Supermicro, adaptec, raid 5, red carpet

HI:
downloaded the NLSBS 9.0 and tried to install, couldn't find disk. went to
the novell support knowledge base and found that i had to do a manual
install and load the iso drivers manually, then after loading software to
add entries to the kernal config and make a new ram disk image.
this worked fine, but if i do the red carpet thing, then i can't boot.
any suggestions?
roy

  • K9N Platinum & Adaptec RAID 3405 - is it possible?

    Hello,
I'm still using my old MSI K9N Platinum MB and was thinking about adding a RAID adapter. I don't want to use the onboard RAID, since this needs too much CPU. I thought about installing an Adaptec RAID 3405 card. The card needs a PCI Express x4 slot. Since the K9N Platinum only has a "PCI Express Lite"-Slot aviable, I was wondering, if I can successfully run the card in this slot.
    Thanks for your help.

I can't find the exact source where I read that some tima ago. It has something to do with the computation of the striping done by the CPU (and not the adapter itself). I have read something, that a RAID adapter w/o an on card CPU is about 20-25% slower than one with a dedicated CPU. The onboard RAID has about the same performance as a "cheap" RAID controller card (w/o CPU). I know that doesn't mean that an onboard RAID costs about 20-25% CPU load, but I think it will have an significant impact.
I'm sorry that I can't provide any more detail, but I had no luck in finding my source again.

  • Red Carpet Activation Fails Too

I just installed Novell Linux Desktop that came with the LSBS9 and
installed SP1 from the CD's. When I try to activate the Red Carpet
service it fails when I enter the e-mail address that is registered with
customer care and the activation code that is shown in the download area
    of customer care.
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Well, I think figured it out somewhat. I recieved the LSBS9 as part of
my upgrade protection and the serial number, but I never recieved a link
to regester the serial number. So as best I can tell I will have to
contact Novell and get them to send me the link to register my product
so I can activate the Red Carpet services.
I am a little irritated by this because I think the registration link
should be apart of the customer care portal.

  • Adaptec RAID management tool

Three months ago I bought P1-102A2M barebone server, which have Adaptec SATA RAID feature. I have installed Windows 2003 SBS SP1 with Adaptec RAID Manager Browser Edition from MSI server installation CD. All is fully functional.
Because of good experience with that server I bought another one this week. It is completely same server as the first one with same OS. But installation CD (which looks absolutely same) does NOT have Adaptec RAID manager. Why? RAID is useless without it. It even doesn’t rebuild after disk failure!
I tried to install Adaptec RAID manager from old installation CD. Instalation completed successfully but the service didn’t start after reboot. (Service terminated unexpectly).
Do somebody knows how to rebuild degraded Adaptec SATA RAID without restarting and waiting 2.5 hours. I cannot afford so long time on server.
                            Viktor Placek

Oh, this one. Yes they are exactly the same. Quit strange is, that I bought both servers as MS-9249. But on the motherboard is MS-9149 (version 1.0)

  • K9A2 Platinum + 2xATI 3870 CF + x8 PCI-E Adaptec Raid 5405?

I have a K9A2 Platinum mainboard and 2x Ati HD3870 videocards (Crossfire-X). Would a x8 PCI-E Adaptec Raid 5405 card work in one of the remaining x16 PCI-E slots? Or are those x16 PCI-E slots reserved for videocards only?
The mainboard manual says: "When 4 PCI Express x16 slots are all installed, the PCIE x 16 lanes will auto arrange form x16/ x0/ x16/ x0 to x8/ x8/ x8/ x8". Does this mean if i install 2 videocards, the other 2 x16 PCI-E slots will be disabled?

And the card you mention will not have a higher speed because it is in a fast lane.

  • K8N + Adaptec RAID problem

Installing an Adaptec RAID 2810SA controller with the
    K8N Neo Platinum doesn't work.
The bios version of the MOBO is the latest (W7030NMS V1.5)
    The onboard RAID is disabled.
I even tried with SATA, IDE disabled, but the result is always the same :
When booting the systems hangs after the initialisation messages of the RAID card.
    And then there was silence...
Anyone any idea how to make this work

    Yes, I tried other slots.
Only the AGP adapter is in the other slots.

  • ThinkStation S30, Adaptec RAID 6405E and Recovery Media

I have a working TS S30 with W7 and I've created my Recovery Media set of (4) DVDs. I then bought an Adaptec RAID 6405E and 2 SAS HDDs and created a RAID0 (I know... it isn't fault tolerant). Booted the S30 using the 1st Recovery Disk in order to install W7 but the setup doesn't recognize the RAID0. Perhaps because there's no driver for the Adaptec RAID 6405E on the Recovery Media.
The question is: how do I add the Adaptec RAID 6405E driver to the Recovery Media in order to run the W7 reinstall on the RAID0?
    Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Recovery media is designed to work with the system configurations as they ship from the factory.  Adding a third party RAID card not sold or supported by Lenovo is outside the intended design of the recovery media provided by Lenovo.  HDD controllers are particularly troubling in that drivers for the controller are needed to do any sort of image recovery.  Think about the number of available HDD controllers on the market and the sheer number of different drivers we would have to support to attempt the type of design you're implying.  We couldn't possibly cover them all, much less make sure they're up to date and the process works smoothly.
Conversely, we're limited by Microsoft with exactly what we can provide as recovery media and what their functionality is.  This is mainly due to piracy concerns.  We can't hand out recovery media that function essentially as OS install CDs that will work on any platform as there's not much we could do to stop users from using that recovery media in unauthorized ways.
Adaptec isn't officially supported because it's not a device that we qualified during system development.  Devices that are qualified (i.e. you can order your system directly from Lenovo with the device installed) are fully supported by Lenovo.
As I see it, you have two options to make the Adaptec card function correctly in your system:
    1.  Install the card, set up any arrays you require, and reinstall the OS from scratch manually using the Adaptec drivers.
    2.  Figure out some way to possibly migrate your current (I'm assuming Intel controller based) image over to your new Adaptec controller.
I'm not super familiar with what sort of image migration methods that might be popular today, so you'll probably have to do a bit of searching to figure that out.  The last time I migrated an image, I think I used Acronis software, but I also wasn't migrating to a platform with a different HDD controller.

  • Adaptec RAID 2405 in X4150?

    Hi,
we are currently looking for a SAS RAID controller for a Sun Fire X4150. Are there any known issues which would prevent us to use a Adaptec RAID 2405 in the X4150? Would it in principle be possible to install a RAID controller and keep some SATA disks attached to the motherboard?
    Thanks,

  • Adaptec Raid 7805 and Install

    Hey,
I am going to attempt for the second time to install arch on a adaptec 7805 raid array with UEFI boot. I tried it the first time and after install I couldn't even get into the bootloader. I am not sure why or what I did but think it may be because of this card? I am able to see the array on the livecd without doing anything. Is there any hooks like raid or lvm that I need to apply for this card?
    thanks

I don't have any experience with Adaptec RAID controllers, but based on the Adaptec product page I don't see why it wouldn't work. The hooks are irrelevent; you're not even getting to the point they would be involved.
I would first look to the UEFI aspect. Have you 'mastered' it to the point you can be relatively certain it's not the problem?

  • VIA Raid 0: Red screen of Death - fatal error during boot sequence

I have been using two Maxtor 120GB SATA drives in a RAID 0 array on my Athlon 64 MSI MB.  I have occasionally had messages saying "Hard disk error. Can't find drive 0".  I've assumed that this has been a driver issue because if I power down, wait a while I can reboot and continue without issue (other than chkdsk running during boot up).  However after the last such error, when I next tried to reboot I got an error message as the RAID was initialising.  The error message was in a red box on a black screen and stated that there was a fatal error and that the raid relationship and all HHD would be destroyed if I continued.  Naturally I switched off at this point, but on rebooting got exactly the same message.  Eventually, as I have backups, I continued past this point and sure enough the RAID had gone.  So I rebuilt the raid array and everything seems to be OK.
However, I'd forgotten that my MSI DVD burner was incapacitated due to a failed firmware update so had temporaril;y replace it with a DVD rom drive to get access to my backups.  BUT the drive won't read all my backup discs, in particular it won't read the Drive C backups .
Has anyone else had this RAID erro.  Is it a driver error or is it a dsik failing (even though they were new at Christmas).
I am using a Superflower power supply which has 22A on the 12V rail
    1GB PC3200 ram by A-Data (CAS 2.5)
    Elderly HP 9100 CDRW
    MSI DR-8 DVD RW
    Ethernet card
    Radeon 9600 128MB
    AMD64 3000 processor
    Freeflow

Raids do not really help benchmarks unless you considure hard drive benchmarks. Most games and benchmark proggies load everything they need prior to running. So unless you have a low memory condition that forces the game or benchmark to use the swap file the only place that you would typically see any gain in speed is during the loading of the game or benchmark. That is hard to quantify other than through experience.
Where a raid shines is in file tranfer situations. When you create and save large files such as movies, Reading or copying large files, defragging, or any other massive file effort. Overall the gains can be very small compaired to the rest of what you do with your system. However that is not to belittle what a Raid does. It does give a finer sheen to the overall computers operations and will make sluggish file transfers seem much more bearable overall.

  • 845 Ultra + Adaptec Raid 2400a

[ May be a bit off topic sorry ]
    Hi,
    Motherboard : MSI 845 Ultra Ver 1
    Bios Version : 1.50
Graphic controler : Generic PCI VGA
    Ram : 2x 256 DDR
    Raid controler : Adaptec 2400a
( at the end there should be 2 of those raid controlers with 6 HD connected to it : 2 x 40 Gb IBM ICL series and 4 x 120 Gb Maxtor D540 series )
I'm having problems entering my raid card bios using this motherboard.
I type my " ctrl + A " to enter the bios, and the only thing I get is 2 lines with a random text in different color on the top of my screen. I'm able to Ctrl+alt+del to reboot, and able to boot without trying to enter the raid card bios.
I changed my raid card, and my disks connected to it. I changed the PCI slot.
Anyone have a Clue for that ? Anyone was able to use that kind of controler on that MB ?
    Regards ...

The 845 Ultra has bios versions from 3.0 to 3.4 so you either wrote the wrong version or the wrong board.

  • Red Carpet consuming memory!

    Yohoo!
I've installed the evaluation of the nlsbs9. The installation runs fine,
    now I'm updating the sles9.
Let's take a look at _top_:
    Mem: 1036868k total, 1021216k used, 15652k free, 128732k buffers
    Swap: 11735448k total, 382880k used, 11352568k free, 354788k cached
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
    10169 root 15 0 803m 430m 10m S 0.3 42.6 46:01.62 rcd
    4267 root 18 0 176m 8120 28m S 0.0 0.8 0:01.15 ndsd
    This is not true?!
The RedCarpet daemon uses 803 Megs of memory?
The eDirectory daemon uses 176 Megs of memory?
This can't be really wanted- even not from my view as administrator and
not from any programmer. 1 Gig only for two daemons? Are they kidding?
    Any comments?
BTW: RedCarpet seems to be a mess in comparisation to the Yast-Update
from the SLES 8 and 9.

  • Connecting xserve to xserve raid - done everything

    Hello,
I'm having trouble connecting my secondhand xserve to xserve raid.
    - xserve is running 10.8.5
    - i'm screen sharing the xserve
    - I have reset both the RAID controllers with paperclip
    - both fiber channels are connected
    - both controller cards are connected to the xserve via ethernet
    - half the hdds in both sides of raid show red light
    - it has been on for 24 hours now
Add system in RAID Admin doesn't propose anything, so I have manually entered the ip addresses from server.app>network pane.
If anybody has any ideas I would be thankful.
    Paul

    There are several possibilities.
First off, from your screen shot, both your RAID and your host are using the same IP addresses (169.254.192.90 and 169.254.87.107). That's not going to work. However, it's probably not your major problem... let's move down the stack.
Your interface on the host isn't connected/configured corrected - as noted by the Orange ball alongside the IP address. You need to fix that.
Second, the 169.254 addresses are somewhat variable, so just because the RAID had that address at one point in time that doesn't mean it still has that address - it could have changed. This may or may not be the case, depending on the link status of the host system.
If you choose to Add System within RAID Admin, it will search over the network to find nearby, available RAID systems to add. This is usually better than relying on dynamic IP addresses that might have changed since you last configured the array.
In either caase, focus on the link to your host. Check if you can at least ping the RAID. Use a tool such as tcpdump to see if you can determine the IP address of the RAID (hint: you should see it broadcasting on the network link).

  • Set up RAID 0 on new Mac Pro

I should have the machine by Friday, Nov 2. Two 500g drives. Apparently, Apple won't be configuring the RAID 0 (mirroring) for me. Are there instructions online that I can read now so I know what I'm getting into before hand?
Also, in the event of a drive failure, should the system just keep on chugging along, just giving me a message that one drive has failed? On my Windows system, that's what is supposed to happen. But having had two failures over the years, I only got the friendly helpful message once. The other time, the entire system shut down, even though only one drive failed. What should I expect with the Mac Pro?
    Thanks!

Thanks to both. And thanks for pointing out my error. It's mirroring that's important to me, not the added speed from striping. I'm hoping that a drive failure won't cause the machine to stop "dead in its tracks", as I've had happen before, even on a high end Windows machine with RAID 1 enabled via an Adaptec RAID card.
What still isn't clear to me is whether with Apple's RAID 1 the system will continue functioning if one drive fails, or if instead I'll have some work to do to get back up and running.
The reason for my question is that too many times in the past I've bought into something that turns out not to be quite what I expected. And since Apple sells a separate RAID card for the Mac Pro, I'm wondering if the built in RAID function, without the add-on $1,000 card, will allow the system to keep working when one drive fails in a mirrored setup.
    Thanks!

    I have a problem with a T5120 server.
    I never did it.

look like you have a internal Adaptec RAID controller (c1) . This controller have two mirror volumen (two disk each)
The other controlers (c2, c3 and c4) are LSI probably to connect Sun StorEdge 3310.
