SuperDrive automatically ejects blank DL DVDs (which worked before)

Hi. I'm going to repost here something I (incorrectly) posted on the iMac G4 thread (just in case it's a hardware related issue, which I don't think it is).
Anyway, I usually burn a "Bulkpaq DVD+R DL 2.4x 8.5GB" every month or so with my iMac. It's been ok until the last time I tried: the blank DVD is now automatically ejected from the computer a few seconds after I insert it.
I've read other people's threads asking about this same problem, and it is usually a media problem (testing with some other branch usually does the trick).
However, in my case, it cannot be the media (or, at least, it cannot be just the media) because I usually buy them in 25 unit packs, and all previous units from the current pack (6) worked, but now none of the remaining DL-DVDs (19 of them) do work anymore.
So... it could be that somehow the extreme hot in my room has ruined the remaining blank DL-DVDs however, since I recently upgraded from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7, I would blame the software upgrade. What do you think?
It could also be a hardware problem, but I still can burn other media (I haven't tested with other DL DVDs, but I have just burnt some CDs and single layer DVDs and they do work).
In some other thread, they have already explained me how to "revert" to 10.5.6 (basically do a fresh install on an external HD and then update up to 10.5.6), and I will try this later this week.
In the mean time, I would like to know if the "revert" process is worth the time. Mainly because the 10.5.7 changelog (here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3397) does not say anything about the SuperDrive.
Also, any other idea would be highly appreciated
Thanks.

Ups... I some how missed this other thread here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1644860&tstart=0 where they are experiencing this same problem.
Could anyone please remove my thread?
Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Some of my photos in my slide shows (which worked before) suddenly show up black. They are visible on the upper part but not on the screen. What's wrong?

Some of my pictures in my slideshows suddenly show up black. They worked before. I've tried editing to no avail; if I double click the pic in the upper bar it flashes for a nanosecond and disappears again. Since many are from the same place and only some are black, I don't know what to make of it. Help!

    Apply the fix below:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.

  • Superdrive Automatically Ejects DVDs and CDs!?!?!  HELP!!!

Can't begin to tell you how frustrating this upgrade has been (as opposed to the Tiger upgrade, which was a piece of cake).
Anyway, I'm running a 1.5 GHz, 15" PowerBook g4. I did a fresh install of Leopard from an erased HD. Other than a couple glitches, everything seems to be working OK with one major exception - my Matshita Superdrive now spits out literally every CD and DVD I try to put in! Totally bizzare. I tried holding down CMD-Opt-P-R on the reboot, rebooting to safe mode then back to regular, and no change! I thought it might have something to do with a missed driver or firmware update for my particular superdrive (Matshita DVD-R UJ-825), but everywhere else says that I probably just have a failed drive. Seems pretty odd that it would coincidentally fail at the same time I did the new OS 10.5 install, especially since I installed from an external firewire drive and .dmg image of the install DVD.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this mess???

Was there a specific reason you did not install from your built-in optical drive?
In the MBP optical drive forum, there were reports of many drives of your type that failed and were replaced by Apple. It was concluded that the drives were bad.

i got the same problem now! working fine a couple of days ago and now i cant burn any DVDs anymore. My laptop is 5 months old.. i am getting sick of this laptop, it feels like something is always broken but after awhile (approx. 1 month) an update fixes it, but to destroy something else. So, i guess i will have to wait a month or two until i can burn DVDs again...Seriously, PC Laptops are more stable than this worthless laptop.. and this user forum *** aswell.. no one from Mac reads it and there are not many solutions in here ..only complaints like my message here....

  • G5 Superdrive automatically ejects all DVDs

This problem just started a couple days ago (after successfully burning a DVD). My drive reads all types of CDs fine; blank CDs, burned CDs, and purchased CDs. But as of a couple days ago, any kind of DVD I insert is ejected, either right away or after a few seconds. There are no error warnings or messages on my computer. It's as if my Superdrive is no longer a Superdrive.
I've had a similar problem in the past, but only with blank DVDs. And in that situation, I could just retry loading the disc a couple of times and eventually it would be read by my computer. Not so now.
    Please, can anybody help?

No G5??? Well, that goes in the suggestion box....
Here's a pdf guide to installation.
Not a big project, just nice to know the fine points.
The tray cover plate is best removed for troublefree operation (standard to do with any make of drive in the G5). Before installing the drive, open the tray, and unclip the cover plate.

  • Superdrive keeps ejecting without a dvd

My iMac superdrive keeps making clicking noises as if its trying to eject a dvd even when I have not used it for a while

    Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, it's possible that the SuperDrive is damaged. Take the iMac to an Apple Store or reseller

  • SuperDrive automatically ejects some CDs

My macbook SuperDrive works great, but some discs it just won't accept. So far this has happened to 2 CDs, one was a game Sims2 Nightlife (for Windows), another Foreigner's Complete Greatest Hits.
These discs work fine in other players, but in the macbook, they eject every time you insert them, and it is not software related, because it will eject them no matter if the macbook is at the boot screen or booted into OS X or Windows. I have to use an external optical drive to get them to work on my macbook.
This does not appear to be a known problem on this website, but it appears to be a flaw with the Matshita drive, I have the first generation macbook, maybe it was fixed in the second? Does anybody know?

Hi! I'm a new "Convert" to the world of Mac. The refurbished deals for MacBook and iPod were just too good to pass up. I got a MacBook with CoreDuo Intel and a SuperDrive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857) and a 30GB iPod WHOO HOO!
So far, the adjustment has been easy except for the glitch of getting my Outlook calendar and contacts into Address Book and iCal (even THAT wasn't bad I just had to edit my CSV files so the Mac could read them). I was having a blast with all the video and sound editing abilities. As a former music major, I sit here thinking "Why didn't I do this EARLIER??" Plus, with open office and other such applications available for free... I'm financially able to afford it as well!
That was until about 3 days ago.... I have an EXTENSIVE Audio CD collection (well over 300 disks). I wanted to get it all on my iPod (hence 30 gigs). And all was going well for the first 25 disks or so.... NOW, I'm having a problem MANY here have mentioned: the drive ejects all Manufactured Audio CDs. (DVDs and data disks seem fine, as well as audio CDs I burned on my PC.)
After reading this forum, I called the Support. Talked with a really nice techie who tried everything I had already tried, to no avail. BUT, he made one "slip up". He mentioned there was a "file" on the Apple side about this issue but that he wasn't allowed to talk about it. Now, THAT makes me go, HUH?
So it appears, Apple KNOWS this is an issue and is insisting on keeping us (the customers) in the dark. As a newbie, that's upsetting, because one of the reasons why I switched was how well Apple treats their customers... but THIS! They know this is an issue and insist on not telling us? That's got me angry.
I also talked to a techie at the local Apple Store here and he said that Apple makes all their own hardware. Now, I know that's bull, because when I Google Matshita (the manufacturer of the drive) it comes up as part of Panasonic.
Anyway, I'm going to goto their site and see if there's not a software patch or something to resolve this issue. (What can I say, I'm coming from PC, I'm USED to having to solve issues on my own.)
But, I hope this helps some of you! If I find a software patch that works, I'll post the link here!

  • Is it possible to get my Mac to automatically eject all of my HD's before shutting off?

I have about five HD's plugged into my mac at all times with my iTunes library and pictures saved on to them. I want to know if there is away to get all of the programmes to quit and then for all my HD's to be ejected before the computer turns off.
The reason i ask is because when my computer was switched off my HD's remained on, and recently the one with all my pictures and music just went crazy, deleted everything and decided that self-harm was the way forward and pretty much commited suicide in about 5 minutes. i believe that it was because of the constant use of my iTunes library and the fact it never seemed to turn off.
Any help will be much appreciated!

Write an Automator action for this. Very basic:
Add the disks you want to eject to the list of the first step. The second step will eject them all. It took between 6 and 7 seconds to complete for the 3 items in the list I used to test the script.

  • DVD only works on TV.

I burned a DVD with iDVD. The DVD only works on TV but not on computer. Do you know why and how to make a DVD which works both on TV and computer?

Try making a disc image to the desktop if you haven't already. It will help us isolate the issue to your mac or the media you happened to choose. Test the image with apple's dvd player app. If it plays as expected, then use Verbatim or Maxell Dvd-R while burning at 4x or lower.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.
    Good luck.

  • IMac ejects blank DVDs only (plays DVDs, CDs and accepts blank CDs)

I see a lot of threads with a similar theme to my question - but not one that matches it, so have started a new thread.
My iMac will play commercial DVDs, DVDs I have burnt myself and commercial CDs, and will write to blank CD, but ejects blank DVDs (after 5-10 seconds of thinking about it). I have tried a range of blanks (different types and manufacturers). Does anyone have any ideas on this? I'm thinking it's a curious software issue as the superdrive is otherwise functioning perfectly.
    Thanks in advance

This issue is common and does not seem to be confined to any particular iMac model or Optical Drive brand that is used in them. Although it might help to know what iMac you have, what OS X it is running and what program(s) you are using to burn DVDs...?
    1. Try toggling your Blank DVD: Preference, from the current selection to another and then back to "Ask what to do"
    2. Try cleaning the Superdrive with a standard Lens Cleaning Kit.
Example: > Memtek 32020029479 CD and DVD Lens Cleaning Kit: Electronics
    3. Try creating either a burn folder (in Finder) or have your finished project ready to burn (in other App's) and force them to ask for a blank Disc.
    4. Then if you still can not use Blank DVDs, contact Apple Support and make arrangments for a service appointment.

  • SuperDrive Won't Recognize Sony DVD-Rs! Works With Most Other Media! ???

Just picked up a brand new spindle of Sony 4.7 GB AccuCORE DVD-Rs. The drive seems like it tries to read the disk but spits it out after a few seconds. I've burned a few TDK CD-Rs this week, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. I also tested a blank Memorex DVD-R, which loaded just fine, and burned an ISO image to it using Toast. I suspect this may be an issue with Sony's media. I noticed that it has the words "DVD-R Ver.2.1/1x-16x" printed on the disc. Does the "2.1" refer to a newer kind of DVD-R that isn't compatible with older SuperDrives? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
PS: The SuperDrive is a Matshita UJ-835E with the GAND Firmware Revision.

Here are a few links that will help you a ton. I am almost positive that your issue is in fact bad disc from the spindle/ I had the same issue with Memorex only getting or 5 good ones.

I have ALL the exact same symptoms as on my home computer.
It sure sounds to me like something on the iPod is broken. If it's under warranty then I would send it back for repair. If not, check out some of the web repair services, such as iPodResQ etc.
