Superscript in TOC

Hello!
is there a way to make part of the text as superscript in the table of content with iwork 08 pages?
for example
TOEFL® -> with the ® superscripted.
Thanks!
Jeanny

Jeanny,
I don't think so because Pages treats TOC text as a solid block, forcing you to select all of the text when you click on any of it.

  • How to keep superscript in header text xref? It is OK in TOC.

I am updating this generated book:http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/533/datasheets/1704/CFA533-YYH-KC_v1.0.pdf using FM 9, unstructured.
As you can see on the title page, the product name has a superscript "2" in it. Unlike this post http://forums.adobe.com/message/1240012#1240012, I have no problem with keeping the superscript in the TOC.But I have a problem keeping the superscript "2" in the header text
I set up the header text as a separate file.
The "2" correctly appears as superscript in this header text file.
In this header text file, the phrase of text with the superscript "2" is set up as a cross-reference with the cross-reference format definition as "<$paratext>".
On the Master page for each file in the book where I want the header text to appear (for example, in the TOC, Body, Appendix files.), I have a marker for the cross-reference. I can change characters before or after the superscript "2" in the header text file, Update the book, and the header text cross-referenced  in the TOC, Body, Appendix files show the update.
I have the superscript character tag in in the catalog of all the files.I am not using "As Is".
Is this enough information to figure out what the problem is?
If there is a dumb way to set up header text, please let me know. I've been using it this way successfuly for years but can change it, if needed.
    Thank you,
    Sylvia in Spokane,.WA

    Sylvia,
If you need a superscript 2, why do you not just enter exactly that character and don’t both with extra character formats? With Western Windows you would enter the character using Alt+0178.
    ¹ = Alt+0185
    ² = Alt+0178
    ³ = Alt+0179
Other fonts may have all digits available as super- and subscript characters, check with the Character Map utility.

  • Maintain superscript format in TOC?

    Hi there--
I'm generating a book in which some chapter titles and headings contain superscript TM or registered TMs (e.g. "How to use Kleenex(TM)," where the (TM) is superscript). When I generate the TOC, the superscript is lost, and the TM just appears in-line with the rest of the words in the heading.
I have successfully generated TOCs before and not had this issue, but I'll be darned if I can figure out what I've done differently this time!
Does anybody know how to carry the superscript into the TOC? (And, I guess, the index as well?)
    Thanks much,
    Anne

    > The trade mark character (T, which you can get in Windows by holding
    > down ALT and typing 0153 from the numeric keypad) is already raised and
    > smaller than surrounding text. It does not need to be superscripted.
In theory, yes. In practice, this is font-dependent.
Some fonts have the TM character superscripted correctly,
others have a marginal (if any) superscript built-in.
Compare Sabon and Ocean Sans, for instance.
Anne, start by checking and settling on the fonts used.
    This may solve your problem.
If not, make sure all your files contain a Character Format
for superscript, e.g. "SuperDuper". Apply that character format
to all your TM characters in the headings. If you have that
character format defined also in your TOC file, the superscript
will carry over to the TOC correctly.

  • Superscript or subscript in TOC

Can anybody tell me how to get subscripts and superscripts in a table of contents? To me it seem as if Pages cannot display style overrides correctly in the TOC. I have to urgently finish a publication, so it would be of great help for me if anybody knew the answer.
    Thank you in advance!

Although this solution is not really satisfying it is a good workaround for this purpose given that I'm a little bit in a hurry with my work. Nonetheless I feel there should be a more elegant way in Pages to correctly display character styles in a TOC.
Thank you for your quick help!

  • TOC issue - (Superscript)

    Hi there.
I am having an issue with my Table of Contents.  All my links works except for the items that have a superscript in them.  In the example below, when I create the PDF and hover over the items the three words of (Modes of Operation) are hot links that take me to page 26.  When I hover over the second entry I2C Digital Interface the only item that is a hot link is the letter I.  Our goal is to have the entire entry a hot link for customers to hit and go directly to the page.  I think the superscript is breaking the link.
    Example below:
    Modes of Operation .........26
    I2C Digital Interface ............28
    HELP!!!

    > I think the superscript is breaking the link.
And you would be correct. It's terminating a character range, and the hypetext generated for it.
See:TOC link with a subscript character does not work in PDF
To save you a click, the solution is to use a Unicode natively superscripted 2 (U+00B2, \u00b2 if you prefer to do it as a Variable), and not as a normal 2 with a <Superscript> Character Format applied.

  • TOC link with a subscript character does not work in PDF

    Hi,
has anyone come across with this? A heading has a subscript character and when you generate a PDF, the TOC page has no link. Other TOC heading links work out just fine, but all these that have subscript, these do not.
I have used Save As PDF and selected even create named destinations for all Paragraphs. Usually the TOC works fine even if that is not selected. A link with subscript does not work in either case.
I appreciate any help with this, thanks

    > The link is always terminated before any change in the character format. That's not a bug.
In user-authored manually-created hypertext links, sure. And in that case, we know that we have to re-apply the Marker to the various fragments of the desired text. I would not expect this behavior for a generated file where we have limited control over the auto-tagging.
    > Therefore if you have subscript or superscript applied, the link starts at the beginning of the paragraph and ends before the character format change (sub-/superscript).
It's not just format changes in body <$paratext> that break this. If you so much as apply a different format to the elements on the TOC Reference Page TOC (such as making the page number a different font), that breaks the HT of the page number in the PDF.
    > As far as I know Rick Quatro offers a FrameScript script for this problem.
Well, Adobe might consider this to be an Enhancement Request item, but I consider it to be a defect.
Is there anyone who would object if the TOC entries had functional full-string HT links by default? If so, Adobe could fix the problem, and have an Update tickbox to revert to legacy broken behavior.
In any case, the Unicode solution is not really a "work-around", even though I put it that way. For anything where Unicode has a glyph that you would otherwise implement as FrameRoman with a Character Format, use Unicode.

  • How to keep superscript format when generating a table of contents

    Hi,
I have a superscript ® in a title in a document that needs to be brought in the Table of contents. When I do generate the TOC, I cannot keep the superscript format in the TOC.
I could cheat and replace it manually, but there has to be a way it stays with those properties every time I regenerate the TOC.
    Any idea how?
    Regards.

  • Updating page numbers only in TOC

    Hi,
I am using IDCS3. I was wondering if there was a way to update just the page #'s in the TOC.
I looked, but all I can find is "Update Table of Contents" in the Layout menu, which updates the text and page numbers.
    Thanks,
    Cathy

I have a lot of lengthy user manuals that sometimes have symbols/graphics in the headings, which come in too big for the TOC (visually just doesn't look good) and then I have to manually reduce them just a bit.
Also sometimes the length of the text in the heading goes beyond one line (Yes, I know that sounds strange, but our manuals are only 5.5 x 8.5 or smaller, not 8 1/2 x 11 which would give us more room) requiring a manual Return in the TOC. So, I have to then change the paragraph spacing from .05 to 0 so there's not an extra space between just those two lines.
Another thing is superscript registration marks. If you have a heading ending in a registration mark it makes the page # superscript too, so then I have to highlight the leaders and page # to unsuperscript it.
So, long story short, it would be nice to just have the page #'s updated (like Microsoft Word, which gives you the option of doing the whole table or just the #'s).
    Thanks for the replys.

  • Possible to Have ToC Default to Show Only Top Level (collapse sublevels)?

    Howdy!
I'll bet I'm not the only one wishing for this.  Let's say you're using Captivate 4's Table of Contents feature with a longish movie of Cp slides, which is chunked into bite-size sections content-wise.  In the ToC, though, you can't mimic that same organization scheme; at least, the learner would first need to collapse all the ToC folders you've created so they see only the top-level listing.
This can be a critical issue:  keeping the at-first-glance list in the ToC brief enough to be inviting to learners, yet allowing learners to drive which details are currently visible.
A movie's topical hierarchy could be along these lines, for example ...
    Section 1 - National Brands
    What are National Brands?
Why Are They Important to Our Business?
    Working with Nat. Brands
    Practice Your Knowledge
    Section 2 - International Brands
    What are International Brands?
Why Are They Important to Our Business?
    Working with Intl. Brands
    Practice Your Knowledge
You'd like to organize the ToC to show only the section titles (1st level) and to suppress the 2nd-level detail (slide titles) until the learner chooses to expand the folder to see those details.
I've tried things like grouping the slides into sections in the Storyboard view and organizing the slides into sections strictly within the ToC -- both to no avail.
Has anyone solved for this need yet?
I'm all ears, and you'd be doing learners of the world a huge favor.
    Thanks!

    Hi, Jim.
Thanks for being 'on the case' and looking into this so quickly.  Your
findings are encouraging, although my user base is generally working with
    IE 6 and FP8 or 9.
Since the only thing I may influence is getting  IT to help push out FP10,
    I'm hoping it's more of a player- than a browser-version issue.
I'll test things out by Monday and let you know the results.  Wish me luck!

    Dave,
I just tested this on my local web server and it worked fine.  I created a
blank project with 8 slides.  Created my TOC with grouping... 2 slides in
each group.  I turned on self paced learning.  I tried with and without the
widget and it picked up where I left off in either case.  See
    https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B86WuEq6SVwRNWIwMjhjODctMjE2Yy00MWE2LWI5YzEtMGQxYzNjOWQ0Z mI2&hl=en.
I published using FP10 and IE8 to view.  Notice any difference between
    your project and this one?
    Thanks,

  • TOC load times

I'm using (Captivate 4) aggregator to create a single swf file containing multiple smaller swf files. I have the preloader setting in each file set as 1% and have each file compressed as much as possible. However the problem I am having is the toc creating in the aggregator is taking over 2 minutes to load. So if a user is already familiar with the first few steps and wants to jump to step #5 in the project they can't do that until the whole project loads. Can anyone give me some advice on how to get the toc to appear at the launch of the project and not load one at a time? Or to get it to load more quickly?

It's actually newer than yours. It is using AMD and not Intel, so I don't have
virtual cores, 4 instead of 8. Yours is actually dual cpu's correct, and is
using Core 2 technology running an MCH. From what you have described, I knew
    it would be faster.
There are many factors conspiring to produce the results observed, especially
in the mobo layout. As I noted earlier, I didn't spend a great deal of money
because I did not want to put that large a chunk into the early i7's. (That's
what you get when you work for the elephant in the room!) And I don't have the
fastest AMD system either. I opted out for stability.
But as you can see, newer isn't necessarily better!
I want to be sure I'm clear here. When you open PS after an OS reboot, the
total time to working screen is ~7 sec? Restart after exit of PS is how fast?
Is it possible the video card has anything to do with it?
    Lawrence
BTW, OT but it is my thread, I figured out why DXO and Adobe aren't playing
well together, especially the freeze. It is memory. If I allow 5G of memory
for PS, they are ok with each other. Kick it up to 6G or higher and the freeze
occurs. Interestingly, I can get out of it easily by exiting with Photoshop.
Bridge, DXO and even FF won't do anything, and Task Manager comes up Black
Screened. But PS is running,(sort of) probably because it has all the memory!
No events are generated by this freeze, AFAIK.
    I'm using the MS AV.

  • Detail Region as TOC for captivate (.swf) files

    Hi All,
Not sure how to explain this, but i will do my best. I didnt like the TOC/Aggregator for CP 5. Thinking maybe to use Spry data using the Detail Region sample. I thought it would be simple to just combine the Detail Region code with the publsihed .swf and .htm code. But not sure what im doing wrong or if this is even possible to do. I was experimenting just using the exact same code and xml for Detail Region sample and modifying it a bit. See below...
