Superduper backup to disk image then restore from disk image

Im trying to get bootcamp to work but it told me to backup, format and restore. Im currently copying my data to a disk image. Am i able to restore this or is it pointless?
Thanks

You can do it your way, but the intended way is to use FileVault to encrypt your Home folder. When you log out of your account then TM will begin the backup of the encrypted Home folder. No need for you to encrypt or decrypt your own disc image.
If you allow TM to run hourly backups as you now do, then both your Home folder and your backups are not secure.

  • Failed to backup my new iPhone, then restored from iPod, lost pics on new iPhone!

    I have been using an iPod for two years, and been good about backing it up.  I finally bought an iPhone, and backed up my iPod one final time.  I then didn't find the time to restore to the new iPhone, and used it for two whole weeks.  I finally remembered, and restored from my old to my new iPod.   Unfortunately I forgot I had taken 100 pics on my new iPhone, and I lost them all.  Are they recoverable?  My son's first homecoming and first crew regatta pictures (of course). Heartbroken.  I sent a few pics to my son, but I lost the rest.  Thanks for helping is you can.  Yes, I learned my lesson!

    That is a shame. See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for a way to backup your iTunes library and other personal data folders.

    My own opinion is that you should install the later appropriate version of Silverkeeper. That said, I would in fact recommend if you can wait a few days for an answer, that you email the La Cie Silverkeeper backup team via the email link on the site at http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/
    They are careful to say they are not officially providing a backup service, but when I emailed them with a query regarding usage about a year ago after downloading Silverkeeper for myself, I got a reply within a couple of days that cleared up my question.

    I live in Canada.  Each time I travel to the US, I lose all calendar entries.  I have to erase all data, then restore from an iCloud backup.  Tedious.  iPhone 4, iOS 7.1, sync set to all events.  I only use the default calendar.  Do I have an incorrect setting?

    I did find another point worth mentioning.
    I use my iPhone 4 with a corporate Exchange email account.  I had deleted the account from my phone just before I did this backup/restore process...and I thought my battery drain was much, much better (if not outright fixed).
    Later in the day, after seeing my battery life improve to near-new behavior, I re-added my Exchange mail account.  Considering I have 1 yahoo account and 3 gmail accounts, the Exchange account adds a 5th email account.
    What happened?  Battery drain back to "worst case".  Removing or re-adding the Exchange account is like toggling between decent and terrible drain conditions.
    Bottom line is that I re-added a couple dozen applications and battery life didn't change.  By far, the Exchange account drains the battery worse than any other app and setting.  This account must be polling very frequently and since people tend to send very large file attachments to that account, perhaps those effect the battery drain even though I have the account set to not download attachments.
    Anyone running Microsoft Exchange might be able to confirm what I see?  If so I can open an enterprise ticket with Microsoft and bug them on this issue.

    After restoring my iphone 4 to factory settings, then restoring from a recent backup, my phone will reboot but keeps coming back to the "new setup or restore from backup screen". How can I by-pass this screen to go directly to the sync apps/music screen?

    Well, it's certainly behaving as though the phone that was backed up was synced to a different iTunes library.
    I'm going to throw one more thing out there... Yes, you backed it up to this computer... Was the phone previously set up to sync with this computer? Or was it syncing with a different computer and you just backed it up to this one?
    You may have to end up setting it up as a new device and rebuilding the phone by manually re-syncing your data, apps, music, etc. to the phone.
    Trying to keep your library on a different drive can be tricky. If iTunes starts up and the library isn't available, it may end up generating a new library ID, meaning that you could easily find yourself in exactly the position you're in now...
    I'm curious why there was a need to restore your phone to begin with... It may not have any bearing on this at all, but it could.

  • Created image of volume not drive, is there a way to restore from that image?

    Hello so my hdd failed and I made a image of the volume accidentally rather than the drive, now when I try to restore from the image it says that you need to scan image for restore, but everytime I try to do it, it fails. Do you know a way to bypass that and just restore from the volume image? It is possible that i might be able to put back in my old drive and try to image the drive, but i really dont want to have to do it. please let me know

    You probably need a partition map and a Recovery HD on the drive, then restore the Volume.

    Adobe applications should be installed, not transferred.  If yoiu have the disks then yes, use them.  IF you do not you can download from:

    Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar

    How did you restore from your old hard drive?
    Technically all that was needed was to use Migration Assistant on the fresh OS X install to migrate users accounts and programs to the new machine.
    You can use a SATA to USB adapter to connect the old drive if you want to go that way and start over with a fresh install again on the new drive.

    How do I change the image used on an movie project icon?
    iMovie seems to select an image at random from the images I imported.

    Not sure I understand how to use what you have posted. Here's what my init() looks like:
    public void init()
    setLayout(new BorderLayout());
    p=new Panel();
    p.setLayout(new GridLayout(1,1));
    callnowButtonURL = getURL(callnowButtonFilename);
    if (callnowButtonURL != null)
    callIcon = new ImageIcon(callnowButtonURL,"call");
    endcallButtonURL = getURL(endcallButtonFilename);
    if (endcallButtonURL != null)
    endIcon = new ImageIcon(endcallButtonURL);
    b=new JButton(callIcon);
    b.setBorder(new EmptyBorder(0,0,0,0));
    b.setBorderPainted(false);
    b.addActionListener(this);
    p.add(b);
    add(p,"Center");
    Now the ActionListener is basically:
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
    if (mybool == false)
    <Perform actions here set mybool to true>
    Change JButton b to use EndIcon
    else
    <Perform actions here set mybool to false>
    Change JButton b to use CallIcon
    Can you clarify how to perform the action I require? You can have a couple of Dukes if you can help me sort this out.

  • Disk Utility Restore from Sparse Image taking forever

    I created a sparse image backup of my MBP C2D using SuperDuper! before sending the laptop back to Apple for repair. I wiped the drive clean before shipping. I now have the laptop back and am trying to restore the sparse image to the HD.
    The sparse image file is on an HD in my G5 tower and is just over 108 GB. I booted the G5 into target disk mode and connected it to my MBP via FW800. I then booted off the Leopard install disk and launched Disk Utility to do the restore.
    The sparse image mounts fine in Disk Utility and is specified as my source for the restore.
    I started this restore last night before I checked out for the night and when I got up this morning, Disk Utility showed about 35-40% of the image had been restored and 14 HOURS were remaining. That seems a little excessive after it had already been running for well over 9 - 10 hours.
    The sparse image mounts on the MBP just fine using target disk mode from my G5 -- so as far as can tell, my backup image itself is ok.
    My question is this: is the Restore function performance of Disk Utility with sparse images really this bad or is something wrong with what I am doing? I really don't want to rebuild my laptop from scratch, but if I have to wait 34 or more hours for Disk Utility to finish a restore -- it might be quicker to rebuild it.
    Any ideas out there?

    no the restore function is not this bad.
    something must be wrong with your sparse image. you should have tested it before sending the computer for repairs. and why did you use a sparse image at all?! you should have made (and tested) a standard clone.

  • Dock gets corrupted on Iintel machines/10.4 after restoring from disk image

    Hi all,
    I run a script at home that creates an image of my boot disk every night (it reboots into another volume, runs SuperDuper! and boots back into boot volume. I also use master disk images to deploy Macs at work. Every time an image is restored the dock becomes a mess, it looks something like this:
    http://a-world.net/files/dockmess1.jpg
    ...random icons pointing to random files, example, this is what used to be a Firefox icon, not:
    http://a-world.net/files/dockmess2.jpg
    This only happens on Intel Macs and started to happen recently after one the system updates. It wasn't happening under 10.4.6 I think but it started some time after.
    What's even weirder is that restoring com.apple.dock.plist from backup (Retrospect) doesn't seem to help, the prefs get corrupted anyway. Is there any other prefs file responsible for maintaining links betwen items in the Dock and originals? By the way desktop shortcuts do not get messed up, only the dock.
    Any ideas? This is very annoying. Thanks.

    This behavior is happening to quite a few of our computers. What they all have in common is that they are Intel Macs that have been upgraded to 10.4.10. I have verified on our test boxes that the problem does not occur with 10.4.9, then appears in 10.4.10. Don't know why.

  • Restore from disk image on external hard drive

    I have a early 2011 macbook pro and the internal hard drive failed. I installed OS X mavericks on an external hard drive (1) and I boot from the external drive (1). On a different external hard drive (2), I have a disk image of my macintosh HD (the computer's original hard drive with all my data on it) How do I go about restoring from the disk image on the external drive(2) to external hard drive (1)?
    I want to be able to boot from the external hard drive (1) and have all my data that I backed up as a disk image on external hard drive (2)

    I put the disk image in the source field and "backup" , the external drive I want it on, in the destination field
    When I try to use disk utility it says it must scan the disk image first, then says "Unable to scan "Backup" (resource busy)"
    "Backup" is the name of the external HD  I am booting off of, which makes sense that it says resource busy. So how is this done?

  • Iphone 4s fails to restart after installing ios 5.1 & then restoring from backup ?

                                            I have restored My Iphone 4s to Os 5.1 Yesterday ... every thing went fine ..... at the time of restoring it from my previous backup ........ iphone fails to restart ..... it is in continous loop of apple logo and busy icon thereafter .. can anybody help ????

    In that case, if everything else has failed, you can restore your iPhone by putting it in to DFU mode.
    Follow the steps precisely.
    1) Connect your phone to computer. Open iTunes (if it doesn't open automatically).
    2) Turn your phone off. Turn off the device by holding down the sleep/power button in the top right corner and Home button at the same time. A red slider will appear. Slide it to the right to turn off the device. Alternatively, keep holding both buttons even after the slider appears and the device will turn off. Let go of the buttons when the device powers down.
    3) Put iPhone into DFU mode. Hold down both the top (sleep/wake) and home buttons for exactly 10 seconds, then release the top (sleep/wake) button but keep holding the home button until iTunes displays a message stating that a phone in recovery mode has been discovered. Let go of the Home button.
    4) Device screen is Black. If your device's screen is black, you are in DFU Mode. It may appear that the device is turned off, but it's not. If your phone displays anything, you are not in DFU mode.
    5) Restore. Press the restore button and allow the phone to complete the restoration data. After it is done, select setup as a new phone. (Preferable)
    Restore your backup (optional). Next, you can restore the phone again in the normal fashion (not DFU mode) using the most recent backup rather than setting up as a new phone. However, this may cause the original problem to return in some cases. If the problem returns, follow steps 1-5 again and setup as new. Do not restore from your backup afterwards.

  • Ipod reset to old setting with old icloud ID.  How do I reset it to use new login for icloud and then restore from icloud backup

    My upgrade to iOS 8 failed and I had to restore my iPad from an old backup (since restoring from cloud wasn't given as an option).
    Now the iPad has my old iCloud account configured instead of the one I've been using for the past year or so.  How do I:
    1. Get the iPad to use the correct iCloud account?
    2. Restore the iPad from an iCloud backup?
    Everytime I try to log out of iCloud it prompts me for the password on the old account to allow me to turn off "Find my iPad".  I don't think that account even exists anymore.  I tried to reset the password on the old account (using an old email address), but the password email never arrives.
    Help!

    Make sure you are signed into iMessage and FaceTime with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
    Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).
    If you need to restore an iCloud backup, it's explained here: iCloud: Restore your iOS device from iCloud.

  • I want to reset my iPhone then restore from a backup...

    Hello again Apple community.
    I have an iPhone 5 and I want to reset it then restore it from a backup. I go to Settings -> General -> Erase all Content and Settings. I then enter my passcode, press Erase iPhone, and then press Erase iPhone on the confirmation screen. However, when I do that it tells me to enter my Apple ID password to erase the iPhone "and remove it from your account." The thing is, I'm not sure I want to do this because if I do, I'm afraid that it'll delete all of the purchases (apps, music, etc.) from my account and I will have to buy EVERYTHING again. Does anyone know if it'll delete all of my purchases or, better yet, does anyone know how to bypass this? I never remember this happening when I had iOS 6. I do have it backed up to my MacBook Pro.
