Superdrive only read dvd installation

Ok, Here is my problem.
It started when the superdrive dont burn correctly the cd. I reinstall the Snow Leopard from the installation cd. And now only read the installation dvd. No more, no other dvds or cds, Sound its like cycled and never mount the cd. The dvds are clean and with really minor scratch. I have a macbook pro 15". Reinstalled, and the only dvd wants read is, the installation dvd. The dvds was original, (the other ones with try to read)

Hi Nancy
Open the System Preferences for CDs & DVDs and check to make sure that the When's are set to:
When you insert a blank CD: Ask what to do
When you insert a blank DVD: Ask what to do
When you insert a music CD: Open iTunes
When you insert a picture CD: Open iPhoto +(or other photo app.)+
When you insert a Video DVD: Open DVD Player

  • IMac G4 superdrive only reads DVDs after leopard install, not CDs-- HELP

I just installed leopard on my iMac G4 and now it only reads DVDs. It will not read CDs. I tried installing iLife and Office from CDs and it does not read them. However, it will play all DVDs just fine. Leopard itself seems to work amazing, only problem so far is the CD issue.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to fix this? I would really like to be able to read CDs as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Same thing here. Superdrive keeps behaving erratically since Leopard upgrade. Doesn't burn DVDs (some error message saying it doesn't recognize the media). Managed to burn a CD only after full PMU reset but doesn't read CDs anymore (burnt a blank CD on a iMac at work and my mini says the CD is blank). Reads movie rental DVDs ok though (but I don't care, I just want it to work).
Same sort of thing happened to me last year whilst running Tiger. Apple changed the Superdrive. That very model of Superdrive is a piece of rubbish and it looks like Apple will have to change it again. Very glad I tool the 3-year Applecare warranty.
So much for the "it just works", hey?.

ok... so I unplugged it for a couple minutes. Then, booted it back up holding commandoption+pr to refresh the PRAM. This seemed to work when the CD is in the drive. It will read whatever CD is in the Drive. But, if I eject it and then try to reinsert it, it doesn't work anymore. I don't know what is wrong. Do you think that the battery needs to be replaced or something? Can anyone help me?????

It's probable that the CD 'side' of the combo drive has failed.  That you cannot boot from the recovery CD is pretty much proof of the failure.

My TEAC DV-w28ECT driver used to read both DVD and CD now, it only reads DVDs. what happened and how can I fix it? I have Windows Vista

Try removing the CD/DVD Filters from the Registry.
When CD/DVD related software is installed (such as iTunes, Nero, virtual CD software), they install filters into the registry, which can cause compatibility problems.
    1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
If your CD/DVD programs stop working, you will need to reinstall them (preferably with an updated version).
This utility can remove the filters for you:

  • Superdrive stopped reading DVDs - Can't even mount image

About a month ago my Superdrive quit reading DVDs. It burns then just fine from iDVD, and other data, but will not read them, or any other type of DVD media/movies anymore. (even ones it just made) I can't figure it out. It reads CDs and imports data from CDs but not DVDs. So, if anyone can help me, it surely would be hugely appreciated.

Just for the fun of it and to observe the same thing from a different approach you may go to System Preferences . Once there select "Startup Disk" and you will find a "Target Disk Mode" button . Same thing but it keeps it that way as your Startup Disk and likely Target Disk as well . I imagine you will need to do an "Option" restart to choose other than a Target Disk from that selection . Option restart will present a screen which offers you which network or Disk you wish to use as a startup .
I have no idea what the problem is with the Mac OSX DVD software but the VLC free software just works and it has improved quite a bit these last few years . The System Preference's Sharing selection also offers a DVD or CD shared solution which hasn't worked for me yet . Good Luck to us !

  • Superdrive only reads CD, ejects DVD

    Hi,
I have a white Macbook, which is acting really strange. It came with a Matshita superdrive, which only reads CDs, and ejects out all the DVD's.
It used to work fine like 4/5 months back, but now whenever I put in DVD, it spins it for few seconds, stops, again spins and finally decides to eject them out.
Any reasons for this? And how to solve this issue?

So I guess you were not able to get it to boot from the optical drive, by quickly inserting the Mac OS X installation disc after a restart (or start from OFF) and holding down the C key...?
It may be hardware, but I was hoping you could boot the Mac from another system (such as the one on the Mac OS X installation disc), to rule out a problem with your current system installation. You don't happen to have an external USB drive with a Mac OS X installation on it, do you? You could back up your personal data (or clone the entire hard drive volume) to an external drive, do an +Erase and Install+ option reinstallation of Mac OS X, and test the optical drive.
Before you resort to something that drastic, try on more thing... Create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account (don't use Fast Users Switching). Test the optical drive from the new account. It's possible the problem is some corrupted preference file in your normal user account. If so, the drive may work in the new account.

  • Superdrive only reads Cds, DVDs are spit out, and burning always fails.

this is the information about my drive. I never installed the infamous 2.1 superdrive update, so i dont know if this issue is related. My driver stills reads cds, so it isnt totally dead. Any help would be sooooo much appreciated.
"Media: No" seems like the most likely culprit, what can i do to fix that? My brother has the exact same issue with his identical model of MBP (2.33ghz C2D).

Thanks. Of course I meant an erase and install.
I could understand it being the battery if no discs worked at all, but why would the drive work with the apple discs and no others? Is there a way of testing the battery without opening up the case and replacing it?
Testing the pram battery? Yes, make sure your PowerBook is set to the correct date and time. Unplug the PowerBook from the mains and remove your main battery. Wait a couple of minutes then put everything back to normal and start it. Make sure you also have turned off in the date and time setup the ability to use a network time server.
If your PowerBook still has the correct date and time your pram battery is working.
Why only certain disks? As I mentioned in my previous posting if the lens is dirty this could be the problem. For example on PowerBook I just worked on it was not reading disks until I happened to put in one particular one that it read. That told me the problem was intermittent and that the drive was working to a degree. Since this laptop was quite dirty/dusty I figured it could be a dirty lens since it is fairly easy for dirt to work it's way into the drive.
Took the quick and easy way out, however if it starts to act up again I may have to pull apart the drive I use a high quality photo lens cleaning brush to give it wipe but do not use any pressure as you can damage the wiring going into the lens and of course do not do this with the hardware powered! In a worse case scenario I use a dab on Kodak lens cleaning solution on a wadded piece of lens tissue but again I don't recommend this approach unless you're really really really gentle.
There are also cleaning CD's and the Allsop one isn't bad as it has a small row of brushes attached to it that wipe the lens when it passes by, my fear is causing damage if it knocks the lens and some VRDS drives this will not work with.

  • Superdrive only reads cds, dvds not working

    Help!
My almost 1 year old imac has stopped reading dvds, when you put a video dvd/ dvd+-r/w it spits them out, but this doesnt happen with cds, i dont get a message on osx or anything
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Make sure the DVDs are not cracked, smudged and/or dirty. See the following article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50448 How to Handle and Clean CD and DVD Discs
It's also possible your DVD/CD drive needs cleaning. CD/DVD cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
I would give Apple a call prior to your 1 year warranty running out if you do not have the 3 year AppleCare Protection Plan & see what they have to say. At least get a case# in case you do actually have a hardware problem prior to your 1 year warranty running out.
Hopefully, some other more knowledgeable users will chime in here to help you out.
    Good luck

  • Mac Premiere Pro CS5 update only for DVD installations?

Received notice that there is a patch or update for the newly released CS5 Premiere Pro for Mac. This does not appear within the app's check update menu option. Further, when the patch is located on Adobe's website, it indicates that it is for the DVD installation of PPro CS5 only. The version I work with was a download purchase, and no, it does not work with the available patch. The question is - anyone (Adobe?) know how the update is to be applied to download CS5 purchases, and why the difference anyway?

Not exactly. The patch applies to both DVD and downloaded installations. If you are getting the patch via Adobe.com, pick the one for electronic installations - it's there. We had a change to our installers this cycle and will require separate patches for DVD vs. downloaded installations for the time being.
If you are running Premiere Pro CS5 that was downloaded from the site, it does not include the patched code. We never make changes to the electronic versions of the code on Adobe.com - no matter when you download CS5, it's the same as the application that's on the DVD.
If you are updating via AUM, it will know which patch to install.

  • Superdrive only reads half the files on a DVD

    I am running Mac OS X v10.3.9 on a 1.25 ghz G4 iMac.
I got a commercially produced data DVD for Christmas. I don't know if it is dual layer or what, but it contains 5.35 GB of mostly acrobat files.
I can read and/or copy about half the files on the disk, the other half of them error out or lock up the finder when I try to copy and when I just try to read/open them the ball spins for a long time then just stops without opening anything.
All the files open without difficulty on the Windows PC at work.
    Is this weird or what?
I rebuilt my permissions and no improvement. Any ideas what else I should try?
    Thanks!!

Could the disc(s) in question have been burned using a utility that allowed
multiple sessions; and not been set to be used in both Mac and PC?
Some can do that and not be recognized. Third party disc burning utilities
can also add files to burned CD-RW or DVD/RW discs; but they may not
all be seen by the different optical drives and/or software in other systems.

  • IMac ejects CDs & Software Discs, only reads DVDs

Hello. I am not very good at working with computers, so sorry if I forget to add things. I was given a used one of these:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
It automatically ejects CDs, software discs, etc. The only type of disk it reads are DVDs, and at times, it still ejects them. How can I repair this? I do not have applecare since this is a second hand computer. Would it be very expensive to replace the optical drive? Do I need a new one? Can I run an external dvd/cd drive to just avoid this? Is the drive just dirty?
    Please help.

Thanks to a very helpful Apple Genius Bar expert, I have just saved over £100. After reading this forum I tried everything suggested to get my superdrive to accept my DVDs and to get my iDVD to produce a slideshow. After two weeks of frustration I took the whole iMac to the shopping mall. The genius reached into the counter draw and held a can of compressed air. After a minute of squirting the air into the dvd slot all my prayers had been answered. He told me that cleaning the drive like this work on about a third of all his clients. I have now bought a can of compressed air from Amazon for £4 and have it ready for the next problem the arises. (I have tried the same technique on the unruly kids, but it does not seem to work on them!)

  • Combo drive only reads DVDs and burned discs!

OK, so I had to wipe my harddrive and reinstall (restore) OSX 10.3 Panther.
After doing that the Combo drive does not mount any "factory" CD's.
It can mount the CD's I burned before the reinstall. It can mount DVD movies, but all program CD's & DVD's do not mount.
I have an external firewire DVD burner that mounts all these discs so the discs are not the problem.
The combo drive can read some CDs and DVDs so the optics are not shot, but the system decides not to mount!

You may want to try resetting the PMU. I had this exact same problem once where my '12 PowerBook G4 wouldn't recognize my iLife '05 DVD-ROM. Resetting the PMU caused it to be able to mount the DVD-ROM again. Here's a link to the Apple Knowledge Base Article with instructions for how to reset the PMU: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449.

  • Superdrive only burns dvd at 2x

I just bought a 12" powerbook with a superdrive and it says that it's supposed to burn DVD's at 8x. I put in a 16x and it said the max it could do was 2x so then I put in an 8x and it still won't write faster than 2x. Is the drive in the powerbook extremely picky about which types of DVD-R's to use or is there different issue here?

Do you have the option to burn at higher than 2x and it just won't burn successfully? I was burning at 4x (I have a model from last year) before upgrading to Tiger, and when I try to use media from the same spindle after the upgrade, I didn't have an option to try to burn at faster than 2x. Toast seems to burn at faster than 2x, but I like apple's disk burner better and would rather use that. I don't see how the drive could identify the media and lower it's speed based on that. If that's what it's trying to do, I don't really consider it a feature. I'll try to burn at the higher speed, and if it fails, I'll burn slower, or try different media. I don't need the computer to try to prevent me from burning a coaster when the media is as cheap as it is. sigh

My CD drive on my macbook doesn't read CDs anymore.  It only reads DVDs.  How can I get it to read CDs again?

Is it readable in a Windows computer?  If not then you can try Disk Utility to repair the drive-- although that may be dangerous too.
I haven't had this problem so I out of safe ideas.  There are ustilies out there.   I used the seach term "repair flash drive Mac OS X" to locate some of these.
If the data is essential there are pay-for services to recover data looked the price was in the range $50 - $1000
