SuperDrive Spits dvd's off the desk

I'm not sure if anyone else has had this problem but I'm sure others have ... I work in a apple retail store and I have had 3 other computers have this same issue .. and there all have been the first version of the Imac G5's. it seems that they have an over active drive eject problem or something. Mine seems to spit the disks out and they bounce once off the desk and then on to the floor. Now it may not be a huge deal .. but when you spend over 2 grand on a computer you expect this things to function properly.
So for the first 3 weeks I had my computer it worked fine .. then it started to act up like this.. I called apple and they took me threw the hoops and I resetting the PRAM and the NVRAM and trying to eject from open firmware mode .. I even went into yellow dog and tried to un mount from there and still it spits the disc off the desk. So they sent me out a new superdrive, after installing the drive everything seemed to be just fine and my computer was back in action.. but once again 2 weeks later this time it happened again... I called apple and jumped threw the hoops again but with no luck yet again.. now they say they i have no idea what the problem would be.
I contacted my local AASP which happens to be another store under the chain i work for and they have no idea what it might be either other than to replace the midplane...has anyone else here come across this problem
any help would be welcome
Thanks in advance

I have been experiencing the same problem with my iMac G5. I've had the computer since April and only began experiencing the bouncing disk problem in the past week or so. The normally quiet superdrive was getting louder and it started spitting all disks anywhere from a few inches to well over a foot out of the drive.
I took it to my local Apple Store (where I bought it) and after leaving it for a couple of days, they replaced the drive. Assuring me that they tested it, I took it home yesterday.
Well, the new drive (which is quiet) is still spitting them out as before and is making the disks unusually hot as well. A call back to the Apple Store was useless and they told me to call Apple Care.
The Apple Care rep spent well over an hour with me on the phone only to tell me that he didn't know what it was. He said this was a new problem for him and suggested that I take it back to the Apple Store and have them replace the logic board and power supply (even though they both tested well with him). He didn't commit to whether this would actually solve the problem.
I have two iBooks and an iMac G3 which have been flawless, so I've been a satisfied Apple user for years and don't know whether his suggestion makes sense. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

  • Imac G5/PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-K04L - suddenly spitting DVDs?  Help!

    Hello,
I have looked at the other threads on this and nothing really matches this:
    1. It used to work about month ago.
    2. CDs are ok.
    3. DVDs go in, about 10 secs, come back out.
    4. Same DVDs work fine on my PowerBook.
I've tried resetting PRAM in case that worked.
    Any ideas gratefully received.
Bought in May 2005 so well out of warranty.
    Many thanks for your help,

  • Superdrive spits up any CD or DVD, inclusive boot DVD

From yesterday on, Superdrive spits up any kind of CD or DVD, inclusive original Boot DVD, and also a Laser Lens Cleaner CD.
Any tip? is that a hardware failure?
    Thanks!

This sounds very much like a hardware failure. To be certain, follow these steps:
Restart the computer holding down the option key.
When symbols appear on the screen, insert the original install DVD.
If the issue occurs at this point the issue is definitely hardware, as no software has been loaded yet. Contact Apple to arrange a repair.

  • Hi Group: I think my "Macintosh H.D." disappeared off my desk top when I cloned the drive in setting up ext drive. The space at top rt corner went blank, the drive shows in disk utility, startup window, in the finder it shows up as "my Mac Pro'Help"

    Hi Group:
In trying to set up an ext Drive for different purpose, I cloned my Macintosh H.D. drive and saved on another drive. Then I cloned the data on the Ext, used my orig. DVD to install sy on it, 4 attempts before it would accept the install. Did a reboot to confirm install no luck, and noticed that the space at top rt of D/T blank, the 2nd,3rd,& 4th bay Drives appeared below a blank space. My Mac H.D. appears in startup window & D/U but in finder Pref it is listed as " my name Mac Pro". The desk top has stayed the same, I can use startup to S/U  in all drives with a Sy, including Macintosh H. D. altho no icon or other clue that I am booted in it.
During all my attempts with cloning and saving etc I think I made it invisible. I am not comfortable to try Terminal to find out. I will be totally thankful for all suggestions.
I am using a Mac Pro (2008) with OS 10.6.8
The external drive is on Firewire
I used Disk Utility to set up drive
    I used  CCC to clone
    Thanks Funoptics

go to finder preferences then side bar. make sure hard disk is ticked.

  • I'm running out of hd space on my MBP with Mavericks. How do I move my Photoshop 5 app off the computer for more space. How can I store the PS5 app on DVD or on my backup hd for a future reinstall on my next Mac?

I'm running out of hd space on my MBP with Mavericks OS. How do I move my Photoshop 5 app off the computer for more space, and store the PS5 app on DVD or on my backup hd for a future reinstall on my next Mac with larger hd?
    Thanks

    slaglejrp,
perhaps it would be less expensive to just install a new disk with a larger capacity on your current MacBook Pro, rather than plan on buying a new Mac with a larger disk? Once your current disk has been cloned to the new disk, and the new disk has been installed into your MacBook Pro, that would allow you to keep Photoshop 5 on your current MacBook Pro.

One way to to put the videos into an iDVD slideshow
and set iDVD's Slideshow preferences to always scale slides to TV Safe Area.
However, some users have reported that the audio quality using this method is lessened.  I've not noticed it but then I don't have a good ear when it comes to that sort of thing. If you add more than one video in the same slideshow do not select any transition.

  • How can I play mini DVD's on the USB superdrive?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mini DVDs don't work with the Apple USB SuperDrive or with any disc drive included with Macs. You have to use an external DVD drive compatible with mini DVDs

  • HT2801 Why doesn't my dvd play in the usb superdrive?  I have a Retina Display Macbook 15"

I have a 15" Macbook Pro w/ retina display.  Why doesn't the dvd play in the external usb superdrive?

Again, it's a regularly purchased (Hollywood or so) movie DVD, yes? And it's not only this one DVD, but every other as well, yes? Please confirm.
If so, it's the DVD Player app that hangs for whatever reason, and not a broken drive.
Not that it's a "final solution", but just to see if you can generally play DVD's on this machine, would you mind installing and trying MPlayerX to play a DVD? It's a little app from the App Store, free of charge and much used around the globe. (Actually, you may want to keep it as it plays many more different formats...)
Edit: Forgot to say that you will probably need to launch the DVD manually from MPlayerX, most likely after the DVD Player app crashed again.
Let us know what MPlayerX does. And still, don't forget confirming the above, thanks.

  • Why can't I browse jam packs right off the DVD?

I'm trying to use my jam pack DVD's without taking up space on my hard drive. There must be a way to browse jam packs straight off the DVD without installing them. How can I do this?

You'll probably need to show invisible files in the Finder. Try this, for instance:

  • How to pull the videos off the burned DVD

I burned all my stuff on a dvd and was wondering if i can get them back off the burned dvd

    Hello Derek,
Yes you can but you'll need to download and install MPEG Streamclip, and purchase and install Apple's MPEG Playback Components.
You can then rip the DVD files and save them as Quicktime movies.

  • DVD Studio Pro2 does not let you turn off the subtitle in the DVD Player

    Hello
When I create a DVD in DVD Studio Pro 2 with subtitles and I do not activate the VIEW option beside the Subtitle (in Advanced tab), it does not let me turn the off the subtitle in the DVD Player.
    What could be the reason?
    Thanks for your help
    Christoph

Thanks for your interest to help me!
What I did in the three different language selection I selected the audio track and the subtitle.
But I did not select by any flag "View" = which would force it to play the subtitle.
Is there some where else where it has the force option to play always subtitles?
On the DVD Player I can change the subtitle but *not turn it off* by Mac, Win, and external Player.
    Thanks and Greetings Christoph
