SuperDuper! CarbonCopyCloner or Mac 10.4.11 Disk Utility?

Is one far superior to the others, and if so, why?
Thanks all.

SuperDuper & Carbon Copy Cloner are better than Disk Utility. CCC is freeware. SuperDuper costs a few $, however, the basic clone feature is free. The additional features cost.

  • Ipod shuffle 3 : impossible to detect it on mac (finder, itunes and disk utility)

    Hi,
ipod shuffle 3 : impossible to detect it on mac (finder, itunes and disk utility), but it works, I can listen music. Do you have a solution for me ?
the same on windows... no détection on plug
    thanks
    Fred

Does it still charge when connected?  You said it still works with headphones.
It's possible that the connection port (the headphone jack) on the shuffle has become faulty.  It has different connection points, so it's possible for it to work for headphones (and charging), but not for data.  It's also possible that the USB cable is bad, if you have only one and no alternate way to test it and confirm it's working.
However, you can try these other things.  Shut down the Mac and disconnect all USB peripheral devices, including any hub.  Use this procedure to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
Start up Mac with nothing connected, except for standard keyboard and mouse (for a Desktop Mac).  Connect the shuffle to a direct USB port.  Check with iTunes, Finder, and Disk Utility to see if there is any improvement.
If that works better, experiment with connecting other USB device, to see if there was some type of USB conflict, or maybe overloading of USB bus (for power).

  • My mac keeps freezing, the disk utility states the hardrive is failing

Hi. My desktop was upgraded to the snow leopard and has had increasing problems with freezing. Now it wont start up at all, so I have to open it with the Disk 1 OS.. then I went to the disk utility to try and repair it.  But it says the hard drive is failing. When I did the hard drive test, it passed without any issues.  I am confused and cannot restart my computer.

If by the "hard drive test" you mean the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) that you run by starting up the Mac into it, it is possible (but not very likely) that reformatting the HD using Disk Utility while booted from the installer DVD & then reinstalling the OS from the same source will set things right.
To do the reformat, select the entire HD & use the "Partition" tab to choose a new, single partition scheme from the popup.
But if you cannot even get that far, or the process fails, then your drive is dying, even if AHT can't detect it.

  • HD not booting on Mac, or showing in Disk Utility

So, I already know some of the warning signs of a failing HD, and I've read some posts similar to mine here on the forums. I have a different situation tho. Let me lay out for you….
Mac's main HD won't boot - I get the question-mark folder on start up
Booting from another external and opening disk utility does NOT show the main HD
Plugging the main HD into an external inclosure and booting from a different Mac DOES show the HD
So, this led me to believe maybe the SATA connection is messed up
But, placing a different HD inside the Mac and booting, acted completely normal
So I have no idea what the problem is. The HD reads fine when plugged into an external inclosure, boots and runs fine, and all files and programs are working like normal. But it won't run inside the Mac. Even though another HD of mine will boot and run when placed inside the Mac.
    Please help! Thanks

    Thanks for your help!
Any idea how much replacing the hard drive would cost? It also needs a new battery so I may just have to get a new MacBook if the hard drive is a lot!

  • How to restore and erase a "mac osx extended" with disk utility?

hello, I exedently sepret my disks the first one name is: Macintosh HD
and the secound one name is backup (I chose the name).
I want to merge them together how should I do it?
    (macbook air 11" osx mavericks)
I teyed first restore the scound one and it didn't worked here is a screen shut of it:

Let me make sure i undestand:
    1. you partitioned your internal hard drive into two partitions
    2. you now want to combine them together
    Correct?
If so, i believe you need to get an external hard drivea dn copy everythiong there - including a COOTABLE clone of your startup drive.
Then boot from external, and use disk utility to partiton your drive as (1) partition, and format it (HFS+ Journaled).  Then clone back your main info and anything that was on "backup".

  • Warning signs when using disk utility for my power mac g5

I have a dual 2GHz PowerPC G5. I just upgraded to the latest Leopard & installed FCP2. I noticed when I use Repair Disk Permissions, there are so many warning signs & I'm not sure what to make of it. I do notice that my computer freezes a lot, can someone help interpret these warning signs for me? And, how do I fix it? Here are some samples of those warning signs during repair disk permissions:
Warning: SUID file "sbin/mount-nfs' has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "sbin/unmount" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "sbin/ping' has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "sbin/ping6" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "sbin/route" has been modified and will not be repaired
The list goes on and on, please help.
    many thanks in advance.

The catalog is the index for all the files on disk. It is useless without the related disk files so cloning just the catalog isn't really an option. You would need to clone the entire drive (SuperDuper!, Carbon Copy Cloner and even Disk Utility will do this).
Disk Warrior is a utility to clean up the catalog, make it into an order that should speed up file operations. It has potential to loose files because of the nature of it's job, but it is pretty reliable in my opinion. The catalog is like a telephone directory for files
The repairing of permissions involves the system keeping receipts of all the things that are installed & updated (with the appropriate permission values) and then the repair permissions utility resets the files to what the receipts say. The recieots are kept in the /Library/Receipts folder. You haven't deleted anything from there have you? if you have you would need to replace them with copies from a similar system, not an easy task.
I believe the items contained in /sbin/ are system binaries that come from the BSD package when installing Mac OSX. I would consider doing software updates then try repairing the permissions again.

  • Disk Utility Cannot Be Opened Because Of A Problem

When trying to launch Disk Utility I get the following error message. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I'm running 10.6.4. Thanks in advance for any help.
Disk Utility cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Disk Utility works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.

Reinstall Disk Utility from your Snow Leopard DVD. If your DVD does not install 10.6.4 then use the Combo Updater to update back to 10.6.4.
How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    • Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • External HDD & Disk Utility/Terminal

I wanted to be able to read/write to my Woxter external HDD which is an NFTS partition. so I tried using MacFuse. I followed these steps:
    # Install the packages, MacFUSE Core first, then install NTFS3g.
    # Plug in your external HD (if you have one)
    # Open Disk Utility
    # Click the partition you want to mount with read/write capabilities and unmount it if it is mounted by clicking the button up top.
    # Click info up top and look for Disk Identifier. Mine was "disk1s1"
    # Open the Terminal
    # Enter the following (copy and paste) “sudo ln -s /System/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/mount_fusefs /usr/bin/mount_fusefs”
The ln utility creates a new directory entry (linked file) which has the same modes as the original file. (man)
    # Enter “mkdir /Volumes/ExternalWoxter” This creates the directory where you can find your files.
    # Enter “sudo /usr/local/bin/ntfs-3g /dev/disk1s1 /Volumes/”ExternalWoxter” -o ping_diskarb,volnameforce=”ExternalWoxter””
I´m trying to back up files from my Mac to my Woxter, disk utility tells me that I have read/write access, but I get a message saying I have insufficient privileges to be able to complete the operation - so I can´t back up the files.
Also - my woxter external HD no longer auto-mounts when I start up the mac.
And its icon has changed from the old one to a new icon, the same as the one for Network (you can see an example of this icon in the preferences menu).
Also - when I click on Macintosh HD - I have one icon for the woxter drive for EVERY TIME I have mounted the drive... it doesn´t disappear when I "eject" the drive.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this? please?
    Mac-Ignoramus.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    sudo rm -i /V*/*/.DS_Store
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You may be prompted to remove one or more files named exactly ".DS_Store" (without the quotes.) Press the Y key and then return to confirm. Press the N key and then return if you get any other response, or just close the Terminal window.
Try again to open the volume window.

  • Resized partition using Disk Utility and now Windows 7 will not boot

    Hi,
    Hopefully someone can help me!!
I had previously used Boot Camp to install Windows 7. However, I later realised I had not given myself anywhere near enough disk space as I started using Windows for things I hadn't originally planned on using it for.
Anyway, long story short, to solve the problem I uninstalled some applications on my Mac OSX and used Disk Utility to decrease the size of my Mac partition. My plan was then to reboot to Windows and use a Windows application to increase the size of the Windows partition. However - I coudln't even get that far.
Upon decreasing the size of my Mac partition (succesfully) I restarted my Mac in order to boot to Windows. However, I was greeted with a message along the lines of "unable to boot to Windows please insert boot disk and press any key" (I can't remember the exact message).
I was wondering if anyone knows of any way to restore my Windows partition, retaining all of my previously saved files on my Windows disk. It's probably a long shot, but the thought of losing everything I have been working on for the last few months is a sickening one.
What does give me a bit of hope is that, if I click Boot Camp it seems to recognise that Windows 7 is installed as the option that appears is to uninstall it.
Furthermore, if I view partitions in Disk Utility, a "DISK0S4" is listed. However, it's only at 20gb - if this WAS my BootCamp partition previously, it was originally at something around 60gb (I think - either way, definitely bigger than 20gb!).
On top of this, my current Macintosh HD parition is at 260gb and with the DISK0S4 partition at 20.21gb, there seems to be some space missing... I'm hoping this is the files I've been working on over the last few months!
Anyway, I've done some searching on the net and it *seems* that GPT fdisk *might* be my savour. I've downloaded it but have no idea how to use it and don't plan on playing about with it as I could no doubt do some real damage. If it is likely to solve my problem however, I'm certainly more than capable of being walked through what I need to do.
    Please help!

    Hi Christopher,
I also have problems with Windows rebooting after partition resize trying to reduce Mac side and increase Windows side. I do not see the BootCamp partition labelled as such while running disk utility. The Windows partition shows up when I boot up while pressing the ALT key. However, when I try to run Windows, it says " error loading operatig system".
I also followed instruction and went through to run gdisk successfully. Results towards the end.
What can be done? Windows still does not boot and It shows ? Suspicious MBR at sector 0.

  • Can I partition a drive in Disk Utility without erasing files?

    Hello,
According to the third screenshot, I have the option of partitioning an external drive without losing files already on it, but when I try to do so, I only get a message indicating that it will erase the disk:  http://osxdaily.com/2009/11/20/resize-partitions-in-mac-os-x-with-disk-utility/
I backuped my internal drive with Time Machine and I would now like to partition it so that only one half is for Time Machine purposes.  If it's possible to do that without starting from scratch, if I decide later to eliminate that partition, would that require losing any files?
    Thanks.

You may find your answer here. Have a look around.

  • Disk Utility Stuck

    Help!
I'm partitioning (formatting) a hard drive that was for Windows in Mac OS extended using Disk Utility. The "creating partition map" doesn't seem to have moved for more than 1 hour. Is this normal? I tried to quit, but it said that I might ruin my disk if I do that. Is that true? Any help most appreciated.
    Alexander

"Ruin the disk" probably isn't what the warning said exactly. It won't harm the physical disk but the dat on the disk is a complete loss, of course, and there will be no partition map because the operation is not complete. What options did you choose when selecting to format the drive? As Jerry says, try a simple ERASE first. But the drive may have issues that DU simply will not pass.

  • Unable to initialize Thumb drive using Disk Utility!

    Hi All,
I have a 4GB Sandisk thumb drive that works flawlessly till I tried to initialize it using Disk Utility in my MBP.
Now, whenever I try to connect the drive to USB port, system ask me to initialize the disk but when I try to initialize system goes into an unfinite loop of unmounting the disk.
And now when I try to format it using Windows, the message appears that "Unable to complete the format". The disk was working in both Windows and Mac prior to I used initialize function.
    Any help would begreatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Samberl,
As I already wrote in my initial post that the drive was working before I try to intialize using MBP. Anyways, I already followed your advice and replaced the drive with a new one. But now I am worried if I again use it in my Mac and initialize using disk utility. As of now I have formatted it using Windows and using NTFS-3G in my MAC to read or write the data.
    Anyways, thanks for helping

  • Help help!!  Disk Utility reported can't repair my HD

Hello all I used Disk Utility (version 10.5.5) that comes with Mac OS X 10.4.6 to check my hard drive. The diagnostic returned a message that my drive needed to be repair. So I booted up with installation disc and did the repair.
One of the log says there is an error in red font "Invalid leaf record count"
and the repair results were as the following:
    1HFS Volume repaired
1 Volume Could not be repaired.
What does "Invalid leaf record count" mean?? And why 1 volume in my drive can't be repaired? How do I repair it?
I only have 1 volume on my HD, I didn't partition my drive. So, what is causing the problem? Should I be ignored? What's the benefit of partitioning my drive?

Sometimes the file directory is corrupted or damage beyond Mac OS X's Disk Utility can repair, but don't panic just yet. Get a copy of Disk Warrior, boot from it and run it, it will build a brand new file directory and replace the old one, that should solve your problems, a lot of us here "swears" by Disk Warrior, in fact I had your similar problem, ran DW and problem solved.
As for disk partition, it is not really necessary in modern OS like the Mac OS X, one of the reason people partition disks (a long time ago) because in the older days of the older Mac OS, it is unable to read a large hard drive beyond a certain size, i.e. if you place a 250Gb (of course then there is no 250 yet) inside your Mac, your Mac probably can only read it is 120Gb large, so that's why you need to partition the drive into 2 or 3 to read.
People also partition drives to run and boot multiple OS, this is especially true maybe for tech guys etc, who may have OS X, various versions, and OS 9 running in different partitions.
    Cheers

  • Volumes Won't Drag Over in Disk Utility

I'm in Disk Utility. I am trying to mirror the 250gb drive that came with the computer with a 250gb partition I've made of another drive. I am following the directions in the disk utility help page to the T, and there is a weird problem. I can't drag the disks into the list.
    first disk info:
    http://thepunctuator.net/LBWS/raid1.png
    Mount Point : / Capacity : 232.6 GB (249,715,376,128 Bytes)
Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Available : 208.6 GB (223,937,794,048 Bytes)
Owners Enabled : Yes Used : 24.0 GB (25,777,582,080 Bytes)
Number of Folders : 112,925 Number of Files : 499,501
    second disk info:
    http://thepunctuator.net/LBWS/raid2.png
    Mount Point : /Volumes/Macintosh HD2 Capacity : 232.9 GB (250,053,931,008 Bytes)
Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Available : 232.8 GB (249,976,754,176 Bytes)
Owners Enabled : Yes Used : 73.6 MB (77,176,832 Bytes)
Number of Folders : 4 Number of Files : 9
When I first loaded up Disk Utility, I couldn't even drag the disks at all. I would click&hold and start moving, and the disks didn't pop into icons and start dragging. I quit the program and loaded it back up, and now they pop into icons, but when I hover them over the list box, nothing happens. It doesn't add them to the list. No amount of quitting and restarting the application fixes it. Restarting the computer did not resolve the issue either.
Here is kind of what it looks like when I drag the disks over, if you pretend the cursor is there as well:
    http://thepunctuator.net/LBWS/raid3.png
When I release, the disks are not added to the list.
If no one knows how to resolve this issue, does anyone know a way to do this operation from the terminal?

    Re: "
In Disk Utility, go to Help menu and read how to use the program to create RAIDs."
I've read that manual (as I mentioned in my original post, thanks for reading). Here is what it says:
"If you booted your computer from a disk that has multiple partitions, you cannot create a RAID set that contains partitions from your boot disk. To create a RAID disk that contains partitions from that disk, you must boot your computer from another disk first."
That's fine, but I can't believe I have to format the partition in order to RAID it. Why can't I just mirror it and have it rebuild the information onto the second partition? That seems like a simple and obvious bit of functionality. What is it about HFS that prevents this from happening? To be honest, I just don't believe you.
Re: "Apple Disk Utility RAIDs will only use the smaller capacity for building parts. You would be better to format each drive, with a 2nd partition on the larger. However, using drives of unlike capacity and speed (seek times do vary and just like with SCSI it is best if they are identical DNA down to firmware)."
Thank you, but if you spent five seconds looking at my original post you would have seen that the partitions I'm using are the same size. (Ok, they're not exactly the same size, but less than .1% difference). As far as having identical DNA, shrug. I have a server with 3.5 tb RAID5 array sitting by my knee that has, not only disks from different manufacturers, but also a mishmash of SATA and IDE devices. It hasn't had a problem in three months. The performance is great.
Anyway, I am trying to get help with a specific issue which I recounted in my original post. I am not here to discuss the finer points of disk management with you guys - I am trying to deal with this specifically Mac issue of the Disk Utility application. I know how to handle myself in *nix, and if it fails, that's fine, I have a backup.
Thanks for your administration advice, but then again, no thanks. Does anyone have any help for the above issue?

  • Disk Utility and Disk Warrior error on internal hard drive....PLEASE HELP!!

After running idefrag on my internal Western Digital 120gig hard drive. The drive did not appear after I rebooted my mac. I opened Disk Utility and the drive is there but grayed out. I used "repair disk" under First Aid and it gave me this error:
Verify and Repair disk “HD 120”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Then I tried using Disk Warrior 3.0 to rebuild and it gave me this error:
error ""WD 120 GB" cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged. The disk was not modified (2155, 2179)".
I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this, but I need help as most of my important data is on this hard drive. What else can I do?
    I am on a g4 quicksilver with 10.4.3 installed.

Sorry to hear about your problem but unless you are working with very large files such as with video editing, etc., using a defrag utility is not required with OS X and no defrag utility should be used on a hard drive without a backup first.
The current Disk Warrior version for Tiger is 3.0.3 and if Disk Warrior cannot repair the drive/directory, it must be in bad shape which was caused by using idefrag.
You can try using a data recovery utility such as Data Rescue (Prosoft Engineering) which includes a free trial version.
