Superdrive not reading older DVDs since Lion

Have a 2009 Mac Pro, just updated to Lion.  The installed Superdrive spins and nothing gets mounted.  In order to eject, I have to shutdown, and catch it when I start again, by hitting the keyboard eject button.
The particular DVD is a transfer from VHS tape made years ago.  It plays in normal DVD or Bluray players.  It just hangs the Superdrive.
I have tried a commercial DVD in my Superdrive and it works just fine.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Nelson

I'm having similar problems too since upgrading. I would insert a dvd and sometimes it does not mount. I can't even eject it. Disk utility can't see it either. To get the disk out I have to restart it then is on the desktop and it fuctions as normal. I'm pretty sure it's not the drive as I've never seen this on SL.

  • SuperDrive not reading any DVDs or CDs

My Matshita UJ-857E (ZA0E) SuperDrive died on me....
It now does not accept any CDs or DVDs and instead just spits them back out a few seconds after putting them in the slot.
Running Leopard 10.5.5 on MBP (Aug. 2007)...
I really need to use the drive.
I am out of warranty and am prepared to purchase a new drive if required, but want to leave that as the last option. Any hints as to fixing the drive will be greatly appreciated. (I guess ruining the drive by doing something stupid is not a problem... it's already ruined!)
    Thanks!

    Hi
A viable option is an external drive, such as made by LaCie. I bought a FireWire drive a few years ago and it's still a useful spare. Getting a new drive fitted inside your MB now it's out of warranty will probably be very expensive.

  • Not reading older DVD archive

I use DVD backup, after upgrading to maverick my DVDs started having .fpbf extension on them. Now many of my backed up DVDs show up as empty, untitled DVDs - What's up.   The DVDs show up on my desktop as  untitled.fpbf

I've already erased the upper/lower thing, still doesn't work
I don't count with an externeal TOSHIBA dvd drive, is any brand useful?
I'm in Argentina and official technical service is very expensive, can I configurate my external hard disk (made out of an internal disk and a case with usb connection) to replace the internal hidden volume or the dvd recover disk? in the system configuration, it appears as a "description: local fixed disk"
    thanks everyone!

  • Still no fix for superdrive not reading any disc at all?

I've searched through the forum and it seems like there's still no solution for the superdrive not reading any sort disc at all. I have had this imac for almost a month. I rarely have used the superdrive but was trying to play a normal audio cd tonight and upon further investigation found that the drive is not reading any type of disc.
If a disc is loaded, the drive whirs/beeps 4-5 times while trying to read the disc and then ejects it. this happens for dvd movies, audio cds, osx install disc, etc.
I did successfully play and rip some cds a few weeks ago when the imac was first purchased. I have not inserted discs often enough in the past to substantiate that upgrading to 10.4.5 or 10.4.6 affected the drive's performance.
Think I need a new drive or could this be software related?

    I want "solved"
You can add me to the list too - I check this page frequently for a reply from an apple representative - to no avail.
My computer is less than 2 years old, purchased brand spankin' new, w/o the warrantee - but hey when you pay that much for your 'puter it should not break down at ANY time during (at least) the first 5 years, unless gross negligence and disregard is involved (which is is not).
I would not categorize myself as being in the 'high usage' category for burning either dvd's or cd's, but here I am less than 2 yrs after purchase w/ a superdrive that can't even read a store-bought cd, and oddly enough the problems I am having DO seem to coincide w/ download of a 'security update.'
    Hmmmm......
I would like, at the very least, a helpful suggestion from someone working for Apple - if not an acknowledgement of an actual issue with a faulty (expensive) product.
A guarantee of satisfaction with a purchase should not be wrapped up in purchase of a service plan - good customer service is good policy, and should be provided as a means of standing behind the quality of a product you both sell, and believe in.
There is no good reason why my computer should be broken, and there is no good reason why it shouldn't be fixed - and I see a lot of you have even more reason for complaint than I do. It is irksome in the extreme that this issue seems not to warrant the attention from anyone who can make a difference to our plight.
One would think that a drop-down menu on an official web-site would have a better response rate from affiliated 'professionals' - but we all know the old adage about assuming...
Hey - maybe customer service really is dead - and I might believe that if it weren't for the fact that I respond, personally, to customer e-mails on a daily basis...
    Where is our response?
I apologize for the lengthy "blog" - but short and sweet hasn't done the trick..maybe this will?? We can only hope...

  • CD/DVD drive does not read all DVD formats and regions

    Hi
My Teac-dw-224e-a does not read all DVDs formats and regions.
It does read CDs but no DVDs at all.
Not DVD-R and not even regular DVDs. I have checked the region of the DVD.
I have reinstalled the driver and also tried with different software.
    What can I do?
    Please help!

    Hi
It is possible that your DVD drive has wrong region settings.
In this case it is not able to watch all possible DVD movies from different regions.
Of course you can change the settings 4 times. But after this changing the settings are fixed and its not possible to change it anymore.

  • " DVD RW Drive " is not reading / writing DVD. It can read only CD.

" DVD RW Drive "  is not reading / writing DVD.
The same DVD can be read on my frnds laptop.
Corresponding drivers r up to date.. I even tried uninstall and then restart and then let my laptop install the required driver automatically. I've tried everything I could find on some forums.
I was told to delete " Upper & Lower filters ". I didnt find Lower filter so I had to delete only "Upper Filter".
    Plz assist me..
I will be waiting for ur kind reply.
    Thank u so much.

The upper and lower filter thing only applies if the drive is not showing up at all in the Device Manager. If it appears as a drive and will perform any function at all, then it is likely a hardware issue. One way you can be sure is to try to boot from a bootable DVD such as a Windows 7 install Disk. If the computer will not boot from such a disk then it is apparent the hardware is defective, not the Windows software because the problem exists even before Windows loads.
The drive has multiple lasers and it is possible for one to go out but not the others.  The drive is easily replaced. See below:
This eBay seller ships worldwide. You would have to transplant your plastic drive face but that is very easy to do:

  • HT2801 My DVD drive is not reading any DVD

My iMac's DVD drive is not reading any DVD. Whenever I am inserting any DVD, The DVD icon is not appearing and the DVD is ejected out after sometime. I have also tried the troubleshooting steps given in the apple support site by restting the SMC but my iMac still does not read any DVD. What do I do now? Somebody help me.

Could try purchasing a commercially available, retail dry brush CD/DVD lens cleaning system disc. These can sometimes revive a malfunctioning optical disc drive.

  • MY DVD drive does not read all DVDs and also does not burn CDS properly. Often while burning a CD i am prompted that " The machine is unable to caliberate teh required Lazer Power"

Hi i am having a i MAC which has mountain lion OS 10.8.2. I am facing teh followwing issues with my disk drive
    1. I am unable to read all DVDS in it some DVDS work while others do not
    2. I am able to read all CD's, but while burning a CD i am prompted with the following message
" Unable to caliberate lazer power"
    3. Kindly assit me in solving this problem
    regards

    Hi
    Four thoughts
    • Brand and type of DVD/CD Media
    • Burn Speed ?
    • Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
    • Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
Brand and type of DVD/CD Media: MATTERS
    - Memorex, NoName and other Cheap brands - most probably works for other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO.
    I only use Verbatim
    - DVD-RW - usually do not work OK but with various kinds of problems. DVD+R is a more modern sort and use to give problems on older DVD-players
    I only use DVD-R
Burn Speed (in iDVD or alike): Matters
    • Best or Max - is not best
I set it down to x2 or x4 Max
Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
I use one WITHOUT Liquid but with brushes from time to time
Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
    - Due to that Mac OS X - is UNIX - it behaves likewise. It needs lot's of space on Boot / Start-Up Hard Disk for it's and the applications temp files.
I never go less than 25GB free space - If HD-Video material is used then 4-5 times more is a good thing.

  • Mac not reading certain DVDs.....

Can someone offer a download/quickfix to this problem? One DVD in particular works fine on my DVD player connected to my TV, but will not read on my computer.
Is there something I can download to improve the readability of the software? I have Toast 7 and IDVD, but I think the problem isn't with either player, but something with the machine.
    Thoughts ?

Many have reported mixed results reading DVDs on Macs and here are the most common reasons:
    1. If these are all commercial movie DVDs, and they are the standard size on
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
and the problem is strictly with playing movies, I'd contact Apple here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
    2. There are some programs in the media content of discs that only work on Windows or a special DVD Player called Interactual Player. http://player.interactual.com/default.asp?code=MAC
    3. If these are homemade DVDs it gets stickier. Many people burn to DVD something other than the standard Video_TS folders, thus they aren't playable in a standard DVD Players. DVD-R DL is not as supported as DVD+R DL.
Older Macs don't support DVD+R DL or single layer at all. To find out if yours does, check the specs of your Mac:
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html
If the Mac only supports CD-ROM, CD-RW, or CD-R, then it doesn't support DVD at all. Combo drive Macs support playing DVD-ROM and DVD-R discs, but now DVD-RW or DVD+R unless the specs actually say those formats are supported. Superdrive Macs of varying vintages may support DVD-R, and DVD-RW, but not DVD+R or DVD+RW when it comes to burning.
PC burnt DVDs in UDF or Joliet may not read at all whereas those burnt in ISO 9660 have a much better chance of being read. For UDF, you may need:
    http://www.softarch.com/us/products/rdvd.html
    4. DVDs burnt for different regions than a region locked DVD drive may also not play:

  • IMac not reading CDs/DVDs

I'm on an older (late 2009) iMac, just installed Maverick a few days ago, but the problem preceeds this.  Basically, my computer will not read CDs or DVDs.  Any disc I put into the computer, I hear the whirring noise as if it's reading the disc, but it immediately winds down.  It will repeat trying to read the disc 2 or 3 more times, then just spit the disc out.
I tried spraying some compressed air into the slot, and it still won't read most CDs or DVDs, but now when I insert an MP3 CD that my boss had burned for me, the window pops up for when you insert a blank CD, so the drive is reading blank (or previously burned CDs AS blank), but not DVDs or normal CDs (for example, it spit out both a video game installation disc and a movie DVD).
I made sure that if i go to Finder > Preferences > General that "CDs, DVDs and iPods" is checked, and everything looks normal in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • My MacBook Pro does not read burnt DVD

    Hi guys,
Does anyone of you alredy encountered the following problem with your optical drive (Matshita DVD-R UJ 857):
    - Perfect CD reading/recording
    - Perfect original DVD reading
    - Perfect DVD burning
    - No or almost no burnt DVD reading.
This is becoming nasty since you back up your stuff on a blank DVD (verbatim DVD-R) but cant read them back...
Anyone out there that has the same pityful problem?
    Let me know,
    .M

I too am having this problem. I spoke with Apple Support and they basically said "if it reads the DVDs we provide then it's not broken". What a joke.
The DVDs I am having problems with are all from commercial software that I purchased, but they are not pressed discs. They are DVD-R or DVD+R (not sure which). The discs do not read on my 15" MBP, but read just fine on my 15" PB and on my desktop Windows system. To me it seems that the new SuperDrive is not so super after all.
Hopefully Apple will hear from enough of us that this is a problem, and then maybe they will actually do something to fix it.
    Cheers

this is the information about my drive. I never installed the infamous 2.1 superdrive update, so i dont know if this issue is related. My driver stills reads cds, so it isnt totally dead. Any help would be sooooo much appreciated.
"Media: No" seems like the most likely culprit, what can i do to fix that? My brother has the exact same issue with his identical model of MBP (2.33ghz C2D).

Thanks. Of course I meant an erase and install.
I could understand it being the battery if no discs worked at all, but why would the drive work with the apple discs and no others? Is there a way of testing the battery without opening up the case and replacing it?
Testing the pram battery? Yes, make sure your PowerBook is set to the correct date and time. Unplug the PowerBook from the mains and remove your main battery. Wait a couple of minutes then put everything back to normal and start it. Make sure you also have turned off in the date and time setup the ability to use a network time server.
If your PowerBook still has the correct date and time your pram battery is working.
Why only certain disks? As I mentioned in my previous posting if the lens is dirty this could be the problem. For example on PowerBook I just worked on it was not reading disks until I happened to put in one particular one that it read. That told me the problem was intermittent and that the drive was working to a degree. Since this laptop was quite dirty/dusty I figured it could be a dirty lens since it is fairly easy for dirt to work it's way into the drive.
Took the quick and easy way out, however if it starts to act up again I may have to pull apart the drive I use a high quality photo lens cleaning brush to give it wipe but do not use any pressure as you can damage the wiring going into the lens and of course do not do this with the hardware powered! In a worse case scenario I use a dab on Kodak lens cleaning solution on a wadded piece of lens tissue but again I don't recommend this approach unless you're really really really gentle.
There are also cleaning CD's and the Allsop one isn't bad as it has a small row of brushes attached to it that wipe the lens when it passes by, my fear is causing damage if it knocks the lens and some VRDS drives this will not work with.
