Superdrive- CD stuck and it won't spin or read

I tried to re-install CS2. The cd/dvd was inserted it made some noises when inserted. It then stopped making noises. It won't respond to ejecting and it won't read.
I'm going to try the restart while holding down the trackpad key. Then i'll try use Open Firmware to eject a CD or DVD.

It's unlikely that the Genius failed to try this, but turn the machine on while holding down the trackpad button. Keep holding the button down until the drive ejects the disc, or at least until you've heard it make the typical "eject" noise two or three times. This is a hardware command to eject the disc, and it is sent to the drive and should cause the disc to be ejected before the OS even begins to load — that is, the computer doesn't have to start for the command to be executed. If the disc never pops out, there's a mechanical failure inside the CD/DVD drive, and the drive will have to be removed and replaced. Your CD can be manually removed from it during that process, if it comes to that.
But I don't think it will. Even a complete failure of the optical drive shouldn't prevent the machine from starting, so I suspect there's another hardware problem — and most likely it's the cause of the optical drive problem, not a product of it. I'll be surprised if your disc doesn't pop out, but I'll also be surprised if the machine starts afterward. I'm focusing here on getting the disc out of the drive simply because the disc may have value to you, and it's extraneous to the real problem and should be cleared out of the way.
So try the trackpad-button trick and let us know what happens, including whether or not the machine starts up properly after the CD is removed.

media browser should open a folder, but stucks, and giving an endless spinning ball. How can I reset at startup Pages?

What have you got in the folder?
It may simply be large and numerous, with possibly graphics that need to be converted like .eps, .ai, .bmp etc and it takes time to open, particularly if you don't have enough memory on a slow machine.

  • It is stuck and it won't restart.

I'm not going to put Ipod mini in the Subject because this is the Ipod mini forum.
My ipod mini is on, the backlight is on I can see the screen and everything. I can't scroll, I can't reset it either. It's on play but there's no music playing.
    So what can I do?

Try resetting while it is connected to your computer...this often helps the computer to recognise the iPod. You may have to try several times. If this doesn't help see these for ideas:

I have a 22" iMac desktop running OSX 10.6  Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command P R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? I just did a software update yesterday and have about 20GB left on my Hard drive. The last thing I did was try to install some plugin's for Pro Tools 8, but it wouldnt let me install so I restarted and now I'm screwed. Please Help!

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:

Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

    Dear John,
thank you for your prompt reply. After I sent the email, I left the wheel spinning to see if it would eventually stop. It didn't, but after a while the screen turned blue, so I decided to switch everything off with a forced shut-down. I could not restart with the OS DVDs because I am currently away from home, but fortunately everything was more or less fine after restarting. It then got stuck again, I forced it shut again, restarted again, and now it seem to work but I won't overdo it and will switch off smoothly after writing this (unless it gets stuck again). Last April I have replaced the HD, so it's now just under 6 months old. And, of course, since the crash occurred when I was abroad and had backed up just before I left, I have lost only a few days' work. Still, and I know this will make me hugely unpopular here, with my 5 previous laptops running on MS Windows I never had a problem. Which does not mean I loved the OS, or I would not have switched to Mac.
Anyway, and this is the main reason for this message, thank you very much again for your speedy intervention.

  • My Imac won't boot up. It is stuck on apple logo with spinning gear.

My Imac won't boot up. It is stuck on apple logo with spinning gear. It will not boot in safe mode, my install disc will not read and fsck wont fix it.. I can hear the hard drive spinning. So i know my drive is not bad.. Right before this happened i was low on space so i deleted a bunch of movies but for some reason i had to change my drive permissions to do so..

Is your data backed up?  If not, see these means of data recovery: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689 If it is backed up, then purchase Alsoft Disk Warrior.  Boot it using the Option key of a wired Apple keyboard.

  • Superdrive won't spin up after sleep (10.8.4)

I was forced to upgrade my OS to 10.8.4 (thanks Adobe), and now my Superdrive won't spin up after sleep (there's a disk in there). This ends up hanging all apps that would've accessed it, like Finder.  Anyone know
    --how to fix this, or
--what app I can use to at least force it to spin up (or eject)?
    Thanks.

Thanks, Grant. I've got the menu eject installed now, and we'll see what happens next time it sleeps (or sits overnight, since I've got it set to never sleep). My hunch is that the menu eject will be as unresponsive as the keyboard Eject button, since it's "offline".   ...crossing fingers...
Holding down the keyboard Eject button on startup will open it and get things working as intended, but interestingly, restarting and NOT opening it keeps it in it's unresponsive coma, even after restarting.
I've read that it was a firmware or something issue here, but I'll wait to try that until I'm not working. That's a bit out of my expertise and I don't want to risk making it unusable.
@Linc: No, it's not jammed, it's a software issue, where it works as intended until the computer goes to sleep . Then, upon waking, all apps that need to spin up the drives will hang because Superdrive doesn't spin up. (e.g. selecting "Open" in any app, or navigating in Finder. Disk Tools will sometimes see it, but bails on the Mount saying that maybe it's already in use).

Apple says that the Mac was supposed to be erased and taken back to the most recent version of OS X with which it shipped. You should not have any of the previous owner's apps. That violates the Terms of Use for Mac App Store apps.

Hello m.goo, and a warm welcome to the forums!
To eject the Disc, hold the Mouse button down, (or what passes for it on a Laptop), while powering up, if you also hold the Option key down at the same time it should eject & give you a chance to insert your install disc & wait for it to shw as a Boot option.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

Has lock rotation been accidentally enabled within the control centre? If you swipe up the screen is there a circle with a lock symbol & if so is is greyed out or white - if white it is enabled.

I have a 2 year old MacBook Pro and the superdrive has stopped working, it won't take discs in as if there is one already inside but iTunes or the dvd player doesn't recognise that there is a disc inside and if there is it can't be ejected, i have tried shutting down and restartinf while holding down the trackpad, as recommended on some forums but that has done nothing
It might be a huge coincidence but the drive was working fine before i installed lion?

Installing Lion would not cause the superdrive to stop working.  Are you unsure as to whether or no a cd/dvd is inside?  Something may be broken inside and you should consider bringing it in for service.
