SuperDrive DEAD - Local Apple dealer no help at all!!

Does anyone know where I can send a complaint to Apple about a scam that my local Apple dealer tried to pull? Seems my SuperDrive died and I needed a replacement. So, I called the local Apple dealer to see about buying a new one. So, he gets on the phone. Imagine someone from college who spent all four years doing bong hits. That's the voice he used. This is how the conversation went:
Him: Can I help you?
Me: Yes, I have a dual 1.8Ghz G5. And my superdrive has died. I was wondering if you had one in stock and if so, how much is it?
(Pregnant pause)
Him: So, what's your question?
Me: Well, like I said I need a new superdrive for my G5 and I was wondering if you had one. And how much is it?
Him: Well, your best bet is to bring the machine in and have me replace it.
Me: Ok, any idea how much that will be?
Him: Those are matched to each machine's specific serial number.
Me: HUH? If that is so, then why is it that I can order one online? The Pioneer DVR-111D is for sale all over the 'net.
Him: Only I can replace it. So, you better bring it in.
Me: Okay, so, when can you do it? And do you have any idea of the cost?
Him: That will be $129.00 plus labor costs. I used the last one yesterday. You'll have to wait until Monday.
Me: $129.00? Other World Computing has it for $56.00
Him: That's a different drive. Ours is the DVR-112.
Me: (Exasperated) Okay, well, I'll call you on Monday and maybe bring it in on Wednesday.
Him: Ok, but only I can replace it. I won't sell parts to the general public.
Me: Yeah, I get it.
So, I started phoning around. And as I figured, he was full of it! So, I called him back and asked him why he told me all this crap.
Him: Oh well, you can buy them, but you have to be certified to install them. They are machine specific.
Me: Well, I have called around and asked several different dealers about that. They all deny it's true.
Him: They aren't Apple dealers.
Me: Excuse me? Then how is it that they have entire websites dedicated to nothing but Apple?
Him: They aren't certified. They can sell it to you, but it won't work.
Me: Well, I personally think you are trying to pull a scam.
Him: Well, you can think that. I don't care. But I've got the parts and you don't.
Me: I thought you said you used the last one.
Him: No I didn't.
Me: WHAT? Just forget it.
So, I won't mention the dealers name. But it's the only dealer in the 86301 zip code.
In the meantime, I have ordered the Pioneer DVR-111D from an online dealer.
I think it will work just fine.

  • Does Apple read these posts? I'm having the same trouble connecting iphone4s to my  2012 Prius V. Apple said it was a Toyota problem. Apple needs to help us all!!!!!!!

Cannot connect new iPhone 4S to my Prius V bluetooth . Have been trying so many different fixes. Maybe if the almighty Apple read the posts, the problem could be fixed. Help!!!

    From http://www.toyota.com/entune/what-is-entune/phones.html we read:
"Android™ and Blackberry® wirelessly connect your phone to the available Entune™-equipped Toyota using Bluetooth®. The iPhone® is connected via a USB data cable."
There's clearly something different about the iPhone's bluetooth capabilities than the other two phones.  To say it's only Apple's or Toyota's problem isn't very helpful for anyone because, yes, Toyota should have designed Entune for full compatibility with iOS devices and, yes, Apple should have designed the iPhone to be at least as capable as the other phones wrt bluetooth.
I still don't know who to holler at.

  • I bought an IPhone 5 in the US last Jan. The bettery was tested problem at my local Apple Store in Shanghai, China. Must I send it to the store where I bought it or Can any Apple Store in the US help me repair it? Thank you.

Recently, my Iphone shuts down at 50%+ bettery. My local Apple Store told me that the bettery was tested problem and needs to be repaired or changed. Since the phone is still under a year warranty, I was suggested to return it to the US Apple Store for help. Please let me know if I can send it to any store in the US or the store where I bought. Also, I don't find the email receipt. Will it be a problem for repair? Your quick response will be very appreciated. Thank you.

One more question. Can it be down without the receipt? If yes, I will send the phone to US immediately before warranty expired. Thank you.

hi , i bought this phone from Dallas , TX  on 22 jun 2012 , right now I am in india .

For iphone replacement ,I went to local apple store in Pune (India). but these guys are not helping me . And they  are not ready to replace my phone .
I also tried contacting local apple employee  named " RATI KALE " , but didn’t got any positive response.
I provided them apple invoice, passport, visa details, my air ticket details. but still  they are not ready to help me . My phone details are as below :

Your warranty is only good in the US where you bought the phone. You will need to contact Apple Support in the US to arrange to return your phone to the US for repair. You should also inquire as to whether they will be able to return the phone to you in India.

  • TS5376 Help!  I can't fix or uninstall/reinstall iTunes without getting this error message: "The path \C\Users\(my name)\AppData\Local\Apple\Apple Software Update\iTunes64msi.' cannot be found."  So I can't remove iTunes.

    Here's the complete message:
"The path \C\Users\(my name)\AppData\Local\Apple\Apple Software Update\iTunes64msi.' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'iTunes64.msi' in a folder in which you can uninstall the product from iTunes."
So I'm stuck in this loop in which I can't download an update, can't remove iTunes to reinstall, and can't use iTunes currently as it shuts down at the drop of a hat.  Am I hopeless or is there a fix I can find?

  • Folder with exclamation mark... apple website is no help at all.

Hi there, I recently got an ipod nano, and it broke after 10 minutes out of the box. So i sent it away to be repaired and it came back and it worked! hooray! So i put some songs on it and tried to play them, but they all just skipped through. After some time fiddling with itunes and the ipod, the ipod basically wouldnt play any songs, i couldn't transfer anything to it or update it. So i tried to restore it, but it came up with "Firmware update falure, Disk write error". I tried the previous ipod updater version but the same message came up. I've tried resetting, restoring and doing everything to my ipod that has been suggested by apple. I have tried putting it in disk mode but that doesn't seem to help. I have reinstalled itunes and the ipod update software. I have the latest updates for my OS and basically I'm at my wits end. I've already had to send this thing away to get repaired once, don't tell me I have to send it away again..... There must be something I can do? Any ideas anyone?

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)
    http://www.kokopellimusic.us/KM_instructions.htm
Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • Unpleasant experience at a local Apple store

    Hi
I'd like to share my experience at a local Apple store. I am not sure this is the right place to initiate this but I couldn't find an email link for complaining about the Apple customer service.
My wife has a Iphone4 and she has cracked panels for both front and back side. She's been to the Apple store at Bethesda, MD and one of the staffs told her she should pay $29 for repair the front side panel and also she offered her a free phone replacement.
At that time, she didn't backup the phone. So she did a backup and visited other Apple store at Tysons Corner, VA. The staff told us we have to pay $140 something for repairs and there is no replacement policy for her phone available. That's fine. Why each Apple store has different policy? OK. That's fine.
The worse thing happened was the staff was very unkind and unprofessional. We felt like he looked down on us. Even he said why we did not fix the phone at the Bethesda store. He made fun of us saying just bring the phone to there. He kept making sneering smile on his face and talked with the other staff about the situation. They laughed at us.
I was so unpleasant and asked him to call his manager. And the manager kept saying the different policy and never mentioned about his wrong and arrogant attitude toward customer. I can't understand this situation and I strongly appeal this to Apple customer service dept.
I need to have a reasonable apologies from him and the manager which they refused to tell on the day. The address of the Apple store is
    1961 Chainbridge Road McLean, VA 22102 (703) 336-8450.
How can I report this to the customer service representative?
    Thanks.

  • Apple genius not helpful, maybe posters will answer my questions

I recently went to my local Apple Store to talk to a 'Genius' about my 80gb ipod classic that will not sync more than 200 songs before freezing. My 'Genius' asked if I had a Mac or PC at home and I said PC and without missing a beat he smugly suggested that my PC might have a 'bad driver' that corrupted either the software or hard drive of my ipod. He promptly told me that I can either buy an refurbished ipod of the same model for a discounted price or buy another, newer model with 10% off with the trade-in of my corrupted ipod then sent me off angry that I just wasted almost an hour waiting after my appointment time.
My question is in three parts. If you only want to answer one that is fine.
A.) If it was a bad driver that caused the corruption on the ipod, how can I avoid this issue in the future if I chose to purchase another Apple brand Mp3 player? Just by keeping up with driver updates and avoiding sites that might contain malware?
B.) The ipod started acting up on my last pc, which I dropped on a brick floor pretty hard and went on questionable sites on. But I've since gotten a newer model laptop pc with tons of space and the ipod is still acting the same way. There is no corrupted warning when I plug it in, it just will not sync all of my library and after syncing a couple gigs the screen changes from the 'syncing' screen to the 'connected' screen and itunes freezes. Then I cannot eject the ipod through itunes or even through the windows 'safely remove' feature. This is on the new laptop. What does this mean??! Corrupted software or hard drive??
C.) Has anyone had a positive experience with an Apple genius? My experience was very horrible and the genius was a jerk. Is this common?

From your description my first concern would be for the health of the iPod's hard drive. <hr>
    *iPod Diagnostics*
Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.
    <hr>
    Turning back to your post:
A.) While an incorrect driver/driver conflict might cause the wrong data to be written to the iPod, hence corrupting it, if you then update the drivers, remove conflicting devices etc. then it should be possible to restore the device on subsequent occasions. A USB device infecting virus is unlikely to actually disrupt the normal operation of an iPod, even if it manages to add viral code onto the device, as this code will target the Windows operating system. Obviously avoiding contact with malware and impacts with the envionment will be a "good thing" for both your computer and your iPod.
B.) Software corruption should be cured with a Restore. Hardware problems will only tend to get worse. Your symptoms & history would suggest problems with the iPod's hard drive, but hardware issues on the source drive could also produce a similar effect. If the iPod gets a clean bill of health then check the laptop's drives using the Windows disk scanning tools.
C.) I've not had any contact with Apple Geniuses but I would like to think that your experience is atypical. I've certainly heard better reports about Apple's support than say PC World.

    Hey guys,

At our local Apple store in my home country, they told him he needs to upgrade (which I agree of) but that the memory of this computer is not enough to hold the newer OS.
Please help, he does not really agree with buying a new computer just because of the versions.
Thank you, I appreciate your help.

This is what I have. Thank you so much rdr4lfe.

  • Just updated all apple products how can I get back to the page on apple tv that helps me get started with mirroring

Need to get back to home screen on apple tv to help get started with mirroring

    Ditto.
You need to look for your itunes library under Computers and select it, then music.
Music column is for web based content not local content, just to confuse everyone.

  • Repeated Superdrive failures - does Apple care?

My superdrive has failed, 8 days after expiration of the three year Apple care plan. This is a replacement drive, as the original Superdrive failed and was replaced a little more than a year ago. Another computer, an eMac purchased in July 2004, has also had to have its Superdrive replaced. Apple telephone support was completely unhelpful, because the three years of Apple Care coverage had expired. I guess I'll have to gut it up and pay for a replacement drive, but I'm more troubled by the timing of this failure (planned obsolescence?) and the fact that I've had three Superdrives fail in three years. I will someday want to replace my computer, and I've got another Apple-user headed off to college next year and I'm starting to wonder about Apple's reliability, at least for Superdrives. And yes, I know they're third-party produced, but Apple sure isn't doing much to help me. Anybody have any advice?

Wow, I'm sorry that you've had such bad luck. I have an iMac G4 1GHz with a Sony Superdrive (Sony DVD RW DW-U10A) that has also been acting up for about the past 2 years.
A year ago, I purchased a drive from Amazon.com (Marketplace) that was supposed to be a replacement. It turned out that the drive was bad so I had to send it back. When I had my machine all torn apart, my friend dusted the lens on my Sony drive. We put it all back together and it seemed to work fine. About a year later, it's started acting up again. My drive has had very light use in the 3 years that I've owned the computer. I'm sure that I've burned 5 DVDs or less and maybe a total of 10 CDs. It's doing the 'kerchunk' thing when trying to read CDs now.
I've given up and decided to take it apart again and replace the drive. I ordered a drive from this site -http://www.mcetech.com/dvdr16xdt-d.html, and also ordered memory for the factory memory slot (512MB) from this site - http://www.memoryx.net/.
I did not extend my AppleCare after my first year of ownership and always kicked myself for not doing this. I'm really sorry that your drive died 8 das after the expiration. Have you tried calling 800-SOS-APPL and explaining your situation?
I'm not sure why Apple has not addressed the problem of super drives with the flat panel iMacs. We've been talking about this on the boards for at least 2 years and I've yet to see anything in the media about this.
Sony did make my drive so I suppose that I could complain to them about the failure. I'm just tired of the whole thing, and hope that my replacement drive will fix my problems. I would also like to purchase a new Mac but I'm a bit scared off by all of the battery recalls.
Other than the super drive issue, I've been very happy with my iMac. I'd like to upgrade to 10.4 though and really need a working drive to do so.
Again, sorry to hear about your troubles. You're not alone but I don't think there is much that we can do about this.

  • My "other" file is stealing my storage space and my local apple store has no idea how to find out what is in it let alone how to clear it so I can upgrade to iOS 7. He thinks my iPad is not really deleting things but storing it here.

My "other" file is stealing my storage space and my local apple store is aware of the problem but has no idea how to view it's content or how to empty it. He thinks my deleted files are going here instead of being deleted. Raw beginner here! Need help.

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.
