Superdrive is too tight!

Hey guys
I seem to be having some trouble with my superdrive and before I call apple or try to find an authorised service centre (anybody know of any good ones near glasgow?) I thought I would run it by you guys to see if it really is a problem.
Basically the superdrive seems to have some trouble inserting/ejecting discs some of the time. When I try to insert a disc the edge nearest the back of the macbook is very tight. So much so that the disc tends to stick and rotate in towards the front rather than going straight in centrally (if you see what I mean ). When I try to eject it usually doesnt eject as much as normal but its enough for me to pull it out. To fix this I usually partially insert a disc and press down lightly towards the back of the macbook where it is sticky. This frees up the mechanism and the discs will go in/come out normally (well what I believe is normal as this is my first mac). I have had my macbook since the begining of June and it has really only occured twice. Most other times the drive is fine.
So is it normal for the drive to be "tighter" at one side (maybe this is how it grabs the disc?) or should I have it looked at? Im slightly disappointed its my first mac and I want it to be perfect (i can live with the occasional mooing).
cheers
Graham

Are the disc's you're inserting dual layered? When I
insert a dual layer disc my drive won't even read the
disc. It just holds it for a couple of seconds and
then ejects it back out. You have to have a special
dual layer slot drive to read them (which does not
come with the MacBook, you have to go Pro for that
option). I say this because you said that it only
happens to you some of the time.

The only time a dual-layer disc should NOT work on a superdrive is if it a blank disc. Preburned ones however, will work fine. Same with the Combo drive. Sounds like both of you might want to have your drives looked at and adjusted as needed.

First - My computer is normally rock solid with no problems.
I turned my computer on today and it would not even boot to the BIOS.
It was if there was no power going into it but then it started to boot for about 1 second
then died. I tried again and the same thing kept happening.
I opened it up, checked the Main Board, reseated the graphics card and power cables.
This time it booted but before the bios kicked in it gave the following message:
    'DRAM is wound too tight'.
I have not changed anything in the BIOS as I would not know what to change but
it then booted to the BIOS and under the power settings it says the following:
    Dynamic Over Clocking       = Private
    Performance Mode            = Slow

    thanks for the replys everyone.
I take it then that my problem is the PSU?
I am shocked that you rate the Q-Tec one so badly, it is the one that was supplied
with my computer and has worked with out a problem for about 3 years or so now.
I cant take a chance with it so its going in the bin.
Having done some checking I have located a trusted stockest who has
Corsair VX 550W ATX Power Supply (CMPSU-550VXUK) [CMPSU-550VXUK]
    or
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK) [CMPSU-650TXUK]
for just ubder £80 in the UK.
Are either of these any good and is one better for me than the other considering what
main board I have. Also the new CPU has got to fit in my computer case so its physical size must match the old one.
I am not a modder so this is all a bit alien to me so any tips or hints much appreciated.

  • DRAM timing too tightly - reload timing

    Hi
I've been through all previous threads on this subject, but cannot find a solution suitable for myself.
I'd been using my pc without problems for several weeks until last night when it failed to boot up, hanging on the pre-BIOS screen. I rebooted and got the message "DRAM is too tightly so reload timing". It then hangs again when a key is pressed and I'm unable to boot in Safe Mode.
I've definitely not altered any settings and not overclocked, so can't see why this is suddenly happening.
    Any ideas?

A couple days ago my computer starting doing the same thing.  I am not at it currently so I can't get the required specs.
The first time I just started to transfer a CD onto my harddrive and my computer auto rebooted.  Didn't see any odd messages so I just let it reboot.  I restarted all apps I had running and started the CD transfer again and it rebooted.  This time I saw the "Dram timing too tightly loaded" message in the bios.  I went and checked my bios settings and they seemed to be ok.  DRAM set to auto, DDR timing set to "By SPD" and DDR voltage 2.5V.  I did bump the DDR voltage up to 2.7V but I am still getting the same message.
I tried changing all these setting to what other threads have been recommending but still didn't work.

  • PBook G4 not closing - clutch too tight?

I recently replaced the heatsink/fan assembly on a Powerbook G4 using step by step instructions from a reputable website. I had no problem with the deconstruction of the powerbook, but when putting things back together, I've run into a problem with the hinge. It's as though there is something impeding the closure of the powerbook, but I don't see anything. When you look at the clutch on the powerbook as it closes, it appears that the right side is trying to lift up out of the case. Any ideas as to what could be wrong with this? Thanks.

I found the solution - it was the fact that the hinge assembly was fastened too tightly. It wasn't the clutch, but the other piece holding the hinge to the frame. By loosening those four screws, I was able to get the PB to close again. I wanted to make sure I answered this to ensure that others might be able to find a solution to this if they ran into this problem. Thanks!

  • Lightning port too tight - is that normal?

I'm satisfied with my iPad Air, but I've noticed one thing that bothers me - a lot. When I insert the lightning connector, it seems way too tight. I have to jam it in much harder than with the iPad Mini.
This is a new unit. Should I demand a replacement? Am I doing something wrong?

Both pieces of advice make sense.
However, my iPad Mini and iPad 4 use the Lightning connector easily; the iPad Air almost needs a wrench. I'm still in the first days of ownership, and I can only imagine how many connectors I'll damage over time. I'll demand an exchange - or, if possible, a fix.

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] DRAM Timing is too tightly, Press any key to reset DRAM timing

    hello,
    i need some help.
I have been using this system for 1 year and 4 months now. A few days ago, when I booted up my computer, the message "DRAM timing is too tightly. Press any key or DEL to reset DRAM timing." appeared before it started detecting hard drive and CD-ROMS. I pressed a key and the computer continued as normal.
This morning, the problem got worse. I started my PC but my screen remained blank. The HDD light and CD-ROM light came on but the power light remained off. I turned off the PC by holding the power switch. When i turned it on again, it was the same situation but the power light started blinking. I turned off the PSU power from my wall socket and waitied about 1 minute. I turned it on again and the power light started blinking again but slower this time. I repeated the on/off steps by using the power button 2-3times. Finally, I tried pressing a few keys on my keyboard and the power light stopped blinking and remained green. I turned the PC on/off again and this time, it succeded in booting up.
And the DRAM messge appeared again.
I was like trying to start a car on a cold day... only after turning the key a few times did the engine start....
I've no idea what is happening here.

  • New DM1-4010 E-450 - USB slots on right side too tight

Just got a new DM1-4010 E-450.  Loving it so far but the usb ports on the right side are super tight.  I tried plugging in my wireless mouse receiver and it just wouldn't go in (didn't force it).  The left side slot fits fine.  When I look inside the socket, the wafers on the right are visibly a bit thicker than the other side.  I didn't try any other usb peripherals so I don't know if they will be any better.  My only thought was that maybe there is a thickness difference between powered and non powered sockets but I don't ever remember having this problem before.  Any info would be helpful.
    Thanks

I just received my DM1 and have the exact same problem - ports on the right are too tight, the one on the left is fine. Did you find any solution?

  • RMBP hinge became way too tight

My Retina macbook pro 13" (late 2013) was somehow damaged, I believe, because the hinge became too tight. It made cracking noise if I let the screen keep position for even a few seconds and then moved it. Out of stupidity, I sprayed some WD-40 into the slots between plastic clutch and aluminium so that it would reach the hinge. But this made the situation much worse! Now I can't open my Macbook with 1 hand, and the effort required is so big I'm afraid to bend the screen eventually.
    What do I do?

Bad move.  You may have permanently damaged it, and it is not likely to be covered by AppleCare.  Should have just taken it into service without putting WD40 on it.  Also if it has too much give, you could in theory end up fraying the cables going through it.   I've heard of way too many people ending up with damaged inverter cables and solid lines crisscrossing the screen.

  • MSI 875P FISR - 'DRAM timing is too tightly so reload timing'

'DRAM timing is too tightly so reload timing'
I recently got this message upon bootup.  I have an MSI 875 P and I have 2 Gigs of Kingston RAM. I am wondering what would cause this message to come up out of nowhere.  I was had the DRAM Timing by SPD Enabled and since that didn't seem to work I disabled it.  I set the CAS, RAS, and CAS to RAS to 3 - 3 - 3 respectivly as listed below on the manufacturers web page located at:
    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/partsinfo.asp?ktcpartno=KVR400X64C3AK2/2G
    My Current Settings Are:
    CAS# Latency - 3 Clocks
    RAS# Precharge - 3 Clocks
    RAS# to CAS# Delay - 3 Clocks
    Precharge Delay - 8 Clocks
    Burst Lenght - 4

    Configure DRAM Timing by SPD
Selects whether DRAM timing is controlled by the SPD (Serial Presence
Detect) EEPROM on the DRAM module. Setting to Enabled enables the
following fields automatically to be determined by BIOS based on the
configurations on the SPD. Selecting Disabled allows users to configure
    these fields manually.
    DRAM CAS# Latency
This controls the timing delay (in clock cycles) before SDRAM starts
a read command after receiving it. Settings: 2, 2.5 (clocks). 2 (clocks)
increases the system performance the most while 2.5 (clocks) provides
    the most stable performance.
    DRAM RAS# Precharge
This item controls the number of cycles for Row Address Strobe
(RAS) to be allowed to precharge. If insufficient time is allowed for
the RAS to accumulate its charge before DRAM refresh, refreshing
may be incomplete and DRAM may fail to retain data. This item applies
only when synchronous DRAM is installed in the system. Available
    settings: 2 clocks, 3 clocks, 4 clocks.
    DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay
When DRAM is refreshed, both rows and columns are addressed
separately. This setup item allows you to determine the timing of the
transition from RAS (row address strobe) to CAS (column address
strobe). The less the clock cycles, the faster the DRAM performance.
Setting options: 2 clocks, 3 clocks, 4 clocks.
    DRAM Precharge Delay
This setting controls the precharge delay, which determines the timing
delay for DRAM precharge. Settings: 5 clocks, 6 clocks, 7 clocks, 8
    clocks.
    DRAM Burst Length
This setting allows you to set the size of Burst-Length for DRAM.
Bursting feature is a technique that DRAM itself predicts the address
of the next memory location to be accessed after the first address is
accessed. To use the feature, you need to define the burst length,
which is the actual length of burst plus the starting address and
allows internal address counter to properly generate the next memory
location. The bigger the size, the faster the DRAM performance.
    Available settings: 4, 8.
    DRAM Integrity Mode
Select ECC (Error-Checking & Correcting Code) or Disabled according
to the type of DRAM installed.
I am wondering if something else could be interfearing with the ram such as the AGP slot/card or if this is strictly a RAM issue.  I have not seen this message before.  Are my current settings what they should be for this RAM?  Should I be asking Kingston this instead of coming here?

    Thanks for the response.
My current DDR Power Voltage is set to 2.70.
Do you think 2.75 would be better?  I'm wondering why you suggest 2.7 or 2.75, now that I look at the RAM specs it actually says 2.6 as posted above.  I am not trying to be a jerk, I am just curious and want to know more!
My AGP Power Voltage is set to 1.50.  I have a BFG Geforce 6800 GT OC 256 MB.  I'm wondering if changing this a bit might help my graphics card as well? Perhaps 1.55 or 1.60V?

  • Is your superdrive making too much noise?

i'm just a bit concern when i play dvd on my new powerbook, it is making too much noise. sometimes it fails to play the dvd because of scratches(which i can't see it at all). my computer would stuck at the same image for about 3 minutes or more and i have to force the computer to shut down by holding the startup button. there are times when it would not eject the dvd out as well. any opinions? just quite frustrated. thanks

I am suffering from part of the problems you mentioned.
The SD itself is not noisy when DVD are playing.
But after pausing the movie, then it fails to resume with really strange noises (as if the head was "bumping" on the disk). Then I cannot eject the disk (the drive will apparently loop on noisy attemps to resume), and I have to reboot the PB.
I am also suffering for very frequent "disk rejection" (disk ejected after load without it appearing on the Finder), not only with DVDs, but also with regular Audio CDs (including clean unscratched ones)

  • Validation too tight to mention. How to allow CRLF in a retricted textfield

    Hi Folks.
Here's a brain teaser for you.
I have a text field that I have a validation on to only allow the following characters...
    abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789/-:().,'+
    and a whitespace.
I would also like to allow a CRLF Carriage Return Line Feed as well.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
At the moment if I enter the following
    AAA
    BBB
The validation will fail due to the CRLF.
If I enter AAABBB or AAA BBB then the validation will pass.
    Many thanks

It is actually simple, I did it accidently.
    Instead of

    Put a hard return in.

  • In pages online, the type is too tight. Letter spacing? Tracking?

It is impossible, just about, for me to use Pages on line. Why? Because the type is jammed together. There is no letterspacing (or "tracking") command. With anything but the strictly sans serif with fixed spacing, the copy's appearance is block-like, dark, with letters bleeding into each other. Even Times New Roman (a pretty standard typeface), the type looks terrible and is largely unreadable.
I realize that if you work in Pages in the application, on a Mac, that there is no problem (especially using the older Pages). But the same document on line is not really usable. I've seen discussion of this point elsewhere on the boards, but no answer.
Is there a solution for tracking or letterspacing in Pages, on line?
    thanks!

  • MP4 imported is cropping too tightly before I ever start editing

last weekend, I took a video with my Motorola Droid Razr MAXX and transferred it to my Win 7 PC.  The file runs fine on both my phone and in mp4 format on my computer, but I wanted to use Premiere Pro 5.0 to do some subtitling.
I've had no problems in the past importing video from my webcam or from DVD, but as soon as I imported it into Premiere Pro 5.0 , It's doing odd cropping before I ever start editing.  I'm getting everyone's chest and hips and losing their heads and feet.  What am I setting up wrong that it would crop like this before I ever start to edit?
I fully admit that I don't know WHAT to pick on that first screen that pops up asking what kind of format I want to use, so it's quite possible that I'm just picking the wrong one there (it defaults to DV-NTSC Widescreen 32 KHz).  I've tried a couple of the options under DV-NTSC (whatever that stands for) but they all seem to do this cropping.  There are so many options on that first panel that I'd just be guessing...and this might not even be the problem.
In case a picture is worth a thousand words, I've put a screen print of my Premiere screen at www.improventures.com/temp/temp.htm where it's easier to read than below .
    Thanks!  Milo

Wanting to make sure I followed that.  #22 said, "open file into quicktime, goto save as, save as refrence video. Done"
Are you saying I should open the original mp4 file in Quicktime and save it as a "reference file" before importing to Premiere?
If so, two problems with this:
    1)  The mp4 video plays poorly in Quicktime to begin with.  It looks choppy, like a Charlie Chaplin film.  Guessing that outputting from that would be poor as well.
    2)  The "Save As" option seems to be a function of the Pro version that I don't have.
I can understand how the phone version could be a problem if the mp4 it produced didn't play so nicely in Adobe Media player.
Seems strange that that should work but that importing it into another Adobe product is so clunky.
Last night, i stayed up late and found a way to move the audio track separately from the video. (hold the Alt key and drag the sound line).
My hope was that I could align it manually and be done with this.
No such luck.  I found a place in the middle of the video where one of the actors clearly says a line and lined up the sound perfectly with it.
This left the beginning of the video lagging behind the sound, made the middle perfect, and by the end the sound was lagging behind the video!
Can't imagine how that's even possible!
Could mp4 just not be a good format to input from?  I could use a conversion tool like Freemake Video Converter in advance to change it to something else if mp4 isn't the best choice for inputting this.
Thanks so much for your help John!!!!  ;-)

  • Possible fix for UJ-815 Superdrive problem

I found a number of posts some time ago regarding this problem. Seems my Superdrive started making coasters when either reading or writing CDs / DVDs. The problem manifests itself in a grinding noise that gets louder and louder, then the drive eventually stops spinning. When it ejects the disc a circular scratch, about 1/16" in width, is noticeable near the middle of the media. The disc is then rendered useless.
So I replaced my original Superdrive with a Matshita (Panasonic) UJ-875, a much faster and more capable drive. I got it from Powerbook Medic for $99 but there are other sources such as OWC. Powerbook Medic says this drive may be installed in any of the Powerbook G4 Aluminum or Titanium models as well as the Macbook Pro 17", the Powerbook G3, or the iBook G4.
Replacing the drive is not difficult, just delicate. You need patience, good eyes, and tiny tools to manipulate tinier screws. Powerbook Medic's guide was helpful.
After installing the new drive I disassembled the old one by removing the four Phillips screws securing the top cover. Upon opening the drive the problem was immediately evident: a metal plate installed beneath where an inserted disc would be was bowed upward. There was also clear evidence of plastic CD material deposited on the area corresponding to where my discs were damaged:
See the red circle. It's not terribly clear in the photo, but that's plastic junk. It was bent to a degree that was obvious when sighting down the edge of the metal. Reflections in it were distorted.
How the metal got to be bent is a mystery, but it stands to reason that as the drive gets warm (and they do get quite warm in use) the metal could expand and bend upward, causing the damage. I thought removing it might be instructive, but as soon as I loosened the screw near the edge of the case the metal "popped" back into a flattened shape. So I merely tightened the screw that I just loosened.
The red circle is the screw I loosened, then tightened.
Now, I haven't re-installed the drive to test this fix but it seems a pretty straightforward fix, with the metal piece flat again it shouldn't interfere with the media. Of course, it could bend upward again, but perhaps the hole this screw goes through is slotted and the screw was too tight. Perhaps the metal piece could be removed and left out entirely; who knows. The point of telling you all this is that if your drive starts exhibiting the same symptoms it might be worthwhile disassembling yours to see if this is a worthwhile fix, since the cause of the grinding noise and disk damage was obvious.
    Hope this helps!
