SuperDrive Won't Read Discs at all

When i insert a disc into the built-in drive from pioneer, the disc spins, but after a while the drive just ejects the disc and wont read. How do i fix this?

More often than not Quality is the issue as well as the correct Format.
This issue has been discussed many times in the fourms.
Many users are not aware of the big difference in the quality in the Media for sale on the market today.
There is also a difference in the quality of the media in the same package from one disc to another.
So it seems this issue boils down to the best in over all quality of manufactured MEDIA.

I have tried several different brands and personally had my best luck with.
This Media will explain that it will burn in the OLDER as well as the NEWER Computers. It means that this media will burn at the best speed, your computer is capable of.

Again many computers are capable of reading and writing DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW as well as DL, Going under the aumption DVD is just DVD, which of course is not the case, have a look at the link below.

SO in closing, you will have your best luck using DVD-R Media and one that is high enough in quality that it will burn as stated above. 1X through16X

SuperDrive won't read OS X Tiger 10.4

I had OS X Tiger, but the system crashed, so I had to erase my hard drive and reinstall the only system I had on a disc, which was 10.2.8. Now I have a store bought disc of OS X Tiger, and the SuperDrive won't read it. It just spits it out after about 30 seconds, no error code or anything. Any thoughts?

May I assume that you can't boot from the DVD? Restart, hold down "C".....
Try a different user account. If recognized, it is a software related problem.
Also, try a boot in safe mode, and see if the install DVD can be recognized. If recognized, it is probably third party software/driver problems.

If none of the above work, join the ever growing list of G5 owners who have DVR problems. Most are resolved by replacement of the DVR.
An issue with Western Digital My Book has been recognized as responsible for burning problems.

Does your machine recognize other CD'S, or DVD's?
Do you still have burning function?
One last item- if you have access to another Mac, you might verify that the install DVD is good and recognizable on another machine.

Macbook pro won't read discs

macbook pro won't read discs. I have tried resetting the SMC & the computer itself. Any ideas

What exactly happens when you try?
Have you tried both DVDs and CDs?
Try a cleaning disk.
Otherwise it would seem that the optical drive failed.

SuperDrive won't read anything

Hi,
I have a Dual 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 and out of nowhere the SuperDrive suddenly won't read anything. I put in a CD or DVD and it'll make a short whirring sound about every 4-5 seconds and then after the third time it automatically ejects the disc. Is my drive dead? The computer is still covered under my AppleCare protection plan. Do I need to just bring it in and have it replaced?
Any information I can get here would be great so i don't have to call up Apple support and wait half an hour for someone to tell me there's nothing they can do, and I have to bring it in.

Hi. If AppleCare cannot fix the drive 'by phone'... they can send you a replacement drive to install yourself under the D-I-Y clause, para. 1.c.iv here

Superdrive won't accept discs, superdrive won't accept discs

last week i bought a usb superdrive for my new imac, and today after ejecting a disc it won't take a disc at all , makes no sounds nothing , plugged it into a diiferent computer and it ejected the disc i was trying to put in, but wouldn't let me insert one. i've checked that the computer is saying that there is a superdrive connected, but it comes up pale grey instead of black, and says no media present even though trying to insert disc.

A PRAM reset will not erase your HD. Because your machine is so new you should be callling AppleCare. You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. If you havne't already I'd STRONGLY recommend you buy AppleCare. This will extend the warrranty to 3 years and also give you 3years of phone support. SuperDrive is not reading discs

Hello, I have an IBook G4 and recently every time I put any disc into my SuperDrive, it won't read the disc and it will just eject it. I can't even enter the disc to do the hardware test. Any suggestions?

If you have access to a second Mac with a functioning optical drive you can try it in Firewire Target Disk Mode. Let me know if you have access and I will post step by step directions of how to go about it.

MacBook CD/DVD drive won't read disc

I have a Apple MacBook MC207LL. I have run into a major problem. My CD/DVD drive won't recogonize a disc when it's inserted (I have to force eject it). Disk utility shows that there is a disc present in the CD/DVD drive.
My major issue is that I erased my partition so I can have a clean install of my laptop. Now I can't reinstall the OS because it won't read the disc or a USB.
Is there a way to use Terminal to force it to read my data on the disc?
Otherwise I am stuck with an empty computer that I will never be able to use I have done research on this and nobody has run into this exact problem as me. If someone can take their time to help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem, but now mine wont even notice that the disc is there! I wouldsay take it to the genius bar.

Won't read discs automatically

My mac doesn't take discs automatically. It won't swallow discs or read unless I open 'utilities' or 'realplayer'..
Any ideas about this problem?

I had something similar a few days ago and thought the Blu ray drive had gone kaput

Superdrive won't read certain discs in 10.5.8. WIN /MAC problem?

Have an early 2008 Mac Pro. Superdrive worked fine on 10.5.7 but since upgrade to 10.5.8 it will only read certain discs. Have a WIN/MAC rom of game Spore and the drive takes it in, sits for 2 minutes and spits it out. Could it be that the disc is WIN / MAC combo? Tried it on new apple MacBook Pro running 10.5.7 and drive read it fine. Does Mac need to issue a firmware update for Mac Pros? Know it recently upgraded Macminis and MacBook firmwares. Could it be software issue or corrupt preferences? Tried Ram zap and permissions repair and no go. Hope Apple is on this cause I heard others with similar issues.

I can tell you this - I have two Superdrives in my Mac Pro, both Pioneer, and experienced the problem you are reporting with previous OS X updates. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and after renting a bunch of DVDs, many of whom would generally not work in the past and I'd be forced to use a Lacie USB Slim Drive, all suddenly worked instantly, on the first try.
So it may be a software thing with 10.5.8. Carbon Copy your current system over to an external USB drive then upgrade to Snow Leopard and see if that doesn't make a difference. If it doesn't, and you don't want SL, copy back your previous 10.5.8 system. Can't hurt anything doing that. And if SL fixes the problem you can always update the external USB drive.

Superdrive noisy, won't read discs

When I insert a CD or DVD, my Superdrive makes a noisy attempt at reading it, then fails and eventually ejects it. Is this definitely a replacement issue, or is it repairable?

IBook G4 Superdrive won't read any discs

Few days ago my iBook's Superdrive worked perfectly and I never had any issues. I would barely use my drive and I never used any dirty or scratched discs in order to avoid issues, anyway, today I found some burned music discs in my room and I was curious to know what songs they had, but then when I inserted the disc it just kept loading and loading until it ejected by itself, I then checked again if it was scratched and it wasn't, I tried another disc and no luck, I restarted the computer and the usual noise that the drive makes when the computer starts changed and sounds kind of rough like its forced, it did't sound like that before I inserted the CD. What could the problem be? Why would the superdrive die if I rarely used it? Also, the system profile detects the drive but the disk utility won't show the drive. Any ideas? I really don't want to change the drive.

If your SuperDrive will not mount the install disk or commercially recorded CDs it would seem the drive is not functioning well and may be on the way out. With the older tray-loading drives it was easy to access the inside of the drive and clean the laser with a alcohol towelette. With the internal drives that is more of a challenge and you not only have to remove the drive but to open it up, and even after that the issue may not necessarily be the laser.
Possible options are: a replacement SuperDrive, an external firewire drive or using Firewire Target Disk Mode with the assistance of a second firewire capable Mac.

Toast crashed while burning, now Superdrive won't read or burn disc

my superdrive just died... today i was burning dvds... and it was stuck while verfifying, so I force quit... now it can't read any disc...
is there a way to reset the drive so the head can read again?

You can try resetting the SMU and the PRAM but you should also consider the possibility that the drive no longer works.

Superdrive won't read DVDs since I installed Lion

Long story short - My hard drive died a few weeks ago. Everything was backed up on a Time Capsule. After installing a new hard drive, I went through and install each OSX I have had before transferring over my data and applications. I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2009 (came with Leopard). So, I went through, updated to Snow Leopard then Lion, then transferred over my data.
1. I bought a game recently. All the specs fit for my computer. Put it in my SuperDrive and it would neither mount nor be recognized by the computer. My computer said it was a blank disc and spit it out after spinning it around for 5 minutes. I tested the game disc on another computer (my brother's Windows one) and it worked fine.
2. After transferring my data over, my Adobe CS3 was having problems opening. I recieved a few messages about problems with the licenses and figured I would have to uninstall everything and reinstall everything. (Tried the license repair tool from Adobe too, couldn't get it to work). So I uninstalled everything I had from Adobe (using Adobe's uninstaller). I inserted the disc to be reinstalled and had the same problems. The disc kept spinning, wouldnt mount, and my computer said the disc was blank.
I have tested burned discs and film DVDs. All of them seem to work. I am just having issues with installation DVDs it seems. I have also tried mounting them in Toast Titanium and I can't get that to work either.
I took my computer to the Apple store, they said they could replace the drive or do testing on it for 5 days. I can't really afford to be with my computer for that extended amount of time right now nor do I want to drop $100 when this could be a software or firmware issue. My questions are:
1. Will upgrading to Mountain Lion fix or make this issue worse?
2. Are there any diagnostic tools I can run besides the AHT to find out if my drive is going to ****?
3. Are there any software related things I can do to get my discs installed? (IE Installation over a network, using ISOs ->which I tried with the game, couldnt get that to work).

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Superdrive won't read original CD's

I just purchased a MacBook 2.0/1GB ram three days ago. Everything has been working relatively smoothly until today, when I inserted an original audio CD for the first time. It launched in iTunes but when I tried to import tracks to my library, iTunes crashed. I restarted iTunes, but it froze when I tried to import a track again, so I force quit, and then restarted my computer.
Since then, not a single original CD will load. They all get spit back out. I've tested most other kinds of discs (DVD movies, DVD-R's, CD-R's (both data and music)), and everything seems to work EXCEPT original CD's. Doesn't matter if they're audio or data, they get spit back out.
I will call AppleCare tomorrow, but in the meantime, I was curious if anyone else has had this problem, and whether people think it's a hardware or software issue.

Mine is a Matsushita as well (Well, Matshita in System Profiler, but same deal).
I went back to the Apple Store today, and talked with one of the guys at the Genius Bar for about 40 minutes. I told him about the problem, and put in one of the CD's that has been giving me problems. Sure enough, it stopped importing and made iTunes unresponsive. he tried the CD on one of the other computers in the store, and it worked just fine. Then, we tried another CD, that I knew my drive would just spit out without mounting it...sure enough, it spat it out. Again he tried it on one of the other computers behind the bar, and it mounted just fine. Odd thing was...he said that the superdrive was the same in both models.
He also noticed that my hard drive was spinning when there was nothing trying to access it, although i think that may have been a byproduct of force quitting iTunes and getting a CD out.
In any case...I'm faced with the prospect of sending my computer in to get it looked at, which he said takes 6 business days...and that's a bit hard for me to stomach because it's my only computer now. But I guess it may need to be done. It's just a little annoying because they've already replaced the SuperDrive once.
