Superdrive accepts DVDs but wont even read CDs?

I'm new to Mac's. Just bought it 2 days ago. It will show DVDs but when i put a CD (blank or even from the store) it just whirls it around for like 10secs then spits it out. It doesn't even show it on the desktop. Someone please help me (and explain with detail I'm new)

In the System Preference panels, there is one named CDs & DVDs
and it is possible the computer has been set to Ignore or eject blank
media of this type; since that option exists in this control panel.
System Preferences should be available in the menu beneath the
Blue Apple, and also in the Dock.
{PS: Where did you get a 'new iMac G5' in these days of Intel® iMacs?}
Good luck & happy computing!

  • DVD/CD Drive Problem: Works with DVDs, but won't Read CDs

As the title states, my laptop's CD drive will not read CDs (it is a satellite A205 by the way).  The yellow light lights up, it makes noises as if it is trying to read the CD, but just doesn't do it.  It won't show up as a CD being there when I look it up on "computer".  On the other hand, when I put a DVD in, it works no problem.  Anyone have any idea of what I could do?  I've tried uninstalling the driver on device manager and restarting the computer, thus allowing it to reinstall it, and it didn't help.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Try cleaning out the drive with compressed air and/or a lens cleaning disk.  This often times helps.
Next try booting to a Linux Live CD or some other Self Booting CD like Memtest.  If it doesn't then you know for sure that the drive itself is defective as you are taking Windows out of the equation.  If it does, then you know it's a Windows problem which will more than likely require restoring the system to it's factory out of box state using the Recovery DIsks to fix.
If the drive works with a Live CD then try going into device manager, uninstall the DVD drive, then reboot the system to have Windows automatically re-install it.  This sometimes helps as well.

  • A135-S4527 - DVD Drive won't read CDs but works with DVDs

My Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 is running Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1. It has a MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA Device DVD/CD-ROM drive (from System Information). It will not read CDs in the drive anymore. It doesn't give an error or anything. It just acts like nothing is in the drive. However, it does still read DVDs. Anyone have a fix for this?
    Thanks,

You can find drives for your A25-S207 at http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com
Many users have reported difficulties with generic replacement drives purchased on eBay.  These drives often lack the proper firmware required to operate in Toshiba notebooks.  I'd suggest buying an exact replacement from a vendor that handles Toshiba parts.

  • Drive accepts DVDs but rejects CDs

A strange thing is happening with my PowerBook. The optical drive will accept and play DVDs, and will also accept and burn blank CD-ROMs, but it spits out data CDs and music CDs after a few seconds. The drive is a Matshita CW-8122.
I've tried resetting the PMU and the PRAM as suggested by some on the boards, but to no avail. Anyone have ideas? I can't believe there is damage to the drive given that it works fine with DVDs and blank discs.

I have the exact same problem!!! It started when my hard drive crashed, and I had a new chip installed. I can still burn CD's, but it will not recognize any inserted CD's, even freshly bought/burned CD's. The DVD player does not have any problems. Does anybody have any idea how to solve this?

  • My superdrive will no longer read dvds, but it will read blank ones, whats wrong?

I hope you can help; progressivelymy superdrive has stopped reading DVDS, it reads blank ones straight away withno issues but dvds, games, movies etc it doesn’t read anymore.
It now wont read abrand new game I bought (the sims late night) and will not read the apple snow leopard disk and wont read any dvds.
It sounds like its working, no loud sounds - it sounds fine then it spits it out.

I live very far from the nearest applestore – 50 miles so it’s a hassle to haul my 27inch imac there.
    Please help!

No these forums are not moderated by employees. that's why they call them Communities, it's all Mac users.
It's also very hard to give you a straight answer just like that. This may sound stupid, but are you sure you're inserting the disk right-side-up?
You can try running the hardware test (if you can reboot from the DVD: reboot holding the C key) but if you have these issues with a Mac under Warranty, it may be best to bring it in. Check with Apple, as ther may be a certified Apple repair shop closer to you.

  • My MacBook Pro accepts the DVD but does not read it ( no icon too )- I cant eject it too!!

    Hi,
I have a MBP 8.2. My MBP accepted a DVD in but after some whirring noises, it does not show any DVD icon or read the DVD. I checked to see if i could see the icon in My diskUtility; but it isnt shown there. I opened iDVD and checked if i could open a new project,; it asks me to insert a DVD. So apparently it doesnt know there's a DVd in it.
I tried restarting while pressing the trackpad button, but it doesnt work . I think Ive tried almost all the tricks mentioned on every site. I dont want to do the Card trick as it would make my warranty void. I should also probably mention there is no emergency eject hole.
Please HELP! Is there any other way to get the CD out? . Also would upgrading to Lion help with this problem??

Have you tried to enter in Terminal (in the Utilities folder):
    drutil eject
and then press the 'return' key.
If that fails, position the MBP where gravity is your friend, shake it a bit with a vacuum cleaner engaged.
Last resort is the Apple store.
    Ciao.
Installing Lion will not solve this problem.

  • ILife 11 wont install. it wont even read the disk.

I just bought iLife 11 a few days ago and every time i put the disk in to install it this message pops up: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and it gives me the options of "Ignore" or "Eject". whats going on?
i have a MackBook (white) that i bought in 08. i just bought OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and upgraded to OS X 10.6.5. i updated everything that i had to in my Software Updates. what else do i need to do?

Are you sure your machine meets the system requirements for iLife:
    +iLife System Requirements+
+* Mac computer with an Intel processor.+
+* GarageBand Learn to Play requires an Intel-based Mac with a dual-core processor or better.+
+* AVCHD video from supported video cameras requires a Mac with an Intel Core Duo processor or better. Visit the iMovie ’11 Supported Cameras page for additional details.+
    +* 1GB of RAM.+
    +* Approximately 5GB of available disk space.+
+* DVD drive required for installation.+
    +* Display with at least 1280-by-768-pixel resolution.+
    +* Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later.+
+* 24-bit recording in GarageBand requires a Mac OS X-compatible audio interface with support for 24-bit audio. Please consult the owner’s manual or manufacturer directly for audio device specifications and compatibility.+
+* Some features and third-party services require Internet access and/or MobileMe; additional fees and terms apply. MobileMe is available to persons age 13 and older. Annual subscription fee and Internet access required. Terms of service apply.+
+* iPhoto print products are available in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and select countries in Europe and Asia Pacific.+
+* GarageBand Artist Lessons are sold separately and are available directly through the GarageBand Lesson Store in select countries.+
+* Burning DVDs requires an Apple SuperDrive or compatible third-party DVD burner.+
+* Third-party services may not be available in all languages or in all countries. Use of these services requires Internet access and may require you to accept additional terms.+
There would be a couple of possibilities:
    1. Do you have enough hard drive space? Mac OS needs at least 10 - 15% of available space at all times to operate properly. The iLife install requires 5 GB; if your hard drive capacity is 120 GB, you'd need at least 18 - 20 GB free plus the 5 GB for the install.
    2. Do you have plenty RAM? The requirements mention 1 GB, but you'd need at least twice that for the computer to run it. Without knowing your exact model, it probably maxes out at 4 GB - I'd go for that.
You'll also have very slow editing and rendering times in iMovie and iDVD with your graphics card which only has 144 MB VRAM.

  • Superdrive plays DVD, but ejects CD

My Superdrive worked perfectly until this afternoon when it started to immediately eject CD's (they load, but are ejected after a few seconds).  At the same time it continues to play DVD's without any problems.  Thinking it might be a problem with the SuperDrive I've borrowed another one but same problem occurs.  I've tried a couple of suggestions, i.e. reset NVRAM/PRAM and SMC; neither worked.  Does anyone have any other suggestions please?
    Thanks

    A question before we decide:
If you boot the MacBook into the Startup Manager (hold down the option key during startup) and then insert a CD does it spit it out? If this is the case, it is a hardware issue, no doubt. Contact Apple's tech support folks at (800) 275-2273 for service or carry the computer in to an Apple retail store or authorized service provider.
Note, after inserting the CD if it does not spit it out, don't expect it to show on the screen. Click on the hard drive to boot the computer back up normally.
If not, does this happen with all CDs? Burned music, commercial music, software install, burned data? Some further info would help here.
    Good luck.

  • Combo Drive read DVD but refuse to read CD

I have the problem that I can use the combo drive only with dvd when I try to insert a cd it will not recognise and the drive eject the cd. I have checked al kinds of cd´s and I have also tried to burn a cd but without sucess. I have also reseted the PRAM but also without sucess.
Is there´s a chance not to buy a new drive ?
The Ibook G4 800 Mhz is just 2 years old and handled with care so I can not see any fault which causes the problem.

The drive was damaged I have bought a new one. bad luck just 2 years old and not used very often. Since 8 Month I have an IMac G5 and since now I have the same problem with a superdrive but good luck because I still have warranty from Apple. It seems that the slotin drives are not the robust ones.
Does other users have the same expirience ?

  • Burned a DVD but wont play in DVD player

pretty much wat the topic says. i'm 13, i burned a few movies that i got from iTunes music store and when i popped the DVD into my DVD player i said that the playback feature was unable to be used or something like that. is there any way i can burn these to a DVD that will work in a DVD player?

I'm sorry to say, no, you can't.
Movies and TV shows purchased on iTunes can only be played on an authorized computer, or on an iPod.
The DVD that you burned is a data DVD, which is a different format than a video DVD. Burning a DVD as you did is a good idea to back up and protect your purchases, but you cannot play the DVD in a regular DVD player.
If you want to watch your purchased movies on a TV, the options are to hook up an iPod to the TV, hookup the computer to a TV, or wait for Apple's iTV product which will allow wireless streaming of video from your computer to your TV.

My ipod touch wont boot up it shows the apple logo and then blinks on and off.

    For both
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • MacBook SuperDrive Reads/Writes DVDs but not CDs

The SuperDrive on my first-gen MacBook (bought May 2006, Intel Core Duo) is acting up, but in the opposite direction of what you might expect: It can read and write DVDs, but fails on all forms of CDs: it cannot mount commercially-produced audio CDs or CD-ROMs, nor any form of CD-R (blank or previously written). It ***** them in, spins a bit, hesitates and then finally spits them out after a minute or so.
But it can read all sorts of DVDs (video and data), whether commercially stamped or home burned. And it can write to DVD-R. Pretty much the opposite of what you might expect if the lens was dirty or some other mechanical problems - since one would assume that the DVD mode would require higher tolerances than CD modes. And yes, I've used a CD lens cleaner just to be sure.
    Suggestions?

Thanks - so does that mean a SuperDrive has two different lasers, one for CD media and the other for DVDs? I guess I assumed there would just be one (for the DVD) that was downward-compatible so it could also read CDs.
I've done a lot of searching, and I've seen many cases where a drive fails to work with DVDs but still works with CDs ... but not the other way around (which is my situation).

  • IMac G4 superdrive only reads DVDs after leopard install, not CDs-- HELP

I just installed leopard on my iMac G4 and now it only reads DVDs. It will not read CDs. I tried installing iLife and Office from CDs and it does not read them. However, it will play all DVDs just fine. Leopard itself seems to work amazing, only problem so far is the CD issue.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to fix this? I would really like to be able to read CDs as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Same thing here. Superdrive keeps behaving erratically since Leopard upgrade. Doesn't burn DVDs (some error message saying it doesn't recognize the media). Managed to burn a CD only after full PMU reset but doesn't read CDs anymore (burnt a blank CD on a iMac at work and my mini says the CD is blank). Reads movie rental DVDs ok though (but I don't care, I just want it to work).
Same sort of thing happened to me last year whilst running Tiger. Apple changed the Superdrive. That very model of Superdrive is a piece of rubbish and it looks like Apple will have to change it again. Very glad I tool the 3-year Applecare warranty.
So much for the "it just works", hey?.
