Superdrive 845C not recognized by my Pb G4 Ti

I recently upgraded from a combo drive (CW-8124-C) to a superdrive (UJ-845C). The new drive is absolutely not recognized by my Powerbook. Electrically the superdrive works well (spining noise), but it is not detected by the laptop. The "System Info" Application under "Hardware" / "Disk Burning" stays with the message "no hardware detected..." (*)
(* Note: all system messages below are translated from French, they may be slightly different from US messages )
It's very probable that it comes from my Powerbook : I've tried two different UJ-845C drives thanks to [www.iFixit.com] and had the same failure. I eventually mounted back my old DVD reader, and it is recognized by the "System Info" app.
What can I do to have my superdrive recognized by my laptop? Thanks

    Hey Sig,
what you say is very interesting because I could not find any table that lists compatibilities between Powerbook models and UJ model numbers. If you have any info regarding UJ-845? vs. UJ-846, I'll be very happy to create such a table.
My problem is still unsolved, and the best guess I've had so far are :
    1) either it is undocumented incompatibility between Pb Alu15' Hi-Res and UJ-845C
    2) or it is a hardware problem with my internal ribbon cable, which I'm suspicious about since my other drive is perfectly recognized
thanks for your answer, and sorry for seing it so late.

  • Superdrive is not recognized

Brand new MacBook Pro. I can't get it to recognize the superdrive. Any tips?

Well if the Superdrive is brand new take it back and get a refund. Then buy any other brand External DVD drive that connects by USB port and it will work on your Mac. It doesn't have to have the Apple name on it to work on your Mac.
If your Mac is brand new and the Superdrive you have is a few years old and originally bought to work on a Macbook Air model it might not work on the newest Mac computers. If I recall correctly those older superdrives would only work on the Air models.

  • Idvd 5-when  try  to  burn  it  says   superdrive  not  recognized

    Hi Rick:
Which burner did you install? You may need to go to the manufacturer's website and see if there is any firmware that you need to install.

  • HT1338 After install mountain lion my superdrive do not work

i facing problem after install mountain lion 10.8.2. my superdrive do not work properly , when i insert a disk to superdrive after 20-30 seconds left cd eject. if you have any solution about solve this problem , pls tell me.

After recently upgrading my mid-2010 Mac Mini from Lion to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 my superdrive stopped working. I did a clean install of Lion to a blank SSD. Then I upgraded to Mountain Lion from the App Store. Then I tried reading a Windows 7 installation DVD. Any DVD I insert in the internal superdrive is not recognized by the system and is ejected after a few seconds.
I tried cleaning the superdrive with a DVD lens cleaner. This did not fix the problem.
I tried a SMC reset. This did not fix the problem.
I tried an NVRAM/PRAM reset. This did not fix the problem.
I read on a related thread...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4150905?start=30&tstart=0
...that many Mountain Lion users have experienced the same issue.
I opened the Console to look for new messages appearing after inserting a DVD-ROM into the superdrive. No messages appeared while the superdrive whirred a few times and then ejected the DVD-ROM.
Apple have been made aware of the issue but no patch has been issued. Mountain Lion 10.8.2 is the current version with no updates available at the time of writing.
Some users with dual-boot systems have booted into Windows and their superdrive works fine. This points to a software issue with Mountain Lion. The problem appears to affect some systems and not others.
Other users have reported that their superdrive works again after downgrading to Lion or Snow Leopard.
I'm going to try booting ML into Safe Mode to see if the superdrive works. I'll then try downgrading to Lion or Snow Leopard to see if the superdrive works ok. That at least will confirm that it is a Mountain Lion upgrade related issue and not a superdrive hardware failure.
Then we will have to wait for a patch from Apple to resolve the issue so we can upgrade to ML without losing use of the optical drive!

  • Matshita UJ-857 superdrive not recognized shown by mac????????

My macbook was working fine yesterday and then today I put a cd in and it accepted but it didnt show on desktop. It then would not let me eject the disk.
I checked in system profile and under ata and disc burning it now shows nothing?? Toast and itunes also can no longer detect a drive. I can hear the drive spinning when I power up. I took the laptop apart to check connections and everything seems fine.
Ive read a lot about the superdrive 2.1 update but I got this back in July or something and had no problems and since the drive is not even shown is system I guess its not this. Anybody any ideas???
Also i dont have applecare and am out of warranty so looking for a fix myself, do I just need to replace drive?? But why would it still spin and have power if its broken??
I have already tried resetting the smc and pram (think thats what they were called).
    Thanks for any ideas

I have the same problem, it only started since I installed the latest security update and version of itunes. the first problem I encountered was that software I had installed would not open due to a shared library fault with quicktime. this was resolved by installing the latest version of quicktime.
now when I try and burn a CD it gives the message that the 'disc burner or software not found'. when I check in preferences the drive is listed under burning although it is not recognized in the system profiler.
The CD drive loads CD's though as I am able to play a video game that needs the disc inserted. any ideas on what I should do? do I have to reboot?

  • ATA Bus not recognizing Superdrive

Any help here would be appreciated. My MBP 1,1 is not recognizing the superdrive. I can hear it spin when I start up the computer, but it will not read the disk, nor will it mount it or eject it (can get a CD out using the old knife trick). If I look in system profiler, it does not recognize a dvd drive being installed at all. I can't help but think this must be a software or firmware problem, but I am up to date on all updates. I am of course out of warranty. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Gary,
Thanks. Tried that, but not success.
It will spin the drive, but not recognize it at all.
I can't figure out what to do.
Any other thoughts? I am worried that just replacing the drive won't fix the problem if it is a software issue.

  • Upgraded MacBook A1181 to 8x Superdrive, Drive Has Power But Not Recognized

    Model: MacBook A1181 Black
    OS: 10.6.4
    Other: 13", Black, 2GB Ram, 500GB HDD, 2GHz
Yesterday I upgraded my Black 2Ghz Core Duo A1181 Macbook from a 4x UJ-857-C Superdrive to an 8x GSA-810-N Superdrive because the UJ-857-C had stopped working. The replacement is a NEW Apple branded Superdrive.
After completing the hardware replacement, I booted the computer and heard the new Superdrive get power during the boot sequence, so w/o checking system profiler, I put a DVD in the drive. It accepted the disk and sounded like it was reading it, but no disk mounted.
I then checked Disk Utility and there was no disk present and in System Profiler, the drive is not recognized at all. Thus the eject button doesn't work, so the disk is stuck.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why the drive would not be picked up by the computer? I don't believe the SATA cable is faulty since the drive is receiving power, and I don't believe the drive is faulty since it accepted the disk and all sounds were normal. Is there some type of procedure I need to go through to get the MacBook to recognize the new drive?
Thanks - Any help is appreciated.

When you say "not recognized" do you mean when you look in Apple/About this Mac/More Info/Disk Burning that you see nothing?
    My entry looks like this:
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:
    Firmware Revision: BP08
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh
An appledrive shouldnt need a driver install.

  • 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 update - Superdrive not recognized

I recently did an update from 10.3.9 to 10.4 then immediately the compilation to 10.4.11
As my HD was starting to top out, I put in a previously burned backup DVD to review my last backup. It was recognized and read OK. I then put in a blank DVD to backup some files and received an error message. The disc was not recognized and did not spin up. Subsequently the eject key does not work, and a review of System Profiler indicates "No burning device was found". I'm stumped. Any help is appreciated.

Hopefully it's not some basic part of the OS Missing, or the DVD part of the Player giving up.
What does System Profiler say about the drive now?
Might try reapplying the Combo Update...

  • Mac DVD Superdrive not recognized in Encore CS5

I'm trying to burn a DVD using Encore CS5 on my new Mac Pro.  I already spoke with Apple to troubleshoot to see if it was the drive.  It was not the drive.  Therefore, there is a problem with Encore not recognizing the drive.  In the destination window in Encore, where it says "Recorder" in the build tab, it says "None Found".  Anyone know what the problem is?

Well, in the WINDOWS world some software will cause Encore to not be able to "see" a drive, so read the links below... I don't know if the same kind of thing happens in the MAC world
Things and Software to AVOID when authoring/burning a DVD
    Start --> http://forums.adobe.com/thread/608660?tstart=0
#2 here has WHY Explained http://forums.adobe.com/thread/607390
    Plus http://forums.adobe.com/thread/562941?tstart=0
Again in the Windows world, if the user can't or won't remove the offending software for some reason, the solution is to have Encore build the project to hard disk (folder or create an ISO) and then use 3rd party software to burn the folder or ISO to DVD
    Added
In fact, just go ahead and tell Encore to write the project to your hard drive and then use other software to write that output to a DVD... if that works, you know that "something" is getting in the way of Encore being able to communicate with your drive

  • Superdrive recognizing CDs but not recognizing DVD-Rs and rejects them

Within the last few weeks my superdrive will not recognize any DVD-Rs. I have tried several blanks and and a few video DVD-Rs that I read previously. My drive is not a Pioneer but is a Sony (see below). Anyone have any suggestions.
    SONY DVD RW DW-U10A:
    Firmware Revision: A43i
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 8192 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW

    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Media: No

Nick,Here's a couple of things to try:
Update to 10.4.7 (Use Apple Menu > Software Update).
Use a drive cleaning disk (The tolerances for DVDs are much tighter than CDs so dust could be the culprit).

  • External Hard Drive suddenly not recognized

I have a WD 500GB external hard drive that I use to back up my data. I only have one hard drive as I'm currently living abroad and couldn't bring a 2nd with me.
I plugged in my external last night to back up my MacBook Pro and it backed everything up. I even went into Time Machine to go back and restore a file or two and that worked without problem. I have been using this drive for about a year to back up everything on my Mac and, although sensitive, it seems to work okay.
I plugged it in this morning and nothing. My Mac will not recognize that the drive is not plugged in in Time Machine or in Finder. If I go to Apple Logo > About This Mac > More Info... > Storage tab, it just shows my internal hard drive and my CD/DVD drive. If I click on Disk Utility with the drive plugged in, it shows my Hard Drive (Macintosh HD) with two icons, one inset below the other and both in black font, and then my external hard drive has two underneath, but only the top one is black font - the one underneath is greyed out.
    It goes like this:
    250.06 GB Hitachi...
         Macintosh HD
    500.08 GB WD My Passport
         Time Machine Backups (greyed out)
    Superdrive (greyed out)
When I clicked on the 500GB one and told it to repair/verify it said the disk was working fine. I tried unplugging and replugging in the drive (it is not recognized in Finder so I could not properly eject the disk). I restarted my Mac with it unplugged and plugged it in afterward and nothing.
The HD itself is working, the light is blinking (not solid) and I can feel the hard drive spinning, but I'm at a loss as to what to do to get my Mac to recognize it again.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thank you!

I also wanted to add, when I click on the greyed out Time Machine hard drive that's listed and then click "Info", this is what it says:

  • New Pioneer DVD drive not recognized in profiler

I have used these forums many times to solve my problems so a big thanks to everyone who contributes. I've never had to actually ask a specific questions until now so here goes....
I have an e-mac running 10.3.9. My superdrive started to get flakey (not recognizing some DVD's, spitting them out, etc.). I followed all the advice here but no luck so I finally replaced the original drive with a Pioneer DVR-118. My problems still exist and the system profiler is telling me I have a Pioneer DVR-106. Did I do something wrong on the install? Shouldn't the profiler recognize the new drive?
A big thank you to anyone who can help me through this.

Since your computer's Apple Hardware Test is on a disc and the built-in optical
drive won't work, you may have to see if an external optical drive capable of
being used as a boot, is available. This of course would be a FireWire combo
type drive that can read & write DVD & CD media and boot Macs.
You may have to see if you can archive anything worth saving from that eMac
and put it on media via another computer; if the eMac can be booted into
Target Disk Mode where it is seen by another computer as a FireWire drive.
In fact, you could see (in a reverse scenario, perhaps?) if another computer's
optical drive could be used by your eMac, if a second healthy computer is
available & then boot it into FireWire Target Disk Mode to see if you can use
the optical drive in there as though it were a peripheral. - This may not work.
I've not had to really use FireWire Target Disk Mode, but do have cables,
and an externally enclosed LaCie FW HDD which is partitioned for clones.
There are times where a FireWire externally enclosed superdrive is handy.
There may be some damage on the logic board or some circuit that does the
controlling of ATA devices on one of the buses in the computer. That would
be a possible cause of the issue. If the identity of this drive can be changed
by the user before it is installed, be sure that is set correctly for use in eMacs.
{The three eMacs I've owned, had issues early on and I got rid of them in mere
days of first purchase; at considerable distance and effort by me. Then I got
an iMac which was an unholy terror to debug after an 'authorized service' ctr
did their best to kill logic boards and sell me defective store-brand RAM they
were authorized to install in a place I was not. ThreeThousand Miles and Six
Months later, I finally got my iMac back, repaired. Only because Apple told
    them to read my test notes - & just install the parts I said it originally needed.}
Do you have a second Mac nearby (presuming yes, and using it online) which
may be used to attempta further diagnostic or testing of the eMac?
Not sure if an Apple Hardware Test would be sufficient to tell the issues in
your computer; if you have a way to make use of it via external FW. Hope-
fully someone with more extensive eMac and drive experience will advise.
    Good luck & happy computing!

Hi, Jake. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It's possible that your AirPort card has fizzled out on you. AirPort card failure doesn't happen very often, but it happened to me once, and it was very frustrating.
We diagnosed what was wrong with mine by my husband swapping his AirPort card with mine. Then my iBook would connect, but his wouldn't, so we knew it was the card.
Will the iBook work on any wireless network? Do you have someone with whom you could swap cards to see if that's the problem?

Have you tried using the other USB port? If neither port works, try plugging in a USB mouse to see if it works to confirm that your USB ports aren't damaged.
Have you installed any new software? Maybe a Security Update or something similar? Sometimes that will break functionality of third-party drivers.
You may need to go to the website of the manufacturer of the USB wireless device to see if an updated driver is available.

When did you buy it, Jake?
There is a driver that was released on June 19, 2007.
    http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D9050&aid=5925&scid=0
Even if this is the one you have installed, you may want to reinstall it.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Since Jake hasn't posted in over two months, either that driver worked for him, he found the answer elsewhere, or he gave up. Since he hasn't posted back, we have no way of knowing.

Since you're running Leopard, I surmise that your iMac takes the AirPort Extreme card?
May I ask why you don't just get one of those? As I post this, the Apple Store has a refurbished one for $29.00.

I am not running Leopard... using 10.4 and I already own the product. It is suppose to work and there is no reason to purchase another unit. All I need to understand is how to make the IMac recognize the USB device or how to configure the unit. Others have stated in this and other forums that they have used this unit with success.
Thanks for address this specific issue.

Your specifications at the bottom of your post state that you're running Mac OS X 10.5.1?
You may want to post in the Internet and Networking your iMac (Flat Panel) Forum. Maybe someone there can help you out. (You've posted in the iBook G3 Forum.)

I am using a laptop to connect to the internet not the machine that I am writing about. If I could do that I would not need any help. I will check out the other forum but this thread is on topic.
    Mac OS X (10.5.1)

The information in your thread references an iBook quite a lot but the title of this post says iMac so I going to assume that you are trying to use this device with an iMac.
It is also unclear what version of the Mac OS you are using.
Let's start by stating the fact that these USB networking networking devices are not inherently supported by the Mac OS. Therefore they need drivers. These drivers are usually fragile and only work with a well defined version (or versions) of the Mac OS. Anytime that you make any upgrade to the Mac you are able to create an incompatibility with the driver and the device.
The Belkin F5D9050 does have some Mac OS drivers available at this link.
You should uninstall/remove the current driver for this device.
    Restart your iMac.
Download and install the appropriate driver for the version of Mac OS on your iMac.
    Restart your iMac.
If that doesn't work, either get the original AirPort card for the internal wireless slot in the iMac or get an Ethernet wireless adapter. An Ethernet wireless adapter requires no drivers and therefore will work with any Ethernet device.

  • Firewire ports, USB ports, and CD/DVD drive not recognized.

I have a G3 PB with 2 FW and 2USB ports. I am running 10.2.8 with 256MB RAM. Upon starting this AM, I noticed the CD that was in my CD drive was not recognized. Nothing on the desktop. I have a 120 GB LaCie external firewire drive which was not recognized either. I tried a Lexar 2 GB thumb drive in the USB port but again nothing on the desktop. Here's what I have tried without success:
1.) Several Restarts.Drives removed during start. Hooked to different ports after restart with no sign of drive on the desktop.
    2,) Resart With extensions off
    3.) Zapped the PRAM
4.) Started from Systems disk and noted both external drives seen by the startup disk but thumb drive stated that it
    wasn't mounted.
5.) Ran and fixed permissions on internal hard drive. Ran disk first aid. Restart again from internal drive would not recognize ports.
6.) Created a new user account hoping a fresh account would recognize the peripherals but no luck.
7.) Now wondering, if drives are seen by System install disk but not internal drive, is the OS askew in some way and if there are any tricks anyone knows to bring "sight to the blind"?
    G3 PB   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

How about running TechTool Deluxe (Comes on your Apple Care CD)
Also, run Repair Disk from your Install Disc one (1).
TechTool might show some things, and Repair Disk, from Disk Utilities on the install disk (1) might help repair some unknown issue.
Another also, (Try after the afore mentioned, and/or before run Disk utility to see if the thumb drives mount in the Drives column) from your App./utilities/disk utilities.
    Hope these steps help.
