SUPER WEIRD: Keyboard's number keypads FREEZES Mac/Apps

Hello all.
Keyboard is the new Apple flatten wired keyboard with number pad
All was well yesterday and today I discover this while using the following apps in their most order:
Entourage
After Effects
Photoshop
Other apps like Text Edit
At first I did not notice the weird oddity, in After Effects then when I start hitting the "0" key on the numeric keypad side to do a preview, nothing happens, and worse, the whole system/application freezes, have to force quit to "release" the system from freezing.
At this point, done Repair Permissions, even reset AE's preferences etc. Zap the PRam etc.
Then in the afternoon when I was in Photoshop, I was typing some numbers and decided to edit them, and use the number keys on the right, and when I start typing the first number, same thing, the app freeze and I can't even go to Finder, everything freeze. Again I have to force quit Photoshop to "release" the system
At this point, I exchange with an older white keyboard to do a test, and the same things happen.
So I can safely rule out keyboard malfunction
I think there is a Number Lock somewhere? The 'Clear' key?? Hit it a few times, but same problems.
I tried in Text Edit again, trying to enter some numbers using the number keypad and it freezes, it's like somehow changes the command and functions of the keypad, the blinking "I" cursor stays there, and hitting the number keys move the pointer one pixel in either directions.
Very weird. The numbers above the letters with the Fn keys are fine.
I seldom use the number keypad but sometimes I do... and since this is not a keyboard problem, and seems system wide... what could be the problem??
HELP
Thanks and cheers

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks a zillion, a trillion!!
I have to really confess all these years I have been using Mac and I did not know this nor I have come across this.
Yes, I have gone inside the Universal settings and turn off Mouse keys and also uncheck the box about pressing the Opt key 5 times...
I wonder how come before this, which both the above settings must have been on, that I have never turn on or trigger this before? Must have somehow "manage" to press the Opt key 5 times consecutively.
Thanks once again! Cheers

  • Mac App Store login fails, but Apple ID/password is correct.

OK, I just went to get an App, and login failed repeatedly (5 times). In between, I went to iTunes and opened up my account info, which required login, which worked. Same on iCloud on my browser.
Now, I go back about 10 minutes later, and now suddenly the Mac App Store login works.
    Weird.

  • Computer freezes when I use the number keypad

When I use my number keypad it freezes the computer and I have to turn it off to be able to use it again.
I use a PowerMac G4 to interface with an instrument at work. Anyway, a while back I got a new Kensington wireless mouse and started having problems with the computer freezing up when I use the number keypad.
I thought it was the new mouse, but when I plugged back in the old mouse I still had the problem.
I thought maybe the keypad had gone bad on the keyboard because the light didn't illuminate when I pressed the "Num Loc" key. So, I got a new keyboard with a number keypad and it does the same thing.
I don't know what to do with it. Does anyone have any idea or suggestions to try. I'd really appreciate some help.

Hi Kim, and a warm welcome to the forums!
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Apple aluminum keyboard w/o keypad not working with Mac Mini

I'm in the process of reconfiguring our old Mac Mini to run some of our old games that no longer run on the newer Macs. We had a spare Apple aluminum keyboard (without the numeric keypad) which I thought I'd use with the Mini. The alphanumeric keys work fine, but the function keys don't seem to. (In particular, I can't get the volume keys to work.)
I've checked my keyboard settings in System Preferences. Software Update shows everything up-to-date.
The aluminum keyboard WITH the numeric keypad works fine with the Mini. Also the keyboard without the keypad works properly with my Intel iMac.
Does anyone know what's going on?

    Hi,
am I right in assuming that you are talking about the Wireless Aluminum Apple keyboard ?
If so, the 2009 version of it requires OSx Leopard 10.5.8 to work properly.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1809
The 2007 version of that keyboard requires at least OSX Tiger 10.4.10 plus this keyboard software update http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2394
Maybe downloading and apllying the update can help.

  • Help! Enter key on the Number Keypad not working on wired Apple Keyboard

Help! The enter key on the number keypad has stopped working and it's making me soooo frustrated. I've looked around my preferences and can't figure out what is going on.

I'd recommend doing a SMC reset, if this doesn't take care of it the key board may have a broken key and will need to be replaced. Here is are the instructions for a SMC reset:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Apple Wired keyboard with numeric keypad works for 10.5.6??

    Hello!
I have a iBook G4 1 Ghz 256 mb of ram. I want the apple wired keyboard
With numeric keypad. My iBook is running 10.5.6. Would this work on leopard?
I don't care if the launch pad and mission control keys don't work since I have leopard.
However, on the box it says that the minimum requirements
Is 10.6.8 but some people say it'll work.
    Please Help!!!
    Thank You So Much

ok thanks for the tip and yes i admit i didn't see that...
but it seems a little weird to have to upgrade all the OS to Snow Leopard just to use a keyboard.
That kind of new device should be configured through a driver to download...shouldn't it ?
I presume there's no keyboard driver that can solve my problem.. ?
so you confirm that if i pay for Snow Leopard and upgrade my OS, my keyword will definitely work correctly with my Mac Mini ?
    Thanks

  • Apple USB Keyboard with Numeric Keypad Problem

I just bought an apple USB keyboard with numerci keypad (aluminium) and am having problems
    1/ If i hit @ i get <
    2/ if i hit < i get @
3/ the function keys do not work : if i hit fn F11 it displays the desktop (as F11 does also), i was expecting lower volume
4/ if i hit fn F12 i get the widgets (as with F12) i was expecting higher volume

It seems my USB keyboard with numeric keypad is not recognized.
If i look at the Keyboard Visualizer (top right) it displays a keyboard that does NOT look like mine, it is smaller.

  • Number keypad not working.

I am having a weird issue. My number keypad on the keyboard is not working. I thought it was my keyboard, but when I create a new account, it works then. So it is as if I changed something accidently somewhere and now it is not working. I am using Leopard 10.5.3. Is there soemwhere I can go to re-activate the keypad?

Maybe hit the NUM Lock key by accident?
I use 3rd party keyboard; this AM my keyboard wasn't working. All I did was install Xcode 3.1 yesterday and had a very long blue screen for 4 minutes on first boot.
I had to do safe boot and go to keyboard: configure and then reboot.
    Odd.

  • Hopefully easy question: the number keypad stopped working!

OK, this is a super-minor problem, but I'm hoping that means it's an easy one to fix!
I normally rely on quickkeys or keyboard shortcuts, like in Logic when you just hit the "0" on the number keypad which takes you back to the beginning of the piece. Problem: it stopped working! Now when I hit the 0 I just get the penalty beep. I did trash my preferences earlier today, because I was having problems with a 3rd-party plugin. But I can't find a place in Preferences to enable the number keypad keys.
    Help!
    Kirby

If you trash your prefs you automatically delete your Keycommands with it so you should save/export them first before trashing the prefs. Now open the Key command menue, enter "stop" in the little Spotlight menue and reassign the "0" to the command stop.

  • Wireless keyboard refurb-numeric keypad nonfunctional

I purchased the keyboard and mouse in January of this year. For several months, the keyboard worked fine. Then, one morning, the numeric keypad not only quit working, but every time I'd push a button on that keyboard, the computer would freeze. For weeks now, I've searched for an answer. One search resulted in the information that you need to use the keyboard NUM LOCK key. Unfortunately, there is not NUM LOCK key on the wireless keyboard, so that's not overly helpful. I use the numeric keypad frequently, and would appreciate any help that anyone might offer. (Trying to get an answer directly from Apple, as you know, seems to be impossible). So, to anyone who can help, thanks in advance

    Hello Fred:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Did you purchase the KB new (warranty question)?
In any event, that behavior does not sound like software. If you are able, use the kb on another BT equipped Mac and see if it replicates (Apple stores would do this for you).

  • How do I find a previously passcode to link a wireless keyboard (Model A101urs6) to a Mac Power Book G4 running 10.5.8.  The keyboard was linked at one point in the past, but then not used.  When I am trying to hook it up now, it requires the passcode.

  • My number keypad behaves as an arrow pad

    Dear all,
For quite some time now, my number keypad has been acting as if it was an arrow pad. So when I type 4 it moves to the arrow head moves to the left and when I press 6 it moves to the right, 8 makes it move up and 2, down. It makes my applications to freeze and I have to force quit any application and my computer un-freezes. Can anybody help me with this???

It's possible that mouse keys are turned on in the Universal System Preference.
Open System Preferences and click Universal Access
    Click on the Mouse Tab
If mouse keys is on, turn it off. Also, check to see if the checkbox next to "Press the Option Keys five times...." is checked. If it is, uncheck it.

  • Weird Keyboard error.

I'm having an interening issue, well two.
Fi0rst off I am Running OS 10.5.8 and I am using a Full apple keyboard model number 2171.
Now two things, first my G5 is running a little slow, it takes a few seconds for the graphies to kick over and second, well its as if the right or down arrow key os held down, prutty much sending the cureser to the right side of the screen.
Dose anyone have any idea's on what I shouyld do?
I gave the keyboard a look over and there dosen't seem to be anything wrong, the other thing is that I pluged my mac keyboard into my Windows PC and works without the issue.

Since the keyboard works fine on another computer, you probably have a software glitch, or an internal hardware problem.

If that doesn't work, you could try:
    1) resetting the PRAM
    2) resetting the SMU
    3) running Disk Utility and Repair Permissions on your startup drive
Which exact iMac G5 model do have?  It's now several years old, and the PRAM battery might need replacing, which is an easy do-it-yourself on some models.  The iMac G5 iSight is the only model that you shouldn't do this on your own - take it to an Apple Authorized Repair facility.  The PRAM battery for all G5s is this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CR2032/
If you have your original - came with the iMac - install discs, you could restart the computer using it and use the Apple Hardware Test program, which would test the RAM, logicboard, etc., but not the keyboard.
    Good luck.

  • Why doesn't my forward delete key work on my apple keyboard with numeric keypad?

I bought a wired apple keyboard with numeric keypad to pair with my Mac Pro (late 2013) and when I try to use the forward delete key, it does nothing. I have even tried to use the fn + delete shortcut and that doesn't work either. I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.3. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Again, waking up an old thread:
I first used an air compressor, set around 50psi, to "air out" all the ports.
Then I used a clean cloth to dab a bit of alcohol on an SD card's contacts... slid it in and out several times, dabbing a little more alchol each time... and voila!
All of our SD cards now seem to work fine... recognize, read, eject...
Also used alcohol to clean the contacts on all the cards.
