SuperDrive not working/ appearing/ powering up

So my super drive has stoped working, when i try insert a disk it does not accept it or reject it, in fact it dosent make a single sound, its like there is no power going to it. When i looked in disc utilities there is also no superdrive appearing, even when there is a disc waiting to be accepted. I then went to system information -> disc burning: and it said that there is no device connected, and to make sure if there is one connected that its switched on. I dont know what to do as my SuperDrive is built into the mac so there should be power to it, and it should be recongised. Anyone have any ideas on how i can fix this? is this simply a hardware issue such as it being stuffed, or is there no software to make it opperational ????

If your Mac is not recognizing the drive, it's likely just dead and needs to be replaced. How old is your Mac? Are you still under warranty? It's always possible that it's just a loose cable, of course, but I doubt it. Drives, like people, die. No one know when they will go but, eventually, they will.
Sorry,
Clinton

  • HT2801 USB Superdrive not working

I currently posess a macbook pro which has a non-working disk drive.  so to save time i bought the usb superdrive to see if i could work on a class of mine that requires a computer disk.  however it isnt processing the fact that it should play the disk when inserted in the drive.  I have it plugged in but for some reason the superdrive is not working.  what do i do to make it work? do i need to get my macbook pro repaired?

Take the Mac to the store, plug each candidate in and check in the System Profiler to ensure it is getting recognized and all its capabilities enabled. About this Mac / More Info... / System Report / Disk Burning. Be sure to refresh the info after testing each drive.
You'll find two families: those with external power connection and those powered by the Mac itself. The former usually enable much faster read/write operations, the latter are more convenient but can really drain the battery fast.

  • MacBook Air superdrive not working 10.7.1

    Hello,
I have been working on two Macbook Airs. One has 10.7.1 on it and the other had 10.7.0 on it. I can get the one with 10.7.0 to upload up the cd but not the 10.7.1. I updated the 10l.7.0 computer to 10.7.1 and now its having the same issue. I have tried connection the superdrive in both of the ports on the 2 computers. I tried another super drive and also go the same problem. Has anyone else seen this?
    Thanks,
    Topher Nadauld

I can confirm this behavior. My suspicion is that Apple is using a non-standard implementation of the USB interface to power the DVD drive. I don't think that the USB spec provides enough power for the drive.
The drive will not work in Mac OS X or Windows if it is plugged into a USB hub.

  • SuperDrive not working post Mt Lion upgrade

My SuperDrive was working flawlessly on my 2010 Mini. I upgraded from Snow direct to Mt Lion and SuperDrive now only reads CDs I previously burned but not DVDs I burned. The discs I burned are back ups of photos so I can't speak to sound files, etc. Retail CDs and DVDs are ejected without error messages including the Apple supplied DVDs of Snow, support apps and my fresh Adobe Lightroom 4 disc. I repaired disc permissions, reset PRAM and SMC to no avail. Any ideas??

  • Superdrive not working, ejects disks

My Superdrive is not working anymore, it's being recognized in the disk utility but when I insert any disc I hear it reading it for about 20-30 seconds then it just ejects it out.
What would possibly be wrong with it and how can I fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

My THIRD replacement superdrive arrived today. Guess what? No matter what disk is used, the disk is NOT supported; it is ejected. Being a contrary person, I turned the sperdrive upside down, that is the Apple logo is down; the same rejection.
    My conclusions are:
    1. The whole **** lot of air superdrives MUST be returned back to the Chinese factory.
    2. Any air superdrive MUST be tested by Apple before shipping.
3, I am in the process of writing a letter to the Apple President Mr. Job asking that he stop hustling new products and FIX some of the core products that don't work.
    4. I also suggest that as Apple are incapable of making workable air superdrives, a company such as Hewlett Packard be franchised to make air superdrives. I have a 15-year old HP laserjet that worked the FIRST time it was plugged and it is STILL working.

  • New SuperDrive Not Working XP

I had my SuperDrive working fine with my XP (Boot Camp) partition. I replaced my SuperDrive due to the wire coating issue, and now my new SuperDrive stopped working on XP (yes, works fine on Leopard).
    Any help? , please.

Do not delete your partition and waste 3 hours reinstalling drivers. I ran into this exact problem, but happened when I performed an install on a macbook and transfered that partition to a macbook air because we did not have the external superdrive. Soon after the initial install, a superdrive was acquired, but would not be working in XP. The superdrive was being recognized in the device manager, but said there was a configuration issue and to reinstall the drivers. To get around this:
    1. Go into device manager
    2. Select the External SuperDrive (should have a yellow exclamation mark)
    3. Right click SuperDrive, select "Update Driver"
    4. Select "No, not this time"
    5. Select "Install from a list or specific location"
    6. Select "Don't search. I will choose driver to install"
    7. Select "USB Mass Storage Device" (do not select External Super Drive)
    8. Click Finish
    9. Now you will see your optical drive be recognized by XP, but it is not yet functional. Go back to device manager and select the super drive (probably labeled external optical drive, or perhaps usb mass storage device).
    10. Repeat Steps 1-6.
    11. When you get back to your choices, now you can select "Apple SuperDrive"
    12. Enjoy your SuperDrive.
It now works. Hope this helps you save time instead of reinstalling XP and going through another strenuous activation process (especially if you already have VMWare or Parallels set up).

  • USB superdrive not working with Mac Pro

Is there a trick to getting a USB Superdrive working with a Macpro?
The drive in the Macpro no longer ejects and have tried connecting the USB drive to both the front and back ports - does it not work with Mac Pros?
Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.

I had a problem my superdrive. It would play dvd's and cd's that were already burnt but would not burn blank DVDs or CDs- in the recent past it had no problems burning. In addition, the Finder would not display the superdrive. When I put a blank disc in it would go to Disk Utilities and would not allow burning. With help from Apple I discovered the problem-- The settings in CDS & DVDs had been changed from When you insert a blank DVD/CD "Ask what to do to  to  "GO to Disk Utilities". If this sounds like your problem try changing the settings to this:
Try going to; System Preferences/ CDs & DVDs
Change these two settings to this:
When you insert a blank CD: Ask what to do
When you insert a blank DVD: Ask what to do
NOTE: If they are already set to this you probably have a different problem. If they are set to Go to Disk Utilitiy this is probably a solution.
    And
    Then go to Finder Preferences
Make sure that under "Show these items on desktop:" that the checkbox for CDs, DVDs, and iPods is checked.
Try to burn the DVD again (reload Disc- perhaps restart) and try again.
Don't know how these setting changed but they did. It worked for me.

  • Why does my ipad not work when powered up and screen just lights up dark blue?

IPad Model A1219 does not respond when powered up, screen barely lights up just a dark blue screen thats it. will not do anything else, why?

I think the subVI is working just fine when called from the main. I think what you're expecting is an indicator on the main VI to update as the subVI runs. What you will see on the main front panel is just the last value that a subVI has. That is the intended behavior of subVIs and function calls in all other languages. If you want to to update a front panel indicator while a subVI runs, pass a reference to the indicator into the subVI and update that reference instead of the indicator on the subVI. The other way is via a global variable. I've attached a modified version of your porgram.

  • Apple superdrive not working on iMac , will not mount , not recognized

I bought a new superdrive and it was not detected on my iMac. The internal drive was failed , I found a solution here.
    http://www.hardturm.ch/luz/2011/10/how-to-make-the-macbook-air-superdrive-work-w ith-any-mac/

The Apple USB SuperDrive only works officially on Macs without a built-in SuperDrive (the MacBook Air, Mid 2011 and newer Mac minis, the Late 2012 iMac and the MacBook Pro with Retina display). As your iMac has got a built-in optical drive, it doesn't work by default, but as you said, that workaround makes the Apple USB SuperDrive work.
Anyway, if you have a Mac with a built-in SuperDrive and the SuperDrive gets damaged, I recommend you to buy a different external optical drive. The Apple external optical drive doesn't have a good reputation because it often fails and it's much expensive than other external optical drives

  • Macbook Pro Superdrive not working?

Although I have found many threads alike, nothing seems to have worked for me so far.
I bought a 13 inch Macbook Pro around Spring 2011 and have been using it with no issues until now.
The issue is that the Superdrive is refusing to read CD's and DVD's. With Audio CD's it spits them out almost instantly, but not before making a rather discouraging 'error' noise. With DVD's it tries to read them multiple times and usually takes around 30 seconds to a minute for it to eject it automatically and makes the same loading noise around 3-5 times during attempts.
I haven't used the Macbook to play many DVD's or games and I have only played a few CD's using iTunes. I discovered this issue yesterday after attempting to play a game in my macbook. I tried around 3 DVD's and CD's and all of them showed the same results. I am positive that this is a hardware issue as the DVD's & CD's play in other machines with absolutely no issues.
I have tried blowing air into the superdrive, resetting the SCM, repairing 'Macintosh HD' in Disk Utility, resetting the PRAM, running in Safe Mode and creating a new user account and obviously up to now, nothing has worked.
Is there anything else I should try before taking it into an Apple Store? I have made a genius bar appointment for next Monday but I am wondering if there is anything else that I should try first.
It is also probably worth mentioning that I have run the same discs in the past multiple times without fail, and also that the drive still appears on System Profiler. Perhaps also that I haven't used the Superdrive in a long time and I have updated this machine several times after using it. Also; I can't get hold of a lens-cleaner before Monday, so that's out of the question.
If it is a hardware issue, and the Superdrive does require to be fixed/replaced, how much would this cost, as my Macbook is technically no longer under Warranty?
The name listed in System Profiler states: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS23N under 'Disk Burning' and it also says 'Reads DVD: Yes'.
    Many Thanks.

First, if the Mac is still within its one-year base warranty, get it over to the Store pronto so the drive can be replaced for free.
Second, if the Mac is still within its one-year base warranty, seriously consider purchasing the 2-year AppleCare warranty extension right now. Can prove to be cheaper than having to pay for repairs down the road.
If the warranty is kaput and none of the above apply, can check in PowerBookMedic.com or IFixIt.com for the cost of a new drive. Cause it seems like it is kaput too. Unless you're all ten thumbs, replacement is fairly straightforward. The same places mentioned have detailed videos or pictorials on the procedure.

  • SuperDrive not working and bootcamp seems not working with external CD

    Hi everyone,
I have a MacBook, and the internal SuperDrive is dead, now I'm using an
    external CD drive (USB).
Yesterday I bought Leopard 10.5.4, (need to intall BootCamp).
The update from Tiger to Leopard was easy, and withought problems, but when I tried to install BootCamp, the partition seems correctly created, but when the program request the Windows CD and restart, a grey screen apears and nothing
happend... also Leopard is unable to start again, just the grey screen...
Now I found that if I press alt key, appear the Macintosh HD and i can start it,
    but never automatically...
What can I do? I tried to reintall again with the same result...
I need BootCamp, if not i think i waste 129$ cause the only reason to purchase Leopard was BootCamp... also I need my computer reebot again by itself, not using the alt key... that's really anoying...
    Please Help
    Best regards.

    Hi BigWaveSurfer,
I don't have an external CD/DVD-Drive, so I made some guessing.
From my understanding of Windows it is more likely to work with an USB-connected external drive than with a FireWire one.
Windows XP (and Vista to my knowledge) can only support/access Firewire devices with additional drivers, that are not loadad/used during the installation phase.
Only when Windows is fully installed the needed Firewire driver is present and Windows can use it.

  • Line-in port not working with powered microphone

I'm not sure if this is an issue of me not understanding how line-in ports work or if there is actually something wrong with the line-in port/jack. So, I have a Sony microphone that is powered by one AA battery. The microphone has no problems because I can plug it in to my voice recorder and it works fine. However, when I plug it in to the line-in port of my PB, the PB does not pick up any sound. And yes, I have made sure that in the Sound preferences, I selected input source as "Line-in."
So, does this mean there is something wrong with the port, or does it mean I need to plug my powered microphone into an amplifier which plugs into the PB or....?
    Thanks!
    Conal

    Hi Conal
There's probably nothing wrong with your line-in port - it's just that you've discovered the difference between "line level" signals and "mic level" signals! To put it simply, the output from a microphone (whether it operates on battery power or not) is far too low for a line level input to recognise - hence the reason you are not picking up sound on the PB. (Your voice recorder will be picking up sound because it's operating at mic-level).
The only way around this is to plug your mic into some form of pre-amp and then plug the line level output of the pre-amp into your PB. Personally I use a Tascam US-122 audio/midi interface and run the signals into the PB on USB. Works extremely well but I'm sure you'll be able to find a cheaper alteranative with a little bit of searching.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why is my new USB Superdrive not working?

When I connect my new USB superdrive (external disc drive) to my iMac, it doesn't show on my list of devices in Finder or on the desktop.  I took it back to the store and it works on the store's iMacs. My eReader and USB memory stick both work.
Is there something I have to set in Preferences or software I have to load?

What year is your Mac? Is this the one you got?
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive#overview-4
It only works with the new 2012 iMacs (which would explain why it works with the Macs in the store) and a couple of other models.
You could try an SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    and reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243
If that does not help and yours is a late 2012, then I have no answer for you except that unless someone else chimes in with one, I'd call Apple if you're still covered by the warranty or go back to the store.
Additionally, my LaCie external burner does not show on the desktop unless I have a disk inserted.

  • Ipad2 battery will not work, once powered on it says 100% charged. but if i unplug it, it stops showing images.

Battery seems dead. only powers on when charged, but goes off when i unplug it's power cord. And if it was on, i could only use it for about 5 minutes, then it flickers off.
i've tried updating it to ios 7.0, but when it starts to prepare for update it shuts off due to the 5 minute time. I tried that on the device itself, tried with a mac, but it only powers on when charged.
Strange thing, when i go in to recover mode it stays on like.. forever! And if i charge it with a iphone 1A charger it will not pass the apple logo on start up; but if i use the ipad 2A charger it stays on for 5 minutes!!
Please help me, i had this issue foe weeks!
just to tell you people how my ipad got this issue: my sister was playing it at the sofa for an hour or so. then i went and picked it up and tried to power it up, but it just stays black. i charged it, and as i said above, my ipad only works for 5 minutes!
So thanks to whatever who helped me solve this problem!!!!!

    You followed this exactly?
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • FireWire 400 External Superdrive Not Working

Hi I have an older Lacie Design by FA Porsche Superdrive connected to Mac Book Pro running OS 10.5.1 via Fire Wire 400. I am trying to burn a DVD using Toast 8 but I keep recieving Error message -50 'the connection is unstable' and the DVD won't even attempt to burn. This is odd because Toast recognizes the drive and can read from it, but will not write to it. I checked the Lacie website and found some firmware updates, but they didn't help. They said they were updates for OS 10.3 and later, but maybe 10.5 is too late? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am completely stuck. Thanks.

Just about any external optical drive, other than Apple's, will work. For exampe, this one recommended by Macworld:
