SuperDrive does not read DVDs, but burns them correctly.
Here is what happens:
DVD Rom (CS4 DVD: doesn't read, OSX 10.5 DVD: reads) STRANGE...
DVD-R Video and DVD-R Rom (burned today by this MacPro with Disk Utility and Verified OK: Asks what to do - like with empty DVDs. On the iMac the same DVD video works perfectly)
CD works fine
I already reset the PRAM and NVRAM, but didn't work.
Any suggestion?
On an iMac here it works perfectly. I forgot to mention that, but I tried of course. None of the 4 DVD rom from the CS4 design premium works on the Mac Pro.
The strange thing is that the OSX install DVD works, the iLife 09 DVD works as well.
The CS4 DVD rom does not.
Another VERY strange thing is that I burned a DVD video from Disk Utility (from an iDVD img file). After the DVD was finished Disk Utility verified the burned data, everything was ok so it ejected the DVD.
I loaded the disk back in and the Finder said: Empty disk, open in finder, disk utility, etc... Then I loaded the disk in the iMac and the DVD player started to play back the DVD-R.
The system was upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, so I tried with a clean install I have on a secondary disk (I thought about broken extensions due to the upgraded OS). The problem stays the same.
This makes me think it is a problem not depending from the OS installation, but maybe from PRAM or NVRAM or other stuff on a different layer. I reset PRAM and the problem is still there.
Maybe I need to reset the firmware of the Superdrive or get some suggestion on a physical cleaning of the device, maybe it's just some dust in there...

After installing lion my superdrive does not read dvds
After the genious bar installed lion my superdrive does not read dvds. I put in the dvds and the drive churns for a bout 3 minutes and the spits out the dvds full of scratches.
I have read online that other people have had similar problems with lion.
Is there fix for this? or does anyone know if apple care covers this?Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try loading a DVD again.

Dvd drive does not read dvd but reads cd only.
my hp compaq 420 core2 duo dvd drive does not read the dvds but only reads the cds. How can i solve this problem, please help me with the correct answer.
This question was solved.
View Solution. It will likely require replacement of the drive. There is more than one laser in there: one for each function. One can go bad without the other going bad.
608141-001
Above is the part number for the DVD burner drive. I could not find one on eBay. Here is one online:
http://www.mydvddrives.com/replacement-for-hp-compaq-608141-001-sata-cd-dvdrw-dvd-ram-drive-burner-l...
Replacement is easy. Remove a single screw on the bottom and slide the old drive out and replace with the new drive. -
My DVD drive not reading DVDs, but can read some DVDs with data on it. Device manager shows no errors.
I tried to reinstall driver.
I downloaded new codec
I tried Microsoft FIX IT
Nothing worked.
Need some help.
Thank you!!
PaulHi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
Hope this helps you.

Hi there ,
my new MPB does not read DVD´s which have been burnt by others than my Computer (MBP). It alway states that the dvd is empty, which is not true.
Can anybody help or do I have use my apple care protection plan?
DVD´s that I have burnt myself work well......
Thank you very much for your help!
Oliverthank you for your reply. the problem is, that, when using any other pc than a mac, it will read the dvd.
I just connected an external transcend dvd drive with the same dvd that worked with a pc and my MBP still says "empty dvd without title" (translated from German to English).
I do not understand why it does not work with the mac....
do you have another hint?
thank you.
kind regards. -
DVD/CD rom drive reads CD's but does not read DVD's
i m having a problem in my laptop satellite c855d-s5106
my laptop's DVD ROM (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT80N) reads CDs but when I insert a DVD in it, it doesn't even recognize that there is a DVD inside. my dvd indicator light blinks for just about 8-12 seconds and when i double click to E: (DVD drive) it says please insert a disk into Drive E: Also there are no error massages.
and i 've tried many things like registry cleaning, reinstalling drivers even upgraded my windows 8 to 8.1 but the fault is same
also could anyone provide me the firmware (update file) for HL-DT-ST GT80N
any help will be appriciated
Solved!
Go to Solution.Called them and went through a BIOS reset and did not fix. One DVD-ROM will read another will not. One right out of the box in pristene condition won't read, another that has been used and has some scratches won't. Started talking a factory reset which is not an option at this time because of all the work related stuff and setup. Said she was kicking it up a level but they were all tied up and I have to call back. Case number 20140506452110.
Again, you close the door, it tries to spin up then spins down, then it tries again and spins down and nothing. In file manager the drive is shown but no disc lable and when try to open get the "please insert a disc into drive e:" message. -
IMac not reading DVDs (but will read CDs)
Hi all,
I am currently using the 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 20" iMac, about 4 months ago i had a problem with the superdrive on the imac and it would not eject a DVD i was using. It repeatedly tried to spit the DVD out every 30 seconds or so without any luck. After about 2 days it eventually spat the DVD out.
I was then hesitant to stick anything back in the drive in case the problem occured again. I then bought an external DVD drive and had no problems for the last 2/3 months or so with it until yesterday afternoon. I was trying to install the optional installs from the software that came with the iMac and it got half way through and said the disc was unreadable (which i thought was strange as its the first time the media had been out of the plastic wallet). I then thought nothing of it until early this morning when i tried to play a DVD on the external drive and it spins for about a minute and then spits the DVD out. This happens with any DVD i have tried films, to backup dvds to games and everything and nothing will read. I tried a CD this reads no problems at all.
I then tried the superdrive on the iMac and it also spits out DVDs after about a minute but will read a CD no problems at all but just not a DVD.
Does anyone have any clues to what has happened since yesterday as i used to be able to play every DVD i had on the external drive no problem. I have not installed any new software and there are no new updates to install on the OS and no firmware has been installed (all firmware is up to date).
The drives i am using are:
Matshita DVD-R UJ 85J (supedrive in the iMac)
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GP08 LU10 (external drive - its an LG GP08 drive)
Any help is greatly appreciated
Regards

12" G4/1.33 Superdrive - does it read DVD+R disks?
Hi all,
Quick check on the specs, which strangley I can't find anywhere on the web!
I have an Aluminum G4/1.33 12" with Superdrive (model Matshita UJ-825) and wanted to find out if it reads DVD+R disks. I was looking at a DVD Recorder from Philips for the TV that uses DVD+R and +RW disks, and wanted to know if movies and TV shows I burn with the Philips would be readable on my powerbook?
Thanks.
ChrisI have the same powerbook model as yours and I've tested three DVD burners with it. My Panasonic burner burns both + and - dvd's and the powerbook reads both fine. My brother-in-law has an iLo +R burner and it reads his as well. I also tested another model but I can't remember what it was(I know it wasn't a Phillips) but it only burned +R and the powerbook did not like those at all. I have not tried any RW's so I can't give an answer for those. By the way, I love my Panasonic burner, it is awesome because it burns everything +, -, R, RW. I hope this helps a little.

Superdrive won't read dvds, but will read cds?!?
My son was watching a dvd and the player quit. Then, it wouldn't read any dvd. But, it will read audio cds. I have no clue.
Hi Marcus
It sounds like the DVD drive heads have gone out of position and the drive needs to be replaced. Contact your dealer or Apple.
