SuperDrive starting to get weak at ejecting discs?

I have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J from a MBP that I bought around 2007 I think. I'm sure in computer years, it's getting on in its age. Anyway, I rent a LOT of DVDs and CDs from the library, so I don't know if it's a combination of these discs possibly being a bit thicker than normal (they used to have theft-deterrent strips on them, but no longer, so I don't know if there's other secret stuff on them now) but I'm noticing that the discs simply aren't ejecting easily. Usually have to catch them with my fingernails and grab the disc before it gets pulled back in, or in most cases, the disc barely ejects and I have to eject repeatedly until it somehow gets enough of a push to pop out.
Is the drive wearing out? I've been researching how to eject stuck discs for the inevitable day when the disc simply won't do anything, but if the actual ejector is weak, then how will force ejecting even work? While a CD in my computer would be quite the bother, I'm more concerned about it being a library disc that I'll have to pay beaucoup bucks for to replace.
Any advice?
Also, does "drutil eject" still work these days? Not sure if that's an old command or what.

"drutil eject" still works, but it sounds as if you're nearing a mechanical failure with the drive. You can have Apple replace the drive - very expensive - or you can purchase a new SuperDrive from Other World Computing and install it yourself. I wouldn't wait too long - you may end up with a stuck library disc and either have to disassemble the machine or take it to Apple to retrieve it.

DVD Superdrive keeps ejecting discs

My trusty old PB G4 has just started to eject discs from the dvd superdrive. I've tried various discs (mainly cd-r) but for some reason it squeaks and squawks then ejects the disc????
Could this be a media problem or perhaps.......a hardware problem?

I'm having this problem with my 2.5 Penryn Macbook Pro
And I had the same problem with my last mac which was a 2.8 24" silver iMac.
I took it to be repaired, they replaced the superdrive, and then I sold it on. But now the person i sold the iMac to is saying they are having the same problem.
It must be a fault with Apple's superdrives. My external firewire slot loading burner works perfectly.
Unfortunately I'll have to use that and wait until I buy my next mac before i can take this one in to be repaired. Hopefully they dont just replace the drive with another one of the same model.

Internal iMac superdrive keeps ejecting discs

The Superdrive on my iMac will not accept any discs. It just immediately ejects discs that I insert. This happened before about a year ago, but I forgot how I got it to work, and I can't find the thread here.
Thus this request: What do I need to do to get the Superdrive on my iMac to work again? I already cleaned it out completely with the air duster. I know that there is some keyboard startup trick or something that needs to be done to reset something, but my brain is aging, and I forgot what it is. Obviously any helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Superdrive ejects discs including cleaning discs

My superdrive has recently begun ejecting discs without opening them. On the chance that the lens needed cleaning I got a cleaning disc, but it gets ejected, too. Any thoughts? Bad drive?

As you have an iMac G5 the Optical Drive is a laptop spec drive and entire different to the drives used in iMac G4s which are full size 5.25" desktop drives. You should post in the iMac G5 forum.

Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.

My MacBook's SuperDrive spins then ejects disc

Hi,
My MacBook's SuperDrive is not working, it just spins makes a grinding noise then ejects disc.
Does anyone have any troubleshooting advice for this?
It's a late 2008 Aluminum Unibody Macbook.

OK so about 2 days ago out of nowhere my Superdrive would grind and eject every disc that I put into it when just the day before it was working fine but this happened earlier in the month. I was told to use a DVD/CD cleaner and that didnt work! So as a computer tech im used to taking things apart so I went under my Macbook Pro which was out of warranty and removed the Superdrive to inspect it. Everything was in tact and i even plugged it in to the motherboard and turned the computer on while the top metal cover was off and the disk ran and said ready to burn my DVD but as soon as i screwed that case back on the Disc would grind and eject again. NOW heres the reason and the fix!......When metal heats it gets soft and bends and the top metal cover that screws in over the superdrive is just a flimsy piece of metal and when it gets hot from the computer and the spinning of a DVD or CD it bends down a little onto the DVD (the grinding noise) till eventually it touches the DVD so much that the macbook just spits it out because it cant spin properly! So what you need to do it take the cover off.....bend it upward a little so that theres a little room between the DVD and the roof of the Superdrive because when the DVD goes in that little black thing that spins the DVD raises it up a little and also make sure that the little hooks that the screws screw into isnt bent downward either! if they are bend them upward a lil so that they are straight! After doing all this the Superdrive should be working as it should when you got your Mac, mines dont grind and dont make noises anymore and it actually reads my DVD's and burnes them faster!

Power on the computer and insert the DVD immediately.
Hold down the 'C' key to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD.

After selecting the appropriate language, if necessary, select Utilities, and Disk Utility.
You'll likely need to partition and format the new drive before it's recognized.

How far should SuperDrive eject discs?

How far does your SuperDrive eject discs?
The one on my MBP Core 2 Duo 17" 2.33 GHz ejects recordable discs only about 1-3/8 in, which makes it impossible to remove them without touching the top or bottom surface. My newer MBP Core 2 Duo 17" 3.06 GHz ejects them much farther (about halfway), so they can be handled by the edges instead.
The problem doesn't occur with commercially pressed installation discs, only with discs I use to record on (Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R, Verbatim 8X DVD-R and Taiyo-Yuden 8X CD-R).
This is the second replacement of the drive from AppleCare with the same problem. (At least I think they replaced it a second time. The service record said, "Doesn't eject media" instead of "Doesn't fully eject media," so maybe they tested it and thought it was fine.)
Is this normal behavior? Anyone else seeing this?

Unless you go back to the original owner, yes you need to pay for it again.
You're entitled to the OS that shipped with the device from Apple, but if you don't have that media there's nothing you can really do. If the system originally shipped with 10.7 or 10.8 then when you boot it to Internet Recovery, it will automatically offer you that OS version (as the serial # is registered with Apple). If it shipped with an older OS, then you need to enter the Apple ID that purchased 10.7 or 10.8. You didn't purchase it so that's not you.
The options you have are to buy Lion for $29 US (I don't know the price in Palestine), or Mountain Lion for $19 US (don't know the price in Palestine either), and install from scratch.
And it's a good idea to know you have restore media before you reformat your machine.

Accidentally trashed my Eject Disc icon--how do I get it back?

Somehow, I rolled the mouse near the Eject Disc icon in the dock, and before I knew it, it was in the trash and POOF gone. How can I restore it to the dock?

Thanks. For some reason, I actually had an eject disc icon in my dock sitting right next to the trash can. Don't know where it came from or how it got there, but it's gone now. I can still eject discs any number of ways, though, so I guess it's not a problem.

SuperDrive won't physically feed in a disc

I've got a mid-2007 iMac. The SuperDrive failed a while ago. It failed to read and eject discs. So I decided to replace the optical drive. The original drive was a Panasonic model UJ-875. I got a replacement drive Matshita model UJ-85JA on E-Bay.
The problem is, this drive fails to physically feed in the disc when I push it in.
It is at least recognized by the iMac with the following info shown in the About screen:

I also tried the "drutil eject" command, and interestingly, the eject function *does* work. I can hear the mechanism and it pushes out the disc. It just won't grab the disc and start reading it when I push it in.
I reset the PRAM and SMC but that had no effect. Anyone have any other ideas?

Try another disc drive. Apparently, that one's broken.

Mac won't eject disc

I have a disc full of photo's stuck in the disc drive on my imac. When I try to eject it, I get a spinning rainbow circle and have to do a hard shut down. It sounds like it is trying to eject it, but then gets hung up. Any advice?

Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

I am getting the message "the disc you inserted was not readable by this computer" when I plug in a verizon air card into my macbook air. It also does not show up as a device on my desktop. However, I select "ignore" and am still able to connect.

Whenever I insert my verizon air card into my MBA, I get the message "the disc you inserted was not readable by the computer", with the option to either ignore or eject. I select ignore, and am able to connect to the internet, but don't know why this happens. Also, the air card is not showing up as a peripheral on my desk top. Any ideas why this might be happening and how to fix it?

When I unplugged (power) and plugged in again to restart it, yes, I heard it spin and click. Not since then though. I assumed it went to sleep and since the computers don't recognize it they won't wake it.
If I need to replace it can the data on it be recovered?
