SuperDrive problems on MacBook (13 Inch)

Hey I'm having a problem with my MacBook (First model)'s SuperDrive,
Whenever I put in a CD or DVD it spins around for about 10 seconds or so
and then spits it out.
I recently tried swapping out the SuperDrive with a friend's with the same model
but it still did not work which singles it out as a software problem so I'm wondering if anybody would know what i could do.
Thanks,
Ian

I too am having the same problem and it has only just happened after installing the latest Apple Update for Leopard OS X 10.5.8. My Macbook is a similar model to kinnybee's. I had just reinstalled my laptop going back to a backup version from one year ago as I had some system conflicts of some kind causing applications to close immediately on opening. I was upgrading from 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 and then 5 days ago downloaded the latest Software update from Apple. Now I can play music CD's OK into iTunes etc but others including Blank DVD-R do not show up on the desktop and get ejected after 10-20 secs. The drive does not even get spinning properly but seems to hunt back and forth fitfully. I suspect this is a conflict/driver issue and APPLE NEED TO ADDRESS THIS as far as I can see. There are far too many posts about drive failures that seem to be more software than hardware related.

  • Apple Cinema Display 24-inch sleep problems with MacBook 13-inch?

    Hey guys,
Occasionally, my MacBook (13-inch, 2009) when connected to my Apple Cinema Display 24-inch screen will not wake up from sleep mode - whether in clamshell mode, or not. Even if i unplug the Display from the Macbook, the MacBook will not wake up.
This can be very frustrating when it occurs because i have no choice but to give the MacBook a hard shut down.
Not sure whether I'm the only one with this problem, but if there is any solution to this issue it'll be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers!

You might try running the MacBook in Safe Mode for a while to see if the problem still occurs when running safe. If the problem goes away while in safe mode, that would point to a problem in the configuration of your main account.

Apparantly there were some compatibility issues with the Sims3 and Lion. I believe there is a Sims3 update available if I'm not mistaken.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.

  • COD4 Lag on Macbook 13 Inch

I have the old white macbook 13 inch with 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo procesor, 2gb of ram and intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory.
I'm experiencing a lot of lag with the new cod4 that i had just purchased from the apple store and i was wondering if anyone knows what the problem is and how to fix it.

    Hi namillionaire,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
While I've not attempted to run CoD4 on the older MacBooks, the x3100 graphics processor is not supported as a minimum system requirement. Which means, while it may run the game it will not run it well and is unsupported by the game developer.
So regrettably, the lag you're experiencing is to be expected.
    System Requirements
    Mac OS v10.5.4 or later
2Ghz or faster Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    1GB of RAM
    9GB free hard-disk space
ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce FX7300 video card
    128MB of VRAM
    DVD drive
    Mouse and keyboard
Broadband or LAN connection for multiplayer mode
    Supported video cards: ATI Radeon X1600, X1900; Radeon HD 2400, 2600; NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 7600, 7800, 8600, 8800; GeForce Quadro FX 4500
Note: This game contains technology intended to prevent copying that may conflict with some disk and virtual disk drives. _*Intel integrated chipsets are not supported*_, nor are PowerPC (G4 and G5) processors.

  • Battery Problems with MacBook

I've been following the various threads about battery problems with MacBooks.
I too have experienced a problem with my battery on a 2 month old MacBook.
It suddenly refused to charge. It showed a battery icon with a black X through it.
I followed various suggestions that I found through various posts and support pages - eg. resetting PMU etc., even downloading the deep sleep widget which I found difficult to get to work - but nothing solved the problem.
Yesterday I went in to the Apple Store in Birmingham and waited until I could talk with one of the tec experts (incidentally, they were very helpful even though very busy and I didn't have an appointment). The tec guy said he though that the battery was faulty. It didn't work in another MacBook they had. But another battery would work in my MacBook. So, I was given a new battery, which seems to work fine now.
However, I have read in various posts that people have had the same new battery solution which works, but then the problem reappears with the new battery over time. I will wait and see. If that is the case, then I think it will point to the problem not being with the battery, but rather with the system, PMU, OS X, motherboard or whatever. So, I think it makes sense for us to post any difficulties we have so that Apple can see that there might be a problem with the batteries in MacBooks and start working on a solution. Otherwise, it will probably cost them a lost of money providing replacement batteries !

    Hey Christopher...
I posted the same in another thread. I'm not a big fan of duplicate posts... but it seemed appropriate in this case. Take a look at the last paragraph regarding discharging lithium ion batteries. I'm not sure if it would be the electronics in the battery that tell the MacBook it's time to charge, or the MacBook's power management unit...
"Talk about a jinx! I've had my MacBook since shortly after they came out (week 9). Never had any problems. I've calibrated my battery about once a month or so. It seems after my last calibration, I got the dreaded "X" in the battery indicator. My MagSafe indicator was green. System Profiler showed that there was no battery. I reset the PMU and the SMC firmware... also tried reseating the battery (one of those things you're sure won't work... but ya just have that little bit of hope anyway). Alas, nothing would bring my battery back. Took a trip to my local Apple store. I had made an appointment online, but still had to wait over an hour (they really need to enlarge their Genius area now that they have so many more machines out there). Told the Genius what the problem was... he swapped out the battery... but the one he tried was fully charged because he took it from a machine that was plugged in. So the tension was mounting... would it charge or not (I was hoping it was just the battery and not something else). He had me use my MacBook for a bit to drain the battery. I ran Parallels and did a Windows virus scan (that should drain the battery pretty fast)... After I got the battery down to about 90%, the Genius plugged it back in. To my delight, the MagSafe indicator went orange and started to charge the battery. With that, the Genius went in the back and got me a new battery. He had me stay there for a little bit just to make sure everything was okay. I'm sort of afraid to calibrate my battery now... at least properly as in letting it completely drain. I had done a few calibrations in the past without a problem, but it seems this problem tends to occur after someone does a calibration. I'm just happy it was just the battery.
I came across this little tidbit from the Battery University webiste:
Some lithium-ion batteries fail due to excessive low discharge. If discharged below 2.5 volts per cell, the internal safety circuit opens and the battery appears dead. A charge with the original charger is no longer possible. Some battery analyzers (Cadex) feature a boost function that reactivates the protection circuit of a failed battery and enables a recharge. However, if the cell voltage has fallen below 1.5V/cell and has remained in that state for a few months, a recharge should be avoided because of safety concerns. To prevent failure, never store the battery fully discharged. Apply some charge before storage, and then charge fully before use.
I wonder if there is a fault with some of the batteries that is allowing them to discharge below this minimal level, making them impossible to recover."

  • Can I safely use a slimline Superdrive in my MacBook Pro 17"?

Hi All. I've recently bought a new SuperDrive for my MacBook Pro. It turns out that the new Drive is slimmer than the old one. Because of this, there is one bracket that I cannot use to secure the drive into the laptop, as the fitting is not correct (the other brackets that secure the drive, are ok). Am I safe to leave it like this or should I send the drive back for one that is a direct replacement for my old one? The drive I bought is Model No. GSA-S10N. My old drive is Model No. UJ-85J-C. The reason why I would like to keep the new drive is because it writes to DVDR-DL and DVDR+DL, whereas my old drive only writes to DVDR+DL.

    Couple thoughts:
    1. ALWAYS put the drive in that fits the way it's suppose to. not a good thing to put one in that doesn't fit right as it can cause issues with ejecting disc or damage other parts.
    2. the +R stuff seems to hold up better than the -R. I only use +R discs now, I've seen a few -Rs fail after time & have spoken to PC people that had the same thing.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro retina 15". After unboxing, I turned it on and there was no any problem. But the second time I turned it on and charge battery, I got 2 problems, 1. If you get a checkerboard pattern it's because Apple block Airplay Mirroring of protected media.
    VLC Player may work.

  • How to I find a compatible, more powerful hard drive for my macbook 13 inch late 2008?

How to I find a compatible, more powerful hard drive for my macbook 13 inch late 2008?

There are many sources for compatible 2.5" laptop SATA interface hard drives and SSD's.
I've used Other World Computing (www.macsales.com) for a number of upgrades, and highly recommend them if you're in the US. OWC also posts helpful videos on YouTube showing step by step removal and installation instructions and the tools required for most Mac models. If your old drive is still functioning, but you're simply running out of space, you might also consider purchasing an upgrade kit that includes an external 2.5" drive enclosure with USB interface. Then you first install the new drive in the external enclosure and 'clone' the contents of old drive to it, then swap the old drive for the new one, and use the old drive in the external enclosure as a backup drive, to test new software and OS upgrades, or to store video, photos, and audio.
