Superdrive Update incompatible?

I just installed Snow Leopard today, and it seems to have all went quite smoothly, except my Superdrive Update 2.1 application is in the Incompatible Software folder. Is this normal? Don't you kind of need this app?

If you are talking about something you called the "Superdrive Update 2.1 application" be advised that:
1. This sort of file is not a normal application. You run firmware updaters once; they update the firmware in the Mac they are running on, & that's it -- the update to the firmware is permanent. If you try to run one of them again on the same Mac, it will just tell you that your firmware is up-to-date, it doesn't apply, & won't let you apply it again.
2. The only Superdrive firmware updates I can find with version 2 numbers are for PowerPC Macs, which Apple hasn't made for several years. Not only would such a thing not be needed for an Intel Mac like yours, an Intel Mac couldn't even run its code. This is probably why the updater was moved to the Incompatible Software folder. That's where it should be because it is old & incompatible!
3. Firmware updates only fix certain problems in the firmware of specific Mac models. There is no way to apply them to other models because the other models have different firmware. IOW, a Superdrive firmware update does not & can not apply to all Macs with Superdrives, just to the ones with the same firmware the update was written for. If you try to run the update on another model, you get the "not needed" message … *because it is not needed!*
In short, believe the messages you get & the behavior you see. They are correct & normal.

  • MBP does not start upafter superdrive update

    Hi,
I just upgraded the superdrive firmware (don't remember the release) and the macbook no longer boots up. The screen is completely dark and does not react although I removed the batery and power cord.
    Any idea?
    Thanks.

    Same problem with me!
I trashed the Superdrive Updater 2.1. application from the utilities folder (beforehand made a backup and created a disk image from a folder with the application). That solved the problem.
I am very fortunate that my drive still works. Now it makes only a very short engage and disengate sound at reboot and appears to be somewhat slower.
Apple should not post firmware upgrades that do not work or are very critical. Actually I did not want to install it, I just wanted to download the updater software, but after restart the **** thing just started all by itself.
Apple definitely should fix that problem and N E VE R program a autorun at startup routine for a firmware updater!!!

  • SuperDrive update?

I have updated the firmware 2.1 for the superdrive, I had a problem with the popup that comes up everytime I start the MBP(there's no drive to update). I seemed to have resolved that issue by deleting the update from my system preference/accounts/login items, and it doesnt come up anymore. My drive is still working! The firmware update is still in my utilities folder, were it should be, but my Questions are, A) can I delete the SuperDrive Update 2.1 safely by dragging it to the Trash, B) How can I tell if the Update took, is there a certain revision code or number that I can check, C) if it didnt take should I try the update again. Im asking these ? because I was told by someone at apple all you can really do to resolve the problem is do a Archive and Install, Ive never done this before and if I dont have to go through it, I would rather not, maybe alittle scared, I dont want to wreck my MBP or do something stupid.
Your expert advice would be greatly appreciated Thank you

I had the "no update available" problem on start up / login. My solution was to get rid of the updater (both the application and the updater.pkg which is located in library/receipts. This did the trick. And my DVD player works fine - I just copied a couple of DVDs and played the copied versions (old 16mm home movies that I had digitized).
I hadn't noticed the library receipts folder and I'm wondering if there is any functional advantage to keeping the receipts. There are 122 in my receipt folder and many of them weigh in at over a MB. Does anyone know if it is okay to just trash them? They all have the .pkg appended to the file name and they all appear to be updates. -JCB

  • SuperDrive Update 2.1

I updated software last night using the Software Updater, everything was fine before.
This is from the log file.
    2007-07-10 00:42:33 +0100: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)
    2007-07-10 00:43:09 +0100: Installed "iTunes" (7.3)
    2007-07-10 00:43:13 +0100: Installed "Security Update 2007-006 (Universal)" (1.0)
    2007-07-10 00:47:57 +0100: Installed "Mac OS X Update (Intel)" (10.4.10)
The other updates seemed to work fine but when my computer starts it launches the Superdrive Update and says "No Updateable devices found". I have tried it several times. I have repaired permissions which made no difference. I can burn CDs.... (I didn't try a DVD) but the drive seems to be there and working fine.
Everything on internet seems a bit slow.... might be unrelated but thought I'd mention it.
Is there something funny going on? Should I be worried?

Sorry..... just found answer in previous discussions! Don't know how I missed it!

  • SuperDrive Update 2.1 Error message at startup!

About a month ago there was a software update for superdrive, it was checked so i downloaded it. well ever since, when my computer starts up, the first program that opens up is "SuperDrive Update 2.1" and all it does is display a message "No updatable devices found". This happens every time i start up my macbook pro. Any ideas on how to fix/get rid of it?

If the icon for the updater is present in the Dock, control-click it and uncheck Open at Login from the menu which appears. Otherwise, remove it from the list of login items for your account in the Accounts pane of System Preferences.

  • Superdrive update giving me a weird message when I turn it on

Ever since my last update I keep getting an error when I turn on my MacBook saying there is no device that needs the Superdrive Update 2.1.
What is the deal? Can I remove this update so it doesn't pop up? Can I undo the update?

All you need to do is go to system preferences, then acounts, then login items, and uncheck and remove it there

  • Superdrive update on startup

Hi all. After installing the latest Superdrive update, 2.1 I think it was, everytime I startup my MBP the update comes up and tells me that it cannot find find compatible hardware or something, I guess because it's already installed.
The same happens on my frinds MB. Anyone else experienced it and knows how to stop it?

    Hi,
Check your login items (System Preferences, System, Accounts, Login items) and check if the update is in there.
If so, use the "-" to remove the update.

  • Speakers dead since SuperDrive update?

Since installing the "SuperDrive Update" yesterday (original MBP 15" 2.0 GHz CoreDuo 10.4.10) the speakers are dead. In System Preferences "Digital Out" is the only remaining option and when playing any audio a red light is emitted from the headphone terminal. When plugging in a headphone it does work, just there is no way to make the speakers work (they are not inoperative - the start-up sound plays back OK). There is no way to change this in either System Preferences or Audio/Midi Set-up. I have tried all the permissions, combo update, PRAM and SMC reset stuff already - no need to suggest that.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Uwe

  • Superdrive update issue

How do I stop the superdrive pop-up at every startup... it did its thing the first time and now I don't need it to pop up at start up anymore, how to I get this thing from popping up at start up every time?
I went to library/system/library/startupitems and I do not see anything for the superdrive startup item to delete... what is the specific thing I am looking for to delete?

I went to the location described below and deleted the updater from the utilities folder....
    About SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.1
The SuperDrive Update improves readability of certain CD media. The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder. Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the update process

  • SuperDrive Update - Or Did It ?

Unlike several posters here I still have a functioning CD/DVD drive which leads me to ask the question. "Did anything really happen?". The firmware level for my drive has reached HEB4, is that the right level? I'm loathed to re-run the SuperDrive Update app as I don't wish to screw anything up.
I must confess this upgrade process was the strangest one yet. The updater complained it wanted mains power, so I connected the mains power and was just about to hit OK when the Mac-Book went to sleep (soft blinking white light). I couldn't wake it. I powered it off/on after a while and this time got a nice pale blue start-up pane for a fraction of a second, then it went back to sleep again. About 1 minute later it booted all by itself able to read DVDs and CDs as before. So, in my mind I bungled the update ... but did I?

Sorry ingnore my posting, I've just updated a Macbook C2D and the Revision is KBVB so although I suspect the 4 in your apparent revision, this is obviously not as simple as I presumed.
I did note that the update will not take place without power, so perhaps your MBP didn't do anything until it saw external power. Sorry to be creating confusion.

  • Superdrive update error

The first time I started up my computer after installing the Superdrive update, the update ran successfully. However, everytime I have started it up since then, the Superdrive update tries to run, and displays a message saying that the update cannot find a drive to update. I only have to click quit to get rid of the message, and can use my computer normally, I just don't want the update to keep running everytime I start up my computer. What do I do?

I just posted about the same problem. What I did is that right when the msg comes up sayin "cannot find a drive to update", I did a "right click" on the icon that appears on the dock, and unchecked the "Open at login" option. This should prevent the updater to run endlessly.
    Best,
    JM

  • 10.5.0.142 update incompatible with windows 7

I unfortunately updated my desktop (windows 7 32 bit) and laptop (windows 7 64 bit) to itunes 10.5.0.142. Update seems incompatible with windows 7. It has slowed both computers to a crawl, even when itunes not running. Itunes functions do not work or process at a dead crawl. Cannot access the store. Cannot sync iphone. Tried reinstalling previous itunes version, but previous version can't access itunes library, giving error message: "cannot access itunes library that was created by newer version of itunes." Have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes multiple times. Have turned off all other processes to look for incompatibility, but issues remain. I am NOT PLEASED!.

I had the same problem and i downloaded microsoft fixit software and it did fix the issue. Here is the link for that guyshttp://support.microsoft.com/fixit/  When your on this page, dont change the first option n 2nd option be Connect to the internet or networks and for 3rd option choose  Automatically diagnose and fix common security setting on Windows. and run the software and enjoy itunes store.........

  • Superdrive update error box won't go away

I installed the current updates and now every time I turn on my MBP I get this box telling me that
    "NO UPDATABLE DEVICES WERE FOUND"
"No devices were found that require this update"
It is annoying and I don't see where to uninstall the update to make the box go away.
But most important, Why did it not recognize my Superdrive to update it?

    Had the same trouble...
Try System Preferences > Login Items
You should see the updater in the list.
Highlight it, and then remove using the - button.
The same applies to any other user accounts on your system I assume...

  • How to stop Firefox incessantly interrupting my work by trying to install an update incompatible with the Google toolbar which I depend on.that does nor

    Dear Sirs,
How can I stop Firefox from incessantly interrupting my work by trying to install an update that is incompatible with the Google toolbar which I depend on. Not knowing any better, I trustingly allowed the installation the first time the update notice appeared. It crippled my Internet routines. The toolbars did not work and the bookmarks as well as all the history entries were lost, I have had to reinstall my previous Firefox 4.0.1 and start all over again.

    Hi chib60,
Sorry you are having so much trouble.
Dealing with your last comment first ''"Copy and paste the information from Help > Troubleshooting Information." Why? How? This is ridiculous info - it has no logic or sense to it like most of your advice. ''
If you look to the right you will see a link for 'more system details' that is where such troubleshooting information appears, and it can sometime be helpful.
I am using firefox on a couple of old XPs without problems. Obviously crashing is not expected behaviour, but please try to think of firefox as two separate parts the basic browser and all the additional software as addons and plugins.
It may be rather unrewarding trying to track down the cause of a crash using crash information, the best way forward is probably to start using it in[[safe mode]] and with no plugins installed.
    * see also [[basic troubleshooting]]
If firefox is recommended by your university, why not try it out on one of their computers, presumably it is installed on the university computers available in the library etc, that should at least convince you that it does work.
I hope the problem is not malware, but if it is all the personal computers you try, a possibility that can not be discounted is that it is some form of malware affecting those computers.
Have you tried Internet Explorer, that will be installed on your XP by default I imagine, does that work ?
