not stop... would not completely render the clip... I would get "dashed" orange render lines over the clip. The only way to stop the rendering was to add something new to the storyline (that includes going into background tasks and trying to stop or pause the rendering from there!)  Once I moved the library back into my user folder (and inside Movies), all the rendering problems stopped.
The only connection I can make is that FCPX is getting hung up on user permissions and the "current user". A lot of these issues started when I upgraded to a new iMac and restored all my old software (from the previous iMac) from Time Machine. It made me alter my user name for the new machine and I had some segments on this new machine with the older user permissions which I had to manually change to the new username in many cases.
If you have strict (user only) permissions on your RAID, try loosening them or make sure that you add your username to the list with read/write permissions. (? perhaps.)

  • Are the sound clips from Final Cut Pro Fair Use?, Are the sound clips from Final Cut Pro Fair Use?

I recently found YouTube had flaged a video for containing a "third party" sound clip.  All clips I've used in videos for YouTube have come directly from Final Cut Pro X.  Any idea if the sound clips are Fair Use?  I'm not sure how to repsond to YouTube and don't want to get a mark against my account due to this.

You can pretty much forget about monetizing that specific video.
[Okay... I'm going to ramble now...]
To avoid problems with youtube, you need to post a copyright (like this: @2013 by Your Name) on the video (I recommend within the first 10 seconds) -- and you better have it *right*. If you use other audio and video, as long as you have secured the proper permissions for use, you can still claim a copyright to the video you post on YouTube -- it is your creation (but it better not be a single clip of somebody else's work being passed off as something you did -- just to be clear -- your videos need to have original content that you created in order to justify the © you put on it. If you use *other stuff* as long as it's *with* permissions, it's still your video.) [If your video is going to be monetized -- make absolutely sure you have that permission for *commercial* use! Quite a lot of sources will specify that their materials *cannot* be used for any commercial use without further permissions, if at all. With Apple Loops (pro apps music and sound) you do have that express permission to be used in commercial works as long as it follows the EULA. More below.)]
You also need to specify the music and/or sound effects are "licensed from Apple Computer and used with permission" and you might as well state they are "made with Apple Loops". YouTube understands the EULA of the Apple Pro software (Logic, STP, FCP/FCPX, etc...) -- but even Apple licensed all that stuff from outside sources. Apple just takes care of paying "them" for it in advance so you don't have to (you buy it with the cost of the software license.)
You cannot use any of the "music beds" by themselves, in their entirety (all those nice long demo pieces everybody likes so much and you hear several times a day on [local] TV commercials). The EULA actually specifically states this (although you might have to read it two or three times until it becomes clear...LOL). Even loops are not to be released "as is", in their entirety, in any "derivative work". So, basically, make sure some other sound is mixed in with it (if it's music, add drums or other percussion, harmony, or duck it under talking, etc...)
The point is, no matter what audio source you have, if it is *music* (or foley) and EVEN IF you are the creator of that music or sound effect, you need to specifically put it in writing IN the video (not in the description). You need to reference the source (e.g.: stock footage by BottledVideo.com) and state it's being used with (or by) permission. [According to YouTube: I have copyright infringed MYSELF!!! just for leaving out all this *stuff* from my subsequent videos (music that I composed and performed myself on guitar... I was livid... but it stuck!).]
I can pretty much guarantee that within minutes of  posting your video (if it is monetized) -- some real live person at youtube puts eyes on that video to make sure it is properly "signed". I can tell by how long it takes for the monetize checkmark to go from dark to light green -- usually less than 10 minutes.
If your video is not monetized, and it's not a blatant violation, they probably will let you off with a warning, tell you that you don't need to do anything "right now" and it won't count as a mark against you... If it IS monetized, it won't be - they'll turn it right off and your chances of winning a challenge are almost 0 (unless you can PROVE you own the material -- and  I have won a challenge -- see * below);  and you will probably see a "Copyright Notices" (or similar) item in the menu on your channel settings. If you can redo the video - pull the old one, put in the new info and re-up it.  It's a royal PITA, but in this day and age, it's a necessity.
All videos destined for youtube should be treated as mini motion pictures and be prepared as such with full "disclosures" in titling... Welcome to  21st Century Pox [This statement is not meant to be derogatory to 21st Century Fox or imply any association or criticism or slander, and is only to be intended to be received as a parody on a common phrase that is currently still in use... No words were harmed in the formation of this pun.]
Get the point? YouTube tries to tell everybody -- but they've done a pretty lousy job of doing it. It's taken me, oh, I guess a year or so to learn to "behave" after wandering through a mire of confusing information from too many different sources -- and even if I am the sole producer of 100% of all the content in the video, I *still* have to place that © and "commit" it; it is *not* taken on faith.  I actually had to go back and reread all my licenses and interpret the legalese to figure it out. It would have been simpler if they just put it: Your video is a miniature professional production. Make sure it includes all titling to reflect all participants -- *just like you'd see in a modern major motion picture or a major broadcast television series* -- I think everyone would pretty much understand what that involves. You don't have to get quite that extreme, just cover you bases and your a©©.
I tried to cover it all... but I'm pretty sure I haven't... so... good luck!
*How I won my challenge with an Apple Loops composition:
    1) the music, even though using "canned" loops, was an original complex composition (I'll argue theory with anyone about this... it will be based on limited sets and recombinants as well as the theory of instrumentation and timing. In other words - I massage the heck out of loops until they don't sound anything like the originals. I almost never use audio loops -- always MIDI.) [BTW - this was another instance of copyright infringing myself - I had used the same music in a previous video I produced a year or so earlier... when I, like you, thought I was "free" to use the clips as I saw fit.]
    2) the music I used in the video was originally created in Logic and I made sure the ID3 tags were filled in with my name and copyright information
    3) I have a YouTube Associated Website (think this is a "partner" thing... and google "sanctioned") but if you see it, make sure you associate your domain. [I think you might be able to create a Google+ account and associate a domain that way if it's not part of your YouTube settings.]
    4) I uploaded the original mp3 with the ID3 tags to my associated domain.
    5) in the challenge, I 1) attached the original mp3 (w/ID3 tags); 2) gave youtube a link to the copy on my associated website for *verification* that the files belonged to ME; (and they already had the URL to the video in question -- a basic 3 point verify.)
It worked. They accepted the verifcation. (And this was the first challenge I've been able to win.) [This was very recent. What about the others? I might get a chance to complete the verifications, but I know for some, I've used up my challenges. The only other option is to pull them and redo them...]
One last word of advice: It does not pay to get "huffy", indignant, or righteous with YouTube in a challenge. They don't care.  <-- read that again a lot more slowly...  They have their own behinds to take care of — and your video (and/or account) lives (or dies) by their grace. If you read that and infer that I have been those things, then yes, I have... to absolutely no avail... even though I thought I was right (to the best understanding I had at the time) — they have rules. Be respectful. In general, they're pretty relaxed about all this even though it might not look that way to many users. Once you get the rules down, everything goes a lot easier... even if it is a little more work. You have to take responsibility for your own work.

how do i engage my 8 core mac pro to use all it's cores when using final cut pro and other applications that need processing power? at the moment they seem to be idle...

First, did you use Setup or Migration Assistant? That can happen when coming from a PowerMac or sometimes even from another (Intel) Mac.
Second, wait for the next version of Final Cut due very soon to ship (may have to wait for the ".1" of course to clean up any early issues.

There are a few apps that are better.  I think you can run multiple instances of Handbrake for one.

  • When I use Greek accenting and polytonic characters in a title, Final Cut Pro X quits unexpectedly. What should I do?

When I try to write a title in Greek using the Greek alphabet, Final Cut Pro X quits unexpectedly, the moment I press the button for the Greek accenting (" ' "). This happens only when I press the button. If for example, I write the title in TextEdit and then copy paste it in FCPX then the title is pasted correctly and the program does not quit.
An example of title: "Εγώ", so as soon as I press the accenting and then "ω", then everything freezes and FCPX quits.
It must be a bug, but it really causes a problem. Temporarlily, I always c/p to textEdit and then paste it to FCPX. But I am also using Polytonic Greek system (fonts), so it is a bugger to always c/p. Is there a solution to this?
    Thank you.

This seems to be a bug, as there was another thread that reported this exact same problem but using Finnish (I believe).
Do you have Motion? You can try doing your titles there and then export/import into FCPX.

  • I have been using Final Cut pro v6 without any problems but recently had to reinstall.  Since then I can't open and view all my Quicktime clips.  They appear white in timeline which means you can hear audio but not view picture.  Any tips?

I have been using Final Cut Pro without any problems - v6 - for ages.  I recently had a hardware issue and had to reinstall the software.  Since then I can't open most of my QT clips in my fcp project.  They appear as white clips - audio only no pictures.  There are a few QT clips you can view as regular thumbnail images and they play ok.  What's the issue?  I have fcp v6.0.6 and QT v7.  Any thoughts on what to do next?

Yes I did software updates which updated fcp to 6.0.6 and QT to version 7.7.  That's as far as updates have taken me although i have requested daily updates.  I forgot to say the clips don't play in QT view either.  Again sound but no pictures when they are played.

  • How to use Final Cut Pro with multiple user accounts?

    Hi,
I want to use Final Cut Pro on a clean user account. How do I set it up? How can I access my old FCP library and still work on it from multiple users?
Also, I want my DropBox account to back-up my media. Any tips?

I use external drives as backup. But I don't trust them. And in case of fire or what ever...It is of no use...
But I agree on your comment about DropBox. It would have been the perfect solution though.
    What else is there?
I have a 2TB HD but these projects are huge and still growing - so I have to move my projects to several external drives. So maybe I should just work directly from external drives and skip the partition of the computers main drive? I am thinking of the disadvantage of reducing the total storage of the disk.

  • I am using HD clips from an EHD in Final Cut Pro X.

Upon importing one clip to Final Cut pro, should there be 4 clips on the EHD in the Final Cut Events Folder that look like the following?
    2011-09-23 19_27_42 (id)  GET INFO says,"EHD/Final Cut Events/Analysis Files/Stabilization
    2011-09-23 19_27_42 (id).cbal  GET INFO says,"EHD/Final Cut Events/Analysis Files/Color Adjustment Files
    2011-09-23 19_27_42 (id).mov GET INFO says,"EHD/Final Cut Events/Original Media
    2011-09-23 19_27_42 (id).mov  GET INFO says,"EHD/Final Cut Events/Transcoded Media/High Quality Media
What about in Final Cut itself?  I have clips in the Event Library that look like both of these below.
    2011-09-23 19_27_42
    2011-09-23  18;55;49
I am asking this question because I have merged too different events taken of the same event on the same day with two different cameras, and when I do that I get problems with missing red clips with a yellow triangle and exclamation mark !
Even if they aren't related, if someone could explain the reason for the four types of different clips above I would appreciate it.  I realize it could be as simple as "that's what is produced on the EHD when you import clips and select the Analysis files for Color Stabilization, etc.
    Thanks, Tracy

Since I have an 8TB Pegasus EHD that is rapidly filling up to the point that its almost full, there shouldn't be any problem to go ahead and delete the Original Media Folder after I have an Optimized Folder for that same footage is that correct?
I can now use this "Optimized folder" to produce films in the Project LIbrary with music, transitions, titles, etc.?
If I wanted to be redundant ( Engineering (of a component) not strictly necessary to functioning but included in case of failure in another component) I could put all my "Original Media Folders" on a different EHD in case I had EHD failure. Do you agree?
I couldn't resist putting the definition in parentheses because I couldn't believe how perfectly it fit!!
