Superdrive doesn't recognize DVDs

I have a new Macbook Pro with the following specifications. It reads data CDs fine, but I've tried several DVDs and I continue to get the same response in DVD Player:
"Supported Disc Not Available"
I tried the recent firmware updater, but it tells me that my computer doesn't need it and won't get me continue. Is the drive just a lemon?
I'm not sure if this is related, but the drive also makes a strange clicking sound when any disc is inserted - as if something is bending the wrong way and nearly breaking. Has any one else experienced these sounds?
Thanks!

From Mac help:
"To reset PRAM, first shut down your computer. Turn the computer back on and immediately press and hold Command-Option-P-R until you hear the startup sound for the second time.
If resetting PRAM doesn't solve the problem, then reset NVRAM. When the "To continue booting ..." message appears, type "reset-nvram" and press Return. Then type "reset-all" and press Return.
If the computer restarts, you have successfully reset the NVRAM settings."
I like the use of that word, "If" in the last sentence.
And if it does not restart?????

  • LG 4165b superdrive doesn´t recognize DVD-R space correctly..

    Hello!
i´m having a problem with my recently installed Superdrive.
here´s what´s happening: when I insert a blank DVD I get the usual Finder message asking me what to do with it. When i mount it, the finder sees it as a CD instead of a DVD and tells me i don´t have enough space on disk to burn anything... i´ve tried burning a 200mb file and it says the disk doesn´t have enough space.
It was working allright and i think the problem started after i insterted a Movie DVD and i got asked to change the DVD region...
    any thoughts?
    thanks a lot..

    Hi
All new drives have to have the region code set, it is normal for that message to come up the first time a commercial DVD is inserted. It would have no bearing on the Finder issue.
Did you run PatchBurn (search discussions if you need it, it's been linked many times) after installing the drive? It is needed for iAPP/Finder burn support in any OS prior to Tiger.
You could also try from iTunes or iPhoto to see if the media is identified any differently; also if you have Toast, I would try from there to see if it properly identifies the media; also you should include all info in your post as to type (-/+), brand, etc., of the media you are using, confirm that it is indeed DVD.
You might also try from a different User account, to determine if the issue is just in your account.

  • Latest iTunes update: computer doesn't recognize DVD drive

I updated iTunes and my computer doesn't recognize my keyboard and my DVD drive.
I was able to get the keyboard back by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
I had to do a system restore to get back the DVD drive.
I don't want to reinstall the update until I'm sure this won't happen again.

Will recognize blank sony and memorex dvd's and burn files to them, after ejecting will not recognize memorex dvd's, will recognize sony dvd's? MY SYSTEM BACK UP DISCS I BURNT TO MEMOREX DISCS CANNOT RE- INSTALL OPERATING SYSTEM. Please help my combo drive recognize and play dvd movies.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

     Peter,
I apologize for the hiatus. I tried several restore points, and reinstalled to out of the box state from the hard drive partition. Neither corrected the problem.
Out of curiosity, I installed Ubuntu operating system. The problem is duplicated, combo drive recognizes CDs does not recognize commercial DVD's. Does not recognize Microsoft office home & student 2010 installation disc, etc.
What else can I do? With the problem being duplicated with another operating system is it safe to say this is a hardware problem (the combo drive is defective?)
     Thank You,

  • Superdrive doesn't recognize some DVDs

Hi there, I'm a proud and happy owner of a 17" iMac with Superdrive - bought it three weeks ago. No problem until yesterday when the Supedrive started giving some problems with movies on DVDs (official ones, not burned). If I put a disc inside it, then it starts loading it for a minute or two, but the volume never appears on the desktop. Eject key didn't work either, so I restared tha mac and after some seconds the disc comes out - which is fine, but not the way it should work. Same problem with another disc which the mac previously recognized. The DVD was just bought so I suppose there was no fault with the disc (which worked with my DVD home player). Any suggestion? Should I ask for a replacement for the drive?

    Hello gefne99,
I would be concerned too if my SuperDrive was not recognizing some CDs and DVDs.
First, I recommend resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your iMac:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • HELP: System doesn't recognize DVDs

In the middle of watching a rented commercial movie DVD with DVD Player, it suddenly stopped and gave an error message that it didn't recognize the media type. I have watched dozens of such DVDs with my PowerBook, with no problems.
Now, no formatted DVDs are recognized at all in the SuperDrive. This includes my OS X 10.4 Install DVD, so now I can't do any Disk repairs.
    1) I tested the DVD on my wife's G4 iBook: no problems
    2) I tried other DVDs: none are recognized
    2) I checked that DVD Player's Preferences were appropriately selected
    3) I trashed those prefs, thinking corruption, re-booted, but the problem persists
    4) CDs, however, such as my MP3 CDs, ARE recognized and play just fine.
    All advice is welcome.

Carolyn's suggestion is a good place to start, but I see you said it is now happening with every DVD you use?
Are your install disks on DVD? If so is Install Disk 1 recognized on the Desktop when you insert it? If it is a DVD but isn't recognized there, do the following:
    1. Eject any disks in the computer and shut it down.
    2. Turn on the computer and immediately press and hold the Option key down. Don't let go until you see an icon for your hard drive on the screen along with two arrow buttons (one curves and the other points right).
    3. Wait for the normal arrow cursor to appear and then insert Install Disk 1. Once the disk is in the computer, click on the curving arrow button. This will cause the computer to scan for bootable disks and show them on the screen. If the Install DVD doesn't show on screen by the time the arrow cursor comes back, then you may have a faulty SuperDrive.
A couple of other things you can try:
    a. Reset the PRAM.
    b. Reset the PMU.
If your computer is still not recognizing DVDs then you'll want to have a professional take a look at it.
Out of curiousity, does it recognize CDs fine?

  • Macbook Pro doesn't recognize DVD

My MacBook Pro doesn't read some DVD's! I'm trying to install my camera's software, but the drive doesn't read the DVD! It just make some odd noises and then ejects the disc. However, it can still read discs I burned on my other Mac and it recognizes blank CD's and DVD's! Is anyone going through the same issue?

It's the DVD for Mac. And I'm having the same problem with other DVDs. The drive just recognize blank discs and discs burned on other macs.

  • Superdrive doesn't recognize blank disks

Was trying to burn some photo's to a disk today. When I inserted a blank disk into the superdrive, it would come up and ask what action to take. I would select open Finder. Then it would come back and say disk not recognized. I tried two brands of DVD's and one CD. I have used each of these in the drive before with no issue.
Then I moved the files to my MBP and burned the photo's to disk with no issue. After burning, I reinserted the disk into the iMac and it could read the disk with no issue.
Anyone seen this before and have advice before I call applecare ??

Are you by chance using a Western Digital external hard drive with your computer? I am having that same exact problem and I can't figure out what is causing it! I have reinstalled my os like 5 times and when I move my applications back I keep running into the same problem. I've tried just putting them back one at a time but I didn't run into the problem until I reboot my computer. I'm curious if my hard drive's software is what's causing the problem, because I had installed my hard drive's software about 3 days before it started doing this.

  • Dual Layer Superdrive doesn't recognize DL Discs

Not sure if there is another thread on this, I cannot find one. If so please supply me with the link.
I have a Powerbook G4 and it came with a combo drive. A while back I purchased a Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-845S Dual Layer DVD burner from Other World Computing. I never really tried using it until recently.
I am trying to back up my home movies via Backup and when I insert a DL DVD it recognizes it as a CD, not even a DVD.(The DVD's I am using came with my DL Burner) I had a certified Apple Tech install the DVD drive in my Powerbook to avoid voiding my warranty. I bought the DL DVD burner to avoid using multiple disc and to backup my movies that I bought.
Are there any driver updates or something?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Jeremy

I might have figured it out, but I am not 100% sure. I think the disc's I got w/ the DVD burner are CD-R's. I put one of them in an older laptop(w/ only a CD burner and it said it too was a CD-R disc.
Not sure if that is the problem. I am going to go buy some DL discs and try them and when I do I will post.

  • Mac Mini Doesn't Recognize DVD/CD media

I've tried most of the suggestions given on the boards, including the SMU reset, but my Mac Mini still has problems with burned CD's and trying to burn DVD's. I've tried several different brands of DVD media and the DVD's just get kicked out. On the CD side, I load a burned disc from another machine it just shows up as a blank disc. I'm running Leopard 10.5.3 on this machine. Any ideas?

The fact you're having problems with both DVDs and CDs is not a good sign, since it is more likely to mean a faulty drive than if one or other media were problematic, but the other worked OK.
Do you get any error messages when you insert a blank DVD or burn a CD?
One thing you might want to try is to use a lens cleaner on the drive since the slot loading drives are a little more prone to dirt and debris than tray loaders. Normally if a head is dirty you'd be able to work with one media but not the other, so the fact both are troublesome either means it's not a simple matter of a dirty head or that the drive is significantly contaminated.
If the lens cleaner doesn't help, I think the symptoms suggest the drive itself has problems. In that instance, it may be a loose connector, or that it needs to be replaced. If the latter, I'd normally suggest an external drive for greater flexibility and better performance - typically at a not much different price than an internal drive, but obviously not then requriring any service time of cost.

  • DVD-ROM SD-M1612 does not recognize DVD's

I tried to do a search but this search system is not very intuitive. Anyway I did find the topic "DVD-ROM SD-M1612 Does not recognize DVD's"
    I'm having the same problem.
I know the drive works, I've been using it for 5 years or so now, however long it's been out. I replaced my hard drive, reinstalled my OS and now it doesn't recognize DVD's. !!????
I've been searching all day trying to find a solution. Fireware v1004. It reads CD's just fine, but not DVD's very strange.
It also delays my boot process if a DVD is in the drive by a very long time.
Any thoughts as to what I need to update?
My motherboard is an ASUS P4TE

    Hi
Like Ivan said, its possible that the drive is defect. Such issues could appear if the lens cannot calibrate properly.
However, I have investigated a little bit in the net and fond a very interesting Toshiba site about this drive with the firmware update and device drivers.
    http://www.toshiba-europe.com/STORAGE/pft.asp?page=PFT&nav=ISH_ARC&model=SDM1612&spr_mod eltype=DVDROMHH&spr_model=SDM1612
The other possibility could be a wrong media. According to the informationa on this site, the drive cannot read the DVD + medias.
Be sure that you use the compatible DVDs.
But as mentioned above its possible that the drive has a malfunction.

  • Tecra M4 - DVD drive doesn't recognize any disk under Vista

    Hi,
after the installation of Vista my dvd drive doesn't recognize any disks !
No upgrade from XP! It was a clean Vista installation.
I found several links about the registry entries upper and lower filter this entries doesn't exist in my registry under the class CDROM.
I tested the drive under XP it works fine and recognizes everything.
Drivers are correctly installed no problems in the device manager is prompted.
So i have no idea how to get it working, seems to be a Vista problem
Could any one help me ? I'm really frustrated about this
    Thanks for your help

    Maybe this helps:
    - Remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager.
    - Then access the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    - Then reboot the notebook
But what happens exactly? What disks are not recognized?

My Mac Mini doesn't recognize my Avengers DVD--it keeps saying "Supported disc not available." I've tried other DVD's which work, but not this one. itunes and everything else has been updated to the newest versions. Help? Also...It doesn't recognize the digital copy DVD.

I have ALL the exact same symptoms as on my home computer.
It sure sounds to me like something on the iPod is broken. If it's under warranty then I would send it back for repair. If not, check out some of the web repair services, such as iPodResQ etc.

  • DVD Drive Doesn't recognize Media Disc

I have an Envy dv7. Product # B6B75AV. DVD drive hpBD MLT UJ260
I have a program that will copy a dvd from the source, dvd drive #1, to the target same dvd drive #1.
When it is done copying the disc it ejects the original and asks to have a writable media disc inserted.
When I insert the DVD  the drive doesn't recognize the blank dvd, keeps asking for it, and when I put it in, it spits back out saying to insert a writable disc.  I have used the blank DVD+R for burning other things so it should work.  I tired putting in 4 different blank discs to make sure the disc was ok.
Is there anyway to find out for sure whether this DVD writer uses DVD+R or DVD-R?
    Any help will be appreciated.

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!
