Superb 1080p rental quality on ATV 3

Just rented and watched Hugo in 1080p on the new ATV 3, and I'm so impressed with the quality. Really smooth and detailed video, fantastic colour and great audio as well. It's not as good as the best Bluray output but it's not that far away and it was ready to play in 5 seconds on my 11mb broadband. Not sure how Apple have done this but it works so well.
Photos now look excellent too and I'm sure iMovie will soon have and a new ATV 3 export option.
I'd say it's well worth selling on your ATV 2 and getting the new model.

I think playback is smoother too, you can tell there's more power running the new model.
I still can't decide wether to continue buying the occasional Bluray or just go with iTunes now.
It all depends what you can buy from iTunes I suppose.
There's an absolute dearth of 1080p or 720p HD to buy in UK from itunes store, at least in terms of movies.

    Dear friends,
Thank you for responding to my problem so promptly. Frankly, I did not expect to hear from people so soon! The fact is that as soon as I posted the question, I was shown a number of similar queries and managed to find the answer. I have to say it's not intuitive! I have an apple TV original version. Apparently I had the ATV on streaming and not syncing. Streaming does not allow you to stream a rental from your computer whereas you can sync and transfer the rental from the computer!
    Thanks again.

Apple TV has no storage, it is caching the movie and needs to load a portion before playback starts. The time it takes is dependent on your network.
What is your current connection via speedtest.net?
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)

  • Photo Quality on ATV

    Hi
Just synced my itunes photos with the ATV but the photos are not as clear as they are on my Mac.
Also in ATV when you preview the pictures before going into the folders the images are fine (i presume as they are smaller) but when you go into the folder of the relavant images the images are not clear.
is there any setting as it is a shame as my iphoto images are very goos quality.
    pls help.

It is not surprising that images are not as good on a tv as they are on a monitor, you can't expect them to be. However that being said, the pictures on the tv are really very good and if you believe they are poor either you are exceptionally critical or there is something amiss somewhere.
There are no settings for quality, but turning on ken burns effects does help, other than this I can't suggest anything else for you.

  • Do Rentals Purchased on ATV sync back to iTunes?

If so where can I find them please?

If you rent a movie from your computer, you can move it to your ATV or your compatible iPod and back, though it can only reside on one device at a time. You can't rent HD movies from your computer.
If you rent from directly from your ATV, it can't be moved anywhere else. What was new in version 2 of the software was the ability to rent movies. It is my understanding that, if you rent even SD movies from your ATV, they are of higher quality than if rented from your computer. Thus far, I've only rented HD movies from my ATV so I have no personal experience.

  • Image quality with ATV 3rd gen

Hi.  I have a 2nd gen ATV and am very happy with it.  I use it to stream movies from my iTunes library on my Mac, and occasionally from Netflix.  I recently  bought the 3rd gen ATV.  Over the weekend I used the 3rd gen ATV to stream portions of some movies from my iTunes library to see if I would notice a difference in image quality on my 47" LDC TV.  Some were better (the 1080i HD ones) than with the 2nd gen ATV, most looked about the same, but it surprised me that a few looked worse.
I don't know how to describe the ones that looked worse.  It's not an issue of pixelation.  I believe Hollywood produces films on 35mm or 70mm format, whereas TV and home movies often are on lower quality 8mm or 16mm format.  With the 3rd gen ATV, the movies that I thought looked worse seemed to have the appearance of lower quality 8mm / 16mm movies, rather than of higher quality 35mm / 70 mm movies.  The characters and images on the screen looked more plastic somehow, with less depth.  Any yes, I am talking about 2D images, not 3D.  The movies in question were purchased from the iTunes store in SD format.  They look better on my 2nd gen ATV than they do on my 3rd gen ATV.
Has anyone else had this experience?  Is there a setting I am missing somewhere on the 3rd gen ATV that might cause this affect?  Thank you

SD movies need to be scaled to fill your screen.
If your TV has a 1080 screen and your Apple TV is set to output at 1080, then your Apple TV does all the scaling.
Your Apple TV 2 has a maximum output of 720, therefore your TV had to do some of the scaling.
If your TV is significantly better than the Apple TV at scaling, this may account for what you say.

  • RE: Rentals - Desktop to ATV = white screen ??

    Hi
I rented a film onto my desk top and then transferred the film to ATV. ATV recognised the film and I made sure it had fully transferred from desktop to ATV before attempting to play. The film showed in rented movies on ATV and when I played it, It gave me the options of resume or play from start. Then when the film came on screen it had the widescreen view (i.e. letterbox) but with just a white screen beyond with no sound or image. When I scrolled through the film (pressing right on remote) some faint text appeared above timeline that changed with each click to the right - presumably showing scene title of the film as it was quite random text titles.
I'm confused as never had problem before, apple tv and itunes on desktop are up to date, accounts are authorised? It seems odd that ATV recognised everything and even began to play what looked like a film - just no sound or images
I contacted support and they allowed me to download it twice again therefore resetting the time to watch but when transferring the same problem occurred. Plays fine on desktop. Apple support also refunded me which was good of them.
Now since it has in the past worked ( I think even since I updated apple tv recently) I figured I would try again with a different rental before phoning support or doing anything like a restore to default on apple tv. However thought I'd see if anyone had had a similar problem?
    Any advice much appreciated. Thanks

On your invoice you will see a link to "report a problem". Email them the problem and they should sort you out. They didn't help me much on a technical level but they allowed me to re-download it a few times to try and get it to work. In the end they refunded me and then gave me five free song downloads for the inconvenience. Presumably you tried to re-set the ATV ?

  • Audio Streaming quality on ATV Airplay question

I'm starting to build a "modest" audiophile stereo by ripping my CD's into iTunes via Apple Lossless, wirelessly streaming them to my ATV via Airplay, and then listening to them on my high(er) end DAC and / integrated amplifier. My question is, does the ATV and iTunes stream the music "lossless" over my wireless network (i.e., at ~ 800kbps), or does it "max out" around 256kbps. I ask because I don't really hear a big difference in the sound quality between the two formats and I'm wondering if I should really be running a USB from my Mac to my stereo's DAC / integrated amp.
    Any thoughts?

Music is streamed losslessly. Specifically, whatever you are listening to, be it AAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, etc. is encoded as Apple Lossless and then streamed to the ATV.
At least I think. That's how everything has worked between iTunes and an Airport Express with AirTunes in the past (Stereophile magazine ran a test where they showed they could play an audio file via Airport Express and recover the original file's PCM data exactly from Airport Express's optical port). Things may be different with AirPlay and the new Apple TV, but I suspect it's still lossless.
I do think it maxes out at 44 or 48 kbps, 16 bit, so if you download any high resolution files, you'd want to run USB or optical to your DAC. Otherwise, unless the AirPlay implementation's changed drastically, you're fine.

  • Movie Rental quality via Composite AV cable

I jsut received the composite AV cable for my Iphone. If I rent a movie thru ITunes and download to my Iphone, what will the quality be like on a 42" HD projection TV? I have attached the Iphone and played Youtube videos on the TV and the quality is low. Hopefully the resolution with rented Itunes movies is better. Anyone experienced this yet? Thanks

I have not done the same but I did rent a movie with iTunes and transferred it to my Apple TV to watch it with my 42" HD Plasma. The quality was good but I don't believe Apple has started providing movies for rent in HD quality yet.
The rental fee isn't much so give it a go and let us know the results.

  • Syncing Rentals to Different ATV's

If I rent an HD movie on my ATV in my media room and want to finish watching it on my bedroom ATV will it show up/transfer? Is this something it will do? I know it will transfer to iphones/ipods.

Chenks is correct I believe, you can't transfer HD to portable devices nor to other AppleTVs which as you say for finsihing off in another room is a shame.
Neither of us rent as we're in the UK, but I'm pretty certain about this.

  • Once rental in iTunes, ATV takes forever to download/play

I download movie rentals or tv shows in iTunes on my computer, but Apple TV takes FOREVER to download from the shared computer! I can't watch a movie in one go-- it pauses to download and takes forever. How do I avoid this? It never used to happen! Since I can download the movies in normal time frames, the internet speed is not the issue.

  • I input 1080p high quality video - how can I get as lossless export as possible?

I am making a long documentary and I want to synch video and audio and prepare many snippets of video and put them in my library. I want to export each of them as lossless as possible. What are the optimal export settings for lossless?
    -Rodel Ituralde

Did you load the footage already? If so, what is the codec?
If not then we generally use 10 bit uncompressed & ProRes 422 (HQ)
We load with one of those codecs, have sequence settings to match, & then export QT current settings.
one issue is the files can be rather large.
last doc we worked on as 10 bit uncompressed was 400 GB for the final export (50 min)
Pro Res is said to be virtually lossless. Lots of other options, but all depends on what  codec the footage is, what your edit settings are, and what the final end use is for the project.

  • Movie rentals non-transferrable on ATV?

Movies rented on your ATV can not be transferred to multiple devices during the rental period. However, movies rented from iTunes on a computer can be transferred between multiple devices during the rental period.. Am I correct with this?
    If so, why?
I have an iPod touch, computer with iTunes, ATV. Would it behoove me to just rent through iTunes on the PC?
    From Apple's webpage
    For Computer iTune rentals:
"You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only be played on one device at a time.""
    For Rentals on the ATV:
"Movies rented on your Apple TV are not transferable to any other device and can only be viewed on your Apple TV."

HD movies rented on Apple TV require HDCP compliance. No Macs or Mac displays currently are HDCP compliant, therefore movies rented on Apple TV would not even play on a Mac.
Plus, the content providers will not allow HD files on a personal computer for copying issues.

  • ATV resolution and scaling

I'm a little confused about resolution and scaling. Currently I run my ATV through a projector which has a native resolution of 1280x720. As this exactly matches the ATV, I get a lovely picture.
I'm thinking of changing my projector for a plasma TV. Many plasma TVs are coming out in 1080i, which I think is more than I need as I will only be using it for ATV and as a 2nd monitor for my MBP. I'm also concerned about loss of image quality due to the upscaling from 720p. I'd rather get a TV that is 720p native, like my projector. However, this doesn't seem to be so simple. I've looked at a few TVs which claim to be 720p, yet all of them have a resolution of 1024x768. I understand there may be some around which are 1280x720, but all the ones within my budget seem to be 1024x768.
I would like to know how this different resolution is likely to affect my picture quality with ATV. I can see that 48 pixels can easily be lopped off to match 720, but what about the horizontal? Surely 1280 cannot be easily converted into 1024, at least not without a detrimental effect on picture quality?

I have an older Panasonic with a 1024x576 panel it's HD ready and accepts up to 1080p signals. I have a newer full 1080p Panasonic full 1920x1080 panel.
    Guess which I prefer?
The older one has picture quality that blows the other out of the water, but the main reason is I mainly watch SD stuff - I don't have an awful lot of commercial HD stuff though.
There's something about the old panel though that just looks smoother and more natural - probably a case of mature 1024x576 technology vs early 1080p technology, and poor upscaling of SD content.
I would like to know how this different resolution is likely to affect my picture quality with ATV. I can see that 48 pixels can easily be lopped off to match 720, but what about the horizontal? Don't worry about 'lopping off pixels', the 1024x576 panels are still 16:9 aspect ratio due to non-square pixel arrangements and scaling works very well with AppleTv 720p IMO.
So in some ways it may depend on what you're mainly watching, SD or HD - AppleTV should be fine with a 1024x576 panel. In general for plasmas/LCDs SD upscales quite poorly unless the sets have very good upscalers, so if you watch a lot of SD, a full HD set may give a worse subjective experience.

  • How to get best possible quality ?

    Hey whats up!
I wonder how can i get a best possible quality out of After Effects? I dont care about size , i just want best quality.
Every time i record PC gameplay then i edit a little bit on After effects , but when i render it it loses some quality and when i upload on Youtube its not even 1080p. I mean i have option in youtube to watch it in 1080p but quality is not 1080p! Any advice?
    Thanks!

At the moment, this isn't about "quality", this is about horizontal and vertical dimensions of the video, and guess what?  You don't even MENTION them! Maybe you ought to try looking up those properties of your video clips and reporting back in.....
