Superdrive replacement help

Hi, my superdrive died some time ago (model matshita uj-868) and i want to replace it with a new one but not the same model (if it's possible) can some one tell me what model should fit in my macbook pro unibody I know it should be 9.5mm high and have SATA interface but I couldn't find one similar to the one I have.
Can some one could help me please...
thanks in advance

If you have the Late 2008 MBP listed in your signature, you are covered by Apple's one year warranty. If your superdrive 'died', you should contact AppleCare for service (there's a Contact Us link at the bottom right of this page).

  • Macbook pro 17" superdrive replacement help!

I have a macbook pro 17" intel core 2 duo 2.16G, a while back i downloaded a firmware update for the UJ-857D which i belive ruined my hard drive as many others have claimed as it will attempt to read a disk then spit it out,I have tried cleaning, resetting, everything. I just decided to go ahead and purchase a new superdrive, well can someone tell me if this superdrive.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270541678915&ssPageName=STRK: MEWNX:IT#ht3760wt1167
will fit the macbook pro i have, mine says its a UJ-857D and this is a UJ-857-C,will i have any problems installing this superdrive into my MBP,if so I can return it and where could i purchase the correct drive? I would go to apple but I do not have the apple care any longer and its just too much of a hassel or drive to go to the store if theres nothing they will most likely do. Thanks!

I've had this problem with the SuperDrive numerous times and each timed fixed it very easily.
Don't bother with DVD cleaning discs. Just get compressed air and insert the thin nozzle in the slot. Then move it from side to side. Then repeat. Don't worry about messing up the inside of your MBP as the SuperDrive is a sealed unit.

  • Powebook overheating since Applecare superdrive replacement

    Hello all -
I'm posting this question in discussions because I can't seem to find an email address by which I can contact Apple support directly.
My Powerbook G4 (12", 1.33GHz) is overheating regularly, even when the Energy Saver control panel is set to Better Energy Savings. By overheating I mean that the machine gets hot to the point that it goes to sleep, even though the fan is running at full speed. The Powerbook never overheated before the computer was sent in to Applecare have its superdrive replaced in June. I believe that something went wrong in the reassembly of the computer, but the computer is now out of its Applecare extended support period. With whom should I speak to try to get this resolved?
    Cheers,
    Alex
Here's the complete story, for anyone who's interested.
At the end of May, I noticed that the superdrive in my Powerbook was failing - something inside had come loose and discs physically would not load. I finally got around to dropping my Powerbook off during the middle of June - right before my wife and I left for an extended vacation. After I got back to the US, two months later, I started using the powerbook again, and noticed that it was shutting down randomly due to (what seemed to be) overheating. However, I attributed the behavior to bad web page design (certain web pages with a lot of advertisements have always made the machine run warm - I figured that something had changed on the pages which caused the machine to overheat). But now, after about a month of using the Powerbook, I've realized that all sorts of programs which in the past ran without any problems now cause the laptop to overheat. Backup software, DVD software, iTunes, and various games - not just web browsers - all cause the machine to shut down. I've taken to running the machine in "Better Energy Savings" mode all the time, just because it shuts itself off less often. But off course the Powerbook runs much more slowly now...
The Applecare Extended coverage period for the powerbook ended while I was on vacation - which is part of why I took care of the superdrive problem before I left, even though I knew that I would not be in the US to test out the computer when it came back from Apple. It seems that the repair caused the problem that I'm now experiencing. Perhaps a CPU heatsink wasn't mounted properly, or the fan was somehow incorrectly installed? In the end, it doesn't really matter, but I'd like to get the problem corrected. However, I'm presently out of the United States (again) and in a country where there are no Apple stores. I won't be back to the U.S.A. until the beginning of November. In the meantime, I'd like to get this problem resolved so that I have a more useable computer. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Return your Powerbook to Apple. Although the extended warranty has ended, it appears the last repair caused a new problem. If you want to talk to someone first, you can contact Apple customer care via phone.

  • Positive Superdrive replacement experience

I just wanted to post my superdrive replacement followup.
I sent my macbook in last Friday for a bad superdrive (after only having it for 24 hours). My problem was that no matter what cd/dvd I inserted, the drive made some noise and spit it back out. I recieved it back today after only being away for 5 days. The service document said that my superdrive and the plastic piece where I rest my wrists was replaced (not sure why).
So far so good. I tried a bunch of cds and dvds. No ejecting and no problems reading. (also no scratching). I know that there are people out there who got the superdrive replaced only to have it go bad a few weeks later again, but I will try to stay positive. I ran an entire Mac OS X install tonight and it never hiccupped.
I really just wanted to say that as bummed as I felt a few days ago, my experience with apple support has really impressed me. I never would have got that kind of service with my HP computer.
This was my first experience with apple support, and I couldn't be happier.

Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know about your great experience with Jaevel! I'm glad he was able to make sense of the billing confusion in such a friendly, kind manner. I agree with you completely- agents like Jaevel are exactly the type of people Verizon should keep around!
I'm going to track Jaevel down and pass along your kind note to him and his manager- I know it'll make his day!

  • Superdrive replacement in flat panel iMac

I have seen this addressed in bits and pieces on many different forums, so I figured it was about time to try and get this information in a place where it could be easily found.
The problems encountered by many iMac G4 flat panel users with their superdrives seem to have only one common solution.......replacement of the drive.
There are numerous fixes that at best are temporary solutions to a problem that will only get worse until the drive fails completely.
This model iMac seems to be extremely susceptable to the accumulation of dust, which in turn causes the internal parts to overheat, which probably leads to premature failure of the laser components of the drive.
In 10.4, the common error is related to laser power calibration failure, in which the laser is unable to either read or write to the disk in order to determine the correct write speed for that disk.
Earlier versions list similar problems, but the wording is different.
Using a different type of media can be a temporary solution, if the problem is just beginning, but at best, probably a few burns is all you will get.
Using a lens cleaner will help in some cases, but also temporarily if internal dust is the culprit.
Other solutions, including burning to a disk image, then using disk utility to burn the dvd will also work, occasionally, as will creating a new user account.
The ultimate solution is replacement of the optical drive, and a good internal cleaning of the iMac.
Cleaning alone may solve the problem, however, since you already have the unit disassembled, and the optical drive removed for proper cleaning, it is best to go ahead and replace the drive, since the newer, dual layer, 16x drives are relatively inexpensive, some for under $40.00 US. Also a good time to install that new HD since it is removed along with the optical assembly, and even a little extra ram.
You should be aware that doing this yourself will no doubt conflict with Applecare, if you have it, but on older models without the warranty, most people should be able to do this themselves.
This URL .......http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/iMacg4/imacg4takeapart.html...........provides a take apart guide and step by step directions to replacing the components, and is very easy to follow. Make sure that if you don't have a second computer, that you print these pages prior to beginning disassembly of your iMac.
It is really not as complicated as it looks, and if you have any mechanical ability, and a little patience, it can be easily done within an hour.
Also be aware that if you install a dual layer drive, You will not be able to access the dual layer feature in iDvd unless you install a patch from this website........http://www.hardmac.com/niouzcontenu.php?date=2005-05-26#4090.............the file name is MBiDVD4ALLDUAL.sit.
This will allow you to use those dual layer disks with iDvd.
There are numerous drives that will work in your flat panel iMac, personally, I installed the Pioneer 110D, and so far, it has worked perfectly, including burning the dual layer disks.
The 110 is actually slightly smaller than the original drive, and was easier to install, than the other model was to remove. Most drives are standardized in size, and all mounting screws positioned in the same place, so as long as the drive you choose is not larger than your original, it should work.
I hope this helps a few of you out, I know about the time I spent searching for answers before finally giving up and just buying the new drive.
You sure won't regret being able to burn at 16x, or getting those ninety minute movies on one disk.
    Good Luck

I think you meant to post this in the imac area of the Discussion forum, this is the Feedback forum.
The info you have complied would be best posted there.

  • Problem with 'Import Asset' after SuperDrive replacement

Hello. My SuperDrive was dead earlier this year and I replaced it last month. Ever since, I have been having trouble doing 'Import Asset' on DVD Studio Pro. Whenever I try to import a QuickTime(.mov) file, a message of "Incompatible Format" will pop up thus stop me from importing anything.
Could someone help me with this please? Any ways to fix it? Thank you.

    Dear David,
Thank you for answering my question. Would you suggest me to reinstall DVDSP? I installed everything as a chunk with my Final Cut Studio discs. Can I reinstall it individually?
My DVDSP worked fine until my Superdrive crashed earlier this January. It has been like that ever since, even after the drive was fixed. I can burn DVD directly without DVDSP. I am sure DVDSP can burn DVD too, but I don't know what happened and now the "import asset" function won't work anymore. I don't know what to do.

  • Superdrive replacement not working? Try "repair disk permissions"

Like many other folks, the superdrive in my iMac 7,1 died. I ordered a replacement from Powerbookmedic and installed it following ifixit's guides. Upon booting the iMac I found that the SuperDrive would accept a disc and the iMac saw the SuperDrive but OS X wouldn't recognize any disc I put in the drive and after trying to read it would eject it. After trying various things, I found that other users on my iMac were able to use the new drive just fine, it just wasn't working for me.
I tried various fixes but in the end "repair disk permissions" under disk utility did the trick. Posting here in the hopes of helping others. Joel

I cant access any of the files on the hard drive to back up. Do you know of a link on how to format and reinstall. It would be my first time. I have diskwarrior and it will not load at all.

  • A SuperDrive Replacment?

    Hello
my superdrive won't burn DVD-R that use to work, and a cleaning did't help.
So my question is, what is the best replacment I can buy for my MacBook Pro 5.3?

    Go to this page:
    http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
Select the Drive Type you're looking for from the topmost pull-down menu. Note that "Superdrive" is not a drive type and doesn't appear in the list.
Very few users posting here have any experience with more than one or two different drive models out of the dozens on the market past and present, so it's not likely that anyone here can recommend the "best" one.

  • Superdrive replacement?

My Superdrive has stopped working (just outside guarantee). What drives can I use as replacements (and buy in the UK)? What is supported by Apple? I've seen UJ-45J, are there any others?

    Toby Hamilton wrote:
Did Apple know that all of the Mac Mini Super drives were going to stop after a year or two?
It seems as if it's almost every Mac Mini with a Superdrive. And this was suppose to be my intro to Apple?
It really doesn't make me very confident in my next Apple purchase.
I have not had any Mac mini DVD drives fail (yet), only much older PowerMac ones. If it is merely read/writing problems rather than it completely dying and not being seen any more by the Mac, then it might simply be a matter of using a CD/DVD lens cleaner disk.
The Mac mini draws air in through the DVD drive slot and while there is a brush behind the slot to help keep out dust, some will still get in.
The failures I have had on old PowerMacs have been total such that the drive is not seen anymore (indicating a failure on the drives circuit board).

  • QUICK ANSWER.Apple iPod touch 2nd gen. Digitizer and LCD replacement help.

    Hi,

Took it out, now I googled why it dos t work and it said "logic board" how do I know if it's broke. iPod touch 2nd gen 8gb

LCD stands for Liqued Crystal Display and isn't the problem.

  • RTC (CMOS-BIOS) Battery Types and Replacement Help

    hi,
    my notebook: hp g3050ea
i'm trying to replace my RTC battery. Today i bought a CR2032 Lithium Battery. But after that i noticed my computer's RTC battery is little different. İt is Mitsubishi CR2030E
i'm not sure if  it is the right part for my pc. Can I use any CR2032 battery or should I use CR2030E ?
    i bought this battery
     Mitsubishi CR2030E

I think that you may use it. The "E" on the old battery could be "enhanced" and the size is the same as I noticed. The main issue should be the size and the voltage. Both are the same..

  • Superdrive replaced: now doesn't work: FRUSTRATED IN CT! Cursed?

Replaced a faulty Superdrive inside the PB. Before putting it back together I tested the drive and it worked (sucking a disk in) /mounted. After putting it back together it doesnt work! Yes it shows up in the profiler. The disk will go in 95% of the way by hand--doesnt get grabbed inside. There is no noise or sense of anything moving inside the drive other than my manual inserting of the disc.
I reopened it and checked the cable and its fine and attached. No luck.
    Ideas? Im going nuts!
(could it be related to my previous post of not getting a startup chime; yet boots?)

The drive does not show up in System Profiler. "Disc Burning" states "No burning device was found."
This is the original drive that came with the computer and has never given me a problem until this upgrade.
No discs are recognized when put into the drive, I tried four different ones besides the OS 10 Tiger install disc.
I will add that when I did this install of Tiger, there were two discs provided and when the 1st one was done installing, it asked for the second one to be loaded, but would not eject the first one. The tech at the place I ordered them from said I should have done a "custom install" and had me reinstall the upgrade by restarting from the first disc. If I'd known that before I put the first one in, then I'd never have had to call the tech!
I have no other problems with the machine or softwre now other than the drive issue.

  • IMac Superdrive Replacement

My iMac's superdrive is damaged and needs to be replaced. It's in Corfu, Greece and there is no official service there. However a good friend of mine is a technician I trust so I only need to buy the superdrive and send it to him. Can you point me to stores selling replacements and shipping them to the UK?

  • Library replaced - help?

    Hi,
I wanted to download recent purchases into my library on my laptop, so they were all in one place. I followed the instructions, but it appears to have replaced the library with these songs and the rest of it has disappeared! Help! Thanks

Why can't you recover the account?  The account is not tied to the computer... simply log in.
The media must be moved from one computer to another, simply signing into iTunes does not cause it to magically appear.
