Superdrives in new Macbook C2D

I am about to invest in a new macbook but am worried about the nember of people who have expressed having difficulties with playing dvd's and ripping cd's. I have a huge nuber of old cd's that i would want to put onto itunes, and as a recent graduate, some of my dvd's are not in the best condition!!
I therefore have 2 questions....
1.Is the issue of media readability an inherent one with the drives that apple put in the macbook or could i get lucky with the one I get?
2.Can anyone please post about how they feel the superdrive performs with scratched cd's and dvd's in the new macbook C2D? Positive comments would be appreciated!
Many thanks in advance.

i recomend buying one of these if your cds are damaged... http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=electronics-uk&field -keywords=cd%20repair&results-process=default&dispatch=search/ref=pdsl_aw_tops-2_electronics-uk_85861342&results-process=default?tag2=gb-en-google-21
im confident the superdrive will be fine tho so i have invested and am eagerly awaiting its arrival!

  • The new MacBook C2D

    Hi everyone!!!
My question is to all already have the new MacBook C2D. Do you have any problems whit it? Heating? Software? Any problem? They don´t arrived yet at Portugal and i want to know if they are coming good!?
Thanks to all and sorry my bad english! =)

Well, I'm sitting here in my living room wirelessly connected, reading posts, listening to music, etc etc and I'm loving it. When watching HD video, the fans get louder but it's not unbearable like a desktop PC by any means. So far, I haven't found anything this MacBook can't do that my full-powered (and bulky) desktop system can do. The Core2Duo is plenty fast, the display is crisp, the wireless runs without a hitch, and even the trackpad works how it's supposed to. Laptops have come a long way.

  • New Macbook c2d en route -- how do i get files of its ancient predecessors?

i ordered my c2d macbook from macmall. the rebates do look like a PITA, but they're substantial -- not only $100 on the computer, but $70 on Parallels which I ordered at the same time. i've bought from them in the past without troubles, and hope to have the same experience; if not, i still haven't paid a premium so worth the gamble. UPS says it's made it from memphis to knoxville so far, so half way home.
my question though is how i'm going to get my files from my inspiron to my new macbook, and from an old performa i have to my macbook. the performa runs os9, so i understand that i can't use the migrate capabilities of osX. it doesn't have USB, much less firewire, so that route is out. so... if everything is connected through a router, hopefully my macbook will see the performa and i can just copy over? will it see the dell? i don't have a burner on either old computer, so can't do it that way. any tips?
also, can i run OS9 on the macbook, so i can use some of the old software i have? i haven't seen anything on that. sure would add to my capabilities while i wait for versions of the sw that are made for the intel chip....
    thanks in advance.

If the Performa has ethernet, then you can create a Net between your new MacBook and the Performa (using an ethernet cable, I don't think you'll need a crossover cable).
You may be able to run OS 9 in your macbook via one emulation software, like Basilisk (emulates a 68K mac) or SheepShaver (emulates a PPC mac). You will also need your original OS9 disks and to extract your Performa's ROM.
I stepped from a PowerBook 190cs to a MacBook and I've been able to run OS 7.5.5 via Basilisk and use some of my old software. I had some problems moving files from the older system to the new, because of the way OSX treats resources, so to move some old applications I recommend that you compress then (.zip or .sit).

  • Randomly slow Airport connection on MacBook C2D

    Hi.
Seems I am lucky because my brand new MacBook C2D can connect to WiFi access points!
I have a "surprising issue" though : after a few minutes of connection, the connection gets very very slow.
If I turn Airport off then back on, it all goes back to normal .... for a few minutes
My MacBook is uptodate, with AirPortExtremeUpdate2007001 installed.
I spent over an hour with Applecare Today, but the issue is still there.
We zapped the P-Ram, moved the "SystemConfiguration" folder to the desktop, restarted the router several times with no lasting effect.
The access point is a Netgear DG 834 GT, configured with WPA security and an access list, on an occupied WiFi channel. 3 other Macs (2 MacBook Core Duo, 1 MacBook Pro 17 Core Duo) and one Sony Vaio connect to it without any problem.
The MacBook C2D can connect to my home network (powered by a 802.11g Airport Extreme) at full speed without any issue either.
Should I buy an Ethernet cable, wait for the next Airport update ?
Does anyone experience the same kind of issue ?
    Thanks un advance.

I have the exact same problem you are describing. Randomly, I experience EXTREMELY slow connections. Sometimes the connection is so slow it seems I am not connected. I have had this problem since I bought my MacBook C2D in the fall. This problem has occurred at many different access points, including my netgear router, coffee shops, and several different universities.
My husband owns a MacBook Pro, and sometimes we will be side by side on our computers, which supposedly have the same software (I am running 10.4.8 and currently have all the updates as does he), same processor, and he never has trouble with his wireless connection. So it is definitely my computer, not the routers.
I have called Apple support twice to descirbe the problem. They suggested I send the computer in to get the airport card replaced. At this moment my wireless is working. However, this is the first time since yesterday morning that it has worked. I don't think apple will replace the card unless the problem can be reproduced. And the problem seems to be entirely random.
I would be very happy if someone figures out what is wrong.
    Thanks.

  • New MacBook Air SuperDrive for G4 PowerBook

My G4 PowerBook is still going strong except the original SuperDrive died a few months ago. While watching the MacWorld 2008 Keynote, I see that there is now an External MacBook Air SuperDrive option available for the new MacBook Air for $99. Does anyone know if this external Superdrive will work with the G4 PowerBooks?
    Thanks.

Hi, DLaid, and welcome to Apple Discussions. You could replace your internal Superdrive yourself for $50-S75 USD (depending on what drive you chose) and an hour of your time. See the link in my post above. Buying an external optical drive to use with a portable computer would be silly, but if you wanted to do it anyway, there are dozens to choose from besides Apple's. As I explained above, a USB-only drive is totally inappropriate for use with a Tibook, even if it would work. Get a FireWire-capable drive if you buy an external.
Be aware also that when you post in these forums, you aren't talking to Apple; you're just talking to other Mac users like yourself. The people at Apple who need to hear your concerns don't monitor these boards. This is explained in the "Help & Terms of Use" link that appears in the right sidebar of every Discussions page. Your second-paragraph gripes would be more usefully addressed directly to Apple through the appropriate Product Feedback channels:

  • My superdrive makes a loud noise when i start up my new macbook pro 15" that i just got about a month ago, is there any way how to fix it or should i take it in to an apple store

Just got a brand new macbook pro, and eve since I first started it up it has made this weird noise right before the start up audio. i have done some research and i have found out that there are two superdrives that apple puts into their macbooks and that one is louder then the other, but this was back in 2009. should apple have fixed that through out all these years. what should i do?

Yes, it makes this noise, but only on startup.  It is normal to hear this noise during startup.  My mac is an early 2011 model.

  • Update to Mac OS X 10.5 - just bought my new MacBook Pro C2D - update free?

    dear forum,
is there a cheap update path to 10.5 ? got
my new macbook pro C2D some hours and
thought about getting 10.5 update free of
charge. in the early years there where coupons
when you got a new mac.
    thank you for some statements
    torres

Apple has not historically offered a cheap upgrade path for new operating systems unless you bought a new Mac in the time period between them announcing a release date for the new system and the date of that announcement. In the past, times have varied between one and two weeks.
In your case I would not count on it. I would plan on paying the full price, which has not been announced yet either.

  • Hi guys, I recently got a new MacBook Pro with a USB Superdrive. A disc won't eject, does anyone know of a way to eject it? I'm in Morocco for the next 10 days so going to an Apple store is not possible. Any help would be gratefully received, thanks

Hi guys, I recently got a new MacBook Pro with a USB Superdrive. A disc won't eject, does anyone know of a way to eject it? I'm in Morocco for the next 10 days so going to an Apple store is not possible. Any help would be gratefully received, thanks

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

It will void your warranty if Apple finds out that you have made this modification. But if you ever have a need to use the Apple warranty you should put the optical drive back in before taking it to an Apple store for the warranty work.

  • HT4007 How can I get Aperture onto my new Macbook Pro 15" Retina that DOESN'T have a superdrive from my 5 year old Macbook Pro?  I still have the CD and serial number for Aperture. HELP! PLEASE!!

Like the thread topic says. I need help getting Aperture onto my new macbook pro that does not have a drive. I have no need for a drive after this to be honest just need my programs back on it. Thanks.

    Two options:
Make a disk image or a clone of the installer CD on your Mac that has a super drive - you can create a disk image using Disk Utility or use Carbon Copy Cloner (if you have it) to clone the DVD to a thumbsdrive. Then run the installer on your MBY from this copy.
Or download the Trial Installer and install from there:
    Download the Aperture 3.1 Trial.  http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/Aperture/061-8328 .20101020.AprE3/ApertureTrial3.1.dmg
Open the Aperture Trial disc image.
    Double-click the "Aperture Trial.mpkg" file.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install Aperture.
After the installation completes, choose Software Update from the Apple () menu.
Install the Aperture 3.4 update from the list of available updates.

  • New MacBook Pro, Won't mount ANY media in superdrive

I just bought a new MacBook Pro on Wednesday (6.20). I have spent a whole day transferring my info over, and today put in a CD to rip and found that the CD wouldn't mount.
I tired blank media, DVD's, CD's, everything and nothing will mount. It will be sucked in the drive, think for about 6 seconds and spit it out. Restarts haven't worked, I tried to run the Hardware Test, but I can't keep the disc in, so no hardware test. I once put the disc in and shut down quickly, then restarted holding down "d", yet it just spit the OS X dvd right back out when it started up.
I can't take this back to the Apple store till monday. Are there any ways to look at this, or will I just be sending my brand new computer to Apple Care 5 days after I bought it?
    MacBook Pro 2.4gHz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Yes, Please Let me know how it goes. I just left for business with the new MBP and realized the problem so I can't make it to AS till monday. I did call though and of course they said it would go to the Genius Bar.
I asked for the manager and let him know the problem, and kindly told him that I was going to leave the AS on monday with a working MBP. He said, if the drive was dead, he would just swap it out for a new one.
I am not sure how I am going to switch my apple care (since I already registered it)
Hope this helps, and I hope you get you problem solved without loosing the machine to apple care 4 days after the purchase.
