Superdrive or not?

I have a G4 iBook :-
Matshita DVD-R UJ-84SE
CD-write -R,-RW
DVD-write -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Does that mean I have superdrive or not?
I have been trying to burn using iDVD or Toast Popcorn a DVD made using the iBook onto DVD-R. It comes up with error messages and refuses to cooperate. But it works fine with DVD+R.
Thanks
Frances

What brand and speed are the ones you have tried,
Frances?
Memorex, for example, rarely seem to work well in
Mac drives.
Verbatim, Sony and TDK generally get on nicely with
Mac drives.
Cheers
Rod
This is true. I might add that trashing the Finder prefs can **sometimes** help with burning from the Finder. It has with my iBook G4 SuperDrive.

  • Superdrive will not burn on mountain lion

After installing mountain lion on iMac, superdrive will not burn or recognize cd/dvd. Have tried several different brands and burning software with same results.

If you have a CD or DVD, insert the disk and see what happens. If the drive kicks back the disk or gives you some kind of error message, then it's most likely a hardware issue, and might require a repair. However, if the drive seems to work fine mechanically, then it's a software issue.

  • HT3964 2009 macbook pro superdrive will not load discs

2009 Macbook pro superdrive will not accept discs. The loading mechanism appears not to be responding. The mechanism may be jammed as it will not allow the disc to be fully inserted. Last time I played a disc I had trouble ejecting it. I managed to get disc out can't remember how. Think the disc must have partially ejected and I managed to pull it out. Can anyone help?

    Hi kayj128,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has steps for troubleshooting the SuperDrive built in to your Macbook Pro:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
    Doesn't accept discs
Be sure to check your disc to make sure it is flat. You can check this by putting the disc upside-down on a flat surface. If the disc is bowed up on any side or in the center, do not use the disc because it might get stuck in the drive. Do not use discs that have anything attached to them or dangling from them (such as "sweeper" or cleaning discs).
If the drive struggles when you put in a disc or stops part-way, carefully look at the disc for labels that may be interfering. If there aren't any raised labels then try putting the disc in a few more times.
Try another disc to see if the issue is being caused by a specific disc.
Make sure you insert the disc far enough for the drive mechanism to activate. You need to insert discs nearly all the way before the drive will activate and pull them in. If you don't completely insert a disc, the drive will reverse and push the disc back out.
Allow the drive one or two seconds to accept the disc while it is fully inserted.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
If the drive repeatedly does not accept discs, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
    Cheers,
    - Ari

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • HT1338 What do I do if the superdrive is not working on my mac

What do I do if the superdrive is not working?

It might help if you could give more information. Is it with all disks, some disks, reading, burning, what?
What are you trying to do with your superdrive that is not working?
Also you could look in Disk Utility and see if it shows up.
If your mac is under warranty, you could bring it to the apple store and have them look at it and or replace the drive. If it's not under warranty, you could try replacing it yourself.
Or you could replace it with a SSD.

  • HT1338 After install mountain lion my superdrive do not work

i facing problem after install mountain lion 10.8.2. my superdrive do not work properly , when i insert a disk to superdrive after 20-30 seconds left cd eject. if you have any solution about solve this problem , pls tell me.

After recently upgrading my mid-2010 Mac Mini from Lion to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 my superdrive stopped working. I did a clean install of Lion to a blank SSD. Then I upgraded to Mountain Lion from the App Store. Then I tried reading a Windows 7 installation DVD. Any DVD I insert in the internal superdrive is not recognized by the system and is ejected after a few seconds.
I tried cleaning the superdrive with a DVD lens cleaner. This did not fix the problem.
I tried a SMC reset. This did not fix the problem.
I tried an NVRAM/PRAM reset. This did not fix the problem.
I read on a related thread...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4150905?start=30&tstart=0
...that many Mountain Lion users have experienced the same issue.
I opened the Console to look for new messages appearing after inserting a DVD-ROM into the superdrive. No messages appeared while the superdrive whirred a few times and then ejected the DVD-ROM.
Apple have been made aware of the issue but no patch has been issued. Mountain Lion 10.8.2 is the current version with no updates available at the time of writing.
Some users with dual-boot systems have booted into Windows and their superdrive works fine. This points to a software issue with Mountain Lion. The problem appears to affect some systems and not others.
Other users have reported that their superdrive works again after downgrading to Lion or Snow Leopard.
I'm going to try booting ML into Safe Mode to see if the superdrive works. I'll then try downgrading to Lion or Snow Leopard to see if the superdrive works ok. That at least will confirm that it is a Mountain Lion upgrade related issue and not a superdrive hardware failure.
Then we will have to wait for a patch from Apple to resolve the issue so we can upgrade to ML without losing use of the optical drive!

  • Superdrive does not open

Not sure when this started but my Superdrive does not open.
    I have tried;
holding down the eject button (for a long time).
Putting a straight paper clip into the hole on the drive
    holding down the "Apple"-e buttons.
I see under the system profiler that under ATA "This system does not contain any ATA devices. If you have any ATA devices installed, please check that they are connected and powered on."
Also under Disc Burning "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly."
Is it possible to just reinstall the driver.
I did reinstall the MacOSX 10.4.9 update
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Open it up and see if the power cable is loose.

  • Well, my macbook (alumminium late 2008) started to be too laggy, so I decided to erase the Macbook HD. What I did not know is that my Superdrive is not working, so i could not re-install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. What to do?

Well, lately my Macbook (Alumminium, late 2008) started to be too laggy. So I decided to erase Macbook HD, and reset it to the factory config. What i did not know was that my SuperDrive is not working... So I could not re-install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. What to do?

I'm not familiar with the 2008 Macbook, but will it boot from and external drive?  If so, non-Apple CD/DVD drives are not expensive and can be very useful.  A bootable USB flash drive might also work for you.  Again, I'm not familiar with the 2008 Macbook.
    Good luck,
    Ray

  • Superdrive(s) not working after mavericks install?

After installing Mavericks, my internal superdrives will not function properly. I have two superdrives installed on my Early 2009 Mac Pro with 2.93 GHz quad core Intel processor. I insert a disc, close the drawer, I hear some whirring/spinning sounds, then the drawer opens up. Same result with either drive.
I was trying to install tax prep software, get the same non-function if I try to run music CD. Cleaned the lens with compressed air, and also a CD Laser Lens Cleaner disc.
I use the drives occasionally. However, the last time, prior to Maverick download and install, both drives worked fine.
Are the drives supported by Mavericks?  Should I reset the SMC?
I have looked through some recent threads, and this issue seems to come up with increasing frequency, with many varied and sometimes conflicting results. I noted with some chagrin one pragmatic response of buying an external optical drive and forgoing the attempt to regain function of the factory-installed superdrives. Perhaps I didn't delve far enough into prior threads to find an answer.
    What are other's doing?

Look around - this is clearly a known issue to many users.  We have all tried EVERYTHING to get this to work - about the only solution I have seen is to downgrade your OS - that will get the drive working again.  Apple is ignoring the problem - sabotaging your equipment is not a concern of Tim Cook while he is going about ruining any innovation Apple ever had.  Seen the new itunes?  You get my drift.

  • Superdrive does not show with the other devices on Macbook Air

My superdrive does not show with the other devices in Finder any longer.
    Mid 2011 11" model
    OS 10.7.5

So the applications is causing failures and ejects.   Contact the software mfg. about resolution of this.
Have you tried the app TOAST?  Very reliable and highly popular.
You can drag any disk to the trash to cause ejection

  • After installing lion my superdrive does not read dvds

After the genious bar  installed lion my superdrive does not read dvds. I put in the dvds and the drive churns for a bout 3 minutes and the spits out the dvds full of scratches.
I have read online that other people have had similar problems with lion.
Is there fix for this? or does anyone know if apple care covers this?

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try loading a DVD again.

  • My Unused SuperDrive does not work? It keeps ejecting the DVDs.

    Hey everyone!
This is my first question on Apple Support Communites and I'm really happy!
I have bought a MacBook Pro and I have owned it since Dec. 31, 2013, and I am so glad! This was a second hand computer bought from a friend.
I bought this very computer for My SuperDrive, as I knew they were being phased out.
I put a CD in - and my Mac just spit it out.
It makes some noises as if the computer is going to read it, but it doesn't. Every Disc just ejects.
This works for all CDs alike: DVDs, Blank CDs, Audio CDs, You name it!
I really need my SuperDrive Working but it really isn't.
Note that the previous owner has NEVER USED IT and I also NEVER USED IT.
My Mac came with an installation disc for Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and I'm presuming that the Optical Drive was only used to install OS X.
This is my very first Apple Product so I don't really know much at all.
I called Apple and they told me to press a few buttons but that didn't work.
The Apple Employee told me that it SHOULDN'T Be failing as it is a relatively new machine.
I cleaned it out but I think that it is a Software Problem with OS X Mavericks 10.9.1.
Note: I am currently using 10.9.1 but will update to 10.9.2 when I have access to my Mac.
The Reason I say that it is a software problem because the DVD Playback file found in the folder: /System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A/DVDPlayback
Says Modified 23 Oct 2013, which was when Mavericks was released. Maybe I could get a hold of the original file to reverse the effect.
I would downgrade to Snow Leopard, but my SuperDrive isn't working :'(
Just so you guys know: My MacBook is an Early 2011 13.3" MacBook Pro.
I am also experiencing other difficulties but I won't get into them now.
I live in Australia and I am 14 years old. Sorry if I don't know much about Macs yet (but I guess I know quite a bit about Normal Computers).
Thanks for bearing with my long rant!
    Omi Jack

    Omi Jack,
It may be that the SuperDrive lens is simply dirty. You can test this out by purchasing an inexpensive DVD/CD cleaning ket - readily available from most electronics stores.
If that doesn't 'fix' the problem, it may be that the SuperDrive simply isn't functioning. You could purchase a replacement for it and install it yourself. I don't know Australian websites that specialize in Mac parts, but you can shop at the US website OWC and I kow that they ship internationally. You may also want to use their live chat and see if they know of a vendor in Australia that would have new SuperDrives in stock.
Try the cleaning method first. You could also take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP an get a diagnosis and estimate for repair from them but I would look into replacing it yourself first.
OWC also have videos that show you how to replace the SuperDrive in your particular model.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • External superdrive  is not working on  macbook pro 15 inch(2011 model) with  mountain lion

    Hi,
I try to install windows in my macbook pro via  bootcamp, but since I installed latest osx mountain lion on it, the external superdrive doesn't work anymore( even if on the startup mode, hardware can't detect it). superdrive works on my 2009-2010 mac mini server. help!

The USB SuperDrive only works on Macs without SuperDrive, so it's not compatible with your Mac. You have to use your internal SuperDrive to install Windows
