Superdrive ONLY recognized in Windows(VMWare)

I have a MacBook 5.1 running OSX 10.5.7. My computer also has a VMWare partition running Windows XP. When I insert a DVD, it is not recognized by the Apple side of the computer, only the Windows side. I'd like it to run on the Apple side. How can I fix this?
Thanks - Paul

It doesn't recognize it even when VMWare is not running? I think VMWare (and Parallel) takes over devices like optical drives (you can turn that off, but it's on by default), so you'd only see it there if it's running.

  • Superdrive only recognized as Combo drive

I installed an HP 300n DVD+RW drive in my Power Mac G4, running Mac OS 10.5.6. Reading CDs/DVDs works fine as well as burning CDs. Somehow, part of OS X is only recognizing it as a Combo drive. System profiler recognizes it as a fully compatible Superdrive as seen in this picture: http://i42.tinypic.com/wa6pg2.png
The rest of the system thinks it is a combo drive as seen here: http://i40.tinypic.com/f359uu.png
When I insert a DVD-R, nothing happens. The Finder presents no dialog, it does not show up on the desktop, and Disk Utility does not realize that anything was inserted. Nothing happens differently than if I closed the drive with no disc in.
Why is it only working as a combo drive?
EDIT: Is it possible that the drive is +R only?
Message was edited by: Hippy Dippy Hippo

I noticed that all the Superdrive macs I have contain DVD+/-RW drives. I do not think any macs were shipped with DVD+RW drives ever. Therefore, the eject menu is confused and calls it a Combo drive. Different companies have different definitions of "combo" drives. The Compaq I pulled this from actually called it a Combo drive on the sticker on the front of the PC, despite having the ability to burn both DVD+RW and CD-RW discs. I think that the fact that it was DVD+RW drive confused the mac into thinking it was a "Combo" drive, though just in that eject menu.
The real problem was that I was trying DVD-R discs when I should have been using DVD+R. As long as I remember to use DVD+R rather than -R, then all will be well.

  • IPod Shuffle Not Recognized In Windows Or iTunes v7.0 - What Now?

    Hello everyone,
I am having the same problem as many who have posted here. I have upgraded my software to iTunes v7.0.1.8. I also accepted the auto update for my iPod Shuffle - 512GB 1st Gen to v 1.44 (I believe). Of course, now my Shuffle is not recognized in iTunes and is only recognized in Windows for less than 5 seconds (as I have monitored it). I am listing below all of the actions I have taken today.
As none of these have worked, my question is now what? Does anyone have any other suggestions before I take the dreaded step of calling support? Any help is appreciated.
I am not happy with this upgrade issue at all. I expect much better from Apple.
    Steps Already Taken:
    1. Reset iPod.
    2. Set Terminal Services to "Manual" and restarted my laptop PC.
    3. Changed all USB Root Hub entries power management options to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option" and rebooted.
    4. Assigned my external hard drive a different letter as it was assigned to "E" and tech support documentation suggested I changed it - I changed it to "M".
    5. I stopped the iPod Service via the Services and Application interface from My Computer/Manage, reattached the Shuffle, and started the iPod Service. The Shuffle was still not recognized.
    6. I uninstalled iTunes 7.0.1.8, the Apple Software update and QuickTime. I deleted all temp directories; program files folders and all possible traces of all three pieces of this software. I also deleted my iTunes library. I reinstalled all of this software and re-built my Library. NONE OF THIS WORKED!
My 30GB Video iPod works fine and always has - it is only the shuffle for which I have this issue any only since the upgrade.
What do I do now? If no one has another fix, I will be forced to call Tech Support after an experience with them over a year ago I would almost rather throw this thing away!

qswh - I too cannot play the songs that are loaded on the shuffle. Additionally, I get a green & orange light when I plug it into a USB port and then I either get a blinking orange light or a solid orange light from there after.

  • Windows 7 system only recognizing 16GB out of 32GB newly installed

    Hi all,
I'm having some difficulties with a newly built Windows 7 system, particularly with the RAM. The problem is I have installed 32GB of memory (8 x 4GB), but Windows is only recognizing 16GB.
My motherboard is an ASUS P9X79 WS. I have verified that this mobo supports well over 32GB of RAM, and I have updated the BIOS to the most recent update with the ASUS update utility.
I am using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I understand that some versions of Win7 put a cap on memory, but I don't believe that is the case here.
My memory is G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 240-Pin DDR3 1600. All sticks are the same and are not mixed with other brands.
I'm using the CPU-Z utility to examine my system, and it is reporting that 32GB of memory is installed. So it appears that only Windows is having trouble seeing it.
I am attaching the full CPU-Z report here, in case that is helpful in diagnosing my problem:
    http://swmontgomery.com/SWMONTY.txt
Any thoughts or suggestions as to what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    - Sean

    Sean,
I was rooting around this morning in your behalf and may have stumbled across something helpful for your quest. Bottom line, I think that you may have purchased the wrong G Skill sticks for your board.
The cpu-z report lists your RAM sticks as:
    F3-12800CL9-4GBZL (CAS 9)
    With XMP RAM timings as:
    XMP #1 9.0-9-9-25-34-2T (also CAS 9)
However, G. Skill's RAM Configurator does not show any "GBZL" RAM kits that can run 8 sticks in your motherboard at CAS9. They do show a different kit though with the GBZL designation for 8 sticks and CAS 10 settings!
Did you possibly purchase two 16GB kits and think that you could just run them together? If so, that is a bad assumption.
If my theoy is correct, and you do indeed have sticks that are not intended to run with: 8x sticks (32 GB), and 1600 Mhz, and CAS 9, then you have several options:
    1) Return the RAM and buy a proper set.
    2) Try changing your motherboard bios setting to run your RAM at 1333 MHz; the CAS 9 setting may work OK for that case
    3) Get someone to work you through how to do manual RAM timings for CAS 10; that would NOT be me!
    Regards,
    Jim

  • 5th Gen Ipod not recognized by windows or itunes. Have tried it all. Any Ideas?

Hello everyone. I have a 5th generation Ipod I recently purchased that I'm having what seems to be an common issue. When I connect the ipod to my computer via USB, the Ipod is not recognized in windows or Itunes. Occasionally the Ipod will charge when connected but not always. Though this is the same for the old wire I used and the new one I purchased today. Even when shown charging the Ipod is not recognized and there is no noise that a device has been connected. I have tried the 4 R's (without Restore) which I can't do, chaninging the drive letter, disabling start up software, uninstalling and reinstalling all Apple Software. I have tried connecting to another computer and have gotten the same result. When I check the diagnostic screen on the ipod it shows that a usb cable is detected. I have upgraded all my driver software, disabled and reenabled them. I'm almost 3 hours from the nearest store so that it out of the question. I'm curious if anyone has any other ideas and will try anything you think might be the issue and fix. Thank you for time.

From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes.  Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue.  To update or not to update?  And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista.  My workflow dictates 32b fyi.  One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126),  5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day.  My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12)  Windows mounts it just fine.  itunes is not having it.  no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano.  The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad!  Weird huh?  I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad.  Scanned for intruders.  Cut the Lenovo bloat.  Executed system and reg maintenance.  Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail.  NO NO NO.  Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad.  Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update.  :|
    So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^  last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0  but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod?

  • Ipod not recognized by windows or itunes

OK here's a humdinger: my ipod used to be recognized by my computer (meaning Windows XP), but then abruptly stopped in a catastrophic meltdown that completely wiped my ipod of everything -- didn't even show the menu. Fastforward, ipod is replaced. Windows will still not recognize it -- most of the time. The toolbar says USB device detected and hardware installed and ready to use, but the message that it's not recognized by Windows still appears. Now I said it was recognized sometimes. When it magically is (this is my only description for it because there is no apparent reason), and this is rare, usually after the computer has been turned off for awhile, the ipod will sync through about a fifth of my library then quit. The "disc cannot be found" message appears, and Windows stops recognizing and I'm back to square one. One would think that I now at least have a fifth of my songs on the ipod. Nope, just one for each time this has happened (being 2). Please do not respond with anything having to do with updating or uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, disabling USB 2.0, searching for E:\ drive, Windows Update, the whole appleipod.bat thing, updating itunes, or scanning for new hardware as I have tried these and a few other solutions. I'm just wondering if I'm completely, well, you know. Thanks for your time.

Your Touch is working correctly. Currently, without unsupported third party hacks, the Touch has NO disc mode. It will only show up in iTunes.
how do i put programes and games in my ipod touch
Right now, you don't. The SDK is scheduled to be released in Feburary. Then developers will be able to write programs that will be loadable.

    Hi Ted
I deleted the file and reconnected my device and it quickly grew to 600kb. I'm not sure exactly what you need and there didn't seem to be anything interesting at the end of the log, but I did find the following lines which, from what I can, is from the point when WMP tried to establish a connection with the device and failed.

  • IPod not recognized by Windows

Up until today, I have had relatively few problems syncing my 2g iPod touch. Earlier today, however, I had just ripped and CD and wanted to put it on my iPod, but got a repetative error message that the USB device isn't being recognized by windows. Initially, this was happening with an iPod nano (1g), but the nano seems to work fine now. During this whole period my iPod Shuffle has worked. All three devices have worked with a different PC.
Here is a list of troubleshooting steps I have taken:
    - Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes (made sure to use latest version)
    - Used multiple USB ports and multiple cables (all USB 2.0)
    - Restarted PC in question multiple times
    - Restored iPod using seperate PC... multiple times (latest firmware update)
    - Under "Device Manager," uninstalled driver, searched for updated driver, and reconnected iPod
    - I have already spoke with an Apple rep and performed the tips he gave me; I plan to call back but would like to see if anyone here could have any suggestions
    Other notes:
Every so often, iTunes will recognize the iPod and say that it is corrupted. When I click OK on the window, the iPod appears to be no longer recognized, and therefore isn't able to be restored with that computer.
I believe this is a problem with my computer, not my iPod, but any suggestions would help.
Both iTunes and my iPod touch are updated to the latest versions.

Well, I can certainly understand your frustration and you are by no means alone. There are many, I do many, posts and threads discussing the iTunes 8.2 bug. The only fixes, if you have the big bug, are to revert to iTunes 8.1 or to go to another computer that might be working. There is obviously something on some PC's that allows them to work. The problem is for those whose computers don't work, turning off anitvirus software, uninstalling every Apple thing, following every Apple official or unofficial work around or fix document, reinstalling Windows, or restoring your iPod Touch may not work for your PC. It almost sounds like a standard driver/hardware configuration that Mac may have missed or overwritten when they compiled their code. With the launch of 3.0, I suspect that they are completely focused on its successful roll-out.
On a side note, my wife's computer running Vista Premium was able to update her iPhone to the 3.0 OS without a hitch. I was thankful, but it made my issue more interesting. Is the issue an oversite by Apple for something in Windows XP or is it, again, a hardware/driver oversite that has caused this huge conflict, so the iTunes app cannot see the hardware? I don't know.
I hope and pray that Luvlabs advice works. It has for a select few, but it has not for a large group of ther folks. My personal recommendation is (should it not work), is to find a computer that you can sync to with iTunes 8.2. Upgrade your OS, and then resynce your iPod Touch to your computer. I am almost willing to bet that Apple tested the 3.0 OS with iTunes 8.2 thoroughly and it will work. I suspect their regression testing failed or was overlooked or was just not thorough enough.
I wish you the best and hope you get it to work.

  • My iphone 2g is not recognized by windows 7

i have an original iphone that is no longer recognized by windows.  I only have windows 7 running at this time.  Windows recognizes that "something" is there, but it cannot identify the iphone and disables it.  I don't think this phone has been updated to whatever the most recent OS is for the 2g.  The phone won't charge on any pc running iTunes either and can only be wall-charged now.
    Any ideas??

I would try updating iTunes first and then try again.

  • USB Device not recognized by windows

When I first plugged my iPod into my computer, it went through the whole recognizing new hardware thing. Installed the drivers, then said that the new device was ready to use. But then I get a message that says "Device malfunction, device not recognized by windows" or something to that effect. I only have 3 days to return this iPod...anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I'm not very familiar with the Windows OS but try this tip I picked on the forum up a while back, hopefully it might help.
    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. Click the Hardware tab.
    4. Click Device Manager.
    5. Scroll down the list of devices to the Universal Serial Bus controllers
    6. Click the plus icon next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    7. Double-click one of the indented USB Root Hub entries.
    8. Click the Power Management tab.
    9. Deselect the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
    10. Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
    11. Restart the computer.

Get a Virtual Macine software program, Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox, and install XP in a virtual machine.
You can't install XP in a Boot Camp Partition with Lion or Mt Lion, only Win 7.

  • How do I instal Omron blood pressure monitor soft wear on my Mac pro when the soft wear supplied only refers to Windows

How do I instal a Omron blood pressure monitor on to my Mac Pro.It came with an installation softwear that is only compatable with Windows.I have contacted Omron and they inform me that it should be possible using Bootcamp. How do I do this.I am using Lion OX.

Basically, the software Omrom uses is made by Microsoft and will only run on Microsoft Windows. There are two ways to run it on your Mac Pro, both require a copy of Microsoft Windows. Option one is to use Boot Camp, which sets aside a section of your hard drive to use for an installation of Windows. Once installed, you can then boot to Windows rather then OS X. The other option is to use something like VMWare Fusion to run Windows on top of OS X. A quick Google search has confirmed that the Omrom software has no issues running in VMWare.
In my opinion, VMWare is a simpler option. But it does require purchasing the VMWare Fusion software as well as a copy of Windows (I think they sell a bundled version of VMWare that includes Windows).

  • Songs disappeared - iPod not recognized in Windows or iTunes

Hi, I have had a 5th generation iPod for 8 months now and have a big problem:
After I charged it in a wall plug, all the songs disappeared from my iPod. It has happened to me once in the past but the songs then reappeared... don't know how that happened. Now, songs are all gone and Windows and iTunes won't recognize my iPod. I have reset it and since then, the screen keeps changing from the main menu to the Apple logo and then back to the main menu. My iPod will then be recognized in Windows for a few seconds, while the main menu is displayed on the screen, and then disappear. I have put it into disk mode and only then will Windows recognize it, but not iTunes. I have then restarted the iPod Service via Computer Management but once I reset my iPod to remove it from the disk mode, it continued changing from the main menu to the Apple logo. Since the problem seems to be with my iPod and not with iTunes, I have not tried to delete iTunes and reinstall it.
    Thanks for your help!!
