Superdrive reads ok but won't succesfully write

Hello.
I have an imac PowerPC G5. I've burned many many CD's & DVD's over the 2 years I've owed this imac. Lately, many of the CD's & DVD's I burn on my imac are successfully burned but when played back on my imac or stand alone dvd/cd player there are skips, audio fades out, freezes up, etc.
I have a Superdrive (Pioneer DVR-K04F) which I used for read/write. Ripping DVD's or CD's onto my HD using this drive seems to work without problem. I can also play store bought DVD's or CD's or older DVD-r's/CD-r's using this same drive and everything works fine.
In order to remedy, I purchased a DVD lens cleaner with the tiny brushes and have since run the cleaning process 10+ times.
So, my question is: When the drive seems to play store bought discs fine and seems to rip store bought discs fine, but has trouble burning discs...what might be the problem? I'm guessing there are separate lenses for reading and writing (apologies for my lack of knowledge on how these things work)? So perhaps, the writing side of the superdrive is failing? Is this foreshadowing that the reading side will go soon too? Any suggestions on how to remedy?
Thanks very much for reading!
BB

I've been having issues with my Superdrive too. DVDs write ok, but burning CDs is a crapshoot. Audio CDs sometimes skip or have dropouts towards the end (which means the issues are at the outer edges of the CD, the opposite of a vinyl record).
Burning at less than 24x speed seems to help. I think the cheap CompUSA CD media I'm using is to blame. I need to stick with a better brand name. It's worth the expense. Cheap isn't cheap when you're burning nothing but coasters.
So that's my suggestion. Try a different brand, and burn at a slower speed.

  • DV7-1232nr LT smartcard reader sees but won't view/copy files despite admin/login; MS SW.

Despite being logged as admin, even sharing drive/folder, taking ownership, command prompt xcopy & in Vista Hm Prem, nothing will view or copy files to my PC! I've wasted 6 hours trying today, & the driver download is same as driver on LT, so that's no help--I had hoped to find an updated driver to fix this! The card is a Sandisk Micro-SD 2GB with adapter, fits & reads fine, but  "access denied" for every attempt! I even changed ownership on each file, but it didn't change the access denied problem. I rebooted, tried diagnostic startup (in case of conflicts), tried shutting user acct. control off, etc. Since it's NOT sdhc (2gb & < qualifies), why won't the reader allow access to my files??? Do I need to use a different card reader through USB??? Then what good is the card reader installed?
BTW, 2 files that weren't in the image folder were able to be copied, but not viewed, after changing ownership. However, none of the others could be copied to the image folder on SD card, never mind onto PC. My LT is <2yrs old, am having all sorts of problems, not happy with HP so-called support after 1 yr, no help on expensive purchase like this? The Windows upgrade expired after 1 yr too, plus I bought this in 2010, yet its full of 2008 devices & SW?! (Brand new special ordered through Staples locally). What's with the Office 60-day TRIAL, can't uninstall that without windows/boot probs & sound issues. I have free full Open Source Office installed instead & had to keep the other MS crap (Office & Works) to keep LT working!!!
I got so tired of this LT always needing fixing I shut it down for 6 mo.'s, come back & still spend more time fixing it than using it--and I'm an IT professional 20+ yrs. Linux &/or MAC sounding better everyday!

  • Cd/dvd rom reads cds but won't read dvds

I have a pbG4 titanium (M5884) with a MATSHITADVD-ROM (SR-8187) and am running 10.3.9. I can play cds fine, but when I attempt to insert a dvd, sometimes I hear something and it spits the dvd back out. Other times, it just holds the dvd and doesn't mount on my desktop. Is there any update that I need to install? I am trying to upgrade to 10.4 but my upgrade is on a dvd. Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi,
It could mean your drive has come to the end of the rainbow and needs to be replaced. However, you could try running a DVD cleaning disc in the drive.
Is it only the install disc that won't mount? Have you tried a movie DVD? Check the install DVD to see if it is dirty or scratched.

  • Superdrive reads Dvds but not cds?

I am a new convert from PCs. 2 days ago I bought a new Imac G5 it plays dvds without a problem but when I put in a blank CD or even a regular CD it takes about 30sec and just spits it out. It doesn't even show up on the desktop? Whats wrong? I update the mac. Some1 Plz help!!!

In the System Preference panels, there is one named CDs & DVDs
and it is possible the computer has been set to Ignore or eject blank
media of this type; since that option exists in this control panel.
System Preferences should be available in the menu beneath the
Blue Apple, and also in the Dock.
    {PS: Where did you get a 'new iMac G5' in these days of Intel® iMacs?}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook super drive reads ok but won't burn cd- noisy

my macbook is 2 months old. it reads cd's and dvd's just fine.
but i tried to burn an audio cd and it gets stuck in the initializing mode
and then makes this awful sound. it does not eject the disc. i have to quit the burn process and then eject the disc. i have tried using different brands of discs,
all that seem to work fine in an older ibook i have.
    is this drive defective?

I'm getting the same issue. What somebody else on these boards referred to as a "coffee grinder" noise when burning a CD-R. All I have right now is a stack of Verbatim 52x CD-Rs, and some work and some don't (the ratio is about 1:1). I need to find other media to try out.
I've never had this issue before in the year that I've owned my MacBook, and I've burned many, MANY discs.

  • R3000 - New battery reads 77% but won't operate laptop

    Hi,
    Compaq R3000, Celeron 2.8Ghz
This laptop came to me pretty much unused because of a failed Hard Drive. Successfuly replaced hard drive.
Original battery was showing 0% and refusing to charge so I assumed it was faulty (after several years of non-use) and replaced with a compatible battery. New battery is recognized by laptop & read 77% on first boot while running on Mains adaptor. Left charging overnight - in morning charge level still showed 77% but laptop will not run at all on the battery.
    The new battery spec http://www.espow.co.uk/compaq-presario-r3000-laptop-batteries-p-5852.html
Have I got a faulty new battery or might something else be wrong?
    Many thanks.

You will have to restore them to another Mac, TM is not my specialty so I will let another poster take you down that road.
    Good luck

  • CD/DVD reads disc, but won't allow downloading

I'm having an issue where my CD/DVD drive recognizes the CD or DVD, but when I try to download the content from the disc I receive error messages. Happens with any CD/DVD. For example I loaded the Turbotax disc and it recognized it as the Turbotax disc, but the content couldn't be downloaded to the PC. I'm wondering if I inadvertently deleted and app? Thoughts?

    Hi mikejdale
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
When you insert the TurboTax CD a window should open that lets you drag the TurboTax icon to your Application Folder.
    Try this:
    1. Close all open windows (the TT installer window my not come to the front of other open windows)
    2. Drag the TurboTax icon the the Application Folder in that window.
    3. Once TT is finished downloading eject the CD.
    3. Update TurboTax

  • DLT writes perfect, but won`t read!

    Hi,
because of one stupid replicator, who as a problem to take a burned DVD-9 master, we had to pack out our old DLT-Tape (which was dead), bought a new one, which writes faster than anything else which I have previously seen (Quantum DLT V 4) - but won´t read the data on the just written tapes.
It doesn´t matter if I write it in any DDP or CMF format. Any suggestions? Our G5`s won´t recognize the tape, so we updatet a G4 with FCP Production Suite and OS 10.4.9
Thank you and a nicer weekend than mine

i have the ultra scsi converter fr1sx and i make a dlt with the quantum 4000, but when i need reed the tape with dvd studio pro, don´t read it and appear a error message.
Is the ultra scsi converter fr1sx appropiate for make dlt with imac???

My DVD drive will read and play but won't write. Device Manager says it is a Matshita UJ-850S. I have upgraded to XP Pro sp3 from vista. I suspect that it is a driver issue but I have searched and can't find one that makes it work.
Has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions

Not a driver issue, or it wouldn't even read.  You are missing the program required for disk writing that Toshiba suppiles with factory installs, but is lacking in commercial versions of Windows.  It is not available as a download, only as part of the factory image.  Since you changed to XP, You'll need to buy some disk writing software like Nero or Roxio.

I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?

    Drive Partition and Format
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

Well, you're not telling us anything, that's the problem. No offense, but really, just saying that something doesn't work is not gonna yield any answers that would help. We wil lat least need a tiny bit of info about your system - operating system, possibly hardware specs, definitely info about security tools and otehr Adobe software...

  • My SuperDrive reads and writes these formats. Is this right?

OK, another SuperDrive thread, I'm sorry! After some experimentation last night, I came up with this list of what my drive does.
Read Verbatim 4x DVD-RW movie - All OK (didn't see it first time though)
Erase Verbatim 4x DVD-RW - Toast & DU says Incompatible Format! Erased it in my external instead.
Write Verbatim 4x DVD-RW - Drive spits it out. So no erase or write, just read.
    Read Imation 4x DVD+RW - Doesn't recognise there's a disk in there
Erase Imation 4x DVD+RW - No (see above)
Write Imation 4x DVD+RW - No (see above)
    Write Imation 8x DVD-R - OK
Write Verbatim 16x DVD+R - Failed in Toast
    So I can read DVD-RW, DVD-R, and write to DVD-R. That's it!
Mr drive is this according to System Profiler:
    PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-106D:
      Firmware Revision: A612
      Interconnect: ATAPI
      Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
      Cache: 2000 KB
      Reads DVD: Yes
      CD-Write: -R, -RW
      DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
      Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
      Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
      Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
      Media: No
So it doesn't do what it should do. Any clues? Can I upgrade the firmware? Or when I sell the iMac do I just include a list of what the drive is capable of?
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25ghz, 17" USB2

David, rather than expieriment your Provile from your Pioneer tells it all except a couple of very important things.
The Media quality, in other words
    The problem is multi-dimensional.
First check in your particular profiler on EXACTLY what type(FORMAT) of DISK's your burner will burn.
Next please do not just randomly go out and buy a spool of 30 50 or 100 disc's because they are on sale.
There is a HUGE difference in the type format disc's you buy
There is also a HUGE difference in the BRAND you choose, some are junk.
There is also a HUGE Difference in the SPEED of the media you choose.
If any one or a combination of any of the 3 mentioned above can cause burn error's or no burn at all or spit the disk out.
So it is a good idea to do a little homework on your Optical Drive and see just exactly what it is capable of and what it will use for media.
    (ONE LAST NOTE)
Many of the Media Manufactures are becomming aware that many of the Apple Burners are having trouble with there Media. Maxell has just come out with a brand new one that is. Maxell 16X DVD-R.
The key is read the packaging. this new media tells you that it will burn at any speed from 1X through 16X, and it works very well on the older Optical Drives. I also opt to use the individual that include the cases there seems to be much better quality, not like that of the spools.
Remember Apples Drives to date are much pickier than those used in the PC community.
    Cheers Don

I can read but I can't write to an external drive.
How do I change permissions? None of the helps here on the discussions have helped.
Why would a computer company let me read files but not write? Hahaha. This is insane.
I have to write computer files for work. It's a project due this morning.
Man, I'm going to have to go back to PC.
Just need the compter to write files.

If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.
