Superdrive suddenly disappeared, Don't think its Firmware

Hi,
I was just typing on my MacBook Pro today, and the superdrive made a whirring noise while there wasn't a disc in it. Just making sure, i stuck a Jack Johnson CD in it (its played in there before) and the drive sucked it in like normal, spun it a coupla times then stopped. it didnt come up in finder, itunes, disk util. and under system profiler it says that "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly."
I don't think its the firmware, because I was watching movies on it just a week ago, and i havent updated anything except to Microsoft Office 08. Theres still power in the drive, upon start up, i can hear the drive spin a few times. Any ideas?
Thanks

Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down apple/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys.

  • Bought a media streamer, don't think its mac compatible

    Hello,
not sure where to drop this post, but I'm gonna give it a shot over here
yesterday I bought a mediastreamer, nothing fancy, just something which I hoped did the trick.
    It's this one:
    http://www.grabngocollection.com/site/desktopdefault.aspx?tabindex=1&tabid=232&c id=30&gid=3020&pid=CM3H
ofcourse you could say, theres nothing on the box wich says it's mac compatible, ok you're right.
But the weird thing is, the macintoch finds the cm3H and shows the icon on the screen, but the map is read only. So I can't drop files there. While I plugged it on my old windows laptop it did work. So what I'm wondering is if there is a way where I could like, adjust the map myself so he can read and write? Please if anyone knows how, keep in mind, that I'm not a big computer wizzard
    Thanks in advance!

Damnit, looks like its not working for a full 100% .
The HD is now read and write, and yes I can drop files there, but when plugged into the television, it also shows the maps, but not the files.
Was too good to be true
    Thanks anyway!

  • My 16gb iPhone 4 suddenly thinks its 8gb, what happened?

My 16gb iPhone 4 suddenly thinks its 8gb. I've tried doing a restore but it says it can't as there isn't enough space.

Yes, Once the iPhone 4S was released, Apple re-released the 4 in 8gig. They've just done the same thing with the 4S.
If the problem is SMS, he should contact his carrier. If it's iMessage, does he have a data connection? I'd really need more information, though.
What is the problem, iMessage, SMS or both? Is there an active data connection? Has he contacted his carrier to confirm his account is still set up properly? What error messages is he getting? Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears?
    Best of luck.

    Hi guys.
I've had my MacBook Pro for 2 years now. Last night it suddenly kept glitching to a dark grey screen every now and then, then it would flash yellow / blue spots, and now it won't go past the grey screen even when I reboot it.
I don't think I can access my disk anymore as I've moved across countries since I've first gotten my laptop.  it was working perfectly fine before  it kept going to the dark grey screen with a little blue on the bottom.
If it helps, my camera light is still on, and it seems that my computer is working properly itself, but won't go past this grey screen.
I'm a college student and am really panicking about this - can anyone please tell me what to do?
Thank you & sorry for the long post.

What operating system are you running on it? (iOS 5.1 is for iPhone, iPad...not a Mac).

3 beeps usually means a Ram problem, have you added or removed Ram recently?
And I will assume that you do not have a Mac Pro, but that you have a portable, a MacBook Pro.

To double check it wasn't misplaced do a Spotlight search for a few tracks you know exist.  Spotlight will usually find them even if the files have obscure names.
If you really, really can't find any of this anywhere then it is possible it is all gone.  Normally an update or doing anything with iTunes should not do this, but once or twice a week out of millions of iTunes users we see somebody who has lost a library.  In that case you have to restore it from your computer's backup.  If you don't have one (why not?) you have to rebuild the library from the sources.  You can re-download most media you have purchased from Apple from the Store (not all though).

  • How to restore an album and its content? (suddenly disappeared)

I've just got my new macbook air and i imported a lot of photos to iPhoto
and it took me so much time to arrange it by my order (different albums places times and faces).
after a few days it suddenly won't open and it asks to choose an album or create one. i was trying to choose the old one but it won't open so i pressed "create new".
I managed to restore my old photos but i am so mad! its not in the order and not in its places, its messy and doesnt arranged by how i did it before.
no albums, no faces, NO EVENTS. Also every one of the photos is titled weirdly with numbers and letters which werent like this when i first imported them.
in the begining i liked how it was but now i am so angry and absolutely not pleased with how it all works on iphoto. if i wont find a solution i would have to delete everything and start from zero.
what can i do to restore my original album and all its events before it suddenly disappeared? if its even possible.
thank you so much for help and sorry for my english.

    These are your options:
    1. Restore the iPhoto library from the most recent backup that predates the issue.
    2. Repair or rebuild the library.
    3. Scavenge the library with a third-party application called "iPhoto Library Manager," which you can find in a web search. From the application's menu bar (not the iPhoto menu bar), select
    Library ▹ Rebuild
Books, calendars, and slideshows won't be preserved.

  • Contacts suddenly disappeared

I have a lot of contacts on my iPhone (from my Mac Address book, about 2 or 4 thousand). They've worked fine for the two months or so that I've had the iPhone. This weekend, just a few days after installing the newest version of iPhone software, I my Contact list suddenly disappeared. It happened while I was adding a phone number on my "recent calls" list to an existing contact.
Fortunately, even though I was traveling, I had my Powerbook so was able to resynch successfully. This occurrence really bothered me, as I don't always travel with my computer. Has anybody heard of this happening, and are there any solutions or precautions if you don't have your backup computer nearby? I tried resetting the iPhone but that didn't help. All other data on the iPhone was intact and didn't disappear, just the Contacts.

I don't have near that many contacts, only around 600. I noticed after the 1.1.3 update that changes made in the phone weren't syncing back to my Mac. I saw a suggestion to create a new group in Address book to see if it would jump start it. iTunes didn't see the new group, but when I synced, all my contacts became empty. Their names are still there, but there's nothing in them, and so the favorites show just numbers, no names (just like legal reported). I think it's a table of contents corruption thing, because obviously the numbers are still in there, and so are the names, they're just not associated together any more. Email addresses show up if I try to email someone, so those are in there somehow too.
I have deleted sync history as some have recommended, and I restored my phone, neither worked. I DID let it go to the backup, so I suppose the backup is corrupted as well. Only option left is to delete the backup and do a restore, but then I'll lose my notes since they don't sync.
    very bummed,

  • Notes Suddenly Disappeared!

All of Wordpress passwords, phones numbers, names, etc. etc. very important stuff suddenly disappeared from Notes on Mavericks. WT... Apple? Word processors don't do this. I guess I'll use Microsoft Word from now on.
Aside from Time Machine, is there any way to get this back? Why on earth would it disappear in the first place? Isn't it stand alone and have a database in my library?
Lousy! Shoddy! As Steve Jobs would say to you, 'That's crap.' GRRRRR
I updated Mavericks recently and I have an iPhone that is not set on Sync and has never given me trouble before. It backs up. But why should an upgrade EVER delete important personal information. That really takes the 'personal' out personal computer.

Thanks for the info. Fortunately, my data came back 'mysteriously.' I suppose the program's sync database (or whatever) is associated with my Yahoo account.
However, losing important information was quite an annoyance. I've decided to let Notes gather dust, and use simple text files as 'notes' in a folder titled 'Important Info' or whatever and keep an alias in my Finder sidebar. Obviously I'll be backing up the folder with dropbox, external discs, and email. Simple solution that will save me headaches in the future.
I understand the convenience of syncing for people on the go who rely use multiple devices, but that's not me. If it were, I think I'd find a dedicated format (like .txt) that I know is going to stick around and either email to myself, or again, use something like Dropbox or an encrypted web file transfer protocol. I don't flakiness either in my thoughts or in my data, which are after all correlated.
As more and more of the info we use is being wrestled out of our hands and into the hands control of corporations, I realize that I have been naive in assuming that applications will keep the structures they've always had.

Because of how integrated it is with windows IE should work. If it's not working, something more widespread could be wrong with your computer that would also prevent other browsers from working properly. Of course we'd love you to stick with Firefox, but you should get help with IE, too.

  • Will I still be able to send my iPhone 5S for repair even if I don't have its proof of purchase?

Yesterday, I got a problem with my iPhone 5S. When I updated it to iOS 8.1, it restarted along with the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). When it rebooted, it stuck in recovery mode, and when I want to restore it, it won't. It will display the status bar that it's restoring the firmware and when it reached halfway, it will turn blue screen then reboot and back again to the recovery mode. I contacted apple for this and they suggested to have my device for repair because it's a hardware problem.
So the real problem is, I've forgotten my receipt where did I put it. So now I don't have the proof of purchase for my iPhone. Can I present the original iPhone Box as a proof of purchase instead of the receipt? Please help me for this, I really need to fix my phone ASAP and I don't know if I would be able to send to apple knowing that I don't have its proof of purchase.
P.S. How long will it take for Apple to fix my device?
    Thank you!

Apple doesn't repair iPhones, other than some stores being able to replace the screen for a fee. They replace it with another of the same capacity, color, etc, as the one you have.
You should be able to get an Out of Warranty replacement for $269 USD. Bring it to an Apple store and they can tell you for sure.

  • Apple recall...I don't think so

I am an Mac geek. I love all (well, most) things Apple and have had, over the past 20 years, great respect for the company. And yes, I have some Apple stock.
But let me say, unless these class action lawsuites win, I don't think Apple is going to do an iPhone 4 recall. It will simply be too expensive both monetarily and to their brand image. Yes, that image is taking a beating, and rightly so. But a full recall. I doubt it (although I hope I'm wrong).
It is Apple's responsibility to test and release products that work and function. Not release it and have 1.7 million people beta test it for them. Almost every iPhone launch has been bigger the the previous. That means that Apple has to try harder to release products that work right out of the gate. That what happens when you become the second biggest company in the US.
I think Apple will fix the issue quietly and let the blogosphere discover it. They will let you return your iPhone for a fixed replacement under warranty. Maybe the new white iPhone will have the issue fixed. This way, if you have an iPhone 4 with no issues, don't return it. If you have issues, return it and get iPhone 4.1. This will cost Apple far less than a a full recall since it will not involve all iPhones 4's sold.

I disagree. Doig a full recall will show the world and loyalists that they are willing to accept and admit their mistakes, that they are sorry, and that they are working hard on a new design and will get it out shortly..sorry customer has to wait, but it will be worth it"
This kind of statement will go long ways to regain respect of loyalists and will show new customers that they are not arrogant and are willing to learn from their mistakes...
Its a good road for them to take.
If they stay in denial, then they will lose respect of people.

  • Don't think my computer is sleeping-

    Hi Guys
Bit of an odd situation. I have my computer quite near to my bed in a little room and so the numerous lights of my system (7 Power LEDs - G5, two monitors, USB hub, speakers and ext. HD and powerboard) illuminate my room to the point that i can't sleep with them ! So i taped most of them up with dark black electrical tape and turn off whatever i can.
My problem is that i don't think my computer is sleeping. Firstly i can hear HD wirr and possibly fans - there so quiet! and secondly i can *wake up* my computer by shaking the mouse - something you shouldn't be able to do. I've unplugged all peripherals including my non apple USB mouse. I've only unmounted and powered down my ext HD due to the position of the cables. The computer still only turns off the monitors and doesn't go to sleep fully. I haven't tried closing all open apps and i don't want that to be the solution as there is not point in my having to close all my programs in order to let my computer sleep.
The only thing i can think of right now is the fact that my computer is the dreaded Late 2004 / Oct 2004 Single Processor 1.8 Ghz G5 post G5 update. Do any other people with this same computer after applying the update have similar problems by any chance? Or is it just my computer? Can someone please think of something else that might be giving my poor little troublesome G5 insomnia ?
    Thanks for any replies
    DKR

Pretty obvious but did you check the sleep settings?
Have you tried to manually sleep your mac?
Sleep on a mac is a software/hardware dance where everything must be correct for it to work.
Usb devices (especially card readers) can mess it up. Do you have usb plugged into other devices (monitors, printers, etc.)?
    • Mac will not sleep if Applications/processes continuously writing to the Console logs.
Launch Console in Applications/Utilities and check both the console.log and system.log logs for blocks of recurring messages written therein that repeat at high frequency.
Note: the console.log file should open by default when you launch Console.

Has anyone tried creating a plugin that you can type in a specific word, and if it comes up in the very top of the page (i think its refered to as the header) it closes the page or tab automatically? there is a program called POW! by AnalogX that does this, but its only good for IE. And Im a Firefox man. Can anyone look into this or maybe create a plugin that does what POW! does for IE? I will donate to the creater of a plugin that does that. Im so sick of pop ups that most pop up blockers miss.

The Firefox pop-up blocker is very effective. If you are getting a lot of pop-ups in Firefox, you may have picked up some Malware that is causing those pop-ups.
Install, update, and run these programs in this order. '''''(Not all programs detect the same Malware.)''''' They are all free for personal use, but some have limited functionality in the "free mode" - but those are features you really don't need to find and remove the problem that you have.<br />
''Note: If your Malware infection is bad enough and you are mis-directed to URL's other than what is posted, you may have to use a different PC to download these programs and use a USB stick to transfer them to the afflicted PC.''
