What do people think of these drives? I wanna stick one in my powerbook.
They look perfect and the seller seems very reputable as he has lots of sales and everyone seems very happy.

Good Day Prvt. Donut,
(What do people think of these drives? I wanna stick one in my powerbook.)
I just wanted to tell you that I have used various superdrives in my Pismo's, my Titaniums, and my Aluminum PowerBook.
I have never experienced any problems with them except for the delicate faceplate when installed in the Pismos.
I always used Patchburn 3, and later Patchburn 4 for Tiger. I have never had to make any modifications to get them to burn
just about any media that I wanted to use, and with Patchburn they C Boot as if they are the original
optical drive in each unit. The only units that I am not sure if they will fit is the earliest G4 Titaniums like the 400 & 500MHz.

  • New Superdrive for an older 550 PowerBook

I was just wondering if anyone would be able to help me out with the installation of a new superdrive the did not come with a ribbon or mounting bracket for a 550 G4 PowerBook. Does anyone know exactly what I would need and maybe where I would be able to get them?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Cheers,
    Sascha

Hi again. The DVD drive in your 550 is of an all one piece design. If you were crafty enough you could rip the inerds out of it and with some cutting, drilling and tapping you might be able to get it to fit and work right. However you might just save yourself some time and hassle by getting the mounting kit. powerbookguy.com has the kit for $69.00. It called:
"Mounting Bracket and Flex Cable for Combo or Super Drive Upgrades for PowerBook G4 Titanium 400/500 & Gigabit Ethernet 550/667 (new) - $69.95
I think it's pretty expensive, but if you were to buy the brackets, ribbon cable and drive as a package it's like $200.

  • Good Asking Price for Powerbook G4??

What is a good asking price for my 15" PowerBook G4. It is in great shape with no dents and only two minor scratches on the bottom of the case. It has AppleCare until January 1st 2009. Here are the specs...
    1.67ghz PowerPC Processor
    1GB DDR2 RAM (1-SODIMM)
    100GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
    SuperDrive DL
    High Resolution Screen (1440x960)
    Leopard 10.5.1
I have all the original packaging/accessories. I thought about asking $900, but those who know tech, I just wanted to get your opinion to see if this price was a little high or not?
It will just come with iLife 06 and Pages 06.

If I were a buyer, I'd offer $700 to start. But since this is not eBay or Craigslist, and we're supposed to offer tech support, I'd say you're right at the ballpark.
That could fetch even close to $1100. (I'll buy it from you for $700... ha ha ha).
Go to eBay and search for: PowerBook G4 15 1.67
This will give you an idea of what to price yours, wherever you decide to sell it at. Check the specs differences. Some sell theirs with less or more RAM, some higher speed/capacity drives, etc.

  • Should I get "The Invisible Shield for PowerBook"?

Hi, has anyone bought the Invisible shield for PowerBooks? I wanted to get one to help protect my PowerBook palm rest area and clicker from pitting/scratches (my other PowerBook started to pit after about a year). Is it as invisible on the PowerBook as it is on an iPod? Would you'll recommend "The Invisible Shield" for PowerBooks? Thanks in advance for any help!

I use the Marware Protection Pack from http://www.marware.com
It has an adhesive wrist area protector that looks really slick and is comfortable to use. It also comes with a screen cloth and a keyboard cover to protect the screen from the keys. All for 20.00.

  • How can I buy an new Superdrive for my mac pro without having to take my computer to a apple store?????

I have a Mac Pro and my optical drive is not working anymore. Thus, I went to the online store to buy another one.
Surprisingly, the only one I found was the macbook air (external) superdive.
I did not buy it online on that day. However, I went to the Apple Retail Store in Sydney to buy another external hard drive and asked to one of the costumer supports in red if the "macbook air" superdrive would work in any mac. The answer: YES!!! So, I got one. When I was paying the products I asked to the other "red mac guy" the same question... Again, the answer was YES!!!
So... Do these costumer support guys have any training. It is written in the box that requires a macbook air... That's why I asked for two different guys!!! Why did they say YES???
Ok! Lets not put the fault on the red guys... So I ask Apple:
Why apple does not make a external superdrive for pros?? Or one that works for all macs!!
    or simply
Why can't we buy internal superdrives anymore? Neither the online store or the retail store sell them anymore!!!
How do I solve my problem? I have to waste my time, making an appointment and taking my Mac Pro to a apple store and wait untill all iphone user in the line learn how to send their photos to their facebook??
It is really strange how apple is leaving the pro costumers behind to become a ipad and iphone industry!
Let do not forget that mac only is where it is now becouse of the pros who made it name and did not leave it die.

You know you don't have to buy a replacement dvd drive from apple.  For example, take a look at OWC's selection.
You don't say what year your mac pro is so I use a 2008 as an example.  On that page click the little picture that shows a 2008 mac pro.  That will take you to this page.  And there's an example of a Lite-On drive.
In addition, on the right side of that page are links to instructional videos on how to add the drive to your machine.  Click, for example, Optical, med (medium) and you will see how straight forward it is to change the optical drive.

  • I can't burn a dvd using any method, Idvd tells me that my super drive is missing, dvd studio pro quits when i click burn and disk utility keeps spitting the disk out when i click burn and enter the disk??? how do i repair my superdrive for imac

I can't burn a dvd using any method, idvd tells me that my super drive is missing, dvd studio pro quits when i click burn and disk utility keeps spitting the disk out when I click burn and enter the disk??? how do i repair my superdrive for imac, or how do I do whatever I need to do to get it working: I have already tried using a lens cleaning cd and also restored my nvram or something i forget what it was called but i restarted my computer holding down  command+optoion+p+r and still nothing???
Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

  • I have a DVD-Rom and DVD-Video card for Powerbook and need advice

I acquired 2 accessory components for a G3 series powerbook. I have a dual G4 so have no use for them. There is a M4743 DVD-Rom for Powerbook and a DVD-Video PC card for G3 series Powerbook family M5163. There is also a software CD. I would like to sell them but I really don’t how to explain what this stuff does. I tried Ebay and did not find any matches. Does this make a DVD upgrade for a particular Powerbook? Is something else required? Is Ebay the best place to sell? Any idea what this stuff is worth? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Bob

    Robert,
You apparently have the DVD Video Player Kit for the Powerbook G3 Series "Wallstreet" M4753.
    This is the DVD-ROM module:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/customer/product.php?productid=16219&cat=26 6&page=1
This is the DVD Decoder PC card:
    http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=296&cat=&page=1
The above DVD PC card is not Apple's but there were two third-party vendors who also offered a DVD kit...VST and MCE. They all served the same purpose and will all be priced similarly.
Both PC card and optical drive are required to play DVD movies on the Wallstreet, plus Apple DVD Player is only supported when booted to 9.x, not 10.x.
I really cannot give you a fair price to ask; the above hardware prices are probably high but you will get an idea.

  • Alternatives to Apple superdrive for Macbook Air?

I am looking for a cheaper more reliable alternative to the Apple Superdrive for my Macbook Air. I am using the Superdrive in an equipment van, meaning it breaks all the time. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

This one is only $32, I have it and its well made, and works on Mac

  • Need 1GB RAM for Powerbook 1.67

I am looking for a 1GB RAM. Is there any recommendation?
I called the Apple store, they have it instock, but the price is $300. I tried to ask them what brand, but they had no idea. They said it's "made for Powerbook"
Also found a Kingston on eBay (KTA-PBG4333), and the price is pretty reasonable--almost half of what Apple sells, and comes with a lifetime warranty.
Is anyone using Kingston? Is it reliable and anyone recommend it?

Do also be aware that at least numerous of the hi-res Aluminums have really finicky memory slots and pretty much require the "factory original" Samsung's. When I first upgraded mine I got the 1GB OWC, which kept freezing my machine; sent it back for another 1GB, which couldn't be recognized; and finally sent it back to them and got the Samsung, which has run flawlessly. They tested the chips I sent back and they worked fine-- just not in this machine... (My uncle's does the exact same thing-- and based on the threads, a bunch of other people's too).
Thus, whoever you get it from, make sure they've got good customer support. In the event yours is one of the ones who need the "factory original" RAM, you'll want good people!

  • Spare parts for powerbook G3

The screen of my powerbook G3 is severely damaged by accident. So I contacted my nearest Apple reseller to find out that there are no spare parts any more for this "old" machine. I just would like to know if this a local problem or are the new G3 parts sold out worldwide ?

New parts are no longer available.
But there are folks who have discovered the "large chunks" you can quickly separate a computer into are worth more as parts than as complete systems. Complete screen unit for powerBook G3 is a commonly-available part. There are three different ones for the WallStreet PowerBook alone.
eBay is one place where some of those parts are available. Tested parts with a modest warranty are available from online sellers and repairers of iBooks and Powerbooks with their own web sites. Full repair service with warranty is also available.

  • Can I use "SuperDrive for MacBook Air" with my Macbook 13"?

My Optical Drive from my Macbook is dead. I tried to repair it but it is far too expensive. My question is: can I use a 'Superdrive for Macbook Air' (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC684ZM/A#overview) as an external optical drive for my old Macbook 13" (bought in 2008)?
    Thank for your help

No, it only works on Macs that lack an internal optical drive (MacBook Air and Mac Mini).

  • MacBookPro with unsupported Superdrive for iDVD?

    Q. Why would a MacBookPro have an unsupported Superdrive for iDVD?
    A. If it's a MacBookPro, it shouldn't.
Yet that's the error message that comes up when iDVD is opened.
We've only used the burner for CDs so far . . .
    Q. What do you see about your disc drive when you:
Under the 'Blue Apple' at top left select About this Mac>More Info...>ATA?
    A. ATA Bus: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857:
but under Disc Burning it says
"No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly."
    THX

I'm having the same problem - unsupported superdrive for iDVD. I've burnt a data DVD in itunes without a problem but I get the same message when I open iDVD and no option to burn a project.
Has anyone found the answer to this?

I never tried the last, 'cos I bought this laptop a second-hand with Leopard on it already.
So, I'd like to know more what of the OS is better for Powerbook G4 (concerning productivity, speed, usability etc.)?

Make sure you use a 10.5.6 retail or older 10.5.4, 10.5.1, or 10.5.0 retail if installing 10.5.
Note that Mac will not boot into 9, and will lose access to Classic under the Mac OS X 10.5 boot.  For more on updating to 10.5 including the retail disc description, see this tip:
