SuperDrive: Long Lead-Out Times

I've recently created an iDVD project for my graduation and I've been burning a lot of copies to hand out to friends and family. When I used iDVD to burn my first copy, the DVD burned relatively quickly, but when it got to the Lead-Out step it took a very long time. I initially shrugged it off thinking it was just something weird with iDVD.
I then made an image of the DVD so it would be easier to duplicate and I've been using the Universal version of Toast to burn. That is suffering from the same issue of a very long Lead-Out time. The DVD burns in about two minutes with the Lead-Out taking about 6-10 minutes. That just sounds ridiculous since the Lead-Out is taking ~4x longer than the actual burning.
Is this normal across all MacBooks? I don't think my PC DVD burner ever took this long to do a Lead-Out. It's just kind of annoying since I'm trying to make a ton of copies and the Lead-Out is really slowing me down.
If it matters my SuperDrive is a MATSHITA UJ-857.

Yes, anything outside of 60 seconds wuld be considered a bit too long. Have you tried resetting PRAM?

  • Long Lead Out Times!!!!! Help

Anyone know how to cut down on writing lead-out times with dvd-studio pro 4
Took about 7 min for a 30 sec clip

The reason that the shorter the clip is, the longer the lead out is because of what I posted earlier. The dvd spec requires a gig minimum of data/content. Not all burners/burning applications will hold true to that spec, so some might not experience the longer lead out times (which is the burning application adding dummy padding data to fill the gig up). If you are using media, then that type is 'approved' by the dvd consortium; and typically is the type of media that will result in the long lead out times (complying to spec). Depending on the speed of the media and burner, 7 minutes would be about right for 1 gig (since the 30 sec clip wouldn't take up much by itself).
If you use media (not 'officially approved by the dvd forum), then it's basically looked at as a data disc, and generally don't end up having the padding data added on; and hence they burn quicker.

boards. As a leader in test and measurement for industry, you should be examples as to fast lead times and reasonable delivery times. I regret that I will think twice when I quote an NI board for a project again. The long lead time is simply unacceptable!I too have felt the frustration about lead times. As an Alliance Member, I have ordered countless NI products and had lots of tense conversations with clients who are wondering what is holding up the turn-key system I promised them.
What we need to keep in mand is that NI is subject to part shortages just like any other manufacturer. They do their best to get things out on time, and in fact they do much better than others. I've been forced to order lots of Agilent equipment with > 20 WEEK lead times! Not only was there a 20 week lead time quoted when I ordered it, they MISSED the target by 4 weeks! In those cases, Agilent had the only solution and NI products couldn't cover it.
In many cases your DSM and / or ISR can help you locate a loaner to tide you over until yo
u board is shipped. I have had very good experiences in the past with those folks.
Hey, I'm also noticing that the standard lead times are now listed online when browsing the catalog. That should help you plan your project shedules in the future.
Again, for what it's worth, I feel your pain.

  • Writing lead-out never finishes

    Weird problem.
Project burns correctly, but iDVD 5 will sit on "Writing lead-out" forever. The first time this happened, I forced-quit iDVD 5, but could not eject the disk. I waited about 30 minutes before I forced-quit, then rebooted the system. I was able to eject the disk than, and it worked perfectly in my set top DVD player, as well as in the DVD player app.
Tried to burn again, this time let iDVD run overnight. Woke up this morning to see it still "writing lead-out". As before, the disk worked perfectly, but it required a force-quit/reboot in order for me to eject.
What's going on, and how do I fix it? This is a new clean install of 10.4, just wiped the system last week.

'Writing lead-out' can take a long time - especially on 'short' discs - but overnight is too long.
I suppose you could have a media problem or write speed problem (either of which can produce lots of burn errors).
Have you tried creating a disk image instead of writing directly to writable media?

  • Writing Lead-out

"Writing lead-out" seems to take forever - ten minutes anyway. Why? Is there a way to speed this up? I had a two minute DVD that I can burn quickly but then writing lead-out goes on and on.
    Thanks

and it will go on and on.
What is surprising, is that the longer the DVD, the shorter the write out.
But writing the lead out on really short DVDs takes a bunch of time. No way to speed it up.
    best wishes

That it is still working is miraclous.. most have died.. lots started flaking out at 18months to 2years..
    See deadtimecapsule.org
The few that remained now seem to have reached EOL.. you can repair if you have some skills.. fairly cheaply.
But it is well and truly time to replace.

  • Time out Time in Infopackage

    Dear experts,
We are using Time out time setting in IP. We made it as 10 mins.  we made this setting for successfully running the process chain where other events are waiting for this process to finish.
that means it has to fail if the time of IP exceeds 10 mins. But this is not failing eventhough it exceeds 10mins...what could be the reason?????
    Please share ur valueble thoughts....
    Thanks in advance

  • Writing lead-out problem ...?

    Howdy All,
I am using iDVD6 to burn a project to RIDATA DVD+R DL discs. The burn in iDVD6 90% of the time fails at the end (no error logs). However, after playing the DVD on a number of players (computer and dedicated) the DVD seems to be fine (all aspects - movie, slides, finish etc).
A hint at the problem may be that when I use Toast to burn data to the same discs it fails at writing the "Lead-Out" with Mac OS Error -5001. Searching the Internet hasn't really told me much about either of those (Lead-Out) or Mac OS Error -5001.
Burns have worked fine on the Samsung TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182D DVD Burner before, with other media (Imation DVD+R DL). However, writing the lead-out also failed on an Imation disc when retrying it after it failed on a RIDATA disc. DVD burns the Imation succeed.
Would anyone have any idea of what is happening? Can I just ignore the problem? Is there any easy way I can do a bitwise compare of the DVD and, say, a disk image? Does iDVD do a verify of the burn (although having it tell me the burn failed isn't a good sign if it does)?
If this is a media issue, which I assume it is (although the Imation failing is a problem), what has it go to do with writing the lead-out?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, experience, comments.
    Cheers,
    Ashley Aitken.

    Hi Klaus,
Thanks for that, I kind-of guessed what "lead out" was about but thanks for giving all the details.
You don't provide any information on what Mac you
have, what OS, how much RAM (example: see my profile
at the bottom of this post), which would help a lot
    in diagnosing your problem.
Power Mac G5 - original single CPU model (can't recall the speed) with 2GB RAM etc.
New Samsung DVD Burner (as indicated in previous post), original drive didn't burn dual layer disks.
I've since found that my "backup" with Toast (spanning multiple DVD+R DLs) that failed the Lead Out actually bit-compares with the original.
As the DVDs which failed also seem to work fine in DVD players and on the computer, I wonder if this is really a significant error.
Many here find that Verbatim DVD-R, as well as Fuji
DVD-R, give the fewest problems, even more so when
they are burned at only 2x or 4x.
Thanks that info - its unfortunate we have to burn at slower speeds than the drive is rated - kind of beats the purpose ...
I've previously had pretty good results with Imation DVD+R DL but wanted something that was inkjet printable (DL).
I could only find RiData locally. I now know that they are though of as second tier media, so perhaps the media is the problem.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

  • IDVD (and Toast) never complete writing lead-outs

    Hi,
I've noticed occasionally that when using Toast 7 and iDVD 6 that during the writing process, the application in question persists on writing the lead-out. I understand what the correlation between lead-out and DVD playing length are. However, the drive just spins and spins for hours if left to do so. It is a Pioneer DVR-109 (not Apple blessed). The media is Memorex DVD-R 16x and I frankly haven't spent time trying other media yet.
I'm unable to halt the spinning by any means other than rebooting the computer. Usually, the result is fine. Sometimes the DVD doesn't conclude viewing properly.
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yup, the Memorex disks have been a bit problematic. I was able to burn to an image with iDVD.
I happened to have some TEON DVD-R 8x media a friend gave for another project, and that worked fine. The Memorex 16x media burned at 8x had the same issue.
I had had poor experiences with Verbatim media in the past. But co-workers have raved about the DL disks and the single-layer ones lately. Perhaps I will give them a try.
    Thanks!

  • Gradually decrease volume/ adjust only fade out time

Hi,,, 2 questions: How do I GRADUALLY decrease or increase volume in desired clip (to inaudible).
How do I adjust the lenght of the FADE out time ONLY at the end of or beginning of a ClIP
    Howard

To add a Fade In or Fade Out, right-click on a clip on your timeline and select the fade option.
As I say in my books, fades are really just keyframed opacity and volume levels. If you look closely at the clips on your timeline, you'll see the keyframe points and the sloping line between them that creates the fade.
To make your fade last longer, just move these keyframes farther apart!

I have a 64GB iPad Air WiFi+Cellular (Verizon), and I don't see the issues you are describing.  First I would suggest that you update your iPad to the newest iOS update.  If that doesn't help, then you may want to schedule an appointment at an Apple Genius Bar.  If you go this route, I suggest that you let the iPad sleep for long enough for the problem to arise before you go to your appointment.

  • Reg planning of long lead materials

    Dear all,
To make a finished material there are 4 stages below which we have raw materials which are expensive and require 8-10 months lead time to procure and here planning of raw materials is done once in a quarter, how to plan for such long lead time materials ( can we use MRP planning) here we should plan only raw materials and later on all the semifinished materials once we get the customer order
    please help me
    Thanks in advance
    venu

    Venu,
Use planning strategy "50" for your finished product, and you can create PIR for the forecast for the Finished Product. Take up MRP run and after MRP run for finished product you would get Planned orders of type "VP" and you would get dependent requirement for Components which can be processed further. Planned orders VP cannot be converted to Production orders, when a sales order is created for this product this planned order quantity would be reduced and new planned equal to the quantity of sales order would be created for execution.

  • IDVD 09' Freezes when writing lead-out.

Everything seems to work fine until it gets to "writing lead-out" it then seems to freeze up, after about 15-20 minutes it will eject my dvd disc, the screen stays the same as if it's still writing the lead-out. When i play back the dvd disc it stops playing about 1 minute into the movie. but if i play the copy on my hard drive (the one i'm trying to burn to disc) it works fine. Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

    Hi DJHYPE
Welcome to apple discussions. Sorry to hear you are having troubles burning to Dvd-R.
Suggestion: Let's narrow things down a bit. Try burning a disc image first to the desktop. You can do that from the file menu within iDvd. Next I'd like you to test the disc image with apple's dvd player app. Assuming it plays as expected, then burn to Verbatim, Maxell, or Tiaiyo Yuden at 4x. Please avoid Memorex while trobleshooting. Thereafter / once we have the issue resolved, feel free to burn to whatever media works best for you and your mac.

  • Advance Procurement /Long Lead item

    Hi Experts,
We have some long delivery items in BOM for which we are trying advance procurement. We have maintained strategy 70, item category'L' in material master and attached the material to an activity which is 2 months prior to the scheduled production. We generated PR for this item and created PO however during the Project MRP run, system is generating PR again for this item. Please inform which are all the settings required to prevent the PR getting generated again during project MRP.
Any help on this issue is highly appreciated.
    Points assured.
    Best Regards
    Afroz Ahmed

    Hi Afroz,
Please maintain individual collective indicator in material master MRP-4 view of the long lead time material to
"2-collective. So that the system will consume the existing stock.

  • Problem with send long response out.

    Dear All.
I am trying to send a long response out with Java Card but It doesn't work properly.
    This is my code:
         public void cmdSync(APDU apdu)
              apdu.setOutgoing();
              apdu.setOutgoingLength(TOTAL_LOG_LENGTH);//TOTAL_LOG_LENGTH = 400
              apdu.sendBytesLong(log, (short)0, TOTAL_LOG_LENGTH);
    I followed this guide: http://www.cardwerk.com/smartcards/smartcard_standard_ISO7816-4_annex-a.aspx#AnnexA_2E_2
    Section A.5, Case 2E.2 - Le>256, B1='00', B2B3=either '0000' or from '0101' to 'FFFF'.
The response APDU I received is "67 00" that means it refuse C-ADPU because of Wrong length. I follow that document and send an C-APRU like this:
CLA INS P1 P2      B1='00' B2B3=Le. I try with 00 03 00 00 00 01 90 ( 03 is my defined INS) but it didn't occur the same with cases they give. Is there any one can help me figure this out. I appreciate your help.

It seems you have not taken my advice from your last thread on the same topic. You need to research response APDU chaining. Extended length APDU's will not help you as your card does not seem to support it.
HINT: You need to send 256 bytes at a time and return control to the host after each response (don't try and call send multiple times without handing control back to the host). The host then sends a GET RESPONSE APDU for the next block of data and you continue until all data is returned. Your applet needs to handle the GET RESPONSE APDU as well.
As was said in the last thread, search the forum. I have posted example code recently for this.
    Cheers,
    Shane
