Super white - proc amp - clipping - YUV to RGB

I have been investigating the issue of clipping with YUV to RGB conversions (from DV) and found that as Stu Maschwitz pointed out in DV Rebel, there are a couple of ways to save the higher dynamic range of YUV video without clipping when converting into RGB for editing and effects. The Premier Proc amp function works in YUV and does this as does the interpret footage color management tab in AE.
HOWEVER. It seems something may have broken the proc amp effect in CS5 as it no longer seems to save super white and super black values. Perhaps there is now another recommended way to save the higher dynamic range that some DV and HDV cameras will capture in YUV?
Also, there is no longer a "maximum bit depth" setting in Project settings, so maybe this is where things got broken, as in earlier versions of Premier that setting on was required for proc amp to work correctly.
I took some DV footage that has 110% signal highlights and tried to adjust it in CS5 proc amp and it was clipped. The same footage was recoverable in AE CS5 with  the interpret footage color management tab "wide Gamut RGB". This footage also is recoverable with proc amp in CS3 and CS4 Premier.
Any suggestions??
David

Hi Guys,
Without opening a new thread, I just wanted to say that I can't get ProcAmp to work on my footages. And I remember it worked in the past.
I have footage from Nex-7, D4s, GoPro Hero 3 Black. At least on the GoPro & Nex-7 footage it was easy to recover highlights. But when I try it now, I just grey out the highlights without recovering anything.
Original here:
ProcAmp applied:
Of course, Maximum Bit Depth is enabled in the sequence. I cleaned the cache, I enabled Maximum Render Quality as well, and also tried with Mercury on/off.
Any suggestions in fixing this?
Thanks a lot,
Bogdan

  • Can I apply proc amp filter to entire sequence like in Avid land?

Was up against a white sky and dark skinned people.  Of course I exposed for the skintones,
so now I'm stuck with non-broadcast safe white levels.  When in Avid land I remember being able to
create a new video track and apply the proc amp filter there.  Is this somehow possible in FCP 6?
Yes, it's for air, and yes, I know broadcasters have limiters.  Any suggestions?

Nesting the Sequence will allow you to apply a filter to eveything at once.
Another way, do one clip and adjust the filter to your taste. Right click that clip on the Timeline and copy it.
Highlight all other clips, right click and choose "Paste Attributes > Filters" That will apply the same setting to all the others and you can still tweak individual shots if they don't look quite right.

  • Conversion from YUV to RGB

    Hi,
I'm developing a video application in AIR, to run both on Iphone/Ipad and Android.
I am looking for Adobe flash built in methods and primitives to convert images from YUV411 to RGB format for display.
I imported C functions in ADOBE Alchemy to create .swc library to decompress YUV411 to RGB but I am looking for something more optimized to gain in performance.
    Any help is very welcome

    JP:
Thanks for pointing out the Floating Point option in the Internal Pixel Format pop-up menu in the User Prefs tab in Color.
According to the Color manual it says that
“Float: The highest level of image-processing quality available in Color. Float refers to the use of floating-point math to store and calculate fractional data. This means that values higher then 1 can be used to store data that would otherwise be rounded down using the integer-based 8-, 10-, 12-, and 16-bit depths. Float is an extremely processor intensive bit depth, so plan for longer rendering times.”
I assume that “storing data that would otherwise be rounded down” is what prevents luma clipping and chroma clamping.
    In other words:
    1. if I process maximum white as super-white (FCP Seq settings)
    2. then send such sequence to Color
    3. uncheck broadcast safe in the project settings tab in Color
    4. select the Floating Point option in the Internal Pixel Format
    5. Grade in Color
    6. render in Color
    7. Send back to FCP
    8. My super-whites (whether 8 or 10 bit) should not be clipped.
    Does this sound right?
In the case of RED or HDCAMSR (Dual Link), FCP will handle the video as RGB, and superwhite (at 10 bit levels, from 940 to 1019) will not be clipped, In Color, following the previous recipe, clipping or clamping should not occur either.

How would we know? You didn't tell us much. Please give your COMPLETE model and OS info as in my examples below.  And "super weird" doesn't help at all.  What exactly happens?  What is the "Proc Amp slider"?  I have two versions of Webcam software here on two different machines and I can't find such a setting.

  • Viewer shows only white when Browser clips selected?

I'm using FCP 7.0.3 on my iMac 10.8.3. I was fifteen minutes into a final edit on my project when my viewer stopped
displaying clips that I have in Browser bins. The Viewer shows only a white screen when clips are clicked. My timeline clips
display ok when clicked. In addition, I cannot see text color in the Viewer although it superimposes on the Timeline fine. I've
restarted and dumped the Library>Preferences> com.apple.RegFinalCutStudio.plist with no results. Anything else I can try without
    dumping my project?

Check to see that RGB is checked for Viewer Display settings.

  • Is there a way to remove the white background from clip art

Is there a way to remove the white background from clip art?

And replace it with what? transparency? You'll need to work in a format that supports that like png or psd. So you'll need a good editor too.

  • Can I fix the black level with the proc amp filter in FCP?

Again, trying to help my dad convert old vhs tapes to DVD. A proc amp is a bit outside his price range and probably a canopus box that handles setup is as well.
Can this problem be fixed after capture? I noticed that final cut has a proc amp filter built into it but the documentation on it is sparse at best.
If it can be fixed what settings do I need to use with the proc amp filter? Will using this filter be the same thing or will it just be "darn close"?
Is there any way I can verify it is indeed a black level problem by looking at the scopes in final cut?

i don't like the fcp proc amp filter but you could capture a bit and see if it's gonna work. i would capture a bit and apply the black level control on the 3 way color corrector and follow it all the way to dvd.
if these vhs tapes are precious and critical, why not rent a tbc and undergo a marathon capturing session?
OR! rent a dvd recorder and record direct from the vhs player and let the recorder handle everything for you.

  • YUV and RGB Formats

    Hi,
I bought a webcam recently to use with JMF. The camera can be identified by JMF Registry and shows that it supports YUV and RGB formats. However, in my code, it says that it only supports YUV. Here is the code:
    FormatControl y = (FormatControl)player.getControl("javax.media.control.FormatControl");
Format [] x = videoDevice.getFormats();So I ignored this and selected the format I was looking for anyway using the setFormat method. It compiled and ran but when i checked it, it did not accept the YUV format I chose from the list. Instead it used an RGB format. Im not sure how this can happen as the list of supported formats did not contain any RGB formats. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you expect that to set the format that the web cam is giving the camera, you're expecting that setFormat command to back-track to the DataSource that's going into the player, and if you just think about that for a second...yeah, not going to work.

  • Super White or White?

    Friends
I'm a wedding videographer and I work with the mini dv cams PD150 and VX2000... I output my edited videos only to DVD, not VHS.
What is the best option to work with the sequences (sequence settings), white or super-white ?
I read something that if I don't broadcast my footages or record it on VHS, I should work with superwhite if I keep my video in a digital format, as DVD.
    Is it right?
    Thanks to all.

  • How to switch Premiere Pro from YUV to RGB

    Hello
First of all, sorry if there are mistakes in my sentences, I'm french. (but I don't want to post in french forums, because I want to improve my english !)
I'm having some problems on Premiere Pro.
Indeed, I have many shots on After Effects that looks good...
But strangely, when I import them in Premiere, they turn into a mess : there are ugly "strips" that appears...
From what I was told, that quality loss is due to a difference between Premiere Pro and After Effects colorspaces : After Effect is RGB, as Premiere Pro is YUV.
So now, what I'm trying to do is to switch Premiere Pro from YUV to RGB.
Does anybody know how I can do this ? I looked into "Sequence Settings" and "Media" (export) windows, but unfortunately I couldn't find any form allowing me to make that change...
If someone can help me, I would be grateful to him
Thank you for your attention !
    Kind regards,
    Babada

Are you sure ? As I have written, if I export an .AVI from After Effects, the video file is perfectly clean, there is no coulour banding. But if I happen to import the .AVI file in Premiere Pro, at this moment, the PP preview will be coulour banded.
Anyway here are my After Effects export settings (just in case) :

  • Colours washed out - YUV or RGB?

I just outputted my sequence to DVD and when I play it on the TV, the colours are washed out (on the computer looks fine). My yellow subtitles are almost white (subtitles made in FCP).
It's been about six months since my last video and I suspect some sequence settings have been changed. I use a Sony MiniDV camera, import via firewire and export via Compressor to DVD, should my render colour spacing be RGB or 8 bit YUV?
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
    Cheers,

    Hey,
I had the same problem when I started to author DVDs...
DV has a 0 setup (black level) and broadcast TV is 7.5 Setup. Most DVD players have two settings in the DVD player setup menu - one for richer black (0 setup) or regular (7.5 setup). They come with regular black as default. Most people don't even know about this setting on their players.
But when you're looking at your DV sequences (even on an NTSC monitor), you're looking at the DV footage at 0 setup, with richer blacks.
Then, when you encode, burn and watch it on your DVD player, you're getting an image with 7.5 setup.
So, you will always get a discrepancy, unless you set your DVD player and your clients' to richer black, or add about 10 to 15 point of black using a Color Corrector filter inside FCP just before you encode!
I've decided to adopt the latter, since I've asked around and discovered that pretty much no one messes with that black setting in their DVD players!

  • White background in clip

I need to insert a 4:3 clip into a 16:9 project. The clip has a white background color, so I would like to fit the clip to the screen, with white added to the extra areas on the left and right. However, iMovie inserts black bars instead -- is there a way to change this color?
    Thank you!

Not in iMovie 08, as far as I know. You can do this in iMovie 09.

  • How do I remove white outline on clipping paths imported into Flash?

I have been trying to import clipping paths into Flash, but the images look fine, except for the white outline around the imported clipping paths. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do to remove this, or what I am doing wrong? The clipping path looks fine when I drop it on the same color background in Illustrator. I'm using CS2 and Flash 8. Thanks.

Check to see if a stroke being added to the vector when you bring it into Flash? If so, just delete the stroke.
